A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and several districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) - including Peshawar, Mansehra and Abbottabad - in the early hours of Monday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The PMD reported that the Seismic Network of Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded the 6.0 magnitude earthquake at 12:08 on September 01, with its epicentre located in southern Afghanistan at a latitude of 34.82°N and longitude of 70.74°E. Soon after the tremors, residents in the affected areas rushed out of their homes in panic. No casualties or property damage have been reported so far. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that several K-P districts also experienced tremors, which were recorded at 5.4 magnitude locally. The authority said it has alerted district administrations to remain prepared for any unforeseen situation. “The process is underway to collect information regarding any losses; however, no reports of human or material damage have been received yet,” PDMA officials said.

Punjab launches massive afforestation, eco-tourism drive under CM’s directives
The provincial government has launched a large-scale plantation and environmental protection programme aimed at expanding forests, promoting eco-tourism, and introducing modern monitoring systems. The initiative was formally inaugurated at Jallo by Parliamentary Secretary for Forests Kanwal Liaqat under the Friends of Forest programme. According to the Forest Department, the Chief Minister’s Plant for Pakistan Initiative envisions planting more than 51 million trees on 50,869 acres across the province. Under the CM Agroforestry Initiative, another 1.37 million saplings are being planted on 3,790 acres of forest wasteland. The scope of the Green Pakistan Programme has also been widened, targeting 466 million trees over 251,000 acres. Along irrigation channels, plantation projects are underway covering 10,223 avenue miles, where five million trees will be lined along canal banks. https://ift.tt/TV7XCru Beyond plantation, the government is also investing in eco-tourism. At Lal Suhanra National Park and the Salt Range, world-class facilities are being introduced, including wireless networks, GPS devices, CCTV cameras, and digital surveillance systems. Construction has also begun on a LEED-certified eco-friendly multi-storey complex to provide modern facilities for staff and visitors. To mitigate natural hazards in hilly terrains, the Shielding Summits Programme is being rolled out in Murree and Kahuta. It includes the recruitment of 600 fire watchers, provision of fire vehicles, construction of watch towers, restoration of forest tracks, and building of water tanks to preserve natural springs. The Forest Department is also embracing technology for real-time protection. Forest DG Azfar Zia stated that a GIS-based protection system is now operational, employing drones, satellites, and LiDAR technology for instant detection of wildfires and encroachments. A dedicated digital communication cell has been set up, while the monitoring and evaluation Wing has been upgraded with modern surveillance tools and additional manpower. Tree inventories across Punjab are being digitised through GIS-based surveys and digital numbering. To speed up forestry operations, the government has procured new machinery for plantation and other forest-related works. For round-the-clock vigilance, 104 forest command and control centres are now functional across the province, significantly strengthening Punjab’s capacity to protect and expand its forests. Environmental expert Dr Salman Tariq said that while the monsoon season is ideal for tree plantation, it is not feasible during flooding. He warned that saplings submerged in floodwater or without strong roots are likely to be washed away. Dr Tariq added that although the Forest Department has set an ambitious plantation target, drives in inundated areas will have to wait until the water recedes, which could affect the overall goal.

NDMA issues alert for new spell of heavy rains
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for heavy rains expected across Islamabad and Punjab from September 1 to 3. The authority has cautioned that ongoing flood conditions could worsen with the new spell of heavy rains. Flood-prone districts—including Murai, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, and Hafizabad—face heightened risk, while Lahore, Chiniot, Sialkot, and Faisalabad are also under threat due to the forecasted deluge. Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Sahiwal, and Rahim Yar Khan are also on alert for emerging flood conditions. Read More: Devastating floods have displaced nearly 2m people Heavy downpours and swift currents may pose a critical threat at the Marala Headworks and may spill over into adjacent hamlets, NDMA cautioned. Residents in low-lying areas adjacent to streams are advised to remain on high alert and avoid non-essential travel, as water levels may rise unexpectedly. اسلام آباد و پنجاب کے مختلف اضلاع میں1تا3 ستمبر تک شدید موسلادھار بارشوں کا امکان۔ جسکے باعث متاثرہ علاقوں میں سیلابی صورتحال میں شدت کا امکان ہے۔مری، راولپنڈی، جہلم، اٹک، منڈی بہاؤالدین، گجرات، گوجرانوالہ اور حافظ آباد میں شدید بارشوں کے باعث سیلابی صورتحال مزید خراب ہو سکتی ہے pic.twitter.com/Hxr0vAtUHF — NDMA PAKISTAN (@ndmapk) August 31, 2025 The authority also urged departments concerned to keep emergency machinery and pumps ready to protect infrastructure, and keep communities updated about potential hazards. The warning came as Punjab faces another flood threat, potentially more severe than the recent one, following India’s release of massive amounts of water from the Salal Dam without official notice. According to Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the release is expected to send an estimated 800,000 cusecs of floodwater into Chenab within 48 hours, raising fears of ‘extremely high flood conditions’ across multiple districts. Also Read: Displaced Pakistani women face uncertainty amid rising floodwaters PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said all districts along the Chenab have been placed on high alert, with commissioners and deputy commissioners have been instructed to remain in the field. “The next 36 hours are critical,” he warned, stressing that the water level could reach a dangerous level at Head Marala. The surge comes as flooding has already caused widespread destruction along the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers. Meanwhile, with Tarbela Dam now at 100 per cent capacity and Mangla at 82 per cent, officials warn that the margin for absorbing further inflows is rapidly shrinking.

Devastating floods have displaced nearly 2m people
Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik on Sunday warned that devastating floods have displaced nearly two million Pakistanis, disproportionately affecting the poorest families, and urged the nation to unite in providing urgent support to the victims. While the flooding has largely impacted rural communities near riverbanks, several urban areas — including parts of Lahore, have also experienced heavy inundation. Talking to reporters, Malik said, government’s top priority is the poorest people who are in dire need of urgent aid. Read More: Punjab under 'extremely high flood' threat again as India opens dam gates He urged citizens and NGOs to come forward and extend all possible help to the flood-hit people. Accompanied by NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, he stressed on urgent relief measures including food, medicines, mosquito nets, clean water, water tanks, and temporary power supplies. He also asked authorities to remain vigilant against possible outbreak of epidemics in crowded camps. Malik said, “Although Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is abroad, he is receiving daily briefings and issuing guidance on relief measures, with the same information shared with Army Chief, Field Marshal General Asim Munir, who is on-site overseeing the relief operations. This aerial view shows partially submerged residential buildings following the overflowing of the Ravi River in Lahore. Photo: AFP “The federal government is standing with the provinces, and the Army, Rangers, NDMA, PDMA, and Rescue 1122 are all working together,” Malik said. He further mentioned, “At flood convergence zones including Head Trimmu, Head Panjnad, and Kot Mithan, authorities are adopting measures to keep water flows under one million cusecs and plan controlled breaches to protect populated areas.” Malik warned that the Panjnad system may experience water flows up to three million cusecs if floods intensify. “Climate change is the main cause of torrential rains, flooding and glaciers melting,” Malik said, noting Pakistan emits less than one per cent of global carbon, while the top 8–10 polluters contribute 70 per cent. Also Read: Erdoğan pledges solidarity with flood-hit Pakistan on SCO sidelines He praised the rapid response by provincial governments and security forces in Narowal, Sialkot, and K-P. Meanwhile, the NDMA, in collaboration with the provincial authorities, continues to distribute relief good including ration to the displaced people. NDMA warns of floods in Sindh riverbeds
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of possible floods in riverbed areas of Sindh after strong floods in all three eastern rivers. As per NDMA, 900,000 to 950,000 cusecs of water will pass the Panjnad Headworks between September 3 and 4. Water flows may slightly come down between 825,000 to 900,000 cusecs in case embankments are breached to divert floodwaters to avoid extreme damage. The official statement of the NDMA said Guddu Barrage is expected to see water flows ranging from 800,000 to 1.1 million cusecs between September 5 and 6, with the lowest range lying between 750,000 to 900,000 cusecs if embankments are breached. Also Read: Indian actions intensified flood crisis in Pakistan, say officials At Sukkur Barrage, water flows of 800,000 to 1.1 million cusecs are expected between September 6 and 7, while Kotri Barrage is likely to witness flows between 800,000 to one million cusecs from September 8 to 9. As per NDMA, the total flow could reach up to 1.2 million cusecs, potentially creating an extremely high-level flood scenario for the riverbed communities and low-lying areas of Sindh from September 12 to 13. The authority also cautioned that floodwaters could damage agricultural land, nearby settlements, villages, and infrastructure. Hence, the authorities have been directed to take immediate preventive measures. K-P doubles flood victim compensation packages
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a substantial increase in compensation packages for victims of recent floods, pledging swift and transparent financial support to families who lost loved ones, sustained injuries, or suffered property damage. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, in a video statement on Thursday, said the provincial government had doubled the death compensation from Rs1 million to Rs2 million per victim. The compensation for injured persons has been raised from Rs250,000 to Rs500,000. Owners of completely destroyed houses will now receive Rs1 million instead of Rs400,000, while partially damaged houses will be compensated at Rs300,000, up from Rs100,000. For the first time, shopkeepers whose businesses were destroyed will receive Rs500,000, while shop owners whose establishments were inundated will be paid Rs100,000 for cleaning expenses. He further announced that compensation would also be provided for losses to crops, orchards, and livestock, with details to be finalized by the Relief Department. To facilitate these payments, the government has already released Rs6.5 billion to the Relief Department and will soon issue an additional Rs5 billion, making the total allocation Rs11.5 billion. Highlighting the scale of destruction, Gandapur said that cloudbursts and torrential rains since August 15 have left 406 people dead and 245 others injured across the province. The hardest-hit districts include Buner, Swat, Shangla, Bajaur, Mansehra, and Swabi. Floods and landslides destroyed 664 houses and damaged 2,431 more. Infrastructure losses were also immense, with 511 roads, 77 bridges, and 2,123 shops affected. The CM said the provincial government responded immediately after receiving reports of the first cloudburst in Bajaur on August 15. Relevant departments, rescue teams, and district administrations were mobilized without delay. “Timely response by officials and rescue workers saved thousands of lives,” he added. According to the CM, a total of 5,566 people were rescued during operations carried out with the help of 176 vehicles and boats and more than 2,000 rescue personnel. Relief activities began immediately after rescue efforts, with 119,000 people provided cooked meals and 125 trucks carrying essential relief goods dispatched to affected areas. He said 136 roads and 65 bridges had already been restored, while 70 medical camps were set up in flood-hit regions to provide healthcare. Gandapur shared details of the financial assistance distributed to date. Families of 350 deceased persons have been paid a total of Rs654 million. Compensation worth Rs195 million has been given to 18 injured individuals, while the verification process for others is under way. In addition, 4,432 beneficiaries have received Rs15,000 each under food stamps, amounting to Rs665 million. Payments of Rs280 million have been made to shopkeepers, while Rs790 million has been disbursed to affected households. Further compensation worth more than Rs2.3 billion will be distributed soon. The CM stressed that compensation will be provided in a transparent and hassle-free manner through a digital payment system. For children who lost parents in the floods, special accounts are being opened by deputy commissioners to ensure timely payments.

Power tariff likely to slash by Rs1.69 per unit
Power consumers across the country are likely to get Rs1.69 per unit relief in their September bills under the monthly fuel charges adjustment (FCA), Express News reported. National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) Sindh member Rafiq Sheikh on Wednesday reviewed the Central Power Purchasing Agency’s (CPPA-G) request, which, if approved, would provide Rs23 billion relief to consumers. The reduction, however, will apply for one month only and will exclude lifeline, protected, prepaid consumers, and electric vehicle charging stations. During the session, Nepra expressed strong displeasure over the rise in electrocution incidents during July’s heavy rains. The authority noted that 11 people lost their lives in a single month due to accidents, including six deaths in the Islamabad Electric Supply Company’s (IESCO) region alone. Sheikh warned of imposing maximum penalties on distribution companies. However, he lamented that utilities often obtain stay orders from courts against such fines. Nepra confirmed that the Ministry of Energy had conveyed the Economic Coordination Committee’s instructions to charge the same FCA from K-Electric consumers so that a uniform tariff policy could be maintained. The regulator said it heard all stakeholders and will issue a detailed decision after further scrutiny of the submitted data.

PTI eyes fresh talks with govt sans Imran's consent
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has once again begun weighing the option of entering negotiations with the government — potentially even without the explicit consent of party founder Imran Khan, sources revealed on Wednesday. According to insiders, the move is primarily aimed at securing Khan’s release and addressing a slew of pending legal cases against him. Some PTI parliamentarians have proposed re-engaging with ruling coalition members, suggesting talks could proceed regardless of Khan’s approval, though the wider party consensus remains in favour of formal negotiations. The matter is expected to surface during the upcoming National Assembly session, with the government’s side likely to include National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Sanaullah, Naveed Qamar, and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had earlier extended an offer of talks to the PTI. A senior PTI leader, requesting anonymity, argued that political disputes could only be resolved through dialogue, warning that “resignations or boycotts will not solve the crisis.” He further claimed that some within the party were not fully apprising Khan of ground realities, which he said was undermining reconciliation efforts. Sources stressed that “serious negotiations with the government are crucial” not only for Khan’s release but also for tackling the party’s broader political challenges.

Education minister launches degree verification portal
Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Tuesday inaugurated the Customer Care Desk (CCD) Portal for certificate verification, developed by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC). The portal aims to provide students with easier access to certificate verification and related services through an online system. Speaking on the occasion, IBCC Executive Director Ghulam Ali Mallah said that students can now verify their academic certificates online via the Customer Care Desk, while also tracking the process through QR codes. He added that students across the country will be able to lodge complaints or access services through the 24/7 desk. “Parents and students from anywhere in the world can email IBCC’s Customer Care Desk, and every email will be responded to within 24 hours,” Mallah said. He noted that the portal had been running in beta mode for six months and has now been made fully public. Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Siddiqui said provinces hold autonomy over education under the 18th Amendment, but IBCC was established to provide coordination and ensure a uniform standard of education across the country. He said the ministry would soon meet with provincial representatives to devise a framework for cooperation. “Today, we have crossed a milestone in Pakistan’s history. With technology, students will no longer have to face hardships in getting their certificates verified,” the minister remarked. Siddiqui also said that the final report on the recent Cambridge exam paper leak would be made public once completed. Later, the minister planted a sapling as part of a plantation drive at IBCC.

Pakistan, Iran military chiefs vow joint action to secure borders
Pakistan and Iran’s military chiefs have pledged to step up efforts to eliminate terrorism and secure their common border, the Iranian embassy in Islamabad said on Tuesday. Echoing the call for securing common borders, Munir said the two countries must “jointly turn the Pakistan-Iran border into a border of friendship, brotherhood, and economic development.” In May, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif undertook a two-day visit to Iran as part of his regional tour to friendly nations, aimed at expressing gratitude for their support during the conflict with India. During the visit, he met with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Pezeshkian. The discussions focused on strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations, with particular emphasis on enhancing trade and regional connectivity. Both sides also addressed broader regional issues and acknowledged Iran’s efforts to promote peace during the war imposed on Pakistan by India. Earlier in August, Iranian President Massud Pezeshkian travelled to Pakistan on his first official visit since assuming the office and following the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June. Read More: Pakistan, Iran set $10b trade target Pakistan rolled out red-carpet welcome to President Pezeshkian and PM Shehbaz personally received him at the Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi, in a rare gesture signalling not just a protocol but Pakistan's intent to deepen ties with the neighbouring country. Pakistan and Iran agreed to increase their bilateral trade from current $3 billion to $10 billion in the talks between the visiting Iranian president and the prime minister, in a move suggesting the shifting geostrategic dynamics bringing the two neighbours closer. The formal talks were held at the Prime Minister House with focus on multiple issues ranging from bilateral ties to the current regional and international developments. According to the PM office, the two leaders held a one-on-one meeting, which was followed by delegation-level talks. They discussed key initiatives to boost trade, including enhancing quotas for rice, fruits, and meat exports, activating border markets, removing non-tariff barriers, and promoting barter trade.

150-year-old banyan tree restored at Qasr-e-Naz in Karachi
A 150-year-old banyan tree at Qasr-e-Naz on Club Road, which had collapsed during the recent monsoon rains and strong winds, has been successfully restored and replanted through a joint effort of the Sindh Forest Department and Sindh Wildlife officials. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah hailed the restoration as “a vital step in environmental protection” and “a living symbol connecting past and present.” The rescue and rehabilitation process lasted nearly 10 hours over two days, involving heavy machinery, cranes, and the use of special biological treatments. According to Chief Conservator Javed Mahar, the tree’s roots had been damaged due to water scarcity, fungus, and termite attacks. Instead of cutting it down, experts decided to carefully replant and revive the historic tree at a nearby suitable location. During the operation, surrounding neem and kachnar trees were also relocated to safer spots. Deputy Conservator Sindh Wildlife, Mumtaz Soomro, said the banyan was not merely a tree but an “ecological heritage.” He noted that while fallen trees are often cut and discarded, their preservation can play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. The chief minister praised the efforts of the forest and wildlife teams, stating that the initiative was not only about saving a tree but about protecting history, biodiversity, and ensuring a greener, healthier future for the coming generations. He urged youth to recognize the importance of historic trees as “living symbols of heritage and environmental resilience.” Qasr-e-Naz is a government-owned guest lodge situated in the Civil Lines area of Karachi. It primarily serves as accommodation for federal and provincial government officers and parliamentarians during official visits. The facility spans approximately 2.6 acres, with about 0.92 acres of built-up area comprising 64 single rooms and 37 family suites, and the rest serving as open land.

India bypassed IWT by sharing flood data via diplomatic channel: FO
Pakistan has raised objections after India bypassed the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) by sending flood warnings through diplomatic channels instead of the Indus Water Commission, the designated forum under the 1960 accord. According to the Foreign Office on Monday, India’s High Commission in Islamabad conveyed flood data on Sunday, marking the first such exchange since New Delhi unilaterally suspended the treaty following the Pahalgam attack in April. In a letter seen by The Express Tribune, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad informed Pakistan of a “high flood” in River Tawi, Jammu, at 10:00 am on August 24. The Foreign Office later confirmed the development but questioned India’s method of communication. “On 24 August 2025, India communicated flood warnings through diplomatic channels, rather than through the Indus Waters Commission as required under the IWT. India is obligated to fully comply with all provisions of the Treaty,” read the FO statement. It added that India’s unilateral suspension of the treaty constitutes a “serious violation of international law” with potential consequences for regional peace and stability. Read More: India alerts Pakistan about upcomsing flood threat A senior Pakistani official told The Express Tribune that India appeared to be deliberately omitting reference to the treaty to establish a “new normal” in its dealings with Pakistan. An unnamed Indian official, quoted by Reuters, said the data was shared on “humanitarian grounds” and not under treaty obligations. Following the alert, Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued warnings for Gujrat and Sialkot districts, cautioning that rising waters in River Tawi could affect Chenab’s flow. District administrations were directed to activate flood monitoring and emergency response systems. Signed in 1960 with World Bank mediation, the Indus Waters Treaty allocates the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab—to Pakistan, while India controls the eastern rivers—Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—subject to conditions that it does not significantly alter western flows. The Permanent Court of Arbitration recently reaffirmed that India cannot unilaterally walk away from the treaty and must strictly comply with provisions governing run-of-the-river projects. Islamabad has repeatedly warned that any attempt by New Delhi to obstruct Pakistan’s due share of water would be viewed as an act of aggression.

PHC stay: PTI delays opposition leader picks
The PTI Political Committee has decided to postpone the appointment of the new leaders of the opposition in the National Assembly and the Senate for now in view of the stay order issued by the Peshawar High Court (PHC). In a meeting held on Sunday to review the current political situation, the political committee agreed that Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub will continue to hold their respective positions in the Senate and the National Assembly as opposition leaders. An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad on July 31 convicted over hundred PTI leaders and workers including Shibli and Omar in a May 9, 2023 case, sentencing them to ten years in prison. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), taking suo motu notice of the conviction, disqualified the PTI leaders on August 5. Later, on August 7, the National Assembly speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, issued a notification de-notifying Omar and declaring the seat vacant. The Senate Secretariat on August 8 also issued a notification, stating that Faraz's disqualification on August 5 had resulted in the loss of both his Senate membership and his position as leader of the opposition in the upper house. The PTI challenged these notifications. The PHC on August 12 stopped the upper and lower houses of parliament from appointing new leaders of opposition in view of the conviction, de-seating and de-notification of Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub. A division bench comprising Justice Syed Arshad Ali and Justice Dr Khurshid Iqbal issued this order while hearing petitions filed on behalf of Shibli and Omar by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. The PHC on August 21 extended the stay. According to a statement issued to the media after the meeting, the committee reviewed the current political situation and held consultations on various matters. For the upcoming by-elections, Munazza Fatima was nominated from PP-87 and Ain Ahmad from NA-66, while candidates for the remaining seats will be announced soon. The meeting also noted that the ground realities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab differ significantly. It condemned the "fascist tactics" being used against PTI leaders and workers, terming the arrest of Aleema Khan's sons as the worst example of political victimisation. The police in Punjab provincial capital on August 21 arrested Aleema's son Shahrez Khan. on charges of resorting to acts of vandalism on May 9, 2023. A day later, they also detained her second son, Shershah Khan on the same charges. Both Shahrez and Shershah are nephews of former PM Imran Khan. According to the statement, Advocate Ali Bukhari met Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. During the meeting, the PTI founder emphasized that the legal battle will be fought with full force.

Pakistan Railways unveils Karachi-Lahore bullet train plan
Pakistan Railways has unveiled an ambitious bullet train project between Lahore and Karachi, aiming to slash travel time from nearly 20 hours to just five by 2030. The project forms a pivotal part of the $6.8 billion ML-1 upgrade under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The 1,215-km line is expected to operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h and will include stations in Hyderabad, Multan, and Sahiwal. “The bullet train project is a visionary plan that will revolutionize travel and commerce between Karachi and Lahore,” Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said, as reported by Radio Pakistan. Read: Garbage tax imposed across Punjab “With Chinese technical backing—including China Railway Construction Corporation—we’re reinforcing the backbone of this nation,” Abbasi said, emphasizing the broader economic benefits. The project will feature double-track lines, reconstructed bridges, and modern signalling systems. Beyond commuting improvements, the upgrades are expected to create thousands of jobs, boost regional trade, and elevate Pakistan’s rail freight share from 4% to 20% by 2030. Officials estimate that reducing dependence on road transport will save billions in fuel imports. Earlier this year, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved a separate bullet train initiative between Lahore and Rawalpindi, promising a travel time of only 2.5 hours. The development comes as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is poised to step in where Chinese funding lagged, agreeing to back a $2 billion upgrade of the 500-km Karachi–Rohri rail corridor. Also Read: Rain fatalities toll mounts in K-P with 11 more die in DI Khan, Lower Dir According to sources, this track is key to transporting copper ore from the much-anticipated Reko Diq mine. A consortium led by ADB is expected to formalise the deal later this month, with an international contractor appointed via a competitive bid. In parallel, Pakistan Railways has launched a sweeping digitisation and automation programme nationwide. Upgrades include installing computerised interlocking systems at major junctions like Landhi and Badal Nala, adopting a digital microwave radio system along the Karachi–Lahore route, and deploying Push-to-Talk digital networks across multiple divisions to boost safety and operational coordination.

PBC rejects hike in court fees
The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Saturday rejected the recent increase in court fees, describing it as an attack on the poor's fundamental right to access justice. The decision was taken at a meeting of the PBC Executive Committee chaired by Muhammad Yasin Azad. The council expressed deep concern over amendments to the Supreme Court Rules 2025, strongly opposing the rise in judicial fees and demanding its immediate withdrawal. According to a statement, the PBC said the government had failed to take the Council into confidence before introducing the fee hike. It announced that an All Parties Conference (APC) would be convened in Islamabad on Sept 27, bringing together representatives of political parties and bar associations to discuss the issue. The PBC also condemned a raid by the CTD at the residence of former Justice (retd) Zahoor Ahmed Shahwani, terming it a violation of the Constitution, law, and civil liberties as it was conducted without a search warrant. The Council further denounced the killing of lawyer Mian Asim Kakakhel.

Ex-judge moves court seeking removal of Sindh governor
Former judge Ahmed Ali Gabol has filed a constitutional petition seeking the removal of Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori from office. The petitioner requested the immediate dismissal of Governor Tessori, arguing that he has violated the constitutional oath of impartiality. According to the petition, the governor has promoted politics on an ethnic basis and, while sitting with MQM leadership, has spoken about ethnic and provincial divisions. It further stated that the governor delivered speeches at the Governor House and other venues, in which he allegedly suggested separating Karachi from Sindh. The petition contends that Governor Tessori attempted to incite linguistic hatred by invoking the Urdu-speaking community. Such conduct, it argues, violates Articles 4, 2, 25, and 32 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which guarantee equality and provincial harmony. The petitioner also cited Supreme Court rulings that bar the use of state offices for political agendas. Also Read: PML-N, PPP to jointly contest upcoming by-polls The petition pleads that under Article 101(3) of the Constitution, the President of Pakistan should remove Governor Tessori from office. It maintains that the governorship is a non-political post, but Tessori has been using both his position and the Governor House for the interests of a specific political party. The petition demands that the office of the Sindh Governor be upheld as a symbol of federal unity and provincial harmony. The Federation’s secretary for law and justice, secretary cabinet division, and the principal secretary to the Sindh Governor have been made respondents in the case.

PM directs intensified flood relief efforts in Ghizer
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued special directives regarding the flood situation in Ghizer area of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), caused by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood as hundreds of housed damaged forcing families to flee, Radio Pakistan reported on Saturday. Flash floods struck Roshan valley in Ghizer district of G-B early Friday after a glacier burst, damaging hundreds of houses and forcing hundreds of families to flee, said officials. In an official statement, the prime minister instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and district administration to continue rescue operations with urgency. He expressed his appreciation for the rescue teams and local volunteers, acknowledging their prompt efforts to evacuate residents to safer locations. Read More: Over 100 homes damaged in glacier outburst in G-B’s Ghizer district “I commend the dedication and swift response of all rescue teams and local volunteers who have worked tirelessly to protect lives in the face of this disaster,” PM Shehbaz said. With two more spells of rain forecast in the coming days, the prime minister underscored the need to intensify relief activities. “We must ensure that all affected people are moved to safe places to avoid further casualties,” he added. He further directed all relevant authorities nationwide to remain fully prepared for relief operations, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding, as the forecast predicts additional heavy rains. Highlighting the importance of long-term preventative measures, the premier announced the launch of a national campaign aimed at preventing unauthorized construction near rivers, streams, and natural watercourses. “It is imperative to safeguard our communities by respecting natural waterways and limiting construction in vulnerable areas,” he stated. Addressing the humanitarian aspect of the crisis, he emphasized that it is a national duty to support those affected by the recent rains and floods. “Once immediate rescue and relief operations conclude, we will focus on the rehabilitation of displaced families,” he said. Also Read: K‑P unveils Rs9.45bn damage assessment after floods PM Shehbaz also stressed the necessity of timely provision of medical aid and relief supplies to victims. “Ensuring that medical assistance and essential supplies reach all those in need without delay remains a top priority,” he noted. Additionally, the prime minister instructed the NDMA to maintain close coordination with provincial disaster management authorities regarding flood conditions in areas including Guddu, Sukkur, Ganda Singh Wala, and other regions along the Indus and Sutlej rivers. In a gesture of recognition, Pm Shehbaz praised Wasiyat Khan, a resident of Ghizer, for his courageous act of warning neighbours in advance of the impending floods, which helped save lives. “His bravery in alerting his community exemplifies the spirit of resilience and solidarity we need in these challenging times,” the prime minister remarked. Ghizer, about 200 km from G-B, was among the worst-hit valleys in the recent floods, with at least 10 fatalities reported. A 7-km (4-mile) lake created by a mountain mudslide, is threatening to burst and unleash potentially "catastrophic" floods downstream, officials warned on Saturday. Read More: Shepherd's alert saves entire village in G-B The mud flow descended into the main Ghizer River channel and blocked it completely on Friday, creating the lake in G-B province, the National Disaster Management Authority said. The blockage created a "dam-like structure" that poses a significant threat of bursting, it said in a situation report by its provincial office. The new lake "can cause a catastrophic flood", said Zakir Hussain, director general of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. Four downstream districts - Ghizer, Gilgit, Astore and Diamer - face a serious threat, he told Reuters.

K‑P unveils Rs9.45bn damage assessment after floods
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Communications and Works Department has unveiled a staggering Rs 9.45 billion estimate for repairing roads and bridges damaged by flash floods and heavy rains across the province from August 15 to 22. Relentless rains and flash floods have ravaged Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), leaving at least 393 people dead, 190 injured, and 1,618 houses damaged — including 433 completely destroyed — with Buner reporting the highest toll at 234 fatalities. In a detailed report released on Saturday, the department stated that 331 roads were damaged at 336 locations, with approximately 493 kilometres of road infrastructure rendered unusable due to severe flooding and landslides. Of these, 229 roads have been partially reopened to traffic, while 50 have been fully restored. However, 57 roads remain inaccessible, and full rehabilitation is expected to take time. Also Read: NDMA issues nationwide rain alert from Aug 23 The report added that the restoration of these road networks alone would require an estimated Rs9.45 billion. Meanwhile, the floodwaters also swept away 32 bridges across the province. Only one bridge has been completely reopened for traffic, while 22 are partially operational and nine remain closed. The department has projected that the cost of restoring the damaged bridges will amount to Rs1.12 billion. The most severely affected district was Swat, where 79 roads sustained damage at 80 different points. In total, 43 kilometres of roads were washed away in Swat alone. Restoration efforts in the district have led to three roads being fully reopened, while 75 have been partially cleared. Two roads, however, remain inaccessible. The cost of rehabilitation in Swat has already crossed Rs450 million. In Buner district, 43 roads were damaged, with only four still completely inaccessible. Thirty-nine roads have seen partial restoration. The department stated that more than Rs450 million had already been spent on repair work in the area. In Swabi, 41 roads suffered damage, but 32 of them are yet to be restored to traffic. Officials said rehabilitation efforts are ongoing in all affected regions, with work being prioritised in areas with critical connectivity. Lyari project: NA panel seeks PSDP funding
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Economic Affairs has proposed removing the Lyari Elevated Freight Corridor Project from the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode and including it in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). On Friday, officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA) informed the committee that the project was originally to be completed at a cost of Rs68 billion but delays have led to cost escalation. They said the Lyari Expressway runs along both sides of the Lyari River, and the plan was to divert heavy traffic from the expressway onto this corridor. The purpose of the corridor was to provide a separate road for heavy traffic. A committee member, Javed Hanif Khan, questioned if the Lyari Elevated Freight Corridor project had been dropped. He asked why did projects for Karachi and Sindh always go under the PPP mode. He said heavy traffic enters Karachi even during the day, which is why this project was initiated. "It was only a 1516 km corridor project yet it has been dropped. NHA officials said they had consulted the Sindh government, but the project had not been dropped in the manner suggested. The committee proposed shifting the project from PPP mode to PSDP and also directed that a position paper on the project be submitted by August 26.

PTI to contest by-polls with full force
The political committee of the PTI decided on Thursday to actively contest all upcoming by-elections, resolving not to leave the political arena vacant for the rivals, sources said. The party's core committee met here with Secretary General Salman Akram Raja in the chair. It was decided that the PTI would field candidates in every constituency where seats fell vacant and by-elections would be held. It was also decided that candidate would be nominated with the consent of the disqualified member. The meeting, however, saw sharp differences emerging over the nomination of the replacement for the opposition leaders Omar Ayub in the National Assembly and Shibli Faraz in the Senate, who had been convicted by the courts over May 9, 2023 riots. A message from the PTI founder Imran Khan, sent through Ali Bukhari, stated that if Ayub and Faraz secured relief from the courts, they would continue in their positions; otherwise, Mehmood Achakzai and Senator Azam Swati should be considered for the opposition leaders' posts.

PTI alleges abduction of Imran Khan’s nephew in Lahore raid
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday alleged that men in plain clothes raided the Lahore residence of Aleema Khan, sister of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan, and abducted her son, Shahrez Khan, in what the opposition party described as an unlawful act of intimidation. According to PTI leaders, the raid occurred late Wednesday night when a group of unidentified individuals forcibly entered Aleema Khan’s home. Party officials claimed that household staff were assaulted, family members harassed, and Shahrez was taken from his bedroom in front of his children. PTI’s central information department issued a statement calling the episode “the height of thuggery and oppression,” adding that “even domestic workers were subjected to brutal violence.” محترمہ علیمہ خانم کے بیٹے شاہریز خان کو اغوا کرنے پہ پاکستان تحریک انصاف کا ردعمل: لاہور میں عمران خان کی ہمشیرہ علیمہ خان کے گھر پر سادہ کپڑوں میں ملبوس مسلح افراد کا انکے بیٹے شاہریز خان کا اغوا اور حملہ قابلِ مذمت ہی نہیں بلکہ شرمناک ترین اور بزدلانہ حرکت ہے۔ یہ بدمعاشی اور… pic.twitter.com/nV5kSvhseG — PTI (@PTIofficial) August 21, 2025 Rana Mudassar Umar, a lawyer for PTI, told the media that Shahrez had no political affiliations and faced no registered cases. PTI leaders said the timing of the two episodes demonstrated a deliberate campaign of harassment targeting Imran Khan’s relatives. Senior PTI figures condemned the incident in strong terms.
MQM-P demands disaster-hit status for Karachi, exemption from taxes
In the wake of heavy losses amid torrential rains, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has demanded that Karachi be declared a disaster-hit area and taxes be exempted. MQM-Pakistan leader Dr Farooq Sattar, Syed Aminul Haq, Ali Khurshidi and MPAs held a press conference at the MQM’s temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad on the current situation in the metropolis on Wednesday. Talking to the media, Sattar said that the government's callousness has restricted the citizens to their homes, adding the Pakistan People’s Party-led provincial and city governments should admit their failures. He claimed that MQM-P leadership and activists remained on ground to help citizens who were stranded on the clogged roads for hours. The sense of insecurity among the citizens was seen to a greater extent during the rain spell, said the MQM-P leader, adding if a just system is established in Karachi, it is not a big deal to maintain a proper drainage system. He questioned how long the PPP will deceive people of Karachi with lame excuses. Despite usurping the resources and powers of the province, the provincial government has left the citizens of Karachi helpless, he said. He demanded that Karachi be declared a disaster-hit area and it be exempted from all federal and provincial taxes. Sattar said Karachi has been grappling with host of issues despite numerous resources, adding the city's drainage system can withstand 400mm of rain if drains are properly cleaned. He claimed that the Sindh government had collected Rs22 trillion in 17 years, but it did not spend even Rs22. “Where are Jamaat-e-Islami and PTI in the whole situation?,” he asked. The MQM-P leader said the rain emergency organisation is dysfunctional despite several advisories of heavy rains in the city. The provincial government has practically separated Karachi from Sindh through its apathy towards the problems of the city. He further questioned on proceeds received from the NDMA as rain relief fund.

Govt launches crackdown on illegal foreigners
Authorities have decided to launch an immediate crackdown against illegal foreigners in the federal capital and four adjoining districts — Rawalpindi, Attock, Murree and Haripur — as part of a plan to declare them “safe zones.” Under the plan, data of illegal residents will be compiled, their access to mobile SIMs blocked, and the issuance of stamp papers for property transactions or other financial dealings prohibited. Deputy commissioners and district police chiefs of all five districts have been directed to submit weekly progress reports. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of the special task force, chaired by CDA chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa at CDA headquarters. Senior officials from the interior ministry, National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Afghan Commissionerate, and district administrations of the five districts attended. The meeting resolved to take strict and immediate action against foreigners residing without valid visas. A centralised database will be developed containing details such as identities, residential addresses, and other relevant information to prevent their re-settlement in the future. Randhawa instructed officials to strengthen coordination and data-sharing with FIA, Nadra, and other agencies. He further directed strict enforcement of tenancy laws, with action against unregistered foreign tenants living in houses or hotels. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has also been told not to issue SIMs to foreigners without valid visas. It was agreed that illegal foreigners would also be barred from property transactions through stamp papers. Randhawa stressed that the government is determined to ensure security and stability by enforcing the law against illegal migrants, with all agencies working together for a permanent solution.

Twin cities see sharp rise in seasonal ailments
Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are facing a surge in seasonal illnesses, as the unusual combination of monsoon rains, humidity, and lingering heat has triggered a sharp rise in infections across the twin cities. Cases of throat infections, flu, coughs, colds, allergies, ear–nose–throat complaints, and fever-related conditions have risen significantly. Reports of gastric and abdominal disorders are also becoming more common. Allied hospitals in Rawalpindi are seeing long queues of patients suffering from such ailments, including men, women, and children. Within the past 24 hours alone, a total of 3,160 patients were treated at the three allied hospitals — Holy Family Hospital, District Headquarters Hospital, and Benazir Bhutto General Hospital. All were provided medical treatment and medication before being discharged. Poor sanitation, particularly in low-lying areas where rainwater collects, has further exacerbated the situation. Streets filled with sewage waste and debris have created breeding grounds for disease. Private neighbourhood clinics are also profiting from the surge in seasonal illnesses. Doctors at these facilities are reportedly administering glucose drips to patients with gastric complaints upon arrival, often at considerable cost. A standard prescription typically includes an injection, coloured vials (yellow, green, and red), along with capsules and tablets, for which patients are charged around Rs450. Where a drip is given, fees range from Rs1,200 to Rs1,500. Ear infections, nasal congestion, and allergies are affecting both men and women, while young children are proving especially vulnerable to throat, stomach, and ear-related illnesses. Doctors caution that cold drinks exacerbate throat problems, and unhygienic street food further heightens health risks. Dr Inayat, Deputy Medical Superintendent of BBH, has advised citizens to exercise particular care during this seasonal transition. He recommended that people avoid chilled water, cold drinks, and energy beverages; refrain from excessive ice cream and overripe fruits; drink herbal tea regularly; use face masks consistently; avoid overly spicy or oily food; and consume lemonade and sweet foods in moderation; wear full-sleeved shirts and trousers in the evenings to guard against dengue and common mosquitoes; avoid shorts or half-sleeved clothing in open green spaces; add onions, lemons, coriander, and ginger to meals; and drink lukewarm water with meals and as part of a daily routine for better health.

Naqvi says agencies had advance intel, footage of downed Indian jets
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday praised Pakistan’s intelligence agencies for their critical role during the recent conflict with India, claiming they had early access to enemy plans and even obtained video footage of six Indian aircraft being shot down. The recent confrontation between the two neighbouring countries, triggered by the Pahalgam attack, marked one of the most serious escalations in decades, pushing the nuclear-armed rivals to the brink of full-scale war. The conflict resulted in civilian casualties on both sides before diplomatic efforts managed to defuse tensions. During the exchange, the Pakistan Air Force shot down six Indian aircraft, including a French-made Rafale fighter jet. A senior French intelligence official later confirmed the loss of at least one Rafale—marking the aircraft’s first known combat downing. Also Read: Monsoon rains trigger widespread flooding across Punjab Speaking at a seminar organised by the Professor Waris Mir Foundation at Aiwan-e-Iqbal, Naqvi said, “Our intelligence agencies’ role was so important… we knew whatever they planned, what aircraft they would use.” He added, “Within minutes, we received video footage of all six planes which were shot down.” کچھ لوگ ہماری ایجنسیوں کو برا بھلا کہتے ہیں! انھیں کی وجہ سے ہمیں بھارت کی ہر نقل و حرکت کی خبر تھی، وزیر داخلہ محسن نقوی نے پہلی دفعہ کھل کر بڑی باتیں کر دیں#ExpressNews #BreakingNews #MohsinNaqvi #PakvsIndia #PakIndiaWar #ISI #Intelligence #PAF #PakistanAirForce #Rafale #IAF… pic.twitter.com/4PZoarpIur — Express News (@ExpressNewsPK) August 17, 2025 The minister revealed that intelligence agencies received detailed information about India’s plans well in advance, including sensitive intelligence and operational documents. “We used to have every single detail of India’s decisions and papers in advance. Later, when their aircraft were shot down, it was decided that until we had evidence, we would not announce how many planes had been downed. We needed field proof—and believe me, within minutes, the evidence was with us. We have videos of six Indian aircraft that were shot down.” Naqvi attributed part of Pakistan’s success during the conflict to divine intervention. “India fired seven missiles at one of our major bases, which contained valuable assets. Everyone was worried, but not a single missile landed inside the base—some fell before reaching, some outside, and some to the side,” he recounted. He added that when Pakistan retaliated, its missiles struck an Indian oil storage depot without causing civilian casualties. “This was purely Allah’s help,” he said. Naqvi recalled a meeting with a visiting Saudi delegation that included military and government officials. The Field Marshal, he said, told them, “India is like a shining Mercedes, but we are like a dumper truck loaded with stones. Now imagine what happens when the two collide.” Highlighting the unique unity within Pakistan’s leadership, Naqvi said, “For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the Army, Air Force, and Navy devised a joint strategy and fought the war under one plan.” He contrasted this with India’s fractured command structure, where military chiefs reportedly operated independently. Read: PM deploys ministers to oversee K-P flood relief as toll hits 323 Naqvi also named Ajit Doval and Amit Shah as the true masterminds behind the Indian government’s escalation. “These are the two men behind it all, and they will drown India as well as Modi,” he warned. He emphasised domestic political unity amid the crisis: “On Pakistan’s side, all political parties stood united... everyone was in contact and supportive.” According to Naqvi, Pakistani leaders outperformed the Indian delegation’s attempts to lobby internationally, noting, “Our PPP Chairman outweighed them.” The minister also accused India of sponsoring terrorism within Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, and claimed India used the war to suppress Kashmiris. He commended the resilience shown by the Prime Minister and national leadership in responding firmly, saying they defied pressure not to retaliate. The seminar also featured addresses by Senate Chairman Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani and Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan.
