Fazlur Rehman warns of protests over underage marriage ban bill

JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman condemned the proposed bill seeking to ban underage marriages, warning that failure to withdraw it could force his party to take to the streets, Express News reported. Speaking in the National Assembly on Monday, Rehman criticised the timing of the bill, arguing that the country needs unity and solidarity, not controversy. “This is a time to promote national cohesion, yet the government is pushing forward a divisive bill,” he said. Referring to the bill that prohibits marriage for individuals under the age of 18, he questioned the necessity of introducing such legislation at this critical moment. “If I oppose the bill, people will question my stance, but I must raise my voice,” he stated. He urged the Speaker of the National Assembly to issue a ruling against the bill and cautioned the government not to compel his party to protest on the streets. “It would be better to halt this legislation and refer it to the Council of Islamic Ideology. If they find no objection, I too will have none,” he added. Aman volunteer killed in Lakki attack

 A member of the Aman Committee was killed in a terrorist attack on a village in Lakki district. According to details, over 50 armed assailants, carrying both light and heavy weapons, stormed the village. In response, Aman Committee volunteers and local residents jointly resisted the assault, leading to a fierce hour-long clash. The attackers were eventually forced to retreat. However, during the exchange of fire, one Aman committee member lost his life. According to police, hundreds of Aman Committee volunteers had been on alert due to a history of confrontations with armed militants, and were prepared for a possible attack.

Qureshi moved to hospital after chest pain

PTI senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was transferred from Kot Lakhpat Jail to Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Saturday after suffering chest pain, officials said. The PTI leader was moved to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) shortly after dawn. Qureshi, who has been in custody since August 2023, experienced discomfort following Fajr prayers. Prison doctors conducted an initial assessment, but his condition did not improve, prompting a transfer via Rescue 1122, according to his lawyer, Rana Mudassar.

Kaira urges political reconciliation, calls for ‘forgive and forget’ policy

Amid a celebratory national mood following Pakistan’s military success against India at the borders, senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira, without naming PTI, said it was high time to bridge the political divide. He advised Khan’s party to make amends and called on the government to adopt a policy of forgiveness. At the same press conference, PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Syed Hasan Murtaza, taking a swipe at Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari for crediting Nawaz Sharif with war planning, said that “at least one should lie within some limits”. He said repeated lies, if not publicly exposed, begin to sound like the truth. Murtaza asserted that the real credit for making Pakistan’s defence invincible belonged to the PPP leadership. “If there’s any one party that had a role in strengthening Pakistan’s defence — from signing the MoU for the JF-17 to building heavy industries, from weapons to tanks, planes to missiles — it’s the PPP,” he said. He credited both the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and the late Benazir Bhutto, claiming that Bhutto launched Pakistan’s atomic programme, a decision that ultimately cost him his life. “Anyone can blow up a bomb and take credit for it.” Murtaza asserted that other parties could at best take credit for merely continuing the defence programmes initiated by PPP governments. "Others should try to lay claims to their achievement by posting photos," he added. He also took a jibe at Rana Sanaullah for "falsely claiming that the war was over on May 7”.  He said that if the prime minister claims credit for downing six planes, then he should also take responsibility for the seventh — the "Adiala aircraft," which he described as a creation of India’s Modi and Israel’s Netanyahu. Earlier, while commenting on the Indo-Pak conflict, Qamar Zaman Kaira, a member of the PPP central executive committee, said that despite India’s jingoism, it would eventually have to come to the negotiating table.  He stressed that lasting peace in the region is not possible without resolving the Kashmir issue. “India should implement its plebiscite promise to the Kashmiri nation and leadership,” he said, adding that PPP wants the matter settled through negotiations. Addressing the media at the residence of PPP Central Punjab Deputy General Secretary Usman Malik — alongside Syed Hasan Murtaza, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed and Chaudhry Aslam Gul — Kaira said that the PPP united a broken country.  He said: "Bhutto laid the foundation of a strong defence system and heavy chemical complex. JF-17 Thunder is being built in this HMC. Bibi Shaheed brought missile technology to Pakistan. Asif Zardari revived Pak-China friendship as president." He added that China now supports Pakistan both financially and defensively: "The work started by Bhutto Shaheed was completed by Asif Zardari, while Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, as foreign minister, fought for Pakistan’s cause like his grandfather and mother." The former federal minister stated that despite being a major victim of terrorism, "we want to cooperate in ending it." He said, "This is not a war of credit. Bhutto had created a broken country and a defeated nation. Instead of erasing someone's line, I should follow my own line." NA approves extension of CSS age limit, exam attempts from 2026

The National Assembly on Friday passed a resolution to increase the maximum age limit for candidates appearing in the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination from 30 to 35 years, with the new policy set to take effect from 2026, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. The move, introduced by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML‑N) MNA Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, was brought before the House after a successful motion to suspend procedural rules. The resolution was passed without opposition, reflecting broad parliamentary support. Alongside the age limit increase, the resolution also allows candidates a total of five attempts at the CSS exam. Lawmakers urged the government to implement these changes without delay to give prospective applicants sufficient time to prepare under the revised criteria. Diesel price slashed by Rs2/litre, petrol unchanged

The federal government kept the petrol price unchanged for the next fortnight while it slashed high speed diesel price by Rs2 per litre. The new prices will be applicable from May 16. According to a notification issued by the Finance Department, the petrol will continue to be sold at Rs252.63 per litre while the high speed diesel (HSD) will be sold at Rs254.64 per litre with the decline of Rs2 per litre. Besides, the price of kerosene oil was reduced by Rs5.04 per litre to Rs164.65 per litre and the price of light diesel oil was declined by Rs4.68 per litre to Rs150.65 per litre.

PM calls for national agri-innovation plan and regulatory overhaul

The meeting was attended by federal ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Musadik Malik, along with senior government officials. This development comes as Pakistan's agriculture sector is facing significant challenges. According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) and Topline Research, the sector’s growth rate dropped to 1.1% in the second quarter of FY 2024–25, down from 6.1% in the same quarter of FY 2023–24. The sharp decline has been largely attributed to a 31% fall in cotton production and a 15.4% drop in maize output, both of which are vital to the sector’s overall performance. PMDC eases MBBS, BDS admission criteria

The PMDC has relaxed the merit criteria by 5 per cent for students seeking admission to MBBS and BDS programs across the country. The one-time relief aims to fill vacant seats, following a request from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro, Sindh. The university urged the PMDC to ease the admission criteria due to a significant number of unfilled seats. After thorough deliberation, the PMDC approved the relaxation in the public interest. However, this concession will apply only for the 2024-25 academic session. The MDCAT will not use it as a precedent in any other admission process. According to PMDC, the initiative has been taken to fill vacant seats across the country. It has directed medical institutions to complete the admission process within the given timeframe. The sources said medical colleges are now permitted to admit students with a minimum of 50 per cent marks for MBBS and 45 per cent for BDS under the revised criteria. As many as 116 MBBS and 338 BDS seats are vacant at private medical colleges in Sindh, while in Punjab, 26 MBBS and 100 BDS seats are unfilled.

Imran Khan ready for talks: K-P CM Gandapur

1.3 million Afghans repatriated since November, NA told

The government has repatriated approximately 1.3 million Afghan refugees in a deportation drive launched since November 2023, Parliamentary Secretary Mukhtar Ahmad Malik said on Wednesday, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. The government initially said it was first focusing on expelling foreigners with no legal documentation and other categories, such as Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) — a document launched in 2017 to grant temporary legal status to Afghan refugees — would be included later. Responding to a question raised by lawmaker Anjum Aqeel Khan during a parliamentary session, Malik said around 3 million Afghan refugees were residing in Pakistan. “Of these, 813,000 hold Afghan Citizen Cards (ECC) while 1.3 million possess Proof of Registration (PoR) cards,” he was quoted as saying. He highlighted that Afghan nationals who wish to enter Pakistan for medical treatment, education, or business purposes are welcome to do so provided they obtain a Pakistani visa and carry valid documentation with them. Earlier this year, the country’s interior ministry asked all “illegal foreigners” and ACC holders to leave the country before March 31, warning that they would otherwise be deported from April 1. Authorities subsequently started deporting thousands of Afghan nationals from all parts of the country. In total, Pakistan has hosted over 2.8 million Afghan refugees who crossed the border during 40 years of conflict in their homeland.

All CAA aviation security officers gain international certification

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced on Tuesday that all officers in its Directorate of Aviation Security have been internationally certified as Aviation Security Inspectors, following a UK-sponsored training program delivered by instructors accredited by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The certification, facilitated by the UK Department for Transport (DfT), marks a significant milestone in aligning Pakistan’s aviation security protocols with global standards. The move is expected to enhance regulatory oversight, strengthen compliance, and boost Pakistan’s rating under ICAO’s global audit framework. “This training will play a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities of our national aviation security inspectors and help increase compliance with international standards,” the CAA said in an official statement. Conducted in Pakistan, the training program was led by ICAO-qualified UK instructors and formally designates all CAA officers in the security directorate as certified inspectors. This accreditation empowers them to carry out safety and compliance assessments according to ICAO’s Universal Security Audit Program (USAP), which evaluates how effectively member states implement international aviation security oversight systems. Pakistan has previously achieved a high ranking in South Asia under ICAO’s Effective Implementation Rating, a global benchmark measuring adherence to international aviation safety and security standards. Additionally, the CAA said it is expanding its inspector training programs through international academic placements. Two officers have been selected for fully funded postgraduate studies in France and South Korea, through coordination with the respective civil aviation authorities of both countries.

PTI’s Junaid Akbar resigns as PAC chairman

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Junaid Akbar has stepped down as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), just four months after assuming the role. In a video statement, Akbar confirmed that he submitted his resignation to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. He said he fully accepted the party's decision, expressing unwavering loyalty to PTI founder Imran Khan. "Whatever decision is made by the party or Imran Khan, I will not hesitate for even a minute and will accept it wholeheartedly," he said. "Titles don’t matter to me. If Khan even asks me to step down as party president or resign from parliament, I would do so without question," he added. While the PAC chairmanship is traditionally held by the leader of the opposition or their nominee, there is no legal requirement enforcing this convention. The position had remained vacant since the February 2024 general elections. Initially, Sher Afzal Marwat was nominated, followed by Sheikh Waqas Akram and Omar Ayub Khan. Akbar's name was eventually finalised for the role.

Pakistan, India agree to uphold ceasefire

Senior military officials from Pakistan and India on Monday held their first round of talks through a hotline and agreed to maintain the ceasefire agreed on Saturday after the five-days of war. As part of the ceasefire deal, brokered by the United States, Director General Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan Major General Kashif Abdullah and his Indian counterpart Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai spoke to each other. "Issues related to continuing the commitment that both sides must not fire a single shot or initiate any aggressive and inimical action against each other were discussed," the Indian army said. "It was also agreed that both sides consider immediate measures to ensure troop reduction from the borders and forward areas," it added. Far from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rhetoric in his first speech after the conflict, the Indian military official pushed for maintaining the ceasefire. Pakistan, on the other hand, confirmed the contact but provided no details. Officials said both sides would have a second round in the next 48 hours. The US-brokered ceasefire between the two nuclear powers remained intact overnight. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio while announcing the details of the ceasefire had said that both sides would start talks on a range of broader issues at a neutral venue. Modi on Monday hinted at talks but insisted that they would focus on "terrorism" and "part of Kashmir that was under Pakistan's control" – a reference to Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK). The statement meant that India had agreed to the talks, while Modi's focus on terrorism and AJK was an attempt to appease his domestic audience. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that the issue of Kashmir and Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) would be on the priority list of Pakistan, whenever the talks with India take place. Hours before Modi's speech, where he said "operation Sindoor" was only suspended, the Pakistani military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), issued a statement, warning India that any future attempt to threaten territorial integrity of Pakistan would invoke a befitting response. The latest escalation between India and Pakistan started on April 22 when 26 people were killed in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) tourist resort of Pahalgam. Without providing any evidence India immediately blamed Pakistan for the attack. India also took hostile measures on April 23, holding the 65-year-old IWT in abeyance, cancelling visas of Pakistani citizens, closing the Wagah-Attari border crossing, shutting the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and drastically cutting the diplomatic strength at each other's missions. Pakistan denied the Indian accusation without proof. However, the National Security Committee (NSC) also took counter measures, including halting any trade with India, closing Pakistani airspace for Indian planes and others. The situation escalated further in the wee hours of May 7, when missiles struck six cities in Punjab and AJK, destroying several mosques. Dozens of innocent civilians, including women and children and elderly, were martyred in the night-time attack. The Pakistani forces presented a prompted yet very forceful response to the enemy, shooting down their five warplanes, including three Rafales – the pride of the Indian Air Force. For the next two days India sent swarms of Israeli-made drones which were also downed by the Pakistani military. In yet further escalating in the wee hours of Saturday, India fired missiles fired at some Pakistani airbases. Hours later, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, destroying and damaging 26 Indian military installations – missiles storages, airbases, and other targets. In the evening, US President Donald Trump announced that after all-night diplomacy, both Pakistan and India had agreed to ceasefire. Minutes later Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the development and then the Indian foreign secretary. Trump said on Monday that the United States intervention prevented a "bad nuclear war" between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, adding that the US was ready to help both the counties in the wake of the ceasefire agreement that his administration helped broker. "We stopped a nuclear conflict. I think it could have been a bad nuclear war, millions of people could have been killed. So I'm very proud of that," Trump told reporters at the White House. Pakistan Navy’s effective strategy kept INS Vikrant confined to India’s territorial waters

The Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was prevented from any maritime adventurism against Pakistan in the North Arabian Sea due to the well-coordinated strategy of the Pakistan Navy during the recent hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, officials with the Pakistan Navy told The Express Tribune. The Pakistani military launched a massive operation codenamed 'Bunyanum Marsoos' (Formidable Wall) in response to the Indian aggression, targeting their airbases, airfields, weapon depots, missile stockpiles, brigade headquarters, etc. Like the other two services, the Pakistan Navy also played a key role in this swift operation. The Indian Navy remained confined to its own territorial waters and did not dare to challenge the Pakistan Navy in the south, according to the officials.  Throughout the entire period of tension, the Indian Navy could not advance any of its warships or aircraft towards Pakistan due to the strict surveillance and constant presence of the Pakistan Navy, one official added. “As a result of this strong strategic posture, the Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikrant posed no threat to Pakistan and avoided any kind of maritime operation.” The Pakistan Navy's presence in the south and its comprehensive strategy allowed the armed forces in the north and northeast to achieve their objectives, the official added. “Not only did the Pakistan Navy restrict the Indian Navy to its own waters, but it also ensured the safety of Pakistan’s maritime trade routes and coastal regions.” The Indian Navy admitted that it didn’t participate in the “Operation Sindoor” which their military had launched. Director General of Naval Operations Vice Admiral AN Pramod said that the Indian Navy was prepared but kept waiting for the instructions from the government. However, a Pakistan Navy official said that the uninterrupted operation of Pakistan’s three ports — Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port — throughout the hostilities stands as clear evidence of our effective strategy. “The Indian Navy faced humiliation as it had been confined to its territorial waters by a much smaller adversary throughout the tension,” he added. “The credit goes to the leadership, officers, and sailors of the Pakistan Navy who successfully safeguarded Pakistan’s maritime frontiers and denied the enemy any opportunity for aggression.” Pakistan-India ceasefire Pakistan and India agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire on Saturday following days of intense military exchanges that raised fears of a full-scale conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. The announcement was first made by US President Donald Trump and later confirmed by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The ceasefire came after missile strikes, drone incursions, and retaliatory operations across the border. Tensions flared after a deadly April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), that left 26 civilians dead. India blamed Pakistan-based elements without providing evidence; Islamabad strongly rejected the claim. India responded by closing the Wagah border, revoking Pakistani visas, and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty—moves Pakistan labelled as an “act of war.” By May 6–7, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, downing five Indian jets, including Rafales, and intercepted 77 Israeli-origin Harop drones. The US played a central role in facilitating backchannel diplomacy. Secretary Rubio and Vice President JD Vance held talks with senior leaders from both countries, including PMs Shehbaz Sharif and Narendra Modi, as well as top defence and intelligence officials. Following Trump’s announcement, both countries suspended military activity across land, air, and sea, though allegations of ceasefire breach were also reported from both sides of the Line of Control.

SC to take up Zahir Jaffer's appeal tomorrow

The Supreme Court is set to hear the appeal against Zahir Jaffer's death sentence in the Noor Mukadam murder case on May 13, according to a cause list that emerged on Sunday. Noor, 27, was found murdered at a residence in Islamabad's upscale Sector F-7/4 on July 20, 2021. A first information report (FIR) was registered later the same day against Zahir Jaffer, who was arrested from the site of the murder. In February 2022, a district and sessions judge convicted Jaffer of murdering Mukadam, sentencing him to death along with 25 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs200,000. His household staff, Iftikhar and Jameel - co-accused in the case - were each sentenced to 10 years in prison, while all other suspects, including Jaffer's parents and TherapyWorks employees, were acquitted. According to the cause list available on the Supreme Court of Pakistan's website, "the hearing on the appeal against Jaffer's death sentence will be held on May 13." Justice Hashim Kakar will head a three-member bench, comprising Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, that will hear the case.
