The federal government has decided to overhaul the legal and administrative structure of district administration across the country, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directing the preparation of recommendations within a month. According to a Cabinet Secretariat notification, an 18-member committee has been constituted to review existing laws and propose reforms aimed at enhancing governance, service delivery, law and order, and the enforcement of local and special laws. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will serve as convener, while Federal Minister for Establishment Ahad Cheema has been named co-convener of the 18-member committee. The panel also includes the attorney general, key federal secretaries, the chief secretaries of all four provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as Nabeel Awan, Nasir Mehmood Khosa, Agha Wasif, Pasand Khan Buleidi, and Naseem Sadiq. The committee has been tasked to examine district administration's role before and after the 2001 and devolution of powers, compare law-enforcement and public order mechanisms, and study administrative models of other countries. It is also empowered to propose amendments to existing laws, including the Code of Criminal Procedure, and suggest new legislation to strengthen district administration. The Cabinet Division will provide secretarial support, while the committee may co-opt additional members if required.
