SSGC admits LPG deal to impact supply

Officials of the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Thursday admitted in a parliamentary panel's meeting that its agreement with a private company for converting natural gas into the LPG might impact gas supply to its consumers. During a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Petroleum — presided over by Mustafa Mahmood—committee member Shahid Ahmed noted that gas shortages already exist in the country and yet the SSGC is planning to sign a contract with Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited (JJVL). SSGC officials confirmed that the contract would impact local gas supply. They informed the committee that the JJVL will convert gas into LPG and sell it to the private market. The committee questioned whether this agreement would reduce Sui Southern's gas supply and sought full details of the JJVL agreement in the next meeting. The parliamentary panel also raised questions with regard to deregulation of the petroleum sector. Committee member Shahid Khan noted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) has abundant natural resources. He questioned whether a survey had been conducted regarding these natural reserves. The committee sought details about surveys for the next meeting. During briefing on gas storage projects, officials said there is a need for gas storage facilities in the country. They said there was a plan to build a new gas storage project in the country. However, the committee recommended shutting down the gas storage project, arguing that necessity should be evaluated first. MNA Sardar Ghulam Abbas noted that earlier it was said that there were vast gold reserves in Balochistan. "Where are those reserves? First we must verify what exists and what does not," he added, The committee also expressed concerns over the absence of the minister of state for petroleum in the meeting. The chairman noted that the secretary petroleum was abroad but the minister of petroleum should have attended the meeting. Officials stated that a formula had been proposed by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for petroleum sector deregulation and 35% of newly discovered gas can be sold to the private sector. They said efforts are underway to deregulate the petroleum sector. MNA Asad Niazi questioned what will happen to the provinces if deregulation occurs. Petroleum officials responded that Sindh had raised this issue again in the CCI.

Experts warn of extinction of wolves in Pakistan without urgent conservation

As Pakistan has witnessed a dramatic decline in its wolf populations over the past few decades, experts warn that without immediate conservation measures, the already endangered species may face local extinction in the near future. The populations of both the Indian wolf and the Tibetan wolf in Pakistan are dwindling at an alarming rate, with only a few hundred individuals remaining in the country. Human-induced factors such as habitat destruction, retaliatory killings, and diminishing prey populations are the primary causes of this decline, according to Rab Nawaz, a senior official at WWF-Pakistan. “Pakistan has a rich diversity of wildlife, but many of its species, including wolves, are endangered and face the threat of local extinction,” Nawaz told Anadolu. In recent years, he added, human-induced pressures have intensified the decline of the wolf population in Pakistan, while significant gaps in ecological knowledge and population distribution further hinder conservation efforts. “The Indian wolf, in particular, is recognized as endangered in Pakistan, but key knowledge gaps regarding its population status and distribution make conservation efforts difficult,” he said. Recent genetic studies have revealed that Indian wolves are among the most evolutionarily distinct wolf populations, found only in India and Pakistan. Saeed-ul-Islam, a wildlife expert, agrees with Nawaz and emphasizes that the Indian wolf population is declining at a much faster rate than the Tibetan wolf, putting its survival at serious risk. The Tibetan wolf – also known as the Chinese wolf, Mongolian wolf, Korean wolf, Steppes wolf, or Woolly wolf – has a relatively stable population due to the nature of its habitat and less human encroachment, he explained. Believed to be a subspecies of the gray wolf, the Tibetan wolf is found in parts of central China, southwestern Russia, Manchuria, Tibet, and the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The species is already classified as “vulnerable” due to its low population and is included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a global body focused on nature conservation.   Urgent need for conservation measures Experts cite retaliatory killings, habitat loss, and growing human population as the primary factors behind the decline of the Indian wolf, which is found in the plains of southern Sindh, southwestern Balochistan, and northeastern Punjab provinces. “Human-wildlife conflict is the biggest factor, followed by population growth and habitat destruction, which threaten the Indian wolf with local extinction,” said Islam. Additionally, he pointed out that the prey base for the Indian wolf has drastically declined due to rapid deforestation and an increasing human footprint in recent decades. In contrast, the Tibetan wolf is found in the mountains of northern Gilgit-Baltistan, the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and the disputed Kashmir region, where it has relatively stable habitats, better prey availability, and lower human interaction. “But still, their population is vulnerable,” he cautioned. According to Islam, the Indian wolf population in Pakistan is likely no more than a few hundred, although no official population assessment has been conducted. “If serious conservation efforts are not undertaken immediately, we may lose the Indian wolf forever in the coming years,” he warned. He emphasized the urgent need for population assessments, identification of population clusters, establishment of sanctuaries, and habitat restoration to conserve the remaining Indian wolf population. “All of this cannot happen without a proper population assessment and identifying key habitat areas,” he said, acknowledging that the issue has not been given the necessary attention by either the government or wildlife organizations. Mohammad Kabir, who heads the Wildlife Ecology Lab at the University of Haripur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stressed that wolves kill a large number of livestock, which is a major factor in human-wildlife conflict. “To mitigate conflict, conservation management programs should include livestock insurance, vaccination, and awareness campaigns,” Kabir told Anadolu. Such measures, he explained, would help reduce livestock mortality due to disease and prevent retaliatory killings of wolves by farmers who suffer economic losses.   Role of wolves in ecosystem balance Pakistan holds over 23,000 square kilometers (8,880 square miles) of suitable wolf habitat, spread across remote and inaccessible areas that are connected by natural corridors, according to Kabir. Sharifuddin Baloch, the chief conservator of Balochistan’s Wildlife Department, said the government has declared several national parks and game reserves as protected areas for the Indian wolf in an effort to conserve its population. “The Indian wolf has already been designated as a protected species in Balochistan and the rest of Pakistan. However, conservation efforts have not yielded the desired results due to continued retaliatory killings, climate change, and the wolves’ own predatory behavior,” Baloch explained. “Conservation efforts have produced satisfactory results in protected areas, but they have been largely ineffective in other regions due to ongoing human-wildlife conflict,” he added. One of the primary reasons behind this conflict, he noted, is the way wolves hunt livestock. “They attack in packs and kill multiple animals at a time, unlike other carnivores that target only a single or a couple of animals for food. This makes them the number one enemy of farmers and shepherds,” Baloch said. Livestock is a primary source of livelihood in rural Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, where retaliatory killings of wolves are common. “The vast patrolling areas of wolves also make it difficult to protect them from human encounters and other dangers,” he added. Kabir, the wildlife researcher, emphasized the critical role of wolves in regulating prey populations and maintaining ecosystem balance. “Wolves are among the least studied carnivores in Pakistan and have been largely ignored in research and conservation programs. As top predators in their habitats, they regulate the population of other prey species,” he said. “Their absence would lead to an unchecked increase in prey populations, causing overgrazing, habitat degradation, resource competition, and ultimately the collapse of prey populations,” he warned. A decline in wolf populations, he added, could also lead to an increase in smaller predators, further disrupting the ecological balance. “As predators, wolves help control the spread of disease by targeting sick, old, and weak prey animals. Without them, disease could spread more rapidly among prey populations,” he noted.

Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to meet in Peshawar today for Ramadan moon sighting

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet in Peshawar today (Friday) for the Ramadan moon sighting. However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said there is little chance of sighting the Ramadan moon on Friday due to cloudy weather. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet in Peshawar at 6:30 pm on February 28 to determine the start of the holy month. The committee’s chairman, Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, will preside over the meeting after the Asr prayer. According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, zonal committees across the country will also convene separately to assess moon sighting reports. Religious scholars from various schools of thought will participate in the central session. The Met Office has forecast partly cloudy conditions across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, over the next 24 hours. "Due to cloudy weather, the chance of sighting the Ramadan moon is low," the department said. The PMD noted that at sunset, the moon’s age would be around 12 hours, with a moon-sun angular separation of about five degrees—factors that could further reduce visibility.

US Congressmen urge Marco Rubio to secure Imran Khan's release

US Congressmen Joe Wilson and August Pfluger have sent a joint letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging him to engage with Pakistan's military regime to secure the release of former prime minister Imran Khan. The letter, dated February 25, stated that Khan's imprisonment, which began in August 2023, is the result of politically motivated charges. It refers to Khan's ouster in 2022 through a vote of no-confidence as a "suspension of democracy" in Pakistan, leading to strained ties between the two countries. Wilson, a prominent member of the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services Committees and a close ally of US President Donald Trump, along with Pfluger, chair of the Republican Study Committee, expressed their concern about Khan's imprisonment and its implications for US-Pakistan relations. In the letter, Wilson and Pfluger assert that Khan is widely beloved in Pakistan and that his release would mark the beginning of a new era in US-Pakistan relations based on shared values of freedom. They likened Khan's situation to that of Trump, suggesting that Khan, like Trump, is a victim of judicial abuse. The congressmen also called on Rubio to work with Pakistan to restore democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and the fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech in the country. They stressed that Khan deserves to be treated like any other politician and should not be imprisoned for his political views. Wilson had previously posted on his X account calling for Khan’s release and shared a copy of the letter to Rubio, expressing hope that US-Pakistan relations could be strengthened through respect for freedom. The letter concludes by stating that the strength of US-Pakistan relations hinges on the freedom of Imran Khan, with Wilson and Pfluger urging Rubio to act decisively.

Pakistan rejects Indian media's claims of alleged threats to ICC Champions Trophy

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar strongly rebutted Indian media reports alleging a terror threat to foreign guests attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. Speaking in an interview on a private news channel on Monday, he stated that Pakistan was hosting the event “peacefully and very ably,” dismissing claims made by Indian outlets. Earlier, it was reported that Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau had issued a high alert regarding a potential plot by covert terror groups to abduct foreign guests attending the tournament for ransom. The report named several terror outfits, including Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Islamic State, and Balochistan-based groups. It further mentioned that Pakistan's security forces had deployed high-level protection teams to ensure the safety of the players and staff. In response, Tarar denounced the reports as false propaganda intended to harm Pakistan's image and sabotage the successful hosting of the tournament. He accused Indian media of politicising sports and spreading lies to undermine the event. He said, "Pakistan is one of the safest venues, and we have been able to conduct the ICC matches very peacefully and very efficiently." Tarar also criticised India's refusal to tour Pakistan for the tournament, instead opting to play all their matches in Dubai. He suggested that India’s campaign against Pakistan’s successful hosting of the event stemmed from jealousy and discomfort at the prospect of a major international sports event being held in Pakistan. The minister highlighted the packed stadium at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium during the England vs Australia match last week, praising the positive atmosphere and the presence of international fans. Tarar also refuted claims of low attendance, stating that the reports were fabricated. He concluded by reiterating that Pakistan would continue to host the tournament successfully, rejecting any attempts at spreading harmful propaganda. "India’s propaganda will fall flat on its face," he said, higlighting that the ICC Champions Trophy was a victory not just for Pakistan, but for the global sports community.

PMD warns of thunderstorms, heavy rains and snowfall

A strong westerly weather system has entered Pakistan, causing widespread rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall across various regions, as per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The system, which started in the western parts of the country, is expected to move towards the upper regions by February 25 and remain over northern areas until March 2. The weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to areas including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and parts of Balochistan. Key areas such as Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, and Shigar in Gilgit-Baltistan will experience heavy snowfall. In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, and surrounding areas are likely to see similar conditions from February 25 to March 2. K-P is expected to receive heavy rain and thunderstorms, affecting districts like Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Peshawar, lasting until March 1. Additionally, Murree Hills, Galliyat, and nearby areas will face moderate to heavy snowfall from February 25 to March 1. Meanwhile, from February 25 to 28, rain and thunderstorms are forecast for parts of Punjab and Islamabad, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan. Balochistan, particularly Quetta, Ziarat, and Mastung, will see rain and snowfall until February 26, with light rain expected in Larkana, Jacobabad, and Sukkur. The PMD has warned that heavy snowfall could disrupt travel in hilly areas like Murree, Naran, Kaghan, and Skardu, with flash floods and landslides possible in parts of K-P and Kashmir. Hailstorms are also a risk in some plain regions. The PMD has urged residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during this period, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advising precautions to prevent property damage and loss of life. On a positive note, the PMD highlighted that the rainfall would benefit standing crops, particularly in Punjab and K-P, helping improve agricultural conditions in those regions. As the weather system moves through the country, authorities are advising residents to stay alert, prepare for adverse weather conditions, and follow safety advisories to minimise the risk of harm and damage.

PTA begins licencing process for VPN service providers

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated the licencing of VPN service providers under the "Class Licence" category, marking a significant step in regulating data services in the country. On Monday, the PTA approved the applications of two companies for the grant of class licences to provide VPN services, an official statement confirmed. “This initiative enables businesses to utilise VPNs for lawful purposes, ensuring data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance while promoting transparency,” the PTA said in the statement. The PTA reiterated its commitment to supporting businesses in meeting their connectivity needs responsibly and urged more VPN service providers to apply for licencing.         View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by PTA (@ptaofficialpk) In November 2023, the telecommunication authority introduced a streamlined process for the registration of private internet gateways after unregistered VPNs were blocked in Pakistan. The regulatory move aimed to enhance internet security and protect users from potential threats. VPNs are widely used around the globe to access restricted content, with Pakistan being no exception. Citizens have relied on VPNs to access X, which has been banned in the country since February 2024 due to “national security concerns.” The growing censorship has driven the increased use of VPNs, with issues such as difficulties in sending media files via WhatsApp still persisting for some users. In response, the PTA, in collaboration with the Ministry of IT & Telecommunication, the Pakistan Software Export Board, and the Pakistan IT Association, designed a registration mechanism aimed at providing a secure environment for IT and e-commerce sectors. “The simplified framework supports uninterrupted access for IT companies, freelancers, and other stakeholders, reinforcing PTA’s commitment to Pakistan’s expanding digital economy,” the statement concluded.

K-P, Punjab face off over Imran meetings

The PTI-led K-P and PML-N-led Punjab governments squared off on Friday over access to Adiala Jail, with the former railing against restrictions on meeting incarcerated Imran Khan, while the latter brushed off the outcry as 'political grandstanding'. K-P Information Adviser Barrister Saif has strongly condemned the restrictions on meetings with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, calling it a clear sign of the government's desperation. In a statement, Barrister Saif claimed that a jailed Imran Khan has left the "illegitimate government" sleepless, alleging that the purpose of banning meetings and imposing other restrictions is to pressure him into making a deal. However, he asserted that the government should understand that "Imran Khan will not be part of any deal like Nawaz Sharif did". The K-P advisor further accused the "mandate-thief government" of not only violating fundamental human rights but also committing contempt of court. "The ban on meetings is raising serious doubts and has caused deep concern among party workers," he added. He demanded the immediate lifting of restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan. He also took aim at Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, saying her words and actions contradict each other. "She talks about providing facilities to Imran Khan in her speeches, but the reality is completely different," he added. 'PTI playing victim card' On the other hand, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari refuted claims of any restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan, saying that the incarcerated leader's family, lawyers and party leaders continue to meet him as usual. "The Punjab government has not imposed any ban on meetings with the PTI founder," Bokhari said, responding to remarks by K-P Information Adviser Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif. She added that those making such claims expect prisons to function like amusement parks, where anyone can visit at will without regulations. "When the Tehreek-e-Fasad [PTI] runs out of cards, they start playing the 'victim card,'" she alleged. In an apparent reference to Imran's missives to the army chief, she added that writing letters has neither secured nor will secure any deal for the party. Bokhari also slammed PTI for "running propaganda campaigns" against the very individuals they appeal to for relief. She alleged that around 50 PTI members in London protested during the army chief's visit, aligning themselves with foreign agendas. "The party that claims to represent overseas Pakistanis has seen all its calls rejected by them," she asserted. Bokhari added that PTI's politics remain incomplete without referring to Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz. Meanwhile, PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Junaid Akbar has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking permission to meet Imran in jail. Through Advocate Ayesha Khalid, Akbar submitted the petition stating that he was denied access to the PTI founder during a scheduled visit. 'Accidents cause more death than terrorism'

A member of a constitutional bench (CB) of the Supreme Court on Friday observed that more people die in the country in road accidents than due to terrorism or disease. "Does the government have any statistics with regard to the people perishing in accidents?" Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail asked while hearing a petition filed against road accidents caused by heavy, overloaded vehicles. During the hearing, the counsel for the petitioner, Barrister Zafarullah, argued that the real issue lies in the locations where vehicles are overloaded. "Without taking action against these loading points, the problem cannot be controlled," he said.

Govt approves tax exemptions for ICC in Champions Trophy 2025

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, has approved several critical economic decisions, including tax exemptions for the International Cricket Council (ICC) concerning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. One of the key decisions made in the meeting was the approval of a tax exemption for the ICC on its income related to the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This exemption is in line with international practices for hosting global sports events, and no tax or deductions will be imposed on the ICC’s income, subsidiaries, and affiliated entities as per the agreement between ICC and Pakistan. However, the ECC clarified that Pakistani citizens, including the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), will be required to pay taxes on income derived from the tournament. No exemptions will be granted on sales tax or federal excise duties. Additionally, the committee deferred a decision on the matter of lifting the ban on the commercial export of goats and sheep to Kuwait. The ECC also approved a supplementary technical grant of Rs6.859 billion for the Ministry of Energy to cover developmental expenses. Furthermore, the committee approved the extension of the LNG framework agreement between Pakistan LNG Limited and Sukar Trading for a period of three years.

Saudi Arabia, UAE top destinations for Pakistani workers in 2024

Pakistan sent 727,381 skilled workers to Middle Eastern and European countries in 2024, a record figure aimed at reducing unemployment and increasing remittances, state-run media reported on Thursday. According to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), most workers were employed in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman, while a significant number also secured jobs in European nations. The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development credited the achievement to "aggressive marketing strategies, improved facilitation, and strengthened ties with international employers." "This landmark achievement is a shining testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to providing Pakistani workers with lucrative employment opportunities abroad," the APP report stated. Pakistan’s workforce plays a crucial role in supporting the economy, with remittances serving as a vital source of foreign exchange amid ongoing macroeconomic challenges. The surge in overseas employment is expected to positively impact economic stability by increasing foreign inflows. In January, Overseas Pakistanis Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain emphasised the government’s focus on expanding opportunities in Saudi Arabia while ensuring a better-skilled workforce to enhance competitiveness in the Middle Eastern job market. Pakistan annually sends around one million skilled workers abroad, contributing to both economic growth and foreign exchange reserves.

Pak working with UAE on visa issues

Pakistan's Ambassador to the UAE, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, has described the Gulf country's refusal of visas to Pakistani nationals as a "serious and significant" issue, confirming that both countries are working to address it. Tirmizi's comments came in response to reports of declining visa approvals for Pakistanis, particularly over the past year, citing concerns over the applicants' failure to adhere to local laws, political activities, and alleged involvement in sloganeering. In an interview with Arab News, the ambassador stated that he had met with UAE officials from the ministries of foreign affairs and human resource development to resolve the matter. "This is a very serious issue and it has been raised at the highest level in all the interactions," Tirmizi said. "We are working to resolve the issue and hopefully they will be resolved, but the issue is quite significant and I cannot deny that." Tirmizi explained that the visa refusals were mainly due to document authenticity and the criminal records of some applicants. He highlighted that the UAE is now using artificial intelligence (AI) to verify documents, and any discrepancies could lead to rejection. "There was a major issue on the authenticity of education and qualification documents from Pakistan that has to be addressed," he said, adding that even genuine documents could be rejected if the attestation was found to be flawed. Tirmizi also stressed that individuals with criminal records should be barred from traveling abroad. "We have to improve systems within the country to ensure that only genuine travellers, genuine workers with a clean record, are allowed to travel outside and find jobs outside the country," he said. On the topic of employment opportunities, Tirmizi explained that the UAE no longer required unskilled labour, as much of its physical infrastructure had already been developed. "We have to train people now for high-skill jobs, like well-trained IT experts, people who are trained in artificial intelligence, people who are trained in accounting, people who have the skills, doctors, physiotherapists and laboratory technicians," he said. He further proposed the launch of a four-year nursing programme, which would be recognised in both the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. "Pakistan has a surplus of labour, and we have to improve the quality of education within Pakistan and make sure that those people have the necessary technical, cultural, soft skills and language skills to compete in the international market," Tirmizi added. Despite the challenges, Pakistan's remittances from the UAE have experienced significant growth. According to figures from Pakistan's diplomatic mission, remittances have increased by 53.9% year-on-year, with projections of $3.58 billion for FY2025.

PM Shehbaz vows to boost IT exports, freelance growth

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Wednesday that his government is working to improve telecommunication services and increase Internet access in remote areas of Pakistan, with a goal to expand IT exports and support the country’s growing freelancer community. At a meeting of the Economic Advisory Council, the PM outlined the government’s efforts to enhance the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and make internet access more widely available. This move, he said, would benefit freelancers across the country and boost IT exports. “We are working to increase the number of IT exports and freelancers in the country by improving telecommunication services and providing Internet access to remote areas,” he was quoted as saying by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The government’s plans to enhance connectivity come amid controversy over restrictive internet policies implemented last year, which sparked criticism from human rights activists and opposition groups. These policies included the blocking of social media platform X and the banning of virtual private networks (VPNs). Additionally, government moved to install a national firewall to regulate online content. While the government described these actions as efforts to make cyberspace safer, they have led to slower internet speeds and frustrated freelancers and IT professionals. During the meeting, PM Shehbaz praised his economic team for their work to ensure economic growth and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to driving sustainable economic development. “Development of industry, agriculture, IT, generating employment and increasing exports are among the top priorities of the government,” he said. Participants of the meeting noted that the country’s economy was moving toward stability, with increasing production due to price stability. The PMO added that the participants had presented several suggestions to Sharif across different sectors. “The prime minister directed relevant authorities to work with council members to formulate a comprehensive action plan regarding the suggestions,” the PMO said. PM Shehbaz also emphasised that his economic team would make full use of Pakistan’s current potential for regional trade and work to enable local industries to compete in the international market.

K-Electric seeks Rs4.95/unit tariff cut

Electricity consumers in Karachi are set to enjoy relief as K-Electric (KE) has sought a Rs4.95 per unit reduction in power tariffs for December 2024 due to fuel charges adjustment. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has scheduled a public hearing on February 26 to consider KE's request for a negative fuel charges adjustment (FCA), according to industry sources. According to KE's petition, the adjustment is based on the interim reference tariff of March 2023, resulting in a total reduction of Rs4.94 billion in fuel costs. In addition to the FCA adjustment, KE has requested NEPRA to consider an additional adjustment of Rs5 billion for fuel costs incurred from July to December 2024. The power utility argues that the amount is pending due to partial load, open cycle, degradation curves and startup costs. It has urged the authority to allow the adjustment to prevent a future burden on consumers. As per details, NEPRA has framed three key questions for deliberation during the hearing, including whether the requested FCA is justified and whether KE has followed the merit order while giving dispatch to its power plants as well as power purchases from external sources. It will further deliberate over whether the request of KE to consider adjustment of accumulated actualisation of fuel cost on account of partial load, open cycle and degradation curves along with startup cost from July to December 2024, from the negative fuel cost variation is justified.

Security forces kill 30 terrorists in South Waziristan IBO: ISPR

Security forces have killed 30 terrorists during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the South Waziristan District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), the military's media wing said on Tuesday. This operation follows the elimination of 15 terrorists in two separate operations in K-P last week. The operation took place on Monday in the Sararogha area, following reports of the presence of Khwarij militants. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated that the security forces effectively engaged the militants' location, leading to the death of the 30 terrorists. “During the conduct of the operation, own troops effectively engaged the Khwarij location, as a result of which, thirty Khwarij were sent to hell,” the ISPR added. The military further stated that a sanitisation operation was underway in the region to clear the area of any remaining terrorists. “Security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country,” the ISPR concluded. The operation is part of Pakistan's ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, particularly in the tribal areas where militant groups have historically operated. Over 13,000 police personnel to be deployed for ICC Champions Trophy

Pakistan is set to host its first major International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament in nearly three decades, with over 13,000 police personnel deployed across the cities of Lahore and Rawalpindi for security. The event, the ICC Champions Trophy, will be held from February 19 to March 9, and will take place in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. The deployment comes after years of security concerns in the wake of a 2009 militant attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, which led to international teams avoiding tours to Pakistan. Following the attack, Pakistan's cricket scene struggled to host international teams, but the situation began to improve in 2019 with the return of the Sri Lankan Test team. In the years since, foreign players have participated in Pakistan’s domestic T20 leagues, marking a slow but steady return of international cricket. This year’s tournament will see Pakistan hosting eight teams, but India's matches will be held in the United Arab Emirates. India’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan stems from its government's security concerns. To ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans, over 13,000 police officers will be on duty during the matches in Lahore and Rawalpindi. More than 8,000 officers will be assigned to security tasks in Lahore, while more than 5,000 will be stationed in Rawalpindi. Senior officers, district superintendents, inspectors, and women officers will all be part of the security force. Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar stated that the police are conducting intelligence-based operations around the players' residences and along team routes to the stadiums. The Safe Cities Authority will monitor the area through cameras, ensuring security at stadiums, hotels, and other venues. Police units will conduct regular patrols during the matches, and snipers will be positioned on tall buildings around stadiums to ensure additional protection. Dr Anwar assured the public that the authorities are committed to providing a peaceful and secure environment for the tournament, urging fans to follow all security and safety protocols. The tournament will be hosted across three venues: Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. Both Lahore and Karachi stadiums have undergone extensive renovations to enhance the viewing experience for spectators and improve broadcast quality. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will mark Pakistan’s return to hosting major international cricket tournaments since it co-hosted the 1996 World Cup with Sri Lanka and India. As the country prepares for this milestone event, authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and smooth organisation of the ICC Champions Trophy, sending a message of resilience and commitment to the world of cricket.

Pakistan ready for growth despite opposition criticism: Maryam Nawaz

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said that Pakistan is in a position to "take off" despite opposition criticism, as she accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of fostering chaos and damaging the economy. Speaking at a cheque distribution ceremony for the CM Punjab Asaan Karobaar Programme, Maryam claimed that Pakistanis were witnessing improvements in their lives. “People of Pakistan are fed up with violence and chaos,” she said. She criticised the previous PTI-led government for driving inflation to 38%, alleging that their policies scared away foreign investors. Highlighting her government’s infrastructure initiatives, Maryam said Punjab was currently building 700 roads. In an apparent reference to PTI founder Imran Khan, she dismissed criticism that road construction does not contribute to economic growth. “If building roads doesn’t bring development, can siege and burn bring it?” she asked. She said that young people now understood who was responsible for their struggles. “It is very easy to accuse someone and throw insults,” she said, adding that “time quickly changed, and that person is now locked up in Adiala Jail,” in a clear reference to Imran Khan. Maryam said Pakistan could not afford more political chaos, warning that failure to ensure progress would push many young people into despair. “The opposition is not able to digest Punjab’s progress… their politics has reached the point of slapping each other,” she said, referring to the recent physical altercation between Fawad Chaudhry and lawyer Shoaib Shaheen. Discussing the Asaan Karobaar Programme, Maryam said the Punjab government was providing interest-free loans ranging from Rs1 million to Rs30 million to help businesses grow. “Loans are being provided on 100% merit… no favouritism will work,” she assured. She acknowledged that job creation was a challenge but insisted the economy had improved in the past year, with people’s standard of living rising. “When we came to power, the inflation rate was at 38%, which has now reduced to 4%,” she claimed. The Punjab government has received 185,000 applications for business loans, she added, stating that as businesses grow, employment opportunities will increase.

Pakistan urges UN action on Kashmir and Palestine, reaffirms OIC support

Pakistan on Monday emphasised the need to resolve the conflicts in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine by allowing their peoples to exercise the UN-promised right to self-determination. “The principles of self-determination and the non-acquisition of territory through the use or threat of force are fundamental to maintaining world order,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar during a special meeting of OIC Ambassadors at the UN. “Respect for these principles is critical to achieving just solutions for both Palestine and the Jammu and Kashmir dispute,” added Dar, who had arrived on Sunday afternoon to participate in the UN Security Council’s high-level meeting on global governance and multilateralism. He further stated that in both conflicts, the implementation of these principles is crucial to ending foreign occupation and ensuring freedom. At the outset, Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to advancing the common goals of the OIC at the UN. He specifically expressed that Pakistan would continue to advocate for a just and lasting peace in Palestine, calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, unhindered humanitarian assistance, and firm opposition to any efforts aimed at displacing the Palestinian people. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s full support for the two-state solution, envisioning a viable, sovereign state of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. The DPM also reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the just struggle of the Kashmiri people, urging the international community to seek a peaceful resolution to the IIOJK dispute in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. In addition, Dar voiced concern over reported Israeli threats to conduct further attacks against Iran, emphasizing that such actions would pose a severe threat to regional and international peace and security. “Despite the hostile rhetoric, it is our hope that all parties will seek to revive the JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal) on equitable terms. This should contribute significantly to achieving durable peace and security across the Middle East,” he added. The FM reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts affecting Muslim countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter. He also stressed the urgent need to combat Islamophobia and called for the prompt appointment of a UN Special Envoy, in line with the OIC’s collective efforts to counter this growing global trend. Dar concluded by underscoring Pakistan’s strong commitment to working closely with OIC member states during its Security Council term on all issues of mutual interest.

Pakistan calls for global debt restructuring

Pakistan has called for reforming the international debt architecture to make it more equitable, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of developing countries. "In the absence of a predictable global system for restructuring debt, most countries facing debt-distress are opting to continue servicing their debts, at the cost of diverting resources from areas critical for long-term growth and development, such as health and education," Senator Syed Faisal Ali Sabzwari told the Annual Parliamentary Hearing, a joint initiative of the President of UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Pakistan's skilled labour can support Saudi Vision 2030: Finance minister

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has highlighted the country’s potential to export skilled labour to Saudi Arabia in alignment with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 development framework. Speaking on the sidelines of the Emerging Market Economies Conference in AlUla, Aurangzeb emphasised the growing opportunities for Pakistan to support Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation. “We do think there is big potential in terms of exports from Pakistan, especially with respect to skilled labour, in terms of everything that Saudi Arabia requires in terms of executing Vision 2030,” he said, adding, “So, there are a number of opportunities for the two countries to work together.” Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 aims to reduce the Kingdom’s reliance on oil and boost sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation, and tourism. The initiative has created an increasing demand for skilled workers, which Pakistan hopes to meet. With over two million Pakistanis already working in Saudi Arabia, the country remains a major source of remittances for Islamabad. While most Pakistani workers in the Kingdom are employed in blue-collar jobs, demand for skilled labour is expected to rise as Saudi Arabia modernises its economy. Pakistan’s Education and Professional Training Ministry has been working on a new education policy to train at least a million young people annually with technical skills suited for employment in the Gulf region, including Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has proposed a partnership with the Pakistani government to provide training programmes to equip Pakistani youth with “modern and relevant skills” required by the Saudi job market, according to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office.

Imran Khan orders to expel lawmakers absent on 26th Amendment poll day

In a decisive move, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has ordered the expulsion of lawmakers who were absent during the vote on the 26th Constitutional Amendment, sparing only Zain Qureshi. According to PTI insiders, Imran Khan has directed the senior leadership to issue formal notifications expelling all absent members except Zain Qureshi. He has made it clear that those who failed to show up on a crucial constitutional amendment vote have no place in the party. Khan has also sent a message to the party’s senior leadership, emphasizing that action must be taken against the absentee members without delay. The party has begun issuing show-cause notices to those who failed to participate. PTI sources revealed that Zarqa Suharwardy, Senator Faisal Saleem, and Zain Qureshi were among those absent on the day of the amendment vote. Meanwhile, Aslam Ghumman, Riaz Fatyana, Zain Qureshi, Miqdar Ali Khan, and Aurangzeb Kachhi were already served show-cause notices. Additionally, PTI-backed lawmakers Zahoor Qureshi, Usman Ali, and Mubarak Zaib were reportedly unreachable by the party leadership on the day of the vote. In light of these developments, Imran Khan has now ordered the formal expulsion notification for all absent lawmakers. His move signals a zero-tolerance approach toward internal dissent and reinforces PTI’s stance on party discipline.

Government announces reduction in petrol, diesel prices

The government has announced a reduction in fuel prices by up to Rs5, effective from February 16, 2025. High-speed diesel (HSD), which is widely used in agriculture and transport sectors, will see a price drop of Rs4 per litre. The new price for HSD will be Rs263.95, down from the previous rate of Rs267.95 per litre. In addition to HSD, the price of petrol has also been reduced by Rs1 per litre. The new petrol price will be Rs256.13, following a similar decrease in the second fortnight of February 2025. Furthermore, the prices for kerosene and light diesel have been lowered by up to Rs5 per litre. Kerosene will now be available at Rs171.65 per litre, while light diesel will cost Rs155.81 per litre.   In a statement, the finance ministry said that the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had reviewed and adjusted consumer prices for petroleum products in light of recent fluctuations in the international oil market. It further stated that the prices of these products had been fixed for the next fortnight of the current month. Earlier, it was reported that the price of diesel was expected to be significantly reduced by Rs9.11 per litre for the fortnight beginning on February 16, in line with fluctuations in global oil prices. Pakistan is a net importer of petroleum products therefore any reduction in their prices is attributed to movements in global markets. Local prices are calculated while considering the existing tax rates and the inland freight equalisation margin. There is no adjustment in terms of rupee-dollar exchange rate. The government is currently charging Rs60 per litre in petroleum levy on petrol and high-speed diesel each. The levy was supposed to be invested in the development of oil sector like setting up storages but it has never been utilised for the intended purpose. The government used the revenue to meet its current expenditures.

3,000 utility store employees laid off in a single day amid restructuring

In a major move, the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) has initiated a large-scale restructuring, resulting in the termination of nearly 3,000 employees in a single day. According to reports, the layoff orders were issued on a holiday, with the first phase of the restructuring focusing on the dismissal of daily wage workers. Reports indicate that most of the dismissed employees had been with the corporation for over 10 years. In the next phase, thousands of contract workers are also expected to face termination. This restructuring follows a recent decision by the federal government as on January 22, the federal cabinet formed a committee to review the potential closure of USC operations. Government sources revealed that the committee will be led by the Federal Minister for Industries and Production, and will include key figures such as the Minister of State for Finance and Revenue, the Minister of State for IT, as well as senior officials from the ministries of Finance, Industries, Privatization, and the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP). In August 2024, the federal government made the decision to shut down the Utility Stores Corporation (USC). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought proposals regarding the closure, and as part of this process, the government also discontinued a Rs 50 billion subsidy for USC. Additionally, in a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, a decision was made to reduce administrative costs and streamline the state machinery, leading to the closure of 28 departments across five ministries. These included the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, the Ministry of States and Frontier Regions, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, the Ministry of Industries and Production, and the Ministry of National Health Services. The Ministry of Industries and Production also included USC in the privatization list in August 2024. The Privatization Commission hired a financial advisor, with plans to privatize the corporation in stages. On November 15, 2024, during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on Industries and Production, Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain revealed that 3,000 of the USC's 11,000 employees had been hired during the tenure of former Punjab Chief Minister Manzoor Watto, who recruited them from the Tehsil of Dera Ghazi Khan. Minister Tanveer confirmed that, while discussions had taken place about closing USC, the Ministry of Industries and Production had opposed the move. He also noted that many stores in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan were operating at a loss, with 2,400 out of 4,300 stores reporting financial deficits.

The government is taking significant measures to bridge the skills gap and enhance the global competitiveness of workers aspiring to work abroad, particularly in the Middle East. During a National Assembly session, Parliamentary Secretary for Federal Education and Professional Training, Farah Naz Akbar, outlined the government’s workforce development strategy. The government has established the Pakistan Skill Company and the Pakistan Skill Development Fund to centralise and improve vocational training across the country. Revisions to the National Vocational Qualification Framework (NVQF) have also aligned Pakistani qualifications with international standards, particularly for the European Union (EU) and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The government is incorporating life and soft skills—such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and work ethics—into technical and vocational training programs, aimed at meeting the needs of Middle Eastern employers. Additionally, the curriculum is being updated to reflect industry trends and technological advancements to ensure that Pakistani workers are prepared for evolving job market demands. Shifting towards competency-based training programMEs, which focus on practical skills and hands-on experience, the government is ensuring that workers are not only trained but also proficient in the job-specific skills required by employers in the Middle East. These reforms are part of a broader strategy to boost Pakistan’s labour force and create better employment opportunities for skilled workers abroad.  Furthermore, in response to concerns over the tragic boat accidents involving illegal immigrants attempting to reach European shores, authorities are also working to open legal employment avenues abroad.

Pindi couple charged with 13-year-old maid's murder over alleged theft

A Pakistani couple appeared in court on Thursday, accused of murdering a 13-year-old maid, Iqra, who was allegedly beaten with a rolling pin for allegedly stealing chocolate. Iqra was rushed to the hospital in Rawalpindi on Tuesday in critical condition and later died from severe injuries. According to Rawalpindi police spokesperson Sajjad ul Hassan, the couple, Rashid Shafiq and his wife Sana, were charged with murder and remanded in custody for four days while an investigation is conducted. The spokesperson revealed that the child had multiple fractures, including to her legs, arms, and head, and that the abuse was allegedly due to a missing chocolate. Iqra's father, Sanaullah, a resident of a rural village in Punjab, revealed that his daughter had been working with the couple for 22 months, during which time they paid him just 8,000 rupees ($28) a month. "The beasts tortured my daughter in a way that no human could ever do," he said. "I demand justice for this brutality." In a similar case in Rawalpindi in 2020, a couple was arrested for allegedly murdering their seven-year-old maid, who was blamed for allowing a pet bird to escape. Child labour remains widespread in Pakistan, with the International Labour Organization (ILO) reporting in 2022 that one in every four households employs a child in domestic work, particularly girls aged 10-14. While it is illegal to employ children under the age of 15, economic hardship often forces impoverished families to send their young daughters to work.

NA greenlights MPs' pay hike amid protest

The National Assembly, despite fierce protests from PTI lawmakers, on Tuesday passed a bill increasing salaries and perks for parliamentarians through a majority vote. The National Assembly's Finance Committee, led by NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, approved the proposed raise in the monthly salary of each MNA and senator to Rs519,000. Previously, lawmakers were receiving Rs180,000 per month. The legislation, which aims to amend the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) Act, 1974 [The Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill, 2025], has already been approved by the Senate. Earlier, the session descended into chaos as PTI lawmakers staged a vociferous protest, chanting slogans, creating a ruckus and pointing out quorum issues, ultimately forcing an adjournment before the agenda could be completed. NA Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan seized his long-awaited opportunity to raise a point of order, blasting the government over alleged political victimisation of the opposition. Ayub accused former army chief retired Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa of intentionally preventing the introduction of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in elections, arguing that their presence would have made it impossible to manipulate results in favour of the current government. Addressing delays in forming a parliamentary committee for the appointment of the chief election commissioner, NA Speaker Sadiq clarified that letters had already been dispatched to both the government and opposition parties. The committee, he assured, would be constituted as soon as nominations were received. However, he took exception to the remarks from an Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge questioning parliament's effectiveness, warning that such statements were an outright assault on the institution's authority. "No one has the right to undermine the dignity of parliament," he asserted, vowing that the sanctity of the legislature would not be compromised under any circumstances. His strong rebuke came in response to judicial remarks regarding the roles of the judiciary, executive and legislature. NA Speaker Sadiq asserted that while the judiciary and executive were pillars of the state, dismissive statements about parliament's relevance are unacceptable. "We will not tolerate any attacks on the credibility of this institution," he said, defending the supremacy of the legislature. The already heated session boiled over when Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar rose to respond to the opposition leader's accusations. PTI lawmakers immediately erupted in protest, standing on their seats, pounding desks and tearing up copies of the agenda before hurling them across the chamber. In response to their chants branding the assembly a "fake parliament," Tarar shot back, saying, "If you call it fake, put it in writing and stop taking salaries from it". Despite the uproar, Romina Khurshid Alam, PM's coordinator on Climate Change, managed to present the Members of Parliament Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025 which was swiftly passed by a majority.

Punjab revises prison rules, raising questions on Imran Khan's relocation

The Punjab interior ministry has implemented changes to prison regulations, allowing inmates to serve sentences in their local areas, sparking discussions on whether this will affect the imprisonment location of Imran Khan. The ministry has recently approved significant changes to prison regulations, marking a key shift in the management of incarcerated individuals in the province. A meeting on Monday reviewed reports on the implementation of these reforms, which include provisions aimed at improving the living conditions and rehabilitation of prisoners. One of the most notable changes is the new rule allowing convicted prisoners to serve their sentences in jails located in their native regions. Previously, according to the jail rules, criminals had to serve their sentences in the jail located in the area where the crime was committed. However, the revised regulations now permit criminals to be transferred to jails in their own districts, provided they are convicted within Punjab. One officer explained, “Although the rules are in place, the situation for high-profile cases like Imran Khan's remains distinct. He had previously approached the court regarding this issue, but due to security concerns, he was not granted a transfer. Even after the rules change, if his permanent residence is still in Lahore, it is likely that his security needs will be prioritized." Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Punjab Interior Ministry stated that the new rules have been largely implemented, though each case involving prisoner transfers will be assessed individually. "The department has received some requests from criminals who wish to remain in their current jails, and these requests are being considered on a case-by-case basis, with input from security agencies taken into account," they added. In addition to these changes, the ministry has also introduced a significant shift in how prison labour is compensated. Under the new regulations, prisoners will no longer work for free. Instead, prisons will now operate in-house factories through public-private partnerships, producing various goods. The products created will be sold in the market, and the earnings will be used to compensate the prisoners. This marks the first time in the province that prisoners are being paid for labour as part of their sentence, a significant step toward improving their welfare and rehabilitation prospects while serving their time.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Yasmin Rashid indicted in May 9 riots case

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Monday indicted 21 individuals, including senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Dr Yasmin Rashid, in connection with the May 9, 2023, riots. The charges relate to the violent protests that occurred after the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan, including the alleged torching of a container at Kalma Chowk. The indictment was announced by Lahore ATC Judge Arshad Javed during a hearing at Kot Lakhpat Jail, where Qureshi denied the charges. The court adjourned the hearing until February 17 and summoned prosecution witnesses. The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following Khan’s arrest in connection with the £190 million settlement case. PTI workers and leaders were arrested for their involvement in the protests, which targeted both civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military condemned the events as a "Black Day" and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act. As a result of the unrest, many PTI members were arrested and tried in military courts. In December, a military court convicted 25 individuals, including Imran Khan’s nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and later sentenced 60 more. In January, 19 convicts had their sentences pardoned following successful mercy appeals, although PTI expressed dissatisfaction over the limited number of pardons. The military trials had initially been halted following a Supreme Court ruling but were resumed following the court's instructions to finalize pending cases and announce judgments for those involved in the violent incidents. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has strongly opposed the trial of civilians in military courts, citing constitutional concerns.

PTI hails public support on 'black day'

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has lauded the nation's 'overwhelming response' to the call by incarcerated party supremo Imran Khan to observe the first anniversary of the February 8 "electoral fraud" as a black day. In a statement on Sunday, Waqas commended the public for standing firm against what he termed the government's "oppressive tactics", demonstrating unwavering support for their leader through a record-breaking public gathering in Swabi. Denouncing the government's crackdown, Waqas condemned the arbitrary detention of PTI leaders and workers, as well as the violent suppression of peaceful protests. He said that the demonstrations were a rightful response to the "mega poll robbery committed on February 8, 2024, in broad daylight". He demanded the immediate release of all imprisoned PTI leaders and workers, asserting that an "awakened nation cannot be intimidated or silenced through brutal and inhumane tactics". Waqas lambasted the two dynastic political parties -- PPP and PML-N -- saying that they had repeatedly been given opportunities by the nation but had only prioritised their own interests, enriching themselves at the people's expense. He recalled that Imran Khan had long predicted that the Sharif and Zardari families were never in conflict for the country's welfare but rather for their own political gains. "Imran Khan had foreseen how these political dynasties would eventually unite against PTI in a desperate attempt to salvage their dwindling political fortunes," he noted. He accused the PPP and PML-N of forming a "marriage of convenience" due to their interwoven interests, adding that their so-called disagreements were nothing but a distraction. Regarding the PPP's repeated threats to leave the government, Waqas dismissed them as a ploy, stating that the government was using NAB to reopen corruption cases against PPP leaders to maintain control. He also ridiculed the "bittersweet relations" between the two parties, labelling their public disputes as mere eyewash. "Both parties are solely focused on safeguarding their own interests, with no genuine concern for Pakistan's welfare or the well-being of its people," he said. He further alleged that their ultimate goal was to dismantle PTI by keeping Imran Khan, party leaders, and workers in arbitrary detention, suppressing dissent, and undermining the democratic process. Waqas condemned the non-elected government for subjecting Imran Khan to "inhumane treatment, including solitary confinement and stripping him of all constitutionally and legally guaranteed privileges as a former prime minister".

Army officer adopts infant girl rescued after being buried alive

An army officer has adopted an infant girl who was buried alive in the country's northwest, according to state media reports on Saturday. The baby, who was saved by emergency responders, was later taken to a local hospital for treatment. The incident occurred in Nowshera, where the infant was buried alive, a tragic case that drew widespread attention across social media and Pashto news channels. The child was rescued by the Rescue 1122 team, a Pakistani emergency response service, who intervened just in time. Major Waqas, an army officer attending a course in Risalpur, learned of the baby's plight and visited the hospital to check on her condition. After completing the necessary legal procedures, Major Waqas adopted the infant through the civil court. The report from Radio Pakistan did not provide details about the identity of those responsible for burying the child, how the authorities were alerted, or the circumstances surrounding the girl's rescue. Cases of abandoned newborns, particularly girls, are not rare in Pakistan, where social stigma, gender discrimination, and fear of backlash often drive people to take desperate measures. To combat this, the Edhi Foundation, one of Pakistan’s largest humanitarian organisations, has set up cradles outside its offices in various cities, encouraging parents to leave unwanted babies there rather than abandon or harm them. The case has sparked significant public discussion, with many praising Major Waqas for his decision to adopt the child, highlighting both the tragedy of the situation and the officer's compassion.
