The health authorities have made progress in polio virus surveillance, collecting sewage samples from nine districts. Of these, seven districts have tested positive for poliovirus type 1, including Gwadar, Quetta, South Waziristan, Rawalpindi, Larkana and Mirpurkhas. Samples from Pishin and Lahore, however, were declared polio-free. A total of 45 million children had been vaccinated during three national polio campaigns, with more than 400,000 polio workers — including 225,000 women — engaged in the effort.
