Govt to end collection of electricity duty via bills

Energy Minister Awais Leghari has written letters to all chief ministers regarding the decision to discontinue the collection of Electricity Duty through electricity bills starting from July 1, 2025. In his letters, the federal minister sought the support of all chief ministers in removing the complexities arising from multiple charges, taxes, and duties being collected through consumer bills. He stated that high electricity tariffs are already a significant challenge, and the additional burden of various levies further complicates the billing structure, making it difficult for consumers to understand and manage their electricity costs. The minister also highlighted the federal government's efforts to reduce power tariffs, including renegotiating Independent Power Producer (IPP) contracts, lowering the Return on Equity (ROE) for government-owned power plants, and implementing other structural reforms. Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has written letters to all provincial Chief Ministers about decision to discontinue collection of Electricity Duty through electricity bills from next month@MoWP15 #News #RadioPakistan https://t.co/3s1v58B88O — Radio Pakistan (@RadioPakistan) June 30, 2025 "In parallel, we are also committed to simplifying electricity bills so that they primarily reflect the actual cost of power consumption, rather than serving as a collection mechanism for various additional charges," he added. Leghari wrote that, to achieve this objective, the Power Division is considering the removal of non-electricity-related charges from consumer bills. “As part of this initiative, the Power Division has decided to discontinue the collection of electricity duty through electricity bills starting from July 2025. We request provincial governments to explore alternative mechanisms for collecting provincial levies and duties, rather than relying on electricity bills as a collection channel,” he stated. He expressed confidence that this move will not only make electricity bills more transparent and easier to comprehend, but ensure that consumers only pay for the cost of electricity, rather than a mix of other charges. Energy minister also sought the cooperation of all chief ministers in identifying and implementing alternative revenue collection methods, which will be instrumental in making this initiative a success.

Power division seeks uniform tariff

It was submitted in the petition that subsidy and inter-Discos rate rationalization be included in the proposed tariff. The initiative is taken to fix uniform rates across the country. The uniform tariff is proposed to be fixed from July 1. According to NEPRA, the hearing will consider the federal government's request.

Suicide bomber shot dead as CTD foils terrorist attack in Peshawar

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) has foiled a major terror plot, killing a suicide bomber and his handler during an intelligence-based operation in the Shamshatoo area of Peshawar. According to CTD officials, the operation was carried out on a tip-off, preventing what could have been a significant attack on a sensitive installation in the province. “A suicide bomber and his handler were killed during the raid. Both belonged to the banned terrorist outfit Fitna Al-Khawarij,” a CTD spokesperson said. “They were planning a high-impact attack on a critical target.” The CTD confirmed that the suicide attacker had entered Pakistan from Afghanistan. Weapons, a suicide vest, a submachine gun (SMG), a pistol, and explosive material were recovered from the site. The slain suicide bomber was identified as Munir Ahmed Gul. The CTD said the terrorists opened fire during the raid, but no casualties were reported among security personnel. “This successful intelligence operation has thwarted a major terrorist attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” the CTD added in a statement. The department said it remains vigilant against cross-border threats and militant elements trying to destabilise the province. Investigations are underway to determine if the group had any local facilitators.

Iran's military chief thanks Pakistan for support during war with Israel

Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir received a call from Iran’s top military commander on Sunday, with Tehran thanking Islamabad for its support during the 12-day war with Israel, Iranian Press TV media reported. During the conversation, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, praised Islamabad’s “courageous stance” during the crisis and thanked the people of Pakistan for their “bold positions” in condemning what he called unprovoked attacks by the Zionist regime. He credited Islamabad for standing by Tehran as Israeli strikes targeted senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians—including women and children—starting June 13. Gen Mousavi claimed that the US administration under President Donald Trump “spared no effort in assisting the Zionist regime” by attacking Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow—sites operating under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. “Alongside the US,” he added, “several Western countries also provided verbal and practical support to the enemy.” Read More: '71 killed by Israeli strikes on Iran's Evin Prison' Despite suffering losses, including the martyrdom of senior commanders early in the conflict, Iran asserted that it successfully prevented its adversaries from achieving their objectives, forcing them to request a ceasefire. According to military analysts cited by Iranian authorities, Israel unilaterally halted its strikes on June 23 under significant pressure. COAS Munir told his counterpart that Pakistan valued its enduring ties with Iran and underscored the importance of regional stability. Both officers agreed to maintain communication channels to promote peace and counter external threats. The Iranian commander’s remarks came in the wake of a 12-day conflict that began on June 13, when Israel launched a series of targeted strikes on Iran, killing senior military leaders, including the chief of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, and striking several nuclear installations. Iran responded with retaliatory attacks on Israeli positions. On June 22, the US attacked Iran, claiming to have destroyed Iran’s key nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. In response, Tehran launched strikes on American bases in Iraq and Qatar. The hostilities ended with a ceasefire announced on June 24, following mounting international pressure and heavy losses on both sides.

Monsoon rains, flash floods claim 45 lives across Pakistan

Heavy rain and flash flooding across Pakistan have killed 45 people in just a few days since the start of the monsoon season, disaster management officials said Sunday. The highest toll was recorded in the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) that borders Afghanistan, where 10 children were among 21 killed.  The disaster management authority said 14 of those victims died in the Swat Valley, where media reported a flash flood swept away families on a riverbank. In Punjab, along the frontier with India, 13 fatalities have been recorded since Wednesday. Eight of them were children who died when walls or roofs collapsed during heavy rain, while the adults were killed in flash floods. Also Read: DC Swat removed, four officials suspended At least 11 other deaths related to the monsoon downpours were recorded in Sindh and Balochistan provinces. The national meteorological service warned that the risk of heavy rain and possible flash floods will remain high until Saturday. Last month, at least 32 people were killed in severe storms in the country, which experienced several extreme weather events in the spring, including strong hailstorms. Pakistan is one of the world's most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change, and its 240 million residents are facing extreme weather events with increasing frequency. Meanwhile, the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), a wing of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has issued multiple weather alerts as widespread rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms are expected across the country from June 29 to July 5. نیشنل ایمرجنسیز آپریشن سینٹر کے مطابق 29 جون سے 5 جولائی تک ملک بھر میں شدید مون سون بارشوں اور ممکنہ سیلاب کا خطرہ۔ کشمیر گلگت بلتستان، اسلام آباد، پوٹھوہار: ایبٹ آباد، مانسہرہ، ہری پور، بالاکوٹ، مری، گلیات میں موسلادھار بارش، لینڈ سلائیڈنگ اور ندی نالوں میں طغیانی کا خدشہ pic.twitter.com/d8ApdzqOSs — NDMA PAKISTAN (@ndmapk) June 29, 2025 The NEOC warned of urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides in several regions, including Islamabad, Kashmir, northeast Punjab, the Potohar region, and upper and central Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Low-lying areas in cities such as Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad may be particularly vulnerable between 9pm and 4am on June 29. Flash flooding and landslides are also possible in the Hazara and Malakand divisions, as well as in the Jhelum and Poonch valleys. The Swat and Kabul rivers may experience medium to low-level flooding, while glacial streams in Chitral and Hunza pose additional risks. In southern Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Badin, heavy rainfall is expected from July 2, increasing the threat of urban flooding. Provincial and district authorities have been advised to stay on high alert and ensure that precautionary measures and public warnings are effectively communicated.

Two arrested for human trafficking, visa fraud

The FIA (Multan Zone) has arrested two individuals involved in human trafficking and visa fraud as part of its ongoing crackdown on illegal migration networks. The arrests were made during major operations in different parts of the city. According to an FIA spokesperson, the arrested suspects have been identified as Muhammad Muzammil and Sher Khan. Both individuals were allegedly running scams by promising overseas employment to citizens in exchange for large sums of money. Preliminary probe revealed that Muhammad Muzammil tricked a citizen into paying Rs 852,000 by offering a fake job opportunity in Saudi Arabia. Similarly, Sher Khan allegedly defrauded another individual of Rs2 million with a false promise of employment in the UK. Despite taking significant amounts from their victims, the suspects failed to deliver on their promises and later went into hiding. The FIA successfully traced and arrested them from different localities in Multan. Migrant smuggling has grown more frequent and dangerous in the last few years, with the trend impacting the country's reputation. The government, under pressure to act to stop the illegal exodus, had on February 17 passed the "Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (Amendment) Bill, 2025," aimed at amending the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2018 and the "Prevention of Smuggling of Migrants (Amendment) Bill, 2025," which amends the Prevention of Smuggling of Migrants Act, 2018, from the National Assembly.

President, PM condemn North Waziristan attack, vow to defeat terrorism

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday strongly condemned the suicide attack on security forces in North Waziristan, terming it a cowardly act sponsored by external forces aiming to destabilise the country. In their separate statements, the president and the prime minister paid tribute to the 13 soldiers martyred during the operation and praised the security forces for eliminating 14 terrorists in the ensuing exchange of fire while offering prayers for the elevation of the ranks of the martyrs and expressed sympathies with the bereaved families. Both leaders also wished a swift recovery for the three civilians – including two children and a woman – who were injured in the attack. Prime Minister Sharif, in his statement, said the nation saluted the martyred personnel and stood united in its resolve to eliminate terrorism in all its forms. He reiterated that such cowardly acts would not shake Pakistan’s commitment to peace and security. The coordinated attack occurred early Saturday morning in Dandi Dir Dawani village of Mir Ali tehsil, where a suicide bomber targeted a military convoy. Following the blast, a sanitisation operation was launched in the area. In a separate statement, the ISPR said 14 terrorists were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire. The operation was still ongoing to clear the area of any remaining threats, it added. A relatively lesser-known militant outfit, Aswadul Harb, claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the suicide bomber as a man named Abdullah. The group is reportedly linked to the Hafiz Gul Bahadur network, a faction aligned with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), believed to be operating from safe havens in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost province. Pakistan welcomes UN decision to remove references in child conflict report

Pakistan on Friday welcomed a decision by the United Nations secretary general to remove references to the country in the annual report on Children and Armed Conflict, calling it a recognition of Islamabad’s efforts to protect child rights. In a statement issued by the Foreign Office on Friday, Pakistan termed the development a “significant outcome” and a testament to its “constructive, sustained, and intensive engagement” with the United Nations, particularly the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (SRSG-CAAC). The UN’s Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) agenda monitors six grave violations against children in conflict zones: killing and maiming, recruitment and use of children, sexual violence, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access. While noting progress, the UN secretary general expressed concern over reports of grave violations, including attacks on schools—particularly girls’ schools—health workers, and incidents along the Afghan border. However, he added that, given Pakistan’s cooperation and preventive measures adopted under the agreement, the country would not be listed in the next annual report. “In view of the level of grave violations in Pakistan and the preventive measures adopted as agreed by the Government in June 2025 in cooperation with the United Nations to protect children, the situation of Pakistan will be removed from my next report,” the secretary general noted. The report, prepared following consultations and in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2427 (2018), covers the period from January to December 2024. It outlines trends in the impact of armed conflict on children and includes a list of parties involved in violations such as recruitment and use, killing and maiming, sexual violence, abductions, and attacks on schools and hospitals. The UN verified 41,370 grave violations, including 36,221 that occurred in 2024 and 5,149 from previous years that were verified during the reporting period. At least 22,495 children were affected. Among the most widespread violations were the killing and maiming of children, with 4,676 children killed and 7,291 injured. Other grave violations included 7,906 incidents of denied humanitarian access, 7,402 cases of child recruitment and use, and 4,573 abductions. Read More: Israeli soldiers ordered to shoot at unarmed aid seekers in Gaza: report The report also noted that 3,018 children were detained in 2024, often for alleged or actual ties to armed groups — including those sanctioned by the UN Security Council — or on national security grounds, raising serious concerns about violations of their rights. The highest numbers of violations were recorded in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (8,554), followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (4,043), Somalia (2,568), Nigeria (2,436), and Haiti (2,269). The largest percentage increases occurred in Lebanon (545%), Mozambique (525%), Haiti (490%), Ethiopia (235%), and Ukraine (105%). Sexual violence against children rose by 35%, including a sharp increase in cases of gang rape. The report described sexual violence as being used deliberately as a tactic of war — to terrorize populations, assert control over territory, displace communities, or target children based on ethnicity or gender. The denial of humanitarian access also reached unprecedented levels in 2024. The report said more humanitarian workers, including UN staff, were killed last year than ever before. Aid convoys and personnel were attacked, humanitarian workers were arbitrarily detained, and numerous bureaucratic and administrative barriers were imposed, severely disrupting operations. These actions left countless children without access to healthcare, education, protection services, or life-saving humanitarian aid, the report said. The report has urged all parties to uphold their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian and human rights law, and to respect the rights and special protections granted to children.

Arbitration court vindicates Pakistan's IWT stance

The Court of Arbitration constituted in accordance with the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960, ruled on Friday that India’s decision of holding the treaty in abeyance did not deprive it of its competence to adjudicate Pakistan’s complaints against its neighbour. The court issued the “Supplemental Award” on the proceedings instituted by Pakistan against India. “Consistent with this interpretation of the Treaty, the Court has previously found that once a proceeding before a court of arbitration is properly initiated, as in the present case, there must be a strong presumption against the incidental loss of jurisdiction over the matters placed before it by subsequent acts, such as the appointment of a neutral expert. Accordingly, the text of the Treaty, read in light of its object and purpose, does not to allow either party, acting unilaterally, to hold in abeyance or suspend an ongoing dispute settlement process,” the order read. The Supplemental Award said that “the text… does not provide for the unilateral “abeyance” or “suspension” of the Treaty. Rather, the Treaty provides for its continuation in force until terminated by mutual consent by India and Pakistan”. “Such text definitively indicates an intent by the drafters not to allow for unilateral action to alter the rights, obligations, and procedures established by the Treaty, including the treaty’s dispute settlement procedures. Additionally, the object and purpose of the Treaty, as expressed in its Preamble, includes establishing procedures for the resolution of all such questions as may hereafter arise in regard to the interpretation or application of the provisions agreed upon in the Treaty,” it said. The order added, “To that end, the Treaty’s procedures, inter alia, call for the establishment of a court of arbitration at the request of one of the parties, and provide that such court of arbitration, after receiving written and oral submissions, is empowered to render an award or awards that “shall be final and binding upon the Parties with respect to that dispute.” “It is difficult to see how this object and purpose of the Treaty—compulsory dispute resolution for definitive resolution of disputes arising between the Parties—could possibly be achieved if it were open to either Party, acting unilaterally, to suspend an ongoing dispute settlement process. Such an interpretation would fundamentally undermine “the value and efficacy of the Treaty’s compulsory third-party dispute settlement process”. Through a request for arbitration on August 19, 2016, Pakistan initiated the arbitration proceedings against India, seeking to resolve certain issues concerning the design or operation of run-of-river hydro-electric plants on the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers and their tributaries. The plants included the Kishenganga Hydro-Electric Plant and the Ratle Hydro-Electric Plant. After the filing of Pakistan’s request for arbitration, India requested for the appointment of a neutral expert to resolve certain design and operation questions concerning the two projects. On October 13, 2022, the World Bank, which had brokered the IWT 65 years ago, appointed Michel Lino as a neutral expert pursuant to Article IX and Annexure F to the treaty. In April 2025, after the Pahalgam attack, India said it was holding the IWT in abeyance as a punitive measure against Pakistan. "The Court of Arbitration unanimously finds: A) India’s position that it is holding the Treaty in “abeyance”, however, that position may be characterized as a matter of international law, does not deprive the Court of Arbitration of competence," the ruling said. "B) finds that the Court of Arbitration has a continuing responsibility to advance its proceedings in a timely, efficient, and fair manner without regard to India’s position on “abeyance”, and that a failure to do so would be inconsistent with its obligations under the Treaty," it added. “C) DETERMINES that the above findings apply, mutatis mutandis, with respect to any competence that the Neutral Expert otherwise possesses. D) RESERVES for further consideration and directions all issues not decided in this Award.” The Court of Arbitration is led by Prof Sean D Murphy and included Prof Wouter Buytaert, Prof Jeffrey P Minear, Judge Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh and Dr Donald Blackmore. It said that according to IWT, technical questions could be placed before a neutral expert or an arbitral panel. Pakistan, meanwhile, welcomed the Supplemental Award, noting that the Court affirmed its competence in the light of recent developments and that India’s unilateral action could not deprive either the Court or the neutral expert to adjudicate the issues before them. “Pakistan looks forward to receiving the Court’s Award on the First Phase on the Merits in due course following the hearing that was held in Peace Palace in The Hague in July 2024,” said an official handout issued after the ruling was published on the court’s website. “The high priority, at this point, is that India and Pakistan find a way back to a meaningful dialogue, including on the application of the Indus Waters Treaty,” it said. It referred Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks this week that Pakistan was “ready to engage in a meaningful dialogue with India”.

K-P budget decision unanimous, says Shibli

Opposition Leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz on Thursday said the PTI political committee had unanimously decided to present the Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa budget and that they would consult PTI Patron-in-Chief Imran after meeting him. Any suggestions from Imran would be approved by a two-thirds majority, he added. Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail alongside K-P government Finance Adviser Muzammil Aslam, Faraz alleged that there was a conspiracy to prevent the presentation of the K-P budget in order to create a constitutional crisis. He said before tabling the budget, the PTI founder had instructed him, Muzammil Aslam, Omar Ayub, Taimur Jhagra and Ali Amin Gandapur to consult with one another. "We made several attempts to meet the PTI founder, but permission was not granted," Faraz said. "Therefore, the budget was presented in line with the political committee's decision." He dismissed talk of "minus one" or "minus two," saying that people still firmly stood with the PTI founder. Passing the budget had defeated the conspiracy, he noted. He further stated that the budget is provisional and that changes can be made at the PTI founder's direction.

Shehbaz, Rubio agree to deepen Pak-US ties in phone call

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday agreed to strengthen bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States, with a particular emphasis on boosting trade and economic cooperation. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Secretary Rubio placed a telephone call to the prime minister during which both sides held a “warm and cordial” exchange of views on regional and bilateral matters. During the conversation, the prime minister appreciated what he described as President Donald Trump’s “bold and decisive leadership” in facilitating a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. He also expressed gratitude for Washington’s role in helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India. Read More: Pakistan, US to finalise trade deal next week The leaders also discussed the evolving situation in the Middle East, with PM Shehbaz reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive role in advancing peace and stability in the region. In response, Secretary Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts and expressed the US government’s willingness to continue close coordination. The exchange came as both countries move to revive economic ties amid shifting geopolitical alignments. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance said Pakistan and the United States had resolved to conclude trade talks next week following a meeting between Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The negotiations, focusing on reciprocal tariffs, are part of broader efforts by Islamabad to avoid steep US duties on Pakistani exports and to reset relations with Washington on a more commercially grounded footing. Separately, both countries this week co-hosted a webinar aimed at promoting investment in Pakistan’s minerals sector, with particular emphasis on the multibillion-dollar Reko Diq copper-gold project. Senior officials from both governments, along with private US investors, discussed regulatory reforms and public-private partnerships. The US Export-Import Bank is currently reviewing financing proposals worth between $500 million and $1 billion for possible investment in the Reko Diq project.

US tightens visa rules for Pakistanis

Pakistani applicants for the F, M, or J categories of non-immigrant visas were advised by the United States consulates in Karachi and Lahore on Thursday to make their social media accounts public for vetting, according to a report. The instructions followed similar advice issued by the US Embassy in New Delhi earlier this week. The move came after President Donald Trump’s administration ordered the resumption of student visa appointments, accompanied by significantly stricter social media vetting of applicants. “Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J non-immigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to ‘public’ to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States,” the consulates said in an Instagram post. https://ift.tt/KomnB2i The post stated that since 2019, the US has required visa applicants to provide social media identifiers on immigrant and non-immigrant visa application forms. It added that applicants must fill out social media identifiers and account handles for each platform on the application form. F and M are different student visa types, while the J visa is a non-immigrant visa for individuals approved to participate in exchange visitor programmes in the US. “Omitting social media information on your application could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future US visas,” the consulate warned.

SCO refuses to toe India’s line

Defence ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) were unable to adopt a joint statement at their meeting in Qingdao, China, after India reportedly refused to sign the document, claiming it was pro-Pakistan for not referencing the April attack on Indian tourists. The SCO is a 10-member Eurasian security and political bloc comprising China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran and several Central Asian states. The defence ministers’ meeting was held ahead of the annual leaders’ summit scheduled for later this year. Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif led Pakistan’s delegation at the meeting, where he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to regional stability, collective security and counterterrorism cooperation. In his address, the minister condemned Israel’s recent military actions against Iran and the continuing violence in Gaza while calling for peaceful resolutions to long-standing global disputes, including Kashmir and Palestine. Read More: SCO brings Pakistan, India defence ministers together Underscoring the SCO’s importance as a platform for dialogue, mutual trust and regional cooperation, Mr Asif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the SCO Charter, describing them as essential to promoting global peace, good neighbourly relations and multilateral collaboration. He further condemned the recent terrorist attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK), urging the international community to hold accountable those who finance and support such acts. He also referred to the Jaffar Express bombing in Balochistan as another example of cross-border terrorism undermining regional peace. Highlighting unresolved conflicts as serious threats to global stability, Mr Asif stressed the need for peaceful resolution of issues like Kashmir and Palestine through diplomacy, mediation and sustained dialogue. However, the meeting reportedly faced a setback when India declined to endorse the final statement, arguing it favoured Pakistan’s stance. The Indian delegation objected to the omission of any reference to the April 22 attack on Hindu pilgrims in IIOJK, in which 26 people were killed. India blamed Pakistan for the incident, a charge Islamabad firmly rejected. The attack led to some of the most intense cross-border exchanges in years, after India claimed to have targeted “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan denied the accusation, stating that the sites targeted were civilian in nature and had no links to terrorism. Also Read: Rajnath to attend SCO summit in China Citing anonymous sources, the Foreign News Agency reported that Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh believed the draft communiqué “diluted India’s position on critical issues such as terrorism and regional security.” Singh reportedly said the joint statement “suited Pakistan’s narrative” because it omitted the April attack but included mention of terrorist activity in Balochistan — a region where Pakistan has long accused India of supporting separatist elements, allegations that New Delhi denies. "Certain members, member countries, could not reach consensus on certain issues and hence the document could not be finalised on our side," Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters at a weekly media briefing. "India wanted concerns on terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country and therefore the statement was not adopted," he said, without naming the country. The Qingdao meeting marked the first time senior ministers from India and Pakistan shared a stage since their military standoff in May.

Justice Mansoor turns away K-P chief minister

Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah on Wednesday turned away Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, who sought the court's intervention for a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in Adiala Jail, telling him that he was knocking at the "wrong door". Gandapur appeared in the court of Justice Shah along with senior PTI leader Advocate Latif Khosa and the K-P advocate general. Khosa requested the court to immediately hear the request for a meeting with the founder PTI because of the ongoing budget session of the provincial assembly. Gandapur said that the budget approval process was ongoing in the K-P assembly. He emphasised that the party chief's vision was important in the budget. He complained that despite his repeated requests, the meeting between the PTI founder and the provincial budget committee had not been arranged. On that, Justice Shah remarked that Chief Justice Yahya Afridi or the Supreme Court Registrar should approached. He further stated that Chief Justice Afridi was the chairman of the Practice and Procedure Committee, therefore, approaching would save time. "You have knocked on the wrong door," Justice Shah said. "We cannot do anything on the judicial side, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi is in Lahore, so it is better to approach the registrar or the chief justice," Justice Shah told the K-P chief minister.

Another luxury vehicle recovered in Rs50m maid theft case

Police investigating the high-profile case of a domestic worker accused of stealing over Rs50 million from her employer recovered another luxury vehicle on Wednesday, bringing the total value of assets traced so far to over Rs10 million. According to Saeed Theem of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Clifton, the latest recovery — a car worth an estimated Rs2.5 to 3 million — was made on the basis of information provided by the suspect’s son, who is in police custody. The accused, Shehnaz, had been employed for 14 years at a residence in Khayaban-e-Tanzeem, Defence Housing Authority, where she allegedly stole cash, jewellery, and other valuables in small increments without raising suspicion. She was taken into custody earlier this week following a complaint filed by her employer, Anusha Jaleel. During a search of her residence, police recovered Rs600,000 in cash, while two of her bank accounts held deposits totalling Rs3.5 million. Investigators also identified a flat in the Gizri area registered in Shehnaz’s name, along with three cars and a motorcycle, all allegedly purchased using stolen funds. Read More: Maid who allegedly stole Rs50m over 14 years arrested The lifestyle funded through these illicit earnings included high-end shopping, luxury vehicles, and branded clothing, according to police. Officials stated that steps have been initiated to seize the assets acquired. Meanwhile, Shehnaz was presented before a judicial magistrate on Wednesday along with her son, Asif, and another suspect, Hammad. The court remanded all three into police custody for further interrogation. Investigators told the court that the accused operated as part of an organised group, and that Shehnaz had gifted a car to her friend Naseema and a motorcycle to her husband, Mohsin — both of whom are currently absconding. From Shehnaz, police have recovered a vehicle and over Rs3.4 million in cash. Another vehicle and Rs200,000 were recovered from Asif, while Hammad was found in possession of a motorcycle. Authorities believe additional vehicles and assets are yet to be recovered. The case, registered at Clifton Police Station, remains under investigation. The court has directed police to submit a progress report by June 28.

Roads, bridges, and communication networks may also suffer disruptions, particularly in remote areas. Authorities have urged residents, tourists, and trekkers to avoid glacier-adjacent zones and riverbanks in the identified locations during this high-risk period. “Stay informed through official alerts and cooperate with local authorities on any evacuation orders,” the agency advised. The NDMA also encouraged the public to report unusual water flows, glacier movement, or rumbling sounds to local disaster management authorities immediately. Ex-education CEO handed over to police

Duty Judge Waqar Ahmad Sidhu on Saturday granted a two-day physical remand of former chief executive officer of the Rawalpindi District Education Authority Amanullah Cheena and clerk Arshad Mehmood in a corruption case involving Rs36.58 million. Both were presented in court following their arrest by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE). The court rejected the ACE investigation team's request for a seven-day remand and ordered the suspects to be presented again on June 25 after completion of initial interrogation. According to the FIR, the accused caused financial loss to the national exchequer through alleged corruption in procurement of furniture, stationery, and IT equipment. Orders were issued to two companies—M/s Malik Traders and M/s Kamran Enterprises—who were paid in full, but under-supplied the contracted goods. Details in the FIR alleged that Rs2.5 million was paid for stationery, Rs2.88 million for furniture, and Rs2.68 million were paid for IT equipment. The anti-corruption prosecutor claimed Rs1.74 million worth of furniture and Rs1.91 million worth of IT items were not delivered. Defence lawyers opposed the remand, stating that the supplies were being delivered in phases and no corruption had occurred. They termed the case politically motivated, claiming that Amanullah Cheena, a Grade-19 officer, was arrested even before the FIR was registered—18 hours after his detention. They argued that instead of physical remand, the accused should be sent to jail on judicial remand, asserting their full cooperation with the investigation. Meanwhile, the investigation has expanded to include eight other education officials and two presidents of the All Pakistan Clerks Association (APCA), who have been issued summons with a warning of arrest in case of non-compliance. Those summoned include Deputy Education Officers Muhammad Nabeel Naqvi, Dr Gul Ahmed, and Habibullah; Senior Headmasters Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Sajjad; Admin Officer Muhammad Irfan; Administrator of Government Hudaibiya Education Complex; Legal Officer Kamran Saeed; and APCA Presidents Raja Aftab and Irshad Ahmed. The issuance of a large number of summons has reportedly caused unrest within the education department, prompting many officials to seek political backing. According to the ACE team, all summoned officials have refused to testify against Amanullah Cheena or become approvers.

Sindh partners with filmmaker for Edhi biopic

The Sindh government has announced that it will produce a feature film on the life and work of Abdul Sattar Edhi, the late philanthropist and founder of the Edhi Foundation. The announcement was made by Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon during a film festival held in Karachi. He underscored the importance of cinema as a medium for shaping public narratives, stating that while India has effectively used films to project its national narrative globally, Pakistan has yet to fully tap into this potential. “There are countless historical and social stories in Pakistan that, if brought to the screen, could not only highlight our cultural richness but also acquaint younger generations with national heroes,” Memon said. He stressed the need to tell the stories of those who have made significant contributions in various fields, calling it a timely and necessary endeavour. The information department, he added, is collaborating with veteran filmmaker Satish Anand to produce the film on Edhi’s life, though further details about the project are yet to be shared. Read More: Abdul Sattar Edhi – our own Abou Ben Adhem Abdul Sattar Edhi, widely revered as “the father of the poor” and “the angel of mercy,” dedicated his life to humanitarian service. Born in Gujarat in 1928, Edhi migrated to Pakistan in 1947. In 1951, he opened his first clinic, marking the beginning of what would become the country’s largest and most respected charitable network. Nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize, Edhi and his team built a vast network of welfare services: maternity homes, orphanages, shelters, morgues, homes for the elderly, and rehabilitation centres for the mentally and physically challenged — all aimed at helping the most vulnerable. His wife, Bilquis Edhi, a nurse by profession, continues to oversee women’s shelters and the adoption of orphans. The Edhi Foundation has facilitated the adoption of around 25,000 children. Also Read: ‘Because the ambulance is more Muslim than you’ Today, the Foundation runs blood banks, mobile clinics, ophthalmology and diabetes centres, surgical units, a cancer hospital, and shelters for abused women and displaced persons. Before his death in 2016, Edhi had launched the 50-kilometre Edhi project, focused on emergency aid for road accident victims across Pakistan’s highways. PM warns against negligence after thousands miss Hajj pilgrimage

In the wake of serious administrative lapses that prevented more than 67,000 prospective pilgrims from performing Hajj this year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Ministry of Religious Affairs to immediately begin planning and logistical preparations for Hajj 2026. Chairing a high-level review meeting in Islamabad on Saturday, the prime minister said such negligence would not be tolerated in the future, and instructed the ministry to develop a comprehensive roadmap aligned with the Hajj policy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “Serving the Hajj pilgrims is a sacred responsibility. Any negligence in this regard next year will be unacceptable,” the prime minister was quoted as saying during the meeting. Read More: 'Private Hajj quota' lost due to negligence In 2025, Saudi Arabia had allocated a total quota of 179,210 pilgrims to Pakistan, traditionally split evenly between the government and private Hajj operators. However, delays and mismanagement in meeting procedural requirements led to the underutilisation of the quota—particularly in the private sector. As a result, the private sector’s share dropped from the allocated 89,801 slots to just 25,698, leaving over 67,000 pilgrims unable to travel. The lapse prompted the prime minister to form a three-member inquiry committee in April to investigate the failure to comply with the Kingdom’s Hajj policy. To prevent a repeat of this year’s debacle, the prime minister directed that early and detailed arrangements be made, including immediate coordination with Saudi authorities. He also instructed the regularisation of the private Hajj scheme to ensure better oversight and compliance. He also ordered the presentation of a plan of action soon after the period of Hajj for the upcoming year is determined. The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Sardar Muhammad Yousaf and Musadik Malik, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and other relevant departments. A formal plan of action is expected to be submitted soon.

Senate session turns critical over budget

The federal budget for fiscal year 2025-26 came under fire in the Senate on Friday, with lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches denouncing it. Issues affecting minority communities in Sindh and the ongoing situation in Balochistan also featured prominently in the session. The house, chaired by Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan Nasir, briefly witnessed a boycott by opposition members due to the absence of any minister. Debate on the budget resumed after the arrival of Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Chaudhry. Senator Dinesh Kumar highlighted the alleged kidnapping of three girls and a boy from the minority community in Sindh. "It is being heard that these girls were being forcibly converted," he told the house, urging the Sindh police chief to take immediate notice of the incident. Responding, the deputy chairman directed the Sindh chief secretary and inspector general of police to submit a report and further instructed that the officers meet Senator Kumar to address his concerns. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Waqar Mehdi informed the house that "the girls had been recovered" and would be presented before the relevant court in Karachi. He assured that "there would be no discrimination against minorities". Maulana Attaur Rehman endorsed Senator Kumar's concerns and called for accountability from the Sindh government. Senator Raja Nasir Abbas added: "There is no compulsion in religion and kidnapping of girls is wrong." Senator Khalil Tahir Sindhu pointed out that the budget contained no allocations for minorities or interfaith harmony. The deputy chairman responded by advising him to take up the matter within his own party, since he belonged to the ruling coalition. Senator Khaleda Ateeb raised the issue of a tragic dumper accident in Karachi that claimed the lives of a woman and her daughter. "Why is the dumper mafia so strong in Karachi?" she asked. Senator Mehdi replied that the provincial government was making efforts to enforce traffic laws. Senator Jan Muhammad Buledi urged the government to play a greater role in efforts to stop the Iran-Israel conflict. He warned that "Israel wanted to change the government in Iran and bring its puppets there". He also criticised the budget for ignoring Balochistan, saying: "Balochistan cannot be ignored. We should have had a plan to fix the situation in Balochistan. Take Balochistan seriously." In response, Law Minister Tarar reiterated that Balochistan was a high priority for the government and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

27 injured as track fault derails two trains

At least 27 passengers were injured when two trains — Awam Express and Musa Pak Express — encountered a track fault while running between Khanewal and Mian Channu. According to commuters, most of the injured suffered wounds to their arms and fingers. Rescue 1122 teams provided immediate first aid to the victims upon their arrival at the Khanewal Station. While the precise cause of the incident remains undetermined, passengers reported that those seated near the doors and windows were most affected by the impact. According to sources, some unidentified individuals had allegedly attempted to steal a signal ladder installed along the railway track. Though they failed to detach it completely, the ladder was left misaligned, believed to be the likely cause of the mishap. Pakistan Railways has since launched a formal inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause and assess any security lapses. Pakistan Railways recorded a total of 45 train-related incidents in the first six months of 2025, deepening concerns over the persistent safety and infrastructure challenges across the national railway network.

India failed both militarily and diplomatically against Pakistan: Bilawal

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari asserted that after suffering a humiliating defeat on the battlefield, India also failed in its diplomatic campaign against Pakistan abroad, while Islamabad’s narrative prevailed on the international stage. Bilawal led a delegation to United States and Europe, appointed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to present Islamabad’s perspective on the recent conflict with India. The visit aimed to secure international support, especially from the European Union, to help prevent further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. “میں اس دورے کے دوران پاکستان کا امن کا پیغام، کشمیر کا پیغام، سندھو کا پیغام اور دہشتگردی کے متعلق ہمارا موقف اقوام متحدہ، امریکہ، برطانیہ اور یورپی یونین کے سامنے لے کر گیا۔ بھارت کوشش کر رہا تھا کہ وہ جنگ کے میدان میں تو ہم سے جیت نہیں سکا تو بیانیہ کی جنگ اور سفارتی سطح پر… pic.twitter.com/CwWus38nB8 — PPP (@MediaCellPPP) June 20, 2025 Speaking after returning from the successful tour in Karachi following a warm welcome on Friday, Bilawal emphasised the delegation’s efforts in conveying Pakistan’s message on peace, Kashmir, the Indus Waters Treaty, and counter-terrorism during visits to New York, Washington DC, London, and Brussels. He noted that during the conflict with India, although the former was “seven times larger”, Pakistan’s armed forces achieved a “humiliating defeat” for their adversary — a feat he said filled the country with pride. PPP chairman said Islamabad had overcome India’s efforts to undermine it at the diplomatic level, adding that the country won the diplomatic battle through tireless efforts. "India tried to succeed where it failed on the battlefield — by defeating Pakistan on the narrative and diplomatic fronts — but I want to tell you that even on that front, Pakistan emerged victorious and India failed." Read More: 'No military solution to Pak-India disputes' He asserted that Pakistan stood on the side of truth, while India relied on falsehood — a contrast that, he said, was evident in the international media, where Pakistan’s narrative gained traction and India’s failed to resonate. Recalling the last month’s skirmish with neighboring country, he said that Pakistan’s armed forces had shot down six Indian jets — a denial initially issued by India, but later conceded a month later. Highlighting that Kashmir has remained Pakistan’s most important issue since partition, he stressed that Pakistan raised its voice for Kashmir everywhere. “Before the war, India’s stance was that Kashmir was a bilateral matter. Now they must recognise that it is no longer an internal issue but an international one.” پاکستان پیپلزپارٹی کے چیئرمین بلاول بھٹو زرداری امریکہ، برطانیہ اور یورپی یونین کے کامیاب سفارتی دورہ کے بعد وطن واپسی کے موقع پر استقبال کیلئے آئے شرکاء کے پرجوش نعروں کا خیرمقدم کررہے ہیں۔@BBhuttoZardari #ProudOfBilawal pic.twitter.com/aRDNbowES1 — PPP (@MediaCellPPP) June 20, 2025 He also referred to US President Donald Trump’s comments, saying the US was prepared to facilitate talks between Pakistan and India to resolve the Kashmir dispute — a “historic success,” he said. Turning to Pakistan’s water security, he warned that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s threat to restrict the flow of the River Indus — described as an unprecedented move — would not go unchallenged. “When it comes to the Indus, the PPP will lead the charge, whether domestically or internationally,” he said. “بھارت کو سندھ طاس معاہدے کو ماننا پڑے گا، جس کے تحت چھ میں سے تین دریا پاکستان کے ہیں اور باقی بھارت کے حوالے ہیں، بھارت کے پاس دو آپشنز ہیں یا تو وہ عالمی قوانین کو تسلیم کرتے ہوئے سندھ طاس معاہدے پر عمل کرے اور اگر وہ ایسا نہیں کرتا تو پاکستان ایک اور جنگ کرئے گا اور پھر یہ چھ… pic.twitter.com/ngVxhoJZzN — PPP (@MediaCellPPP) June 20, 2025 He issued a stern warning to India: “You have two options: either abide by international law and the Indus Waters Treaty, which allocates three rivers to Pakistan and three to India, or face another war — and all six rivers will be ours.” Bilawal also questioned why domestic political actors, whom he blamed for inciting hate and division, were silent in the face of India’s water threat, insisting that these politicians had long been funded by India and accused them of raising sectarian slogans in Balochistan and Sindh. “The people of Sindh will never forgive these political orphans for their silence today,” he added, referring to their apparent inaction over the river threats and water security concerns.

Senators urge relief for people

Senators on Wednesday termed the federal budget for fiscal year 2025-26 a critical step towards economic stabilisation, national resilience, public relief, and called for further measures to support low-income groups, promote clean energy, and address regional disparities. While participating in the general discussion on Budget 2025-26, Senator Shahzaib Durrani lauded the federal budget for fiscal year 2025-26, termed it as a reflection of the government's commitment to stabilizing the economy, providing relief to citizens, and strengthening the nation's independence. Senator Danesh Kumar expressed concern over Pakistan's growing debt burden, added that 50 percent of the national budget is being consumed by interest payments, primarily to service existing loans through further borrowing. "The IMF loans are not grants; we are borrowing to repay previous loans, which is not a sustainable solution," he added. Senator Pervaiz Rashid termed the federal budget for fiscal year 2025-26 balanced and pragmatic, adding that the budget offered relief to the common man and was well-received by financial markets. Senator Palwasha Muhammad Zia Khan, emphasized the need to retain the Roosevelt Hotel as a national asset, urged the government to protect it from privatization. Expressing dissatisfaction over the 10 per cent increase in government employees' salaries and a seven per cent rise in pensions, she termed the increment insufficient in the face of ongoing economic hardships and called for a review of the decision to provide greater relief to the public sector workforce and retirees. She said that unchecked tree-cutting is contributing to rising temperatures and environmental degradation. Senator Palwasha also opposed the imposition of an 18 percent tax on solar panels, stating that such measures could hinder Pakistan's transition to clean energy. "The country is moving swiftly towards solar energy, and this taxation will discourage that shift," she added.

Senate panel proposes tax exemption for annual income up to Rs1.2m

Senate's Standing Committee on Finance has recommended exempting income tax for individuals earning up to Rs1.2 million per year. In addition, it approved a proposal to increase the limit for property purchases by non-filers from 130 per cent to 500 per cent of their declared assets. The committee met under the chairmanship of Senator Saleem Mandviwala on Wednesday and conducted a section-wise review of the Finance Bill 2025. During the meeting, FBR officials informed the committee that a new section has been introduced in the Finance Bill to bring e-commerce businesses and recreational clubs into the tax net. FBR officials stated that under the new budget, a tax will be levied on the income of online academies and teachers, some of whom are earning up to Rs30 million annually. The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue,Chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, has entered its sixth consecutive session to review and deliberate on the Income Tax provisions of National Budget for FY 2025–26.@Financegovpk pic.twitter.com/c8Hui73nCb — ꜱᴇɴᴀᴛᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴘᴀᴋɪꜱᴛᴀɴ 🇵🇰 (@SenatePakistan) June 18, 2025 FBR Chairman Rashid Langrial informed the committee that individuals with an annual income of Rs1.2 million would be liable to pay Rs12,500 in annual taxes. He also said the surcharge on income above Rs10 million has been reduced from 10 to 9 per cent. Langrial further stated that recreational clubs, including the Islamabad Club, would be taxed under the proposed bill. This proposal was opposed by Committee Chairman Mandviwala, who argued against taxing clubs. However, the FBR chairman contended that these clubs are exclusive to a privileged few and do not serve the general public. FBR officials also proposed restrictions on non-filers, including limits on property and vehicle purchases. Initially, a 130 per cent limit on property purchases was proposed, but Senator Mohsin Aziz suggested increasing it, arguing that a non-filer with Rs10 million in declared assets should be allowed to buy property worth Rs50 million. After deliberation, the committee approved raising the property purchase limit for non-filers from 130 per cent to 500 per cent. Senator Shibli Faraz maintained that no tax should be imposed on salaries up to Rs1.2 million, arguing that a Rs100,000 monthly income equates to just Rs42,000 in today's economic conditions. The committee rejected the imposition of tax on individuals earning up to Rs1.2 million annually and on small online businesses. Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kiyani said taxes would apply when income exceeds expenses and emphasised that this measure targets the privileged class. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb added that penalties for non-filers were increased last year and that efforts are ongoing to bring non-filers into the tax net. A new section, 17C, has been added to the Finance Bill 2025, under which online marketplaces engaged in e-commerce will be taxed. Individuals providing services through the internet and electronic networks—such as music, audio and video streaming platforms, cloud services, online software, telemedicine, and e-learning—will also be subject to taxation. Additionally, online banking, architectural design, research and consultancy, digital accounting, and other digital services will be taxed. However, the committee rejected a proposal to tax small online businesses.

LHC seeks legal status of May 9 plotters

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought details by June 19 regarding the legal status of those PTI leaders who participated in a meeting where the party's founding chairman, Imran Khan, allegedly instructed party members to target military installations in the event of his arrest. In the meantime, the division bench, headed by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, also directed the prosecution to conclude arguments on the bail pleas filed by Imran Khan in multiple cases registered against him in connection with the May 9 riots. The court asked for a list of all meeting participants to determine who had secured bail or who had been arrested. At the start of proceedings, a list containing the names of witnesses of the May 9 incidents, who had recorded their statements, was submitted before the court. The court was apprised of all details about the cases in which those witness statements had been recorded. The law officer informed the court that this was not a routine case and that different methods had been used to collect evidence. He maintained that, under the law, it is not necessary for a person inciting violence to be directly involved in acts of arson. Anyone inciting the public to violence would face the same consequences as those committing arson or disrupting law and order, he added. The law officer further argued that any person whose instructions lead the public to gather and cause disruption or destruction would be held equally responsible.

Karachi fourth worst city in global livability index 2025

Karachi has been ranked as the fourth least liveable city in the world, according to the Livability Index 2025 released on Tuesday by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a research arm of The Economist Group. Placed 170th out of 173 cities assessed globally, Karachi was the only Pakistani city included in the index. It ranked just above Dhaka (Bangladesh), Tripoli (Libya), and Damascus (Syria), which retained the bottom position. The EIU’s liveability index evaluates cities across five categories — stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure — using more than 30 indicators to arrive at the final scores. Copenhagen was named the most liveable city in the world, earning near-perfect scores in stability, education, and infrastructure, with an overall score of 98 out of 100. Read more: Karachi ranks among least liveable cities in global survey once again It replaced last year’s leader, Vienna, which dropped to second place due to two foiled terrorist attacks that impacted its stability score. Zurich tied with Vienna in second place, while Geneva rounded out the top five, underlining the dominance of Western European cities in the index. Melbourne, with a score of 97, was the only non-European city to break into the top five, ranking fourth. Other Southern Hemisphere cities featured prominently in the top ten, including Sydney (6th), Osaka (7th), Auckland (8th), and Adelaide (9th). Vancouver (10th) was North America's only representative in the top tier. Several cities in the UK — including London, Manchester and Edinburgh — saw declines in their positions, attributed to widespread civil unrest and rising homelessness. London and New York were ranked 54th and 69th respectively, with congestion, crime and terrorism threats weighing down their scores. Canadian cities also dropped in the rankings, largely due to lower healthcare scores across the board. The report noted that the Middle East showed the most significant improvement, driven by enhancements in healthcare and education in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In South Asia, most cities ranked poorly, with the EIU citing high pollution levels, extreme temperatures, and regional tensions. Ongoing military confrontations along the Kashmir border contributed to lower stability scores for several Indian cities. Damascus remained at the bottom of the list. However, the EIU suggested the situation may improve in future editions, following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December and the subsequent easing of US sanctions. The report concluded that while inflationary pressures had somewhat eased, rising geopolitical tensions posed new risks to urban stability and overall quality of life across many regions.

DG ISPR lauds students' role in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry commended the significant role played by the nation, particularly students, in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos during the recent conflict with India, the military's media wing reported on Tuesday. The DG visited Karachi's Jinnah University for Women, where he interacted with students and highlighted how their involvement helped dismantle India’s strategic assumptions once and for all, according to the ISPR. "In Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, the nation, especially the students, played a crucial role in permanently destroying India's strategic assumptions," he said. He further reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to its territories, stating, "There is no doubt that Kashmir is the jugular vein of Pakistan. The people of Balochistan are bound to Pakistan through religion, culture, and traditions." The ISPR chief also assured that no external force, including a handful of militants from India, would be able to harm Pakistan's relationship with Balochistan. Upon arrival at the university, the administration and students warmly welcomed Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry and paid tribute to the success of Pakistan's armed forces in the operation against India. The students expressed their support for the military, stating, "We are with the Pakistan Army, and the army is with the people." Pakistan Armed Forces conducted Operation Bunyanum Marsoos on May 10 as part of the military conflict 'Marka-e-Haq' in response to Indian military’s dastardly attacks that began on the night of May 6 and 7, resulting in the loss of innocent civilian lives, including women, children, and the elderly. On May 10, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and deployed its Al-Fatah missile and targeted multiple Indian military installations. However, after the intervention of US President Donald Trump, a full and immediate ceasefire was reached between India and Pakistan.

Imran Khan postpones protest movement amid regional tensions

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has decided to postpone the party’s planned protest movement for two weeks, citing prevailing regional tensions and the evolving international situation amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. The announcement was made by PTI leader Noreen Khanum following her meeting with the incarcerated former prime minister at Adiala Jail on Tuesday, Express News reported. Speaking to reporters outside the prison, she said Khan had taken the decision keeping in view the “sensitive regional circumstances” and ongoing developments in the Middle East. “We are awaiting policy statements from the prime minister, president and field marshal before proceeding further,” Khanum stated. She added that although Khan had not met anyone over the past week, he remained aware of global affairs and believed the situation would have direct consequences for Pakistan. “The PTI founder has called for national unity during this critical time,” she said. Read More: Israel-Iran conflict enters fifth day with ongoing missile strikes Commenting on the federal budget, Khan reportedly described it as one tailored for the elite. “The burden of taxation is being placed entirely on the salaried class while the poor continue to suffer. Poverty is rising and the economic situation is worsening,” she quoted him as saying. Khanum further said that more than 3.3 million educated individuals had left Pakistan over the past three years, each taking an estimated $30,000 with them — contributing to a significant outflow of foreign exchange. Regarding the KhyberPakhtunkhwa (K-P) budget, she said it would be finalised only after consultations with key party figures. “Ali Amin Gandapur, Taimur Jhagra, Muzzammil Aslam and Shibli Faraz will meet Khan before the budget is passed,” she added. Speaking on the occasion, PTI leader Uzma Khan said Khan had urged the nation to focus on unity and remain steadfast while clarifying that Gandapur had not distanced himself from the protest movement, and that PTI supporters globally would continue to raise their voices. “Imran Khan has not withdrawn support for the protest — in fact, he laughed at the suggestion,” she said, adding that Khan’s position on the situation in Gaza was already well known. Uzma also criticised political leaders for remaining silent during periods of regional conflict. “Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz did not speak out during the India-Pakistan war. Now, the current rulers — with a mandate of just 17 seats — must clarify their position. That is their responsibility,” she said. “We are also waiting to hear from the real policymakers,” she added.
