OGDCL announces gas discovery in Khairpur, Sindh

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) on Friday announced a significant gas discovery from the Sehto-1 well in Sindh’s Khairpur district, offering a potential boost amid the ongoing energy crisis. According to a company spokesperson, the well is currently producing 17.2 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd). Drilling operations at the site commenced in December 2025, with gas encountered at a depth of 3,870 metres, the spokesperson added. The discovery is expected to contribute to easing the country’s energy shortfall and help reduce reliance on imported fuel, the company said. The discussion underscored the need for a coordinated response to mitigate risks arising from rising fuel costs, with participants stressing alignment between economic management and energy planning. Authorities also highlighted the importance of reducing fuel consumption through public awareness campaigns, promoting public transport and encouraging shared mobility to ease pressure on imports and foreign reserves. Separately, amid a deepening global oil crisis triggered by the Strait of Hormuz disruption and rising geopolitical tensions, Pakistan is increasingly pivoting towards renewable and alternative energy sources to safeguard its energy security. Backed significantly by China under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Pakistan has already developed around 5,000MW of clean energy capacity, including wind, solar and hydropower projects — a shift seen as critical to reducing dependence on volatile global oil markets and ensuring long-term energy stability.
