Opp MPs condemns attack on Iran

Opposition leaders on Saturday vehemently condemned the US-Israeli attack on Iran, warning that the strike could destabilise the entire region and endanger global peace. Addressing a joint press conference, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen Pakistan (TTAP) spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and other leaders of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen called on the government to adopt an immediate and unequivocal stance on the issue. Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said he had come to brief the nation on an extremely sensitive matter. He stated that an attack on Iran was not only an assault on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an independent state but also a threat to regional and global peace. He noted that such action during ongoing negotiations in Geneva constituted a blatant violation of diplomatic norms and international law. He warned that an attack by two nuclear powers on an Islamic country was deeply alarming. "If, God forbid, Iran suffers damage, Pakistan will not remain unaffected," he said, adding that the entire region could descend into severe instability. He stressed that no country had the right to violate Iran's land, sea or airspace and deplored civilian casualties and attacks on educational institutions as a humanitarian tragedy and contrary to international law and human values. Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said that Pakistan's sovereignty and the wider Muslim world faced potential threats in the evolving situation. He urged all Muslim countries to unite in condemning the action. He also warned of attempts to fuel sectarian divisions in the region, stressing that Shia and Sunni communities must remain united. According to him, the current circumstances demand political stability and national cohesion within Pakistan. He alleged that certain forces were attempting to create distance between the armed forces and the public and to entangle Pakistan in disputes with neighbouring countries, which could harm national interests. Former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar also condemned the attack, cautioning that its consequences would not be confined to Iran. He warned that any attempt at regime change in Iran would carry dangerous repercussions for the entire region and could trigger fresh tensions. Khokhar slammed the lack of national-level consultation on key foreign policy matters in Pakistan, stating that certain decisions were being taken without debate in parliament or public engagement. He demanded that the government bring major foreign policy issues before parliament and ensure decisions are taken in line with national interest. TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai said that despite the attack on Iran, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation had not convened an emergency meeting, even though urgent consultation was required.

Karachi airport becomes hub for diverted Gulf flights amid escalating Mideast conflict

As the Middle East teeters on the brink of a wider conflict, Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport witnessed extraordinary activity on Saturday, with dozens of foreign airline flights diverted to the city, creating scenes reminiscent of the 1990 Gulf Crisis. According to aviation sources, a large number of foreign carriers were rerouted to Karachi as regional airspace restrictions and security concerns forced precautionary diversions. Several aircraft were temporarily parked during the day, while many others landed for refuelling. The situation echoed 1990, when, following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, dozens of passenger aircraft landed in Karachi under similar circumstances. At that time, both the old airport terminal and the newly constructed Jinnah Terminal were used to accommodate diverted flights. In view of the extraordinary influx, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) issued a NOTAM highlighting limited aircraft parking space at the airport and directing airlines and cockpit crews to ensure prior coordination before operating into Karachi. A PAA spokesperson said Pakistan’s airspace remained fully operational and safe for all civil aviation activities despite regional restrictions. Overall, 27 flights were handled, including diversions, return flights, technical landings and rerouted operations. Read: Iran targets US bases in Gulf after American, Israeli strikes kill 201, injure 747 Karachi airport alone managed 13 diversions, including technical refuelling stops. In addition, four diversions were recorded in the Lahore Flight Information Region, while two return diversions were handled at Islamabad Airport. Three flights returned to their original or alternate destinations, while five rerouted flights transited through Karachi’s airspace without landing and were provided alternate routes. The sudden increase in traffic created operational challenges due to limited parking space, prompting airport authorities to caution airlines about possible delays. Officials confirmed that the situation was being closely monitored and managed. Meanwhile, several airlines announced cancellations on Gulf routes. AirSial cancelled 19 flights on various Gulf sectors, while PIA cancelled four flights from Islamabad to Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai. Saudi Airlines suspended its Saudi-bound flights from Peshawar. Aviation authorities said Pakistani air traffic controllers and operational teams effectively handled the surge in traffic amid the emergency. Passengers were advised to remain in contact with their respective airlines for the latest updates. Sources added that several daily flights operating between Karachi and Lahore also faced cancellations due to the evolving regional crisis.

On Thursday, the polls oversight authority issued a notification declaring Zehri the returned candidate from the constituency. However, on the same day, the IHC suspended the ECP's decision.

297 Taliban enemies killed, 89 posts destroyed in ongoing ‘Operation Ghazab Lil Haq’: govt

Prime Minister’s spokesperson Mosharraf Zaidi provided an update on the ongoing ‘Operation Ghazab Lil Haq’ on Friday night and said at least 297 Afghan Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) members and terrorists were killed so far as Pakistani forces continued their robust response to the unprovoked aggression by the neighbouring country's forces. Earlier on Friday, Pakistani forces targeted key military installations of the Afghan Taliban regime in Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia through effective airstrikes. The military spokesperson said the ongoing operation was producing the desired results, with insurgents effectively repulsed at 53 locations along the border, inflicting heavy losses while exercising restraint to avoid civilian harm. In a post on X late on Friday night, Zaidi provided the latest figures as of 11:10pm, saying Pakistan’s efforts to eliminate terrorism emanating from Afghanistan continued throughout the day. “A total of 297 Afghan Taliban, TTP, and other terrorists are confirmed killed, and more than 450 are reported injured,” he said, adding that 89 Afghan Taliban posts were destroyed and 18 captured. Zaidi further said 135 Afghan Taliban regime tanks and armed personnel carriers had been destroyed, while 29 locations across Afghanistan were subjected to aerial strikes. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar also provided the same update. Attacks continued against Pakistan, terrorist incidents kept occurring, in which Afghanistan’s role was entirely clear, and evidence exists,” he said. The minister said that when Pakistan was attacked under the cover of night, it was the country’s duty to respond. “Pakistan has carried out a measured and comprehensive counter-operation, which is still ongoing,” he said, noting that strikes were carried out against military and terrorist targets while ensuring Kabul’s Green Zone was not affected and no civilians were targeted. “From brigade headquarters to core headquarters and ammunition depots, their military installations were completely destroyed,” he said, adding that the situation remained ongoing and future developments would be closely monitored. Read: 'Clear as daylight': Tarar says Afghanistan's unprovoked attacks expose Taliban-terrorist nexus Tarar said Afghan forces attempted attacks and skirmishes in Khyber and northern areas such as Chitral, but failed due to lack of conventional warfare capability. “After Pakistan’s successful operation, a change in tone from Afghanistan is now evident,” he added. “It cannot happen that terrorists repeatedly carry out attacks in Pakistan, receive facilitation and shelter, get training, operate inside Pakistan, and then attack Pakistan’s borders; this cannot be allowed,” he said. Referring to drone attacks from Afghanistan that were successfully neutralised, Tarar said the timing and synchronisation of these incidents indicated a clear link between terrorists and the Afghan Taliban regime. “This is not an internal issue of Pakistan; it is an internal issue of Afghanistan. Media reports indicate that their Ministry of Defence has even fired at each other. In Pakistan, there is unity. Today, the K-P chief minister also issued a statement in support of the country’s defence and armed forces, which we welcome,” he added. He said the nexus with terrorists and cross-border terrorism was an international issue and emphasised that it was Afghanistan’s problem, which Pakistan was neutralising successfully while achieving significant results. The information minister was apparently referring to a statement on X by K-P CM Sohail Afridi, who said: "If any country engages in provocation or aggression against Pakistan, we will go to any extent to defend Pakistan without any fear or hesitation. "This is not just the responsibility of the K-P government but every Pakistani considers it their national duty. Despite criticisms of internal disagreements and flawed policies, we will stand with our country and security forces in the face of external conspiracies or aggression." He added that for establishing peace in Afghanistan and the tribal areas, it had become "imperative" to move forward by taking along three parties, as per what former premier Imran Khan told him. "First, the people of Pakistan's tribal areas; second, the Afghan government; and third, the people of Afghanistan — without the support of these three parties, no successful operation or lasting solution is possible." CM Afridi said that in light of Imran's directives, he had advised federal representatives to form a National Jirga that included representatives from the provincial and federal governments, tribal elders and elders from all political and religious parties. "This is the only path through which the issues can be resolved in the best possible manner. War should always be the last option. War increases problems; it does not reduce them." — Sohail Afridi (@SohailAfridiISF) February 27, 2026

NA panel grills officials over Hajj contracts

The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Religious Affairs on Thursday expressed concern over the allocation of funds for minorities and questioned the repeated awarding of Hajj-related contracts to a single company. The meeting, chaired by MNA Shagufta Jamani, reviewed multiple agenda items, including minority welfare funds and administrative matters related to Hajj operations. During the session, Dr Nelson Azeem raised concerns over the "reduction in funds" allocated for minorities, questioning how many temples or churches could be renovated with Rs10 million. The committee declared Rs85 million allocated for minorities insufficient and recommended increasing the amount to at least Rs500 million in the next budget. The Ministry of Religious Affairs secretary stated that although the ministry annually requests higher allocations for minority welfare, it receives limited funds. The committee decided to write to the prime minister, the cabinet and the finance ministry to seek an enhanced allocation for minority welfare programmes. Dr Azeem also pointed out "disparities" in academic marking, saying Muslim students receive 20 marks for memorisation (Hifz), while non-Muslim students do not benefit from a similar provision. He called for a "fair distribution of marks". The committee also questioned the awarding of Hajj-related contracts in Saudi Arabia to the same company for the fourth consecutive year. Shagufta asked why a company previously placed on a blacklist was repeatedly granted contracts, including for Hajj accommodations and demanded that the religious affairs minister explain the matter in the next meeting.

Significant targets, including ammunition depots, battalion headquarters, sector headquarters, tanks, artillery guns, and armored personnel carriers, have been destroyed during sustained retaliatory strikes. The operation has seen decisive action across sectors including Mohmand, Bajaur, Kurram, South Waziristan, and Nawapas, where Pakistani forces successfully thwarted infiltration attempts by Taliban and other militant elements. Several attempts by Taliban forces to attack Pakistani positions using quadcopters were also intercepted and neutralised.

Pakistan giving ‘effective’ response to fresh ‘unprovoked fire’ by Afghan Taliban

Security forces responded decisively to unprovoked aggression by the Afghan Taliban along the Pakistan-Afghan border, security sources said on Thursday. The forces targeted Taliban positions across multiple sectors, including Chitral, Bajaur, Tirah (Khyber), Mohmand, and Arandu (Chakwal), inflicting heavy casualties and destroying enemy outposts. According to security sources, Pakistani forces struck Taliban check posts in the Chitral sector with precision, completely neutralising the positions. In Bajaur, two Taliban outposts were destroyed. Officials said the hostile elements were forced to retreat in disarray following the counterstrikes. Security forces continued a strong retaliatory operation in the Garsal sector of Mohmand along the Pak-Afghan border, according to security sources. In the Garsal sector, Pakistani forces targeted and destroyed Taliban check posts, killing an additional three militants. Verified reports indicate that the total number of Afghan Taliban casualties has risen to around 30, security sources said. Officials confirmed that Pakistan’s security forces are fully prepared to defend the border and respond decisively to any act of aggression. The incident followed an attempted attack by Taliban-operated quadcopters on Pakistani security check posts, which was successfully thwarted, security sources added. Pakistani forces responded with coordinated artillery, small arms, and drone operations, targeting Taliban hideouts and eliminating threats. Security sources confirmed that the troops are fully prepared to defend the border and respond firmly to any form of aggression. Exclusive footage from the Kurram sector shows Frontier Corps personnel engaging Taliban positions with expert precision, neutralising insurgent threats along the border. Security sources added that the Taliban have been circulating false claims and fabricated videos on social media in an attempt to distort the events. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid has reportedly been circulating misleading reports, while verified updates from government sources are being shared in real time. Security sources noted that accounts linked to India’s R&AW have also attempted to amplify false narratives on social media in support of the Taliban. Authorities urged the public not to pay attention to any fake news. Pakistani security forces, they added, are responding effectively and timely to all hostile actions. Authorities affirmed that Pakistani forces remain vigilant and committed to protecting the border, emphasising that any aggression will be met with a robust and proportionate response. Security officials have urged the public to remain vigilant while assuring that the border remains secure under continuous surveillance and operational readiness. Pakistani soldiers stationed along the Pak-Afghan border reaffirmed their commitment to defending the homeland. He further stated that in the retaliatory operation, multiple Taliban hideouts were targeted and destroyed. “Our nation does not fear anyone,” the soldier said, adding, “If anyone provokes us at the behest of India, the consequences will be severe.” “Pakistan knows how to defend itself,” he concluded. The Ministry of Information also confirmed the development on X, saying the security forces gave “an immediate and effective response” to the “unprovoked action” by the Afghan Taliban along the Pak–Afghan border. “The Afghan Taliban miscalculated and opened unprovoked fire at multiple locations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, which is being met with an immediate and effective response by Pakistan’s security forces,” the ministry said in a post. Talal slams Taliban’s ‘gorilla mindset’ Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry accused the Afghan Taliban regime of initiating attacks in parts of K-P, saying Pakistan was giving a “befitting response” and would share further details as the situation unfolds. Speaking on a private news channel, Chaudhry described the Afghan Taliban regime as having a “gorilla mindset,” alleging that it had launched attacks in certain areas of the province. “What kind of state is this that makes 15, 16, 17-year-old children commit suicide, then celebrates it? They send children to suicide missions—do any states treat their children like this?” he said. He emphasised that no one would be allowed to attack Pakistan’s sovereignty or peace and asserted that the country would use all available means to defend itself. The minister said Pakistan had sought to resolve matters through dialogue in view of longstanding relations with the neighbouring country. However, since talks had not yielded results, he said, the issues were now being addressed through third parties. Commenting on the firing from light and heavy vehicles, he said it served to show the world who was behind the attacks. “They have done this before several times—they provide cover, and during that time they try to infiltrate small groups,” he added. Referring to previous claims by Afghan Taliban regime spokesmen about capturing Pakistani check posts, the minister dismissed them as false, saying the Taliban did not have the courage to do so. He warned that Pakistan would respond in a manner similar to how “an enemy in the East was taught a lesson for a long time,” adding that the Taliban would also be taught a lesson on the western border so that they would not attempt such actions again. The development comes a day after the Afghan Taliban regime initiated unprovoked firing, prompting security forces to respond immediately and halt the exchange along the international border. “The Afghan Taliban regime initiated unprovoked firing along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the Torkham and Tirah sub-sectors. Pakistan’s security forces responded immediately and effectively, silencing the Taliban aggression,” said Mosharraf Zaidi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s spokesperson for foreign media. Analysts view the recent incidents of terrorism originating from Afghanistan — including the attack on a Federal Constabulary convoy in Karak district few days ago, the burning of constabulary personnel, the martyrdom of DSP Asad Mehmood in Shakardara (Kohat), and the suicide attack in Bhakkar — as an open war by Afghanistan against the state of Pakistan. According to them, these suicide attacks during Ramazan reflect that these terrorists have no connection with Islam or Pashtun traditions. For them, innocent human lives hold no value in pursuit of their malicious and self-styled ideology, they added. Instead of responding to Pakistan's consistent demand to stop the patronage of "Fitna al-Khawarij", the Afghan Taliban regime's blatant aggression against Pakistan is equivalent to challenging Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Pakistan will respond to this declared war by the Afghan Taliban regime with full national resolve and unity. Pakistan's security forces, backed by complete public support, are determined and united in eliminating all elements that threaten national security. This is a developing story.

Jailed PTI leaders seek CJP's intervention

Five senior PTI leaders incarcerated in Lahore's Koth Lakhpat Jail have written an open letter, urging the chief justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi to again look into the matter of PTI founder Imran Khan's health and treatment and "see that justice is done". Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed and Omer Sarfraz Cheema made the appeal in a joint handwritten open letter, which was shared by their counsel Rana Mudassar on Wednesday. They also drew a comparison between the events surrounding the jailed ex-prime minister's treatment today and that of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif in 2019. Nawaz, who was serving a prison sentence granted by an accountability court that found him guilty of corruption in the Al Azizia case in 2019, had been allowed to travel to London for treatment after he was diagnosed with an immune system disorder. Prior to that, he was also provided treatment at the hospital in Pakistan. The five PTI leaders said in their letter that in 2019, "when Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Services Hospital, Lahore for low platelet count, we as the sitting government ensured that he should get proper treatment for his ailment". "His personal physician Dr Adnan was part of all meetings conducted by the medical board. We even personally asked Mian Nawaz Sharif whether he was satisfied with his treatment," the leaders said. They added that Nawaz was also asked whether he wanted to be treated by a physician of his choice and assured that the relevant doctor would be called. "His family and legal counsel had free access to him," the letter further stated. "We are sure that if you ask Mian Nawaz Sharif personally, he will not refute our claims," it added. The leaders recalled that Nawaz was also permitted to go to England for treatment. Comparing those events with the situation today, the five leaders said that Imran, a former premier, has "faced obstructions of all forms in his treatment". They accused the incumbent government of carrying out a "cloak and dagger activity", saying: "First, the present government did not accept that he was unwell and then when the news was leaked from Pims about his central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), the government blustered around with all sorts of obnoxious statements. His consultants' rights were trampled […] and his family was not granted access [to him]; his lawyer and personal physicians could not meet him." The jailed leaders said that Imran was taken to the hospital for the administration of a second injection on Tuesday, "but his family was not informed." Only PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan "received a message at 2am that he had been given his second injection".

Imran can be admitted to hospital on court orders: Sanaullah

Prime Minister's Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday said Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan could be moved to a hospital if directed by a court, amid the party's demands regarding his health and calls for his transfer to Islamabad's Shifa International Hospital. Imran has been in custody since August 2023, serving a sentence at Adiala Jail in a £190 million corruption case. He also faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with protests on May 9, 2023. Read More: Khosa raises concern over Imran health The PTI has intensified calls for his release after a medical report submitted to the court stated that vision in his right eye had dropped to 15 per cent. Government officials, however, maintain that he is receiving appropriate medical care. Speaking in an interview on programme 'Capital Talk' on a private news outlet, Sanaullah said the PTI founder was in judicial custody and not under executive or any other form of detention. He added that in line with instructions of the apex court, a team of specialist doctors had examined Imran and observed that hospitalisation was not necessary. Read: Aleema criticises PTI leadership over silence on Imran's health “If a court now issues orders or doctors recommend hospitalisation, he will be admitted to any hospital where treatment is available,” Sanaullah said. Referring to restrictions on meetings between the jailed PTI founder and party leaders, he said the curbs were imposed after alleged violations of jail rules by the PTI leadership and Imran’s family. “Rumours regarding his health began circulating after the restrictions were put in place,” he said, adding that to address concerns, a meeting was arranged between Imran and his sister at the jail. Sanaullah emphasised that the satisfaction of the family or the party did not affect the legal process. “The law does not consider these things; it only obliges the government to ensure that if a person is in judicial or executive custody and falls ill, the highest standard of medical treatment is provided. This has been strictly followed in this case,” he said. According to Sanaullah, five senior eye specialists examined Imran twice and recommended treatment, which was being provided. “All medical reports are available. If any additional relief is sought, the Supreme Court will have to be approached,” he added. Also Read: Khosa raises concern over Imran health Speaking on the same programme, PTI parliamentary leader Shahid Khatak said the family did not trust the doctors currently treating Imran. “We have three demands: that a personal doctor be present, that an eye specialist examine him, and that two or three family members be allowed to meet him,” he said. “At least one of his sisters should be permitted to see him.” Khatak said the eye was a sensitive organ and that the necessary instruments for treatment were available at Shifa International Hospital. “He should be shifted there in the presence of doctors and family members, and the family should be informed of any treatment or procedure carried out,” he added. Expressing concern over Imran’s health, Khatak asked who would be held responsible in the event of any serious medical complication. “His health is a top priority and should not be viewed as a political issue,” he said, adding that the concerns of Imran’s sisters were understandable given that they did not have access to his doctors. Imran was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Scicnes for follow up eye-treatment i.e. second dose of anti VEGF intra vitreal injection in the wee hours of Tuesday. Prior to the procedure, he was examined by a board of specialists, which included consultant cardiologist who also performed echocardiography and ECG. Read More: Medical board reports improvement in Imran Khan’s eye condition Last week, a medical board that examined him reported an improvement in his eyesight and did not recommend transferring him to a hospital. According to his medical report, his vision in his right eye has improved from 6/36 to 6/9, while his left eye retains 6/6 vision with the use of glasses. The assessment was conducted by Dr Nadeem Qureshi and Dr Arif, following a detailed examination at Adiala jail. According to the medical report, the anterior segment of both eyes was normal and the cornea was clear. It noted mild intragel haemorrhage at the edge of the right eye and moderate retinal haemorrhage in all four quadrants. Swelling in the macula of the right eye was subsiding, with macular thickness reduced from 550 to 350 microns. The board outlined ongoing medication and treatment and recommended OCT angiography and fundus fluorescein angiography after completion of anti-VEGF therapy, the report added, while no recommendation was made for Imran’s transfer to a hospital.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar called on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh on Tuesday to discuss moving a no-confidence motion against the 'imposed mayor' of Karachi, as well as the alleged incompetence and corruption of the Pakistan Peoples Party-led (PPP) Sindh government. The JI delegation, including Karachi Deputy Ameer and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Council opposition leader Saifuddin Advocate, met Sheikh at his residence to seek the PTI's support for the no-confidence motion against Mayor Murtaza Wahab. During the meeting, both sides reached a principled consensus on the need to remove the mayor through a no-confidence move. Sheikh, on behalf of his party, assured full cooperation to the JI on the issue and agreed that a comprehensive strategy would soon be formulated to ensure its success. Other PTI leaders present at the meeting included senior vice president of Sindh, Raja Azhar; Karachi president, Fahim Khan; general secretary, Arsalan Khalid; parliamentary leader in KMC, Mubashir Hafiz-ul-Haq; and vice chairman, Jinnah Town, Hamid Nawaz Khan. Read More: No-confidence move against Karachi mayor gains momentum The participants strongly condemned the arrest of political workers and the registration of terrorism cases against activists of JI and PTI in Karachi. They said such actions had further increased public resentment against the PPP-led Sindh government, adding that political struggle could not be suppressed through coercive tactics for long. The meeting also discussed widespread corruption in the Sindh government, KMC and other institutions in Karachi, as well as the city's worsening civic conditions. The leaders claimed that corruption had become the only functioning system across Sindh and Karachi. They further stated that incidents, including the Gul Plaza tragedy and recurring fire outbreaks, had exposed the incompetence of the provincial government. According to the leaders, citizens in Karachi continued to face acute shortages of water, power outages and poor road conditions. Long-delayed development projects remained incomplete, worsening public hardships. Traffic congestion, accidents involving dumpers, rising crime and fatalities caused by falls into open manholes and drains have become routine occurrences in the city. They said that the PPP and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan were attempting to divert public attention through political manoeuvering, but, said, the public was no longer willing to be misled.

PTI claims 9m pushedinto poverty in Punjab

PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has alleged that nine million additional people have been pushed into poverty in Punjab, while the government spent Rs11 billion on a luxury aircraft. He warned that the country's economic freefall would continue until the public mandate is restored. In a hard-hitting statement, Sheikh Waqas claimed that a glaring and suspicious black hole existed in the government's data timeline. He noted that the official survey deliberately skipped the critical 2022 and 2024 period, jumping from 2019 straight to 2025 and clubbing six years of data together in a calculated attempt to conceal the economic devastation unleashed during the first PDM tenure. The PTI leader asserted that the omission was deliberate, stressing that the government concealed the 2022-2023 figures because their transparent release would have shown that under the Imran Khan-led PTI government, the economy remained stable and achieved growth of around 6% despite the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that this hard-earned progress was systematically dismantled by the current rulers after toppling the PTI's well-performing government through "a regime change conspiracy". He strongly slammed the government, accusing it of orchestrating a planned humanitarian disaster through incompetence, ineptness, shortsightedness and self-serving royal behavior, which, he said, had pushed millions of Pakistani families into hunger and despair amid backbreaking inflation and a sharp erosion of public purchasing power. Sheikh Waqas stated that the economic devastation was reflected in the government's own recently released poverty survey. "The figures released by the Ministry of Planning are not just statistics; they are a charge sheet against the PDM-2 regime," stated Sheikh Waqas. "In just a few years, this government has reversed a hard-won economic progress during Imran Khan-led PTI government." He pointed out that the national poverty rate had surged from 21.9% in 2018-19 to 28.8% in 2024-25.

PM arrives in Doha amid regional tensions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on Tuesday (today) with a wide-ranging agenda that includes the latest escalation in tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Gaza peace plan, US-Iran standoff and other pressing regional developments. This marks the third visit of the prime minister to Qatar in the last five months, underlining the growing strategic importance of ties between Islamabad and Doha. The prime minister had travelled to Doha twice in September - first to express solidarity with Qatar following Israeli strikes, and later to attend the Arab-Islamic summit hosted in the Qatari capital. The latest trip comes against the backdrop of a series of significant regional developments, particularly on Pakistan's western border. Prime Minister Shehbaz arrived in Doha on Monday for a two-day official visit at the invitation of the Amir. He was received at Hamad International Airport by Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi. Pakistan's Ambassador to Qatar, Muhammad Aamer, and senior diplomatic officials were also present to welcome the visiting delegation. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is accompanying the prime minister, along with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi. According to the Foreign Office, the visit reflects the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the two countries and underscores their shared commitment to strengthening multifaceted cooperation. During his stay, the prime minister will hold a bilateral meeting with the Amir covering the entire spectrum of relations, including political engagement, economic collaboration, energy partnership and people-to-people exchanges. However, officials said regional security issues would dominate the discussions. The prime minister's visit comes just days after Pakistan carried out cross-border strikes inside Afghanistan, targeting terrorist hideouts responsible for a string of deadly attacks on Pakistani soil. The strikes followed a series of suicide bombings, further straining already fragile ties between Islamabad and Kabul. Sources said the prime minister will brief the Qatari leadership about the latest situation, particularly Pakistan's concerns regarding the use of Afghan territory by militant groups to launch attacks across the border. Islamabad has long maintained that banned outfits have found sanctuaries inside Afghanistan. Qatar has previously played a quiet but significant mediatory role between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Doha had facilitated backchannel contacts and helped broker a ceasefire at a critical juncture. However, a comprehensive agreement addressing Pakistan's longstanding security concerns remained elusive. Diplomatic sources believe Islamabad is keen to once again leverage Qatar's good offices, given its close ties with various stakeholders in Afghanistan and its established role as a regional mediator. The other key issue likely to figure prominently in the talks is the Gaza peace plan and proposals for an international stabilisation force. Pakistan and Qatar are part of an eight-nation Muslim bloc that backed former US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace initiative and joined the "Board of Peace", a platform aimed at coordinating diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and post-conflict reconstruction. With the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepening and ceasefire efforts facing hurdles, both Islamabad and Doha are expected to exchange views on the next phase of diplomatic engagement and broader Muslim world coordination. The brewing tensions between Iran and the United States are also expected to come under discussion. Qatar and Pakistan, along with other regional countries, have been engaged in quiet diplomacy to dissuade Washington from launching strikes against Tehran amid rising hostilities. Officials said both countries view any escalation involving Iran as deeply destabilising for the wider region, particularly the Gulf, where millions of Pakistani expatriates live and work. Maintaining regional stability remains a shared priority for Islamabad and Doha. Beyond regional politics, the two sides are expected to explore new avenues of cooperation in trade, investment, energy and infrastructure development. The Foreign Office said the visit would provide an opportunity for both leaderships to exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest, reaffirming their resolve to work closely for peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

PHF announces structural overhaul to revive 'national game'

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced the formation of an Ad hoc Governance and Management Committee as a structural shift aimed at modernising administration and lifting the standards of hockey across the country. In a significant move focused on technical excellence, legendary Olympians Hassan Sardar and former World Cup winning captain Islahuddin will co-chair the Professional Development Committee. Their mandate includes overseeing national team selection, introducing specialised training protocols, and establishing rigorous benchmarks for coaches and players, according to the PHF. The long-term management selection will be made by the Professional Advisory Committee, also co-chaired by Islahuddin and Sardar. Additional members of this committee will be appointed in consultation with the two former Olympians. To ensure specialised oversight, the PHF has separated corporate governance, marketing and resource mobilisation from technical hockey operations, the federation said in a statement. The newly appointed members of the Governance Committee include Capt Farrukh Atique for HR and Finance; Shakeel Shah, for Departmental Coordination and Outreach; Amir Ibrahim for Corporate and Marketing Support; Ghulam Ali Mallah, for School and College Sports Promotion; and Brig (retd) Akmal Aziz for Services and Institutional Coordination. All members of the Governance Committee will serve on an honorary basis, contributing their expertise in a bid to revive and elevate Pakistan's hockey, the statement added. "This is an interim roadmap to correct the direction. There is no shortcut for success, but clear direction and seriousness of effort will be visible," a PHF spokesperson said.

Pakistan’s action in Afghanistan rooted in right to self-defence: President Zardari

President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday described Pakistan’s recent strikes in Afghanistan as an inherent right to defend its people against terrorism emanating from across its borders, while warning that if bloodshed continues inside Pakistan, those responsible will not remain beyond reach. The statement came after Pakistan carried out intelligence-based strikes on seven terrorist camps along the border with Afghanistan following a series of attacks and suicide bombings. In a statement issued by the presidency, Zardari said that Pakistan’s recent actions were rooted in its inherent right to defend its people against terrorism emanating from across its borders and followed repeated warnings that went unheeded. President Asif Ali Zardari says Pakistan’s recent actions reflect its right to defend its people against cross-border terrorism. Citing the latest UNSC report, he warns that those responsible for bloodshed inside Pakistan will not remain beyond reach. — The President of Pakistan (@PresOfPakistan) February 22, 2026 Referring to his statement from February 8, the president recalled that Pakistan had cautioned the international community that “when terrorist groups are allowed space, facilitation or impunity beyond national borders, the consequences are borne by innocent civilians all over the world.” He had also stated that Pakistan takes strong exception to the situation in Afghanistan where the Taliban regime has created conditions similar to or worse than pre-9/11. Calling the actions of Kabul’s de facto authorities a matter of deep concern, he said the regime, which is not recognised by the United Nations, had continued to permit terrorist elements to operate from Afghan soil in violation of its commitments under the Doha Accord, wherein it pledged that Afghan territory would not be used against any country. President Zardari noted that the most recent report of the United Nations Security Council Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team had reinforced Pakistan’s long-standing position. The report stated: “A wide range of Member States consistently report that ISIL-K, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaida, the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, also known as the Turkistan Islamic Party (ETIM/TIP), Jamaat Ansarullah, Ittihad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, and others are present in Afghanistan. Some groups have used or are continuing to use Afghanistan to plan and prepare external attacks.” He observed that this assessment by the United Nations made clear that the presence and activities of these organisations posed serious threats to neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, and said it was regrettable that despite clear warnings and repeated engagement, the Afghan authorities failed to take credible and verifiable action against these elements. Also Read: Lieutenant colonel, sepoy martyred, five terrorists killed in Bannu attack The president further said Pakistan exercised restraint for a considerable period and confined its response to terrorist hideouts located near the border areas. However, he warned that Pakistan is fully aware of where the planners, facilitators and patrons of violence are based. If bloodshed continues inside Pakistan, those responsible will not remain beyond reach, he maintained. The president reaffirmed that Pakistan seeks peace, stability and cooperative relations with all its neighbours. He said that peace cannot rest on denial, duplicity or inaction against terrorism. The protection of Pakistani lives remains paramount and non-negotiable, he added. Pakistan has long accused the Afghan Taliban of providing sanctuary to the TTP leaders and fighters, who regrouped across the border after Pakistan's military operations in the former tribal areas. While the Taliban have publicly denied giving the group a free hand, Islamabad insists that the TTP safe havens in Afghanistan remain intact. Tensions worsened last year after a string of deadly attacks in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, which Pakistan directly linked to militants operating from Afghanistan. In August last year, Afghan officials claimed that two drone strikes had hit the house of a man in Shinwar district, Nangarhar province. The Afghan government had summoned Pakistan’s Ambassador in Kabul to lodge a formal protest against what it had claimed were Pakistani military strikes in Nangarhar and Khost provinces. In November, the Afghan Taliban regime again accused Pakistan of launching air strikes. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said that Pakistan had "bombed" Afghanistan's Khost province and carried out air strikes in Kunar and Paktika. In response, Pakistan vehemently dismissed Kabul's allegations, insisting that Islamabad neither carried out covert cross-border operations nor targeted civilians. The same month, ISPR Director-General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry issued a warning that the Afghan regime was a threat not just to Pakistan but to the entire region and the world, citing the abandonment of $7.2 billion worth of American military equipment during the US withdrawal. Also Read: Terrorist commander, accomplice killed in exchange of fire with CTD Bannu Lt Gen Chaudhry reiterated that the Afghan regime was harbouring “Non-State Actors” who posed a threat to various countries in the region, noting the Taliban’s failure to establish an inclusive state and government post-2021. He stressed that Pakistan's issue was with the Afghan Taliban regime, not the Afghan people. Most recently, after terrorist attacks in Balochistan, Naqvi once again blamed India for a coordinated terror campaign in the province. “These were not ordinary terrorists. India is behind these attacks. I can tell you for certain that India planned these attacks along with these terrorists,” he said. He added that authorities would pursue every individual involved, as well as those directing them from behind the scenes. He further stated that India was the “main country” behind terrorism, saying it not only provides financial support to terrorists but also assists them in planning and strategising. In 2023, a UN report also revealed that the TTP had established a new base in K-P in mid-2023. The report shed light on close ties not only between the TTP and the Afghan Taliban but also with anti-Pakistani groups and al Qaeda. The report further revealed that some Taliban members had also joined the TTP, perceiving it as a religious obligation to provide support. Interlocutors reported that TTP members and their families received regular aid packages from the Taliban. Importantly, the UN report noted a significant increase in Afghan nationals in the TTP ranks. This supported Pakistan’s stance that a growing number of Afghan nationals were involved in suicide attacks in the country. More recently, a UNSC report said that attacks on Pakistan by the TTP from Afghanistan have increased, endorsing Islamabad's long-running complaints about militant sanctuaries across the border. The 37th report by the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team not only endorsed Islamabad's stance that Afghanistan had become a sanctuary for militants who used its territory to launch attacks on Pakistan, but also came at a time when the country is facing a renewed spate of violence.

The decision was taken at a high-level consultative meeting chaired by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, which brought together leading media houses, producers, directors, and prominent figures from the creative sector. Speaking at the meeting, Iqbal said the 150th anniversary celebrations of Quaid-e-Azam and Iqbal would go beyond formal ceremonies, serving instead as a milestone in national renewal and intellectual revival. Iqbal noted that the thoughts and vision of national heroes would be presented to the youth in an inspiring and accessible manner through drama and digital media. He expressed the government’s commitment that the anniversary celebrations would serve as a launchpad for national reconstruction and intellectual revival, ensuring that Pakistan’s ideological heritage is effectively highlighted on the global stage.

Mufti Muneeb announces Zakat al-Fitr, Fidya rates for Ramazan

Renowned religious scholar Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman announced the minimum amounts for Zakat al-Fitr (almsgiving), Fidya (compensation for missed fasting) and Kaffara (penalty) for fasting on Saturday. According to his statement, the minimum amount for Zakat al-Fitr and Fidya has been set at Rs300 per person, while those with financial means have been encouraged to pay according to their capacity. He said the minimum rates for Zakat al-Fitr and Fidya vary depending on the food item. For two kilogrammes of stone-ground wheat flour, the amount is Rs300; for 4kg of barley, it is Rs1,160; for 4kg of dates, Rs2,800; and for 4kg of premium raisins, Rs7,200. Read: Poverty rate hits 29%, highest in over a decade Regarding Kaffara, which is the expiation for deliberately breaking a fast, he explained that it requires feeding 60 needy people two meals each. The minimum cost for this ranges from Rs18,000 for wheat flour, Rs69,600 for barley and Rs168,000 for dates, while the amount for raisins varies depending on market prices and quality. He emphasised that these amounts represent minimum thresholds and were provided to guide those with greater financial means to give according to their capacity, citing the Quranic injunction: “And whoever voluntarily gives more — it is better for him.” He further clarified that Fidya is intended for chronic patients or extremely elderly individuals who are unable to fast and show no signs of recovery, while temporary patients or travellers who miss fasting due to illness or travel must make up their fasts later, as Fidya does not replace these missed fasts. He also said that if a person breaks a fast without a valid reason, Kaffara applies, which entails fasting for 60 consecutive days in addition to making up the missed fast, or paying financial Kaffara if fasting is not possible. He noted that market prices for the listed items fluctuate and quality variations may affect the exact amounts. What is Fidya? Fidya is a form of charity for Muslims who are unable to fast due to reasons such as illness, old age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or any other condition that permanently prevents them from fasting. Instead of making up for missed fasts, these individuals can pay Fidya to feed a poor person for each missed fast. The concept of Fidya is outlined in the Holy Quran. When to Pay Fidya Fidya can be paid in the form of food or money, depending on personal circumstances and available resources. It can be paid before or during Ramadan, but is preferably given before Eidul Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month. Fidya can be paid online through various Islamic charitable websites or offline via local mosques or Islamic organisations. Who Should Pay Fitrana? Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for all Muslims, whether or not they are required to pay regular zakat. If a person is liable for zakat or possesses wealth in excess of essential needs (such as home, clothing, and household goods) that equals or exceeds the Nisab threshold, they must pay Zakat al-Fitr. This applies regardless of whether the wealth is from trade goods or personal assets, and regardless of whether a full year has passed. Those who meet these criteria are required to fulfil this duty. When to Pay Fitrana Zakat al-Fitr is specifically tied to the morning of Eidul Fitr, starting at dawn, when Fajr prayer time begins. Ideally, Fitrana should be paid before the Eid prayer on the morning of Eid.

Imran to be taken to hospital on Feb 25 for 2nd eye injection: Tariq Fazal Chaudhry

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said on Friday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan would be transferred to a hospital on February 25 for medical treatment, clarifying that the hospitalisation would be limited solely to administering his second injection to treat his eye. Speaking to the media in Islamabad on Friday, Chaudhry said that Imran, 73, received his first injection on January 25, with two further injections still pending. “Regarding the matter of his eye, on January 25 he was given one injection, two more are still to be administered. For that, the proposed date for the injection is February 25, and one month later he will be given the third injection at the best available facility in Pindi and Islamabad,” he said. When asked if the former prime minister would be moved to the hospital for the injections, Chaudhry responded in the affirmative, adding that the injections could only be administered in a hospital equipped with tertiary care facilities. He emphasised that Imran’s hospitalisation would be limited to this purpose. Read More: Naqvi criticises 'politicisation' of Imran Khan’s health, accuses opposition of 'playing politics' The former premier has been incarcerated since August 2023 following convictions he and the PTI described as politically motivated. Since his ouster through a no-confidence vote in 2022, he has faced multiple legal cases, including those related to state gifts and an alleged unlawful marriage. Some convictions have been suspended or overturned, with appeals pending. The former prime minister denies any wrongdoing. Last month, reports emerged that PTI founder had developed an infection in his right eye, prompting the government to transfer him from Adiala jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for assessment. Initially denied by authorities, the treatment was later confirmed, with a PIMS hospital report stating that the former prime minister had reported reduced vision in his right eye. After thorough assessment, a diagnosis of right central retinal vein occlusion was made, and hospital-based follow-up treatment was recommended. PTI rejected the official reports, demanding a meeting with their leader and submitting a memo to the chief justice of Pakistan, seeking immediate access for Imran’s family and personal physicians. Amid growing concerns over the deterioration of Imran’s eyesight in custody, the Supreme Court took up the matter following a report submitted by the former prime minister’s lawyer, Salman Safdar. Acting as amicus curiae, Safdar reported that Imran had lost 85% of vision in his right eye and expressed dissatisfaction with the medical facilities available at Adiala Jail. The report noted that the former prime minister had requested urgent access to specialist doctors. Also Read: Imran 'extremely happy' after phone call with sons The Supreme Court ordered that Imran be given access to an eye specialist and allowed to communicate with his sons in the United Kingdom. The government maintained that there had been no negligence in the examination and treatment of Imran’s eye condition and affirmed that medical care would be provided as per official orders. Following these developments, a medical board examined former prime minister and reported improvement in his eyesight, recommending no hospital transfer. The PTI, however, rejected the board’s findings and reiterated demands for immediate treatment at Islamabad’s Shifa hospital under supervision of the former prime minister’s personal physicians.

Imran agreed to apologise over May 9 but withdrew, Rana Sanaullah claims

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Thursday strongly denied offering any kind of deal to former prime minister Imran Khan or his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claiming instead that the PTI founder had agreed in November 2024 to apologise for the May 9, 2023, riots but later withdrew. His remarks came a day after he said that attempts were made to find a solution, but Imran was not willing to accept “any deal”. “He is not ready for any deal,” Sanaullah had told a private news channel. “Two serious efforts were made, but not only did he refuse, but his demands were such that the current government could not fulfil them.” Read: Attaullah Tarar denies any government 'deal' with Imran Khan Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also earlier today dismissed media reports suggesting any “deal” between the government and the jailed PTI founder. Speaking in an interview on programme 'Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath' on a private news outlet, Sanaullah said his earlier statement had been taken out of context. He urged people to look at his full remarks, in which he had clearly stated that there would be no deal. “There has been no talk of any deal with Imran Khan from the government, nor will there be. The establishment has neither ever offered him a deal nor will it ever do so,” he said. When asked what Imran had agreed to during a second round of efforts, which involved individuals from abroad who met PTI, Sanaullah claimed that the former prime minister had agreed to apologise over the May 9 incidents but later stepped back. Read More: Vawda calls Imran deal offers ‘figment of Rana Sanaullah’s imagination’ “He had basically agreed to express regret or apologise for the May 9 events. The DG ISPR had also clearly stated a year ago that the first step in this matter should be a sincere expression of regret and apology over May 9, after which other matters could be considered,” he said, adding that he had no evidence to support the claim. Sanaullah clarified that no "give-and-take deal" was offered by either the government or the establishment. However, the PM's aide added that when the PTI laid siege to Islamabad in November 2024, a discussion took place at the time but no agreement was reached. Referring to the ongoing issue of prison meetings, Sanaullah said PTI’s second-tier leadership had been told that if such meetings were not used for anti-state narratives, below-the-belt criticism of institutions or press conferences outside jail, then there would be no issue in allowing them. He questioned whether agreeing to such terms could be termed a “deal”. Sanaullah said the government’s offer was clear and open, adding that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had invited all parties to come forward for a “Charter of Stability of Pakistan” so that all stakeholders could sit together to strengthen the country. He said Imran, due to his "stubbornness and rigidity", was not ready for dialogue. He also claimed that opposition leaders Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and Mehmood Khan Achakzai were not given any authority to negotiate. Also Read: Nov 2024 protest was a missed opportunity to secure Imran's release, Rana Sanaullah says “The claim that he has authorised Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Raja Nasir Abbas is meaningless. They have no authority. Imran is not ready for political dialogue or to sit with political parties; it is simply not his policy,” he added. Sanaullah said he had himself asked Achakzai to arrange a meeting with PM Shehbaz, but the opposition leader had declined, saying he would inform him after seeking “permission” from the PTI founder. He added that as leader of the house, the prime minister had no issue meeting Achakzai, stating that in a parliamentary democratic system, it was not possible for the house leader and the opposition leader to have no contact with each other.

Response sought on fuel price hike plea

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought responses from the federal government and other respondents on a miscellaneous petition challenging the recent increase in petroleum prices. Justice Khalid Ishaq heard the petition, which contended that inflation in Pakistan has already reached alarming levels, adversely affecting citizens and businesses, and that the latest hike in petrol and diesel prices has further burdened the public. The petitioner argued that petroleum prices are not aligned with international market rates and alleged that the government lacks a transparent mechanism for determining fuel prices.

Nov 2024 protest was a missed opportunity to secure Imran's release, Rana Sanaullah says

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah claimed on Wednesday that during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) November 2024 protest, party founder Imran Khan initially agreed to hold talks and not protest at D-Chowk but later withdrew, adding that it was a missed opportunity for his release. In November 2024, PTI supporters left Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for Islamabad, demanding the restoration of the party's electoral mandate, the release of detained party members and the reversal of the 26th Amendment. However, the protest in the federal capital was brought to an end after the government launched a major operation to prevent protesters from reaching D-Chowk, forcing the senior party leadership to “escape” the scene. In an interview on programme 'Capital Talk' on a private news outlet, Sanaullah revealed that the government, including Interior Minister Naqvi, had made an offer to Imran, proposing that the party hold its planned November 2024 sit-in at Sangjani instead of marching towards D-Chowk. "He (Imran Khan) was being given wise advice, and Mohsin Naqvi was directly engaged in talks with him, telling him not to come towards Islamabad or go to D-Chowk, but to sit in Sangjani and hold talks there. Initially, Imran Khan agreed to this, but after agreeing, he backed out and said that Bushra Bibi would decide. Then she made the decision that they would go to D-Chowk,” Sanaullah said. He explained that if Imran had agreed, he would have received concessions, adding that the decision led to a missed opportunity for his release. Asked about whether Imran had allegedly said that he did not want to come out, Sanaullah replied, “You may say so.” The PM's aide said that the PTI founder could have secured his release from Adiala jail had the party chosen a more peaceful course of action during their 2024 protest. Sanaullah noted that the PTI miscalculated the potential outcome of its street agitation, believing it would spark a revolution. “They thought the street movement would bring about a revolution,” he added. "Imran Khan wants to be released from jail; he does not wish to stay in jail for a single day," Sanaullah continued. "However, PTI and Imran Khan are misjudging the situation. They were under the illusion that their wheel-jam strike on February 8 would create a significant impact." The PM's aide also alleged that Imran was no longer making decisions for PTI independently. Instead, he claimed that Imran’s wife, Bushra Bibi, was exerting influence on the party’s decisions. “Imran was fully following his wife’s advice when he was prime minister, and he still listens to her today,” Sanaullah said. He dismissed claims that Imran had ever resisted his family’s influence on party decisions. In reference to the PTI's announcement earlier today of another street agitation after Eid, he said, “It is understood that Imran’s meeting will be halted during Ramazan following the announcement of launching the street movement." He further remarked that PTI leaders lacked the capability to initiate a successful street movement for Imran's release. He warned that they would be dealt with accordingly if they attempted to create chaos. Sanaullah said PTI's proposed movement after Eid was a "conspiracy" against Imran and the party, adding that the PTI founder had been living in good conditions in jail and receiving quality treatment. He also referenced PTI’s February 8 wheel-jam strike call, which he claimed had received a poor response. The PM’s aide also advised the PTI to engage in talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who had invited them for discussions on the country’s stability. “They can receive concessions if they take positive initiatives for the country’s development,” he said, adding that the street protests and sit-ins were only further complicating the situation. He criticised the PTI for complaining about Imran’s lack of meetings with his family and PTI leaders. "PTI itself was responsible for the situation due to their use of derogatory language following the meeting with Imran," Sanaullah bit out. "If these meetings were not used for abuse against the state and state institutions or for below-the-belt propaganda, then who was stopping them from having the meetings?” he asked.

4 suspected terrorists killed in Karachi's Shah Latif Town as CTD claims foiling terror bid

The Sindh Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on Tuesday said it killed four suspected terrorists belonging to the banned Fitna-al-Hindustan group in a successful raid at a house in Karachi's Shah Latif Town. A press release from the department said the raid took place during the night between Monday and Tuesday and resulted in the recovery of heavy weapons, explosives and other dangerous materials. "The raid was conducted based on information provided by detained suspects. However, the operation quickly escalated when the suspects opened fire on the police and launched a grenade attack, triggering an intense exchange of fire." Two policemen were injured, including Head Constable Muhammad Yousuf and Constable Muhammad Junaid. They were immediately transported to Agha Khan Hospital for medical treatment. "In the retaliatory fire, four terrorists were also injured. Despite being taken to the hospital, they later succumbed to their injuries," the CTD press release stated. The CTD promptly cordoned off the area, deploying additional forces to secure the vicinity. A bomb disposal squad was called to handle potential explosives. Upon entering the house, the squad disposed of several explosives safely. The department recovered a significant haul of weapons and explosives, including five hand grenades, one Kalashnikov rifle, a detonator, 70 feet of detonator wire, and 350 kilogrammes of explosive material. The recovered weapons and explosives were safely transported to a secure location. According to the CTD, the suspected terrorists were part of the Bashir Zaib group and had been planning a major terrorist attack. The press release said the department remained vigilant, focusing its efforts on dismantling terrorist networks and ensuring the safety and security of the public. Last month, terrorists belonging to Fitna-al-Hindustan launched attacks in several parts of Balochistan, leaving dozens of civilians dead. The attacks prompted Pakistan’s security forces to launch counterterrorism operations against the terrorists.

Fast-track property laws notified

The government has formally issued a gazette notification introducing new laws aimed at ending the years-long delays in cases related to the division of property and ancestral inheritance. Certified copies of the new legislation and SOPs have been circulated to district and sessions judges, all revenue department officers, commissioners, deputy commissioners, additional deputy commissioners (revenue), patwar circles and tehsildars to ensure effective implementation. Under the new notification, hearings in property partition cases will now be conducted electronically instead of through traditional paper files. Litigants will be able to access details of their hearings online from home. The time frame for deciding partition cases has been reduced from 180 days to 60 days. If a revenue officer fails to decide a case within 60 days, it will automatically be transferred to the assistant commissioner. Across Punjab, legal heirs will also be able to mutually divide inherited property through a simplified process. To ensure speedy dispute resolution, cases may be referred to a mediation committee. The time limit for filing an appeal has been fixed at 30 days and appellate decisions must also be made within 30 days. Factors causing procedural delays have been eliminated and no appeal will be allowed against interim orders. The government has implemented these changes through amendments to the Punjab Land Revenue Act, 1967. Commenting on the new law, District Bar Association President Tariq Mahmood Sajid Awan said meaningful results would depend on effective implementation. He noted that although the earlier law required decisions within 180 days, cases often dragged on for up to 10 years. While the time frame has now been reduced, its practical impact remains to be seen. Currently, nearly one million cases related to property and ancestral land disputes are pending across Punjab in courts, competent authorities and revenue boards, many of them pending for one to five years. He urged the government to issue immediate orders to dispose of pending cases within 40 days, warning that if old cases continue to linger, new cases may not be taken up for three to four years.

Mohsin Naqvi made more efforts than anyone to secure Imran Khan's release, Gandapur claims

Former Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Monday claimed that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had made more efforts than anyone to secure the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. Imran, 73, has been jailed since August 2023 after convictions he and the PTI call politically motivated. Since his 2022 ouster in a no-confidence vote, he has faced multiple cases, including over state gifts and an unlawful marriage. Some convictions have been suspended or overturned, with appeals pending. He denies wrongdoing. Naqvi has been a frequent subject of criticism from Imran and his party amid their tribulations and challenges. However, during an interview on Nadeem Malik Live on a private broadcaster, Gandapur said: "No one else made the same level of effort. I have said this before, within the party, and now I am saying it on air: Mohsin Naqvi made vigorous efforts to resolve the issue. He made more efforts than anyone else to ensure Imran Khan’s release." Gandapur said that Naqvi had spoken up for Imran even in front of Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, which "no one else dared to do". "Naqvi is the only person I have seen who can even get the Field Marshal to engage in a conversation. But I haven’t seen anyone else do that," the former chief minister assed. He further stated that that the PTI was angry with Naqvi for how he had treated the party, "including me, Imran was angry with him, but now I acknowledge Naqvi’s role in attempting to resolve the matter". Gandapur also mentioned that he no longer had any contact with the interior minister and that he did not hold any official position to discuss the matter. Last year, in October, Gandapur resigned as chief minister of K-P following directives from PTI founder. Despite stepping down, Gandapur remained a strong advocate for dialogue regarding Imran’s release. He frequently stressed that any negotiations should only involve those who held genuine decision-making authority, making it clear that Imran would not engage in talks with individuals lacking the necessary mandate. Gandapur was noted to have a more cordial relationship with Naqvi than most others in the PTI.

JI stages sit-ins at 10 sites in Karachi against arrest of workers

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) observed a nationwide day of protest on Sunday, on the appeal of its Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman against police violence and the arrest of workers at a protest outside the Sindh Assembly on Saturday. In Karachi, protest sit-ins were staged at 10 major arteries of the city. Sit-ins were staged at Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Super Highway, National Highway, Shahrah-e-Orangi, Shahrah-e-Korangi Crossing, Hub River Road (Sher Shah), Dawood Chowrangi, Lea Market, Shahrah-e-Sher Shah Suri Road, and Johar Mor on Rashid Minhas Road. Addressing protesters at Lasbela Chowk, JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar said the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is an anti-Karachi party and has become the establishment’s “A-plus team.” Zafar said that the PPP has usurped the rights of Karachi’s citizens and taken control of the city’s institutions and resources. He criticised the government for patronising riverine bandits while registering terrorism cases against those protesting for Karachi’s rights. Read More: Several arrested, injured as Karachi police clash with JI protesters near Sindh Assembly He added that the PPP’s 18-year rule has deprived Karachi’s residents of the right to live, but vowed that resistance and struggle would continue. Meanwhile, a special judicial magistrate (South) handed over 30 JI workers to police on one-day physical remand in a case registered under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). The workers face charges of arson, damaging public and private property, and rioting. JI Karachi Vice Amir and Karachi Metropolitan Corportation (KMC) Opposition Leader Advocate Saifuddin, along with other lawyers and party leaders, appeared before the court during the hearing. Prosecution told the court that the accused were booked for torching property and creating unrest, with terrorism clauses included in the FIR. The magistrate remanded them to police custody for further investigation. JI denounces terrorism charges Advocate Saifuddin strongly criticised the Sindh government for slapping terrorism charges on JI’s peaceful workers, who were arrested during a protest outside the Sindh Assembly. Speaking to media at City Courts, he said the workers were exercising their constitutional right against corruption and Karachi’s worsening civic problems when police launched a brutal crackdown. “It is shameful that terrorism clauses were added to the FIR, while the real terrorism is being carried out by the provincial government itself,” he remarked. According to JI, police used excessive force, including baton charge and heavy shelling, leaving four workers seriously injured. Shelling was also reported at two mosques, one of which caught fire. A firefighter was badly hurt when targeted while trying to extinguish the blaze. Saifuddin demanded immediate release of all detained workers, withdrawal of false cases. Over 300 booked A case had been registered at Aram Bagh police station on Sunday against a JI sit-in held outside the Sindh Assembly on Saturday, naming 34 individuals and 325 unidentified participants. The FIR includes charges of rioting, attempted murder, assault on police, damage to government property, road blockage, obstruction of official duty, violation of Section 144, and provisions of anti-terrorism laws. According to the complaint, senior party leaders — including Sufian Dilawar, Usman Sharif, Faizan and Jawad Shoaib — were overseeing the protest and allegedly inciting the crowd through speeches. Around 300 to 325 participants were present, some reportedly armed with sticks and batons. Police stated that the crowd turned violent and attacked officers, injuring Inspector Raja Masood, Preedy SHO Ayub Mirani, Shah Faisal Khan SHO and Constable Zohaib. Despite warnings and anti-riot measures, protesters allegedly remained aggressive, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse them. Some 30 suspects were arrested while others fled. Police said they recovered five spent 30-bore pistol shells, five 9mm shells, 15 wooden sticks, 35 stones and 79 tear gas shell casings from the scene. A police mobile was also damaged during the unrest.
