The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Monday stated that the fifth Covid-19 wave, driven by the highly contagious new Omicron variant, was spreading across Pakistan at a great pace. The concern was shared during the forum's meeting held earlier today. The NCOC discussed the epidemic curve chart data, national vaccine strategy and disease prevalence across the country, and agreed upon taking strict measures regarding the obligatory inoculation regime, mentioned the statement issued by the forum. The NCOC session was chaired by Federal Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar and National Coordinator Major General Muhammad Zafar Iqbal. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan attended the meeting. NCOC urged people to get vaccinated, wear masks and keep social distancing to avoid the spread of the fifth wave of Covid-19. It also mentioned that vaccinated people were less affected by Omicron. The nation’s nerve centre on the pandemic also reviewed the district-wise vaccination targets and directed provinces to achieve their set vaccination targets as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the virus. "All-out efforts are being made by engaging provinces to achieve the set vaccination targets," concluded the statement.
