The Punjab government will launch Pakistan’s first-ever ration card program on May 1, aiming to support more than 1.25 million low-income families across the province, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on Friday. Speaking at a ceremony in Lahore, Maryam said the 'Punjab Ration Card' will provide financial assistance of Rs10,000 over a four-month period to families struggling to meet basic food expenses. The programme is particularly focused on the labour class and daily wage earners. “This initiative is for those who are unable to afford their kitchen essentials,” she said, adding that the government intends to expand the program beyond the initial 1.25 million families based on available resources. Highlighting her government’s broader welfare agenda, Maryam revealed that 30,000 low-cost housing units are currently under construction across Punjab, an achievement she said surpasses the record of any previous administration. “In just five months, 30,000 houses are being built. No government in Pakistan’s history has constructed even 3,000 houses in five years. By the end of this year, 100,000 homes will be completed, God willing,” she said. “Our aim is to ensure that every deserving citizen has a roof over their head and the means to build a dignified life,” she added.
