Pakistan plans legal action over India's suspension of Indus Waters Treaty

Pakistan is preparing international legal action over India’s suspension of Indus Waters Treaty, a government minister told Reuters, as tensions intensify between the neighbours following an attack on tourists in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Aqeel Malik, the Minister of State for Law and Justice, told Reuters that Islamabad was working on plans for at least three different legal options, including raising the issue at the World Bank - the treaty’s facilitator. It was also considering taking action at the Permanent Court of Arbitration or at the International Court of Justice in the Hague where it could allege that India has violated the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, he said. “Legal strategy consultations are almost complete,” Malik said, adding the decision on which cases to pursue would be made “soon” and would likely include pursuing more than one avenue. India last week suspended the World Bank-mediated Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 after the attack in IIOJK, saying it would last until “Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism”. Islamabad denies any involvement in the attack in which 26 people were killed. India claims two of three assailants it has identified were from Pakistan. Islamabad has said “any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan … will be considered as an act of war”. Pakistan has also suspended all trade with India and closed its airspace to Indian airlines. Malik added that a fourth diplomatic option that Islamabad was considering was to raise the issue at the United Nations Security Council. “All the options are on the table and we are pursuing all appropriate and competent forums to approach,” he said. “The treaty cannot be suspended unilaterally and cannot be held in abeyance, there is not (such a) provision within the treaty,” said Malik. Kushvinder Vohra, a recently retired head of India’s Central Water Commission said: “There are very limited options (for Pakistan) … I can say that there are solid grounds for us to defend our (India’s) action.” Government officials and experts on both sides say India cannot stop water flows immediately, because the treaty has allowed it to only build hydropower plants without significant storage or dams on the three rivers allocated to Pakistan.

Pakistan will retaliate with double force if provoked by India: Naqvi

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday warned that Pakistan would respond with double the force if provoked by India, amid rising regional tensions. Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Naqvi was asked what Pakistan’s reaction would be if India initiated hostile actions. “If India attempts any mischief, the response will be two for one,” he said, issuing a stern message. He also confirmed that the Pakistan women’s cricket team will not travel to India for the ICC Women's World Cup 2025 in September. Referring to the recent attack on the Jaffar Express train, the interior minister said there was evidence of Indian involvement, adding that State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry would soon brief the media with further details. Naqvi also commented on the Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir(IIOJK), stating that the incident reflects broader intentions and agendas on India’s part.

Wagah border reopens for two days

Despite ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India, the Wagah-Attari border has been temporarily reopened for two days to facilitate citizens holding Long-Term Visas (LTV) and No Objection Return to India (NORI) visas. Security sources confirmed that the move aims to assist individuals residing across both countries who were facing difficulties returning due to the recent border closure. On Monday, 129 Pakistani passport holders possessing NORI visas crossed into India via the Wagah Border. However, no Indian citizens holding Pakistani long-term visas arrived in Pakistan, according to sources. The arrival of Indian nationals with Pakistani long-term visas is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Diplomatic officials explained that Pakistan grants long-term visas to Indian citizens, particularly women, who have married Pakistani nationals and settled permanently in Pakistan but have not yet acquired Pakistani citizenship. These individuals, when travelling to India to meet family or attend events, do not require a new visa to return to Pakistan. Conversely, India issues long-term visas alongside a NORI certificate to Pakistani nationals residing in India or married there. The arrangement allows them to visit Pakistan and return to India without needing a fresh visa. Following the recent escalation in tensions, both countries had closed the Wagah-Attari border, creating challenges for long-term and NORI visa holders who were stranded during visits to their home countries. While both governments had cancelled visas issued for business, tourism, and medical purposes, allowing those affected a brief window to return home, the permissions did not initially extend to long-term visa holders. As a result, many Pakistani and Indian nationals were left stranded on either side of the border for the past four days, awaiting clearance to cross.

First Hajj flight from Pakistan to depart for Saudi Arabia today

Pakistan will begin its 33-day Hajj flight operation on Tuesday, with six flights scheduled to depart for Saudi Arabia on the first day, state media reported on Monday. This year, nearly 89,000 Pakistanis are expected to perform Hajj under the government scheme, while an additional 23,620 will travel through private tour operators. The annual pilgrimage is set to take place in June. “The Hajj flight operation to airlift intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia is commencing [Tuesday],” Radio Pakistan said in its report. On the opening day, two flights will depart from Lahore and one each from Islamabad, Karachi, Quetta, and Multan. The final flight under the government scheme will leave on May 31. Pilgrims travelling under the government scheme will be transported through a total of 342 flights. Approximately 50,500 Pakistani pilgrims will benefit from Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Route Initiative, which streamlines immigration procedures by allowing travellers to complete their clearance at home airports before departing. The initiative, launched in 2019, is currently operational in Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, and Bangladesh. Under the Makkah Route Initiative, 28,000 pilgrims will depart from Islamabad, and 22,500 from Karachi. While final global figures are yet to be confirmed, projections suggest that Hajj 2025 could see a record attendance of over 2.5 million Muslims gathering for the pilgrimage.

Lawyer booked for backing Mahrang Baloch online

A case has been registered against lawyer Jalila Haider at the Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in Islamabad for allegedly supporting Mahrang Baloch, chief organiser of the Baloch Yekjehti Committee (BYC), on social media. According to details, the case was filed under Sections 9, 10, and 26-A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 on behalf of the state. Islamabad Cyber Crime Reporting Centre Technical Assistant Aneesur Rehman is the complainant in the case. The complaint states that Mahrang Baloch is listed under the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act by the Balochistan Home Department. During the inquiry, it was found that Jalila Haider allegedly shared content in support of Mahrang Baloch intentionally, an act that, according to the complaint, could spread unrest and anxiety among the public and within society. Subsequently, a formal case was registered, and an investigation has been initiated. On Friday, Mahrang and other leaders of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee began a hunger strike to protest the alleged "torture" of detainees by prison staff and the transfer of activist Beebow Baloch to District Jail Pishin. Mahrang and several BYC activists had been arrested on March 22, accused of attacking Quetta Civil Hospital and inciting violence, following a police crackdown on their protest against alleged enforced disappearances in Quetta. Her detention under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance sparked widespread condemnation from Baloch rights advocates and international human rights organisations.

Army must stand by people, say PTI's Omar

PTI leader Omar Ayub has reiterated the claim that former prime minister Imran Khan is the only person who can lead the nation during the testing times when India has unilaterally suspended the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and the two arch rivals are fast climbing up the escalation ladder. Talking to the media after attending proceedings of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi, Omar, who also serves as the National Assembly leader of opposition, stated on Saturday that by suspending the IWT, the Modi government has proclaimed war against Pakistan

Pakistan proposes UN members, neighbouring states for fair investigation of Pahalgam incident

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that Pakistan is ready to allow an international investigation into the recent Pahalgam incident, suggesting that experts from European and neighbouring countries be included. Speaking on the television program Center Stage, Asif reiterated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer for an impartial probe, emphasizing that Pakistan has no objection to international oversight. "Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made it clear: let the international community investigate the Pahalgam incident and verify the credibility of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claims," Asif said. He praised the Prime Minister's recent address as comprehensive, addressing all pertinent issues. Asif stressed that European nations, neighbouring countries, and even members of the UN Security Council could be invited to oversee the investigation process to ensure transparency. He also highlighted China’s crucial role, noting that Beijing shares borders with both India and Pakistan and has stakes in the Kashmir issue. Asif pointed out that the Kashmir conflict is a colonial legacy left by Britain, suggesting the UK should also be involved in scrutinizing the matter. Criticizing the Indian government, Khawaja Asif remarked that even Indian citizens no longer trust Prime Minister Modi. "Modi’s credibility is in tatters; he is manipulating the Pahalgam story for political gains ahead of elections," Asif said, noting that the Indian government has yet to provide any credible evidence regarding the incident. He accused Modi of fabricating narratives for electoral benefits, comparing the current situation to past false flag operations, including the Pulwama attack. Asif alleged that Modi had previously incited violence against Sikhs, Christians, and other minorities in India to consolidate support among extremist Hindu voters. The Defence Minister went further, accusing India of exporting terrorism to countries such as Canada and the United States. Concluding his remarks, Khawaja Asif asserted that Pakistan is fully prepared to defend itself against any aggression. "We are not only 100 percent but 200 percent ready to protect every inch of our land. We have no aggressive intentions, but any act of aggression will be met with a strong response," he declared.

Funds for 67,000 Pakistani Hajj pilgrims sent to wrong account

More than 67,000 Pakistani pilgrims could face delays in their Hajj journey after millions of Saudi Riyals meant for their expenses were mistakenly sent to the wrong bank account. According to the Hajj Organizers Association of Pakistan (HOAP), approximately 50 million Saudi Riyals were accidentally transferred to an OPEC Fund account instead of the official account of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. The error has delayed the payment process by more than a month. As a result, private Hajj operators missed the payment deadlines set by Saudi authorities, unaware that the funds were misdirected. Their bookings and pilgrimage plans have been severely disrupted. The situation has caused widespread concern among families of the pilgrims, many of whom now fear their loved ones may not be able to perform Hajj this year. In response, Pakistani authorities have formed a special subcommittee to investigate the error, trace the funds, and prevent similar incidents in the future. The committee will also coordinate with Saudi officials to resolve the issue swiftly. "This payment error has highlighted the urgent need for better coordination and communication between banks, private Hajj operators, and official agencies," HOAP representatives said. With limited time left before Hajj, efforts are underway to rectify the mistake and secure the travel arrangements for thousands of hopeful pilgrims.

Mengal blasts PPP for arresting women in Balochistan

Sardar Akhtar Mengal, chief of his faction of the BNP-M, on Friday lashed out at the PPP for arresting women in Balochistan, saying that even under Portuguese and British colonial rule or during martial law regimes, women were never taken into custody. He expressed these views during a public gathering held in Gwadar, where a large number of people, including women, children and the elderly, were present. "We are not here for political point scoring, but to raise our voice for the rights that have been denied to Balochistan," he said while addressing the crowd. Sardar Mengal said they are not afraid of being arrested, as their workers and colleagues have been detained during multiple authoritarian regimes. "We were arrested whether it was the dictatorship of General Ayub Khan or the era of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto," he added. He lamented that the PPP has always targeted Baloch youth, citing examples such as the Lyari gang war and the 1973 military operation in Balochistan. "They still say 'Bhutto Zinda Hai' - thank God he is not [alive], otherwise no home in Balochistan would have been spared," he said. He alleged that the very foundation of the PPP is built on the blood of Baloch youth. Questioning the state institutions, he said that courts can open at midnight to topple a government, but cannot listen to the grievances of the people of Balochistan. He added that Parliament can convene to pass a bill, but there is no room to hear the miseries of the Baloch people. "The state labels every voice raised against the atrocities in Balochistan as a terrorist. Today, Mahrang and Bebow are being labelled terrorists. Tomorrow, I too will be called one," he said. He said that despite having the latest technology, arms, and nuclear weapons, the state is afraid of Mahrang.

Pakistan confirms 8th polio case of 2025 amid vaccination campaign

National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed a new polio case in Bannu, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, bringing the total number of cases in the province this year to three and eight nationwide, authorities said Friday. The confirmation comes as Pakistan carries out its second nationwide polio vaccination campaign of the year, aiming to immunise over 45.4 million children under the age of five, including 2.6 million in the sparsely populated southwestern province of Balochistan. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had lauded the country’s anti-polio efforts in a high-level review meeting, noting that no new cases had been reported since February 10. He credited the success to ongoing nationwide initiatives and support from international partners. The current inoculation campaign, which began this week, will run until April 27, with another drive scheduled for May 26 to June 1. Health officials continue to urge parents to ensure their children are vaccinated multiple times to build immunity against the highly contagious virus. Polio remains endemic in only two countries worldwide, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The virus, which mainly affects children under five, can cause irreversible paralysis but is preventable with a few drops of oral vaccine.

Hajj 2025: PM to seek Saudi help for 67,000 Pakistani pilgrims

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said Saudi authorities would be approached to facilitate around 67,000 Pakistani pilgrims whose participation in Hajj 2025 is in jeopardy due to delays in finalising agreements and payments. Chairing a high-level meeting on the issue on Friday, the prime minister expressed deep concern over the crisis and directed authorities to make every possible effort to ensure the pilgrims' journey to the holy sites. He assured the delegation present that he would personally raise the matter with Saudi officials to secure approval for the affected pilgrims under the private quota. “This is a matter of shame for us,” he said, calling for swift and decisive action. “We must do everything in our power to resolve this issue and avoid denying thousands of people the chance to fulfil a sacred obligation,” he added. The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, members of the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs, and representatives from the Hajj Organizers Association of Pakistan (HOAP). The delegation briefed the prime minister on the crisis and appealed for his intervention to secure the necessary approvals for the pilgrims. Earlier, Secretary of Religious Affairs Dr Attaur Rehman told the Senate that the fate of the 67,000 pilgrims was no longer in the government’s hands, citing new policy changes introduced by Saudi Arabia. According to the secretary, Riyadh has now mandated that only Hajj group organisers with quotas of 2,000 or more will be allowed to operate. As a result, 904 existing organisers have been merged into 45 larger Hajj companies. The policy shift has complicated preparations and caused delays in payments and administrative coordination, leaving thousands of pilgrims at risk of being unable to perform Hajj in 2025.

The decision has been taken as part of the preparation process for the upcoming federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26. According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, clear instructions have been issued to all Principal Accounting Officers (PAOs) across ministries and divisions, setting the April 30 deadline to ensure the recovery of anticipated surplus funds from the fiscal year 2024–25. SC affirms women’s right to dowry, gifts post-divorce

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a landmark ruling affirming that a bride retains full ownership of her dowry and wedding gifts even after divorce, Express News reported. The judgment, authored by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and spanning seven pages, clearly states that all items given to the bride as dowry or gifts are her unconditional and exclusive property. The court ruled that neither the husband nor his relatives can claim ownership of dowry items or bridal gifts. Moreover, any gift presented to the groom or his family will not be considered part of the dowry. The judiciary, the verdict added, is only authorised to order the recovery of property that belongs exclusively to the bride. In its decision, the court emphasised that whether items were provided by the bride’s family, the groom, or the groom’s family, they remain the legal property of the bride. However, the ruling does not serve as an endorsement of the cultural practice of dowry. The judgment further clarified that, in line with Islamic teachings, only the haq mehr (mandatory marital payment) is obligatory, while the dowry is a societal custom that often leads to exploitation, pressure, and discrimination against women. The Supreme Court also noted that the judgment has been made more accessible to the public by including a QR code for ease of reference. The case was brought before the Supreme Court by petitioner Muhammad Sajid, who had sought a reduction in his financial obligations, including the return of dowry, following his divorce. The court dismissed his appeal and upheld the decision of the Lahore High Court, reaffirming the bride’s right to her dowry and maintenance.

Imran seeks briefing on controversial mines bill

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan has described the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mines and Minerals Bill as "controversial" and directed the party's legal committee and senior K-P leadership to brief him on the legislation, according to PTI lawyer Faisal Chaudhry. Speaking to reporters after meeting the incarcerated PTI supremo at Adiala Jail, Chaudhry said that Imran had raised concerns about the bill and stressed the need to take the public into confidence. "This bill has now become controversial. It is essential that people are made aware of its implications," he said. Chaudhry added that Imran stressed the critical need for both the establishment and PTI to steer Pakistan out of crisis. "The military alone cannot unite the country; only political forces can," he said. Chaudhry was among four lawyers, alongside Usman Riaz Gul, Faisal Malik and Muhammad Afzal, who were allowed to meet the PTI chief. He revealed that only two individuals on the official meeting list were granted jail access, while the rest, including senior lawyers and party leaders, were stopped at police checkpoints. He said legal briefings were given to the PTI founder by Usman Gul and Faisal Malik, particularly on cases not being listed in court and on alleged mistreatment of Bushra Bibi. Imran also discussed recent political developments and urged the party to write to the chief justice regarding post-26th Amendment legal concerns. Regarding foreign policy, particularly Afghanistan, the PTI chief reiterated that his administration had long advocated dialogue with the Afghan government to counter terrorism. Meanwhile, tensions flared outside Adiala Jail as the PTI founder's family, including his sisters Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Khan, were denied a meeting despite waiting for hours.

Pakistan, Russia agree to boost cooperation on terrorism threats in Afghanistan

Senior officials from Pakistan and Russia agreed on Tuesday to enhance their collaboration in combating terrorism, particularly in Afghanistan and the broader region, as both nations face growing security threats from armed militant groups, the Foreign Office said in a statement. The meeting, held in Moscow as part of the 11th session of the Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group to Counter International Terrorism, was attended by key officials from both sides. Pakistan’s delegation, led by Special Secretary (United Nations) Nabeel Munir, and Russia’s side, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, focused on the evolving nature of terrorism in the region. Both delegations discussed strategies to combat the increasingly transnational nature of terrorism. Pakistan has long expressed concerns over rising cross-border attacks, particularly from the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which it claims originates in Afghanistan. Kabul has denied these allegations. Similarly, Russia continues to grapple with the threat posed by Daesh militants, highlighted by the deadly March 22, 2024, attack at Moscow's Crocus City Hall, which left over 140 dead and many more injured. The talks emphasised the need for adaptive and cooperative approaches to counter these evolving threats. The discussions also underscored the importance of collective action in ensuring both regional and global security. The working group, which provides a platform for sharing experiences and strategies in the fight against terrorism, concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties. The next meeting of the working group will be scheduled for 2026. The 2023 meeting of the group, held on November 16, focused on national strategies for combating terrorism, marking a continuation of the growing cooperation between Pakistan and Russia in addressing shared security challenges.

PPP can topple govt but chooses restraint to avoid crisis, warns Murad

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah issued a warning to the federal government on Tuesday, asserting that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has the power to bring down the PML-N-led coalition but is choosing restraint to prevent a political crisis. Speaking to a private news channel, he stated: “We have infinite capacity. We can topple them, but we do not want to in order to avoid any crisis.” He cautioned the Centre, “Don’t push us to the point where a decision is made that causes everyone to lose.” The chief minister reiterated PPP's firm opposition to the federally-backed canal project under the Green Pakistan Initiative. “The people of Sindh will now only agree on one thing — that this project should be abandoned,” he said, calling the controversial plan the sole source of the ongoing crisis. Shah criticised the federal government’s handling of the canal issue, which has sparked widespread protests across Sindh. In response to a 72-hour ultimatum issued by demonstrators, he revealed that the federal government had initiated talks on the matter and that dialogue was progressing. He confirmed that construction on the over Rs250 billion canal project has currently been halted due to pressure from the Sindh government, adding that it had yet to receive approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). Raising concerns about water distribution, the chief minister questioned the Centre on where the additional water for the six new canals would be sourced. He emphasised that any such project must be approved with the consent of the lower riparian provinces. The government had sought permission from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) for the project, citing that 27% of river water flows into the sea. However, Murad noted that the proposal made no mention of water conservation measures and said that the Sindh government has formally challenged Irsa’s certification. “This case has been pending with the Council of Common Interests (CCI) since June last year,” he added.

Pakistan to expand fiber connectivity to 7.5m homes in five years

Pakistan plans to dramatically enhance its digital infrastructure by extending fiber-optic connectivity to 7.5 million households and achieving 80 percent fiber-to-the-site (FTTS) coverage within the next five years, the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication (MoITT) announced. These goals form a central part of the upcoming National Fiberization Policy, being crafted under the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP). The initiative aims to bolster the country’s fixed broadband infrastructure and raise average download speeds to 60 Mbps nationwide. A dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU) is being recruited to oversee the policy’s development. Once established, the PMU will hire a consultancy firm through a competitive bidding process to assist in finalizing the policy framework. This strategic move is designed to prepare Pakistan for emerging technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), while also ensuring robust digital connectivity. The policy emphasizes private sector investment and aims to eliminate long-standing deployment barriers by focusing on key areas such as rationalizing right-of-way (RoW) charges, streamlining approval procedures, and encouraging infrastructure sharing. According to MoITT, Pakistan currently has over 211,000 kilometers of deployed optical fiber cable, split between 75,967 km of long-haul and 135,506 km of metro fiber. However, officials say this infrastructure is insufficient to meet rising demand and evolving technological needs. The Telecom Wing of MoITT is leading the policy development in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and industry stakeholders. A series of consultations are planned to develop cost-sharing models and single-window clearance systems. The policy also aligns with broader economic goals, promoting local manufacturing of fiber-optic components to reduce import reliance. The final draft of the National Fiberization Policy is expected to be completed by the end of the year, setting the stage for a digitally connected and future-ready Pakistan.

PPP, PML-N two facesof same coin: PTI

The PTI has strongly condemned the PPP for its "hypocritical stance" over the controversial canals projects. The former ruling party alleged that while the PPP was publicly criticising the imposed regime over the water crisis, it was secretly striking backdoor deals betraying both Sindh's water rights and Balochistan's mineral wealth. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram asserted that PTI-led K-P government will staunchly defend the province's mineral wealth as an inalienable right of its people. He said that the provincial government would never compromise on the people's rightful ownership of mineral resources. He stressed that the proposed mineral bill would only move forward after comprehensive deliberations and the final approval of PTI founder Imran Khan. Waqas said that PPP and PML-N were two sides of the same coin, willing to "sacrifice national interests and plunder the country's resources to serve their vested political interests and personal financial gains". He alleged that the leadership of the PPP and PML-N were hand in glove and equally complicit in causing catastrophic damage to Pakistan's political, social and economic fabric.

Ogra hears SNGPL's plea for tariff hike

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) on Friday demanded an increase in the gas prices and requested the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to lift the ban on the issuance new connections to domestic consumers. The conducted the public hearing on these demands at the SNGPL headquarters, with Chairman OGRA Masroor Khan in the chair. during the hearing, the SNGPL requested for an increase of Rs735 per million British thermal unit (MMBtu). The utility also said that the regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) domestic connections should be allowed immediately because a ban on them was reducing its revenues. It argued that the gas price should be increased, so that expenses on the expansion projects were met. The representatives of the commercial, industrial and domestic consumers strongly opposed the price increase. They argued that the people were already burdened, adding that many commercial consumers had disconnected their gas connections. Hotels and textile sectors also opposed the tariff hike. The SNGPL, while explaining the reasons for tariff hike, said that the proposed average fixed price for fiscal 2025-26 was set at Rs2,485.72 per MMBtu, adding that 51% of the price increase was meant for providing expensive RLNG gas to system gas consumers. It added that another 39% of the price increase was for the late payment surcharge (LPS) applied to the gas sector's dues ie, circular debt. The SNGPL stated that the share of operating expenses in the total revenue requirements of the company was only 4-6%.

Fazlur Rehman rejects K-P's minerals bill, calls it threat to provincial autonomy

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday denounced the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government's proposed mines and minerals bill, calling it “unacceptable” and a violation of provincial autonomy. Speaking at a press conference in Peshawar, Fazl accused both the federal government and "international powers" of attempting to seize control of Pakistan’s natural resources. He warned that if “sensible decisions” were not taken, his party would take to the streets in protest. “This legislation undermines the 18th Amendment and infringes upon the rights of provinces,” Fazl said. “We will not allow the Centre or any foreign power to lay claim to our resources.” He alleged that the federal government had devised alternative legal mechanisms to bypass constitutional safeguards, pressuring provinces into forming new authorities to manage their mineral wealth. “If any country wants to invest, it must approach the provincial government through the Centre and respect local conditions,” he added. https://ift.tt/a2WBY41 The proposed bill, introduced by the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the K-P Assembly, has sparked criticism from opposition parties and within PTI itself. Critics argue the law risks centralising control of KP’s resources and weakening provincial authority. The K-P government has defended the bill, saying it aims to regulate investment, curb illegal mining, and attract foreign interest in the province’s mineral sector. Fazl also commented on the security situation in K-P, urging the government to engage in dialogue with Afghanistan and establish a clear policy for the repatriation and registration of Afghan refugees. His remarks followed reports that PTI founder Imran Khan, currently in jail, had instructed his party not to approve the legislation without his consultation with Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and other political leaders.

Miftah Ismail slams govt’s Rs20 petroleum levy hike, calls it a 'mini-budget'

Former finance minister Miftah Ismail called out the ruling coalition for back-to-back petroleum levy hikes, blaming the government for burdening citizens with a “mini-budget” and failing to pass on the benefit of falling global oil prices. He accused the government of abandoning basic economic practice, saying fuel prices should reflect global market changes — increasing when international rates rise and decreasing when they fall — a balance he claims is no longer being maintained. In a strongly worded post on X, Ismail revealed that the government raised the petroleum levy by Rs10 per litre in March and another Rs10 in April, bringing the total levy to Rs80 per litre. He estimated the move adds Rs34 billion in monthly tax revenue. “In these two months, the government has raised taxes by Rs34 billion per month instead of giving the benefit to the people,” he stated, arguing that petrol prices should drop when international oil prices fall. Ismail dismissed official claims that the levy hike would fund development in Balochistan. “Money is fungible… No new projects for Balochistan have been approved,” he said, alleging that the funds would go to general government expenditures instead. He also accused the government of making commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to maintain high fuel prices and continue increasing levies. “This is a mini-budget,” he declared. The criticism follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement that savings from falling oil prices would be redirected toward dualising the N-25 Highway (Chaman–Quetta–Kalat–Khuzdar–Karachi route) and completing Phase 2 of the Kachhi Canal project to irrigate land in Balochistan.

Kuwait approves two-year oil credit for Pakistan in energy partnership boost

Kuwait has extended its oil credit facility to Pakistan for an unprecedented two years, marking a deepening of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. The announcement was made during a meeting between Kuwaiti Ambassador Nassar Abdulrahman J Almutairi and Pakistan's Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik in Islamabad on Wednesday. According to a statement from the Petroleum Division, this is the first time Kuwait has granted Pakistan a two-year extension, as the facility has traditionally been renewed on an annual basis. Minister Malik thanked Kuwait for its continued support, describing the gesture as a timely boost to Pakistan’s energy security and economic resilience. He also appreciated the "special accommodations" made by Kuwait in recognition of Pakistan’s evolving needs. Ambassador Almutairi reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to expanding economic and energy ties with Pakistan, expressing confidence in the country’s current growth trajectory. Discussions during the meeting also explored new investment opportunities in Pakistan’s petroleum sector. The extended oil credit facility is expected to ease pressure on Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves, which have remained under strain due to high energy import costs. In February, Saudi Arabia extended a $1.2 billion oil financing facility through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) for another year. Since 2019, the SFD has provided around $6.7 billion to Pakistan for the import of oil derivatives.

Imran hasn't authorised deal talks: Gohar

Former prime minister Imran Khan has not authorized any leader of his party to hold talks with the powers that be for any "deal", said PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan while talking to the media after a meeting with Imran at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail. Last week, senior PTI leader Azam Khan Swati had said he would work to initiate dialogue between Imran Khan and army chief General Syed Asim Munir. He had emphasised the importance of the military, calling it "a key national institution and a source of pride." he had denied suggestions that his release came as part of any deal, maintaining that his loyalty to Imran Khan remained "unshaken." However, the PTI had distanced itself from reports, suggesting that Azam Swati was engaged in talks with the military establishment. Speaking to the media in Lahore, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on April 12 stated such actions were not sanctioned by the party leadership. However, Swati on Tuesday once again claimed that Imran Khan had agreed to hold negotiations. Speaking to reporters outside an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Swati said that Imran Khan is deeply concerned about the future of the country and the wellbeing of future generations. However, Gohar Ali Khan on Tuesday stated that Imran Khan has not authorized anyone to negotiate "a deal". According to Gohar, during the meeting the PTI founder also strictly instructed his party leaders not to issue any statement against the leader of any other party in the media. Khan lamented that the Adiala Jail authorities continued to flout the Islamabad High Court (IHC) order with regard to Imran's visitation rights.

Senate panel backs bill to ensure timely maintenance for divorced women, children

A Senate sub-committee on Monday unanimously approved the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which mandates family courts to fix monthly maintenance for financially dependent female divorcees and their children at the very first hearing. The bill, introduced by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri on September 9, 2024, seeks to provide immediate financial relief to women and children left vulnerable during prolonged divorce proceedings. Zehri highlighted that nearly 90% of women in Pakistan lack independent income, making timely maintenance essential. Under the proposed amendment, courts must set a fixed maintenance amount at the initial hearing. If the defendant fails to pay by the 14th of each month, they forfeit their right to present a defence, allowing the court to rule based solely on the complainant’s claims and evidence. Chairing the meeting, Senator Zamir Hussain Ghumro stressed the constitutional duty of the state under Article 35 to protect the family unit, particularly women and children. He noted that delays in maintenance decisions weaken social protections and harm vulnerable families. Senator Anusha Rahman Ahmad Khan also supported the bill, calling it a progressive step toward safeguarding women’s rights. She encouraged further legislation in this direction. The additional secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice noted that similar reforms are already implemented in Punjab, although the ministry’s jurisdiction is limited to federal matters. Following unanimous approval by the sub-committee, the bill now moves to the main Senate committee, with full Senate consideration expected in the coming sessions.

Pakistan, Morocco begin joint military exercise

The armed forces of Pakistan and Morocco commenced the third edition of their joint bilateral military exercise on Monday, focusing on counter-terrorism training and professional skill enhancement, according to a statement from Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The opening ceremony took place at the Special Operations School in Cherat, a military training facility nestled in the hilly terrain of northwestern Pakistan’s Nowshera district. The exercise, titled Pak-Morocco Joint Bilateral Military Exercise-2025, brings together Pakistan’s elite Special Services Group (SSG) and Moroccan special forces. The goal, ISPR noted, is to foster interoperability, exchange tactical expertise, and reinforce long-standing defense ties between the two nations. “The exercise is aimed at refining professional skills through joint training and harnessing historic military-to-military relations among the friendly countries,” ISPR said in a statement. Pakistan shares a history of warm diplomatic and military relations with several Arab countries, including Morocco. These ties frequently translate into joint training drills, defense production partnerships, and counter-terrorism intelligence sharing. Last year, the collaboration extended into the aerospace domain, when Moroccan Air Force Inspector Major General Mohammed Gadih visited Pakistan and discussed expanding military cooperation. During his visit, the Pakistan Air Force chief reaffirmed the country’s commitment to offering basic and tactical training programs to Moroccan personnel. The ongoing military exercise is seen as another step toward strengthening defense diplomacy and operational coordination between the two Islamic nations.

PTI distances itself from Swati's deal remarks

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Saturday said that recent remarks by senior party leader Azam Swati regarding a potential deal with the establishment have no connection with the beleaguered party. He said he was unaware of any ongoing dialogue between the party and the establishment. Speaking to the media outside Lahore's anti-terrorism court (ATC), Raja said that Swati might have been acting independently when he claimed to be in contact with key power brokers to negotiate a deal "for the sake of the country". "I can only confirm any such development after meeting PTI founding chairman Imran Khan. The situation is unclear until then," Raja said. "We are not being allowed to meet him, and there is considerable confusion." "We do not support abductions or unlawful detentions. If a dialogue can ensure citizens' basic rights and personal freedoms, we would welcome it. But we cannot accept anything less," he said. The party secretary general further said the PTI has always advocated for the rule of law, supremacy of the constitution and the country. "That is our core ideology. If the process moves forward from here, that is fine, but if anyone thinks we're looking for a backdoor exit, that's simply not true." He added that the situation would become clearer once a meeting is held with PTI founder Imran Khan. "The reason they're not allowing us to meet the founder of PTI is to create ambiguity. Only after that meeting will we know whether he has authorised any dialogue," Raja said.

Exam papers leak across Sindh as cheating plagues matric exams

Efforts to curb cheating in Sindh’s ongoing matriculation exams have fallen short, as question papers were leaked and answers shared on social media in several cities on Saturday, including Hyderabad, Shikarpur, and Nawabshah. According to media reports, the Hyderabad Board’s claims to prevent cheating proved ineffective as the 10th-grade chemistry paper was leaked before the exam and its answers circulated widely across social media platforms. In Shikarpur, the 10th-grade biology paper also surfaced online ahead of the exam. A similar incident occurred in Nawabshah, where the mathematics paper under the Shaheed Benazirabad Board was leaked along with its solutions. Meanwhile, in Khairpur, reports emerged of students copying answers with firearms placed openly on desks, highlighting severe security lapses. Under the Sukkur Board, the biology paper was held Saturday. In an attempt to ensure transparency, monitoring teams from the Sukkur Board and local administration conducted surprise visits to multiple exam centers. Despite these efforts, officials confirmed that over 250 cases of cheating were recorded in just four days, according to the controller of examinations at the Sukkur Board. Education authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive response, as widespread paper leaks continue to undermine examination integrity across the province.

Imran's nod a must to pass K-P mines bill

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has unanimously decided that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Mines and Minerals Bill will only be passed after thorough consultation and with the formal approval and confidence of its founding chairman, Imran Khan. The decision was made in the party's political committee meeting held to discuss the Mines and Minerals Bill presented in the provincial assembly. During the meeting, CM K-P Ali Amin Gandapur gave a comprehensive and detailed briefing on all key aspects of the bill. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, in a statement, said that the political committee reviewed all dimensions of the bill threadbare and unanimously agreed that the bill did not contain any clause transferring provincial autonomy, rights or mineral resources to the federation, SIFC, or any other federal institution. He said that during the meeting, it was agreed that positive suggestions from all stakeholders would be welcomed and consultation with other parliamentary parties would continue to evolve a wide-range consensus before the final approval of the bill. The PTI leader said that the bill has already been presented in the K-P Assembly and was under discussion. However, it would only be approved by the assembly after obtaining Imran Khan's formal approval and fully aligning it with his agenda, manifesto, narrative, and public aspirations. Waqas made it clear that there has been no haste in the approval of this bill, nor will there be any in the future. Meanwhile, he disclosed that Imran strictly prohibited the individuals who met him from discussing meeting details or instructions with the media. He said that as per Imran Khan's instructions, those who met with him must submit written details of his instructions to the central secretary information, as only the central secretary information was authorised to issue these written instructions and statements. Waqas stated that any statements from other sources would not be considered official or credible from now onward. Moreover, he asserted that PTI founder strictly refrained the party officials from making statements against one another. He said that violators would face show-cause notices, and those holding party positions would be stripped of their responsibilities. Waqas said that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has been briefed about the authority and powers of the Punjab's chief organiser, adding that a six-member advisory committee would be formed under the chief organiser. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Mines and Minerals Bill, 2025, has stirred up a firestorm of criticism, with PTI founder Imran Khan's sister Aleema Khan calling for putting the proposed legislation on hold. The criticism, which came mostly from the ruling PTI's leaders and social media activists, was so harsh that Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur had to put out a statement on Tuesday night, dismissing "rumours and misconceptions" regarding the proposed amendments. The bill, which was tabled in the provincial assembly on April 4, was ripped apart by both ruling and opposition lawmakers.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday announced the creation of a Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), as well as a new Centre for Excellence to counter violent extremism. The announcements were made during the 32nd apex committee meeting chaired by CM Murad at the Chief Minister’s House. The high-level meeting was attended by provincial ministers, security officials, and representatives from key federal and provincial departments. The social media authority will be empowered to regulate unlawful or offensive content, enforce content standards, manage platform registration, and recommend full or partial blocking of platforms. It will also have the authority to direct concerned departments to remove harmful online content. “This step is aimed at ensuring digital safety and protecting the rights of individuals on social media,” the chief minister stated. The provincial government also revealed plans to establish a Centre for Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism, which will focus on research, strategy, and policy development to combat extremism. The centre will support terror financing investigations for the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and help counter online radicalisation, hate speech, and youth delinquency. CM Murad instructed the home secretary to present the draft legislation for the centre at the next cabinet meeting. The chief minister also called for enhanced coordination with Punjab and Balochistan to conduct joint operations against bandits in the riverine areas. Discussing the repatriation of illegal foreign nationals, Shah said the provincial government had completed the first phase of the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan (IFRP), deporting over 85,000 undocumented individuals during 2023–24. Transit centres for repatriation were set up in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Jacobabad under the supervision of respective deputy commissioners. Expressing concern over the rising number of road accidents and recent arson incidents involving oil tankers and dumpers, CM Murad ordered law enforcement to strictly enforce traffic regulations and apprehend those responsible for sabotage.

Member of the National Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hassan of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has submitted two legislative bills in the National Assembly, seeking amendments to the Pakistan Citizenship Act and the Pakistan Penal Code. According to Express News, the first bill, titled the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2025, proposed granting citizenship rights to individuals — or their parents — born in former East Pakistan or those who migrated to Pakistan between 1971 and 1982 following the fall of Dhaka. The bill noted, "The people of East Pakistan made sacrifices for the country and migrated to West Pakistan after the fall of Dhaka. This law aims to secure their citizenship rights." The second bill proposed amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure to make phone snatching and street robberies officially punishable offences. The proposed Section 382-A outlines that individuals found guilty of such crimes can be arrested without a warrant and may not be eligible for bail. The bill emphasised the need to address the growing threat of street crime on public roads and in urban areas. It states that legal amendments are necessary to empower law enforcement and ensure the judiciary can take effective action.

Providing X users' list not possible, LHC told

The government has informed the Lahore High Court (LHC) that it is not possible for it to provide a list containing names of the government officials who use X—formerly Twitter—even after imposing a temporary ban on the platform. A three-member bench led by LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum on Tuesday resumed hearing a plea seeking directions for the government to enhance the internet speed, restore X and lift a ban on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and some other social media platforms. As proceedings commenced, the additional attorney general told the court that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had submitted a report in this case. He said the LHC had sought a list of the government officials who use X "but it is not possible to provide such list". Speaking on the occasion, the petitioner's counsel, Azhar Siddique, said the federal government and the PTA are not on the same page on X's ban. Justice Neelum remarked that there is no concept of "same page" in courts. "You and the court are also not on the same page," she added. Siddique reiterated that no response was submitted by the federal government in writing, underlining the reason why X had been made dysfunctional. "The court sought a list of those in government who use X but the list is not presented," he added. CJ Aalia Neelum remarked that Attorney-General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan should come prepared to the court on April 17 and shed light on all the legal aspects of X ban. In his plea filed through Siddique, the petitioner—journalist Hafiz Shakir Mahmood—contended that according to the World Population Review (WPR), Pakistan was ranked 198th globally in internet speed. This placed Pakistan below countries such as Palestine, Bhutan, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and Libya. The petitioner stated that this ranking is a significant indicator of the country's digital infrastructure and its ability to support modern communication needs. The low ranking reflects the challenges faced by Pakistani citizens in accessing reliable and fast internet services, which are essential for various aspects of daily life, including education, business, and social interactions. He argued that the executive failed to perform its duty under Article(s) 9, 29 and 38 of the Constitution. "In such an event, courts would have rightly referred to the well-informed opinion of the government, keeping in view the constitutionally defined separation of powers between organs of the state." He said fundamental rights of the people and also the duties of the executive organ of the state under Article(s) 29 and 38 (a) of the Constitution have been breached and requested the court to direct the relevant authorities to take immediate and effective measures to enhance the internet speed. This, he said, includes upgrading the existing digital infrastructure, investing in new technologies such as 5G and fiber-optic networks, and ensuring that internet service providers deliver speeds that meet global standards. "The improvement of internet speed is essential to support the fundamental rights of the citizens, including access to information, education, and economic opportunities." He also requested the court to pass an order for lifting a ban on VPNs in Pakistan. VPNs are crucial for ensuring online privacy and security, especially in a digital age where data breaches and cyber threats are prevalent. The unrestricted use of VPNs will enable citizens to protect their personal information and maintain their digital privacy. He further requested the court to pass direction for the restoration of access to X and other social media platforms that have been banned. "Social media platforms are vital for free expression, communication, and the dissemination of information. The ban on these platforms infringes upon the citizens' right to freedom of speech and hampers their ability to engage in public discourse," he added.

US ends flagship student exchange programme

The Global Undergraduate Exchange Programme (Global UGRAD) for Pakistan has officially come to a close after 15 years, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) confirmed on Tuesday. The semester-long exchange initiative, which allowed Pakistani undergraduate students to study at a US university or college for one non-degree semester, was administered by the USEFP and funded by the US government. In a statement, the Foundation announced: "We regret to inform you that after 15 incredible years, the Global Undergraduate Exchange Programme for Pakistan has come to an end. The US Department of State informed USEFP that the Global UGRAD-Pakistan Programme will no longer be offered. We understand that this news may be disappointing, especially for those who applied this year and were looking forward to this opportunity." The USEFP described the programme as having offered "life-changing experiences" to thousands of students across its run, facilitating academic enrichment, cultural exchange and leadership development. Launched in 2010, the programme aimed to cultivate a spirit of service and leadership among Pakistani youth while enhancing their engagement within their communities. In its farewell message, USEFP expressed pride in the transformative role the exchange had played. "While this chapter is closing, we encourage you to explore other exchange and scholarship opportunities that may align with your aspirations," it said.

US sanctions Pakistani firms over national security concerns

The United States Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has added over a dozen Pakistani firms to its Entity List for their involvement in "unsafeguarded" nuclear activities, with an additional seven firms facing restrictions for their contributions to Pakistan’s ballistic missile program. The move follows recent changes to the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and affects 70 entities from China, Pakistan, Iran, South Africa, and the UAE, as reported on the US Federal Register website. The listed firms are considered to pose a significant risk to US national security or foreign policy interests. Among the Pakistani companies added to the list for their nuclear-related activities are Britlite Engineering, Indentech International, IntraLink Incorporated, Proc-Master, Rehman Engineering and Services, and others. The US government stated that these entities are "acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States." The new restrictions will limit their access to US technology, requiring additional licenses for exports, re-exports, and in-country transfers involving these companies. Additionally, seven firms have been sanctioned for their alleged role in Pakistan's ballistic missile program, including Allied Business Concerns, Global Traders, and Linkers Automation. These companies are primarily based in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Wah Cantonment, although they were not immediately available for comment. In response to the sanctions, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry criticized the move, calling it "unfair" and politically motivated. Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan argued that these actions were counterproductive to global export control objectives and obstructed the country’s access to technology needed for socio-economic development. The latest sanctions come as US-Pakistan relations remain strained following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. The tensions were further escalated last week when the US imposed a 29% reciprocal tariff on imports from Pakistan. Analysts warn that this could impact Pakistan’s $17 billion textiles industry. Pakistan’s foreign ministry has condemned the sanctions and reiterated that the country’s strategic capabilities are vital for defending its sovereignty and regional peace. The government is planning to send a high-level delegation to Washington to discuss the new tariffs, which Pakistan hopes could be leveraged into an opportunity for mutual benefit. The US government had previously imposed sanctions on Pakistan’s National Development Complex and several Karachi-based commercial entities in December 2023. These actions have been similarly criticized by Pakistan, which insists they are based on unwarranted suspicion rather than evidence.

Dar reassures Sindh's water share won't be affected amid canal project concerns

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday assured that Sindh’s share of water would not be compromised due to the proposed six-canal project over the Indus River, as protests against the project continue in the province. Speaking in the National Assembly, he reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to upholding provincial water rights. “The government is dealing with the issue of water distribution with transparency and care,” he said, adding that the canal project—first proposed in July 2023—had been delayed at Sindh’s request to allow for a thorough review. “I urged my colleagues not to make any decisions without full consultation. We are partners, not dictators,” Dar stressed, confirming that the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) had not approved the project and that stakeholder consent was still pending. Addressing political criticism, Dar rejected accusations of water theft. “The allegations that Punjab is stealing Sindh’s water are completely baseless,” he said, accusing certain political groups of exploiting the issue to gain relevance. He revealed that in a recent meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, he proposed an independent technical assessment of the project to safeguard Sindh’s water rights. Additionally, two new telemetry monitoring points are being installed to enhance transparency, he said. “We are not pushing this project forward for political reasons,” Dar maintained. “We are handling it with wisdom and balance.” The DPM reaffirmed adherence to the 1991 Water Accord, stating, “No province, including Punjab, will receive water meant for Sindh. Let there be no doubt — Sindh’s share of water is secure.” Calling for unity and cooperation, Dar urged leaders to avoid politicising the issue. “Pakistan is a federation of four provinces, and our strength lies in unity. We must move forward with fairness and transparency.” Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf also addressed the session, stressing the urgency of resolving water distribution disputes. “The PPP is fully committed to protecting the rights of all provinces,” he said. PPP MNA Shazia Marri echoed these concerns, calling the water crisis a national issue that requires serious dialogue rather than blame games. MNA Ejaz Jakhrani emphasised constructive engagement between political parties, adding that equal rights for all provinces are essential for justice and national unity.

Power Division clarifies rumours about changes in electricity tariffs

The spokesperson for Power Division, Zafaryab Khan, has addressed rumours surrounding changes in electricity tariffs, stating that the federal government will implement the recently announced relief in power prices. In an interview with APP, Zafaryab Khan dismissed reports about changes to electricity rates, calling them baseless and contradictory. He added that certain elements were deliberately spreading false information about electricity rates and technical details, distorting the facts. “These reports misrepresent the government’s official position and are aimed at creating confusion among the public,” he said. The spokesperson emphasised that the announcement by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding a reduction in electricity rates is accurate, and its implementation will proceed as planned. Zafaryab Khan noted that, in light of the upcoming summer season, the Prime Minister had instructed immediate action to ease the burden on consumers. Following the Prime Minister’s announcement, NEPRA conducted a public hearing on April 4 to implement the relief package without delay. He further confirmed that the federal cabinet had already approved the relief package, which will apply to all power distribution companies across the country. The spokesperson attributed the achievement of this relief to months of negotiations, including talks with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to reduce tariffs. He also stated that discussions on tariff categories are unnecessary at this stage since the relief is now reaching the public. “The government deserves credit for this timely intervention,” he concluded.
