The arrested activists were detained from the jurisdictions of nine police stations after the Murree tragedy and had been held in Adiala Jail, Attock Jail and Jhelum Jail since their arrests. The courts directed that each worker submit Rs100,000 in surety bonds for their release. Following the court orders, the process of releasing the workers has begun.

'India is behind these attacks': Naqvi vows to go after every terrorist in Balochistan violence

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday directly held India responsible for the recent attacks in Balochistan, alleging that New Delhi was involved in planning and backing the incidents and vowing to expose what he described as its role before the international community. At least 92 terrorists were killed as security forces fought off a series of coordinated attacks at multiple locations across Balochistan today, with 15 security personnel also martyred in combat. With the latest fatalities, the number of terrorists killed over the past two days has risen to 133. The brazen, in-synch attacks were carried out by hordes of heavily-armed terrorists in 12 cities, including Quetta, Noshki, Dalbandin, Kalat, Gwadar, Pasni, Tump and Mastung. Security sources said “Fitna al-Hindustan” — a blanket term used by officials for outlawed Baloch terrorist groups — was behind the deadly assaults, which came a day after the military claimed it had killed 41 terrorists in two targeted operations in Panjgur and Shaban areas of Balochistan. In a video statement released alongside Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, the interior minister said the manner in which the attacks were planned and carried out, as well as the response by the police, Frontier Corps (FC) and the Pakistan Army, reflected the scale and seriousness of the threat. “Behind every attack, there is a story. The way our soldiers defended themselves and the way the terrorists were hunted down shows that none of them managed to escape,” he said, adding that the attackers had been neutralised so that no one could get away. Naqvi praised the role of CM Bugti, describing him as courageous and saying his leadership from the front had boosted the morale of security forces. The interior minister paid tribute to the FC, police and the army for confronting what he termed terrorism, saying it was important for the world to understand that these were not “ordinary terrorists” while reiterating his allegation that India was behind the attacks. “India is behind these attacks. I can say with certainty that India planned them along with these terrorists,” he said, adding that authorities would pursue all those involved and leave no one unaccountable. He said that the authorities had almost all the information about the masterminds of the attack and the locations from where they are operating. "We will expose them to the world — the face with which they meet people publicly and the face with which they support terrorists," Naqvi said. He alleged that India was providing financial support to militants as well as assistance in planning and strategy. Still, he expressed confidence that such efforts would be defeated, as they had been in the past. Reaffirming the resolve to eliminate terrorism, Naqvi said the federation and the provinces would act together against militancy. Referring to CM Bugti, he said the chief minister would be able to state that terrorism in the province had been decisively dealt with. CM Bugti thanked the interior minister and said that upon learning of the incident, he had immediately travelled to Quetta, where a high-level meeting was held and visits were made to the Combined Military Hospital to inquire after the injured. بلوچستان میں دہشتگردی کے واقعات، وفاقی وزیر داخلہ محسن نقوی کا کور ہیڈکوارٹرز کوئٹہ کا دورہ وزیر داخلہ محسن نقوی کو فتنہ الہندوستان کے دہشتگرد حملوں اور مجموعی سیکیورٹی صورتحال کے حوالے سے بریفنگ دی گئی۔ بریفنگ میں وزیر اعلیٰ بلوچستان سرفراز بگٹی اور کور کمانڈر بلوچستان بھی شریک… pic.twitter.com/lSPrsAxxYT — PTV News (@PTVNewsOfficial) January 31, 2026 He said the operation had been completed, though further details were still being compiled. Condemning the killing of women and children belonging to a Baloch family in Khuzdar, he said terrorists had entered a labour colony in Gwadar and carried out the attack. The chief minister praised the courage displayed by the FC, police and army, saying the response of the security forces had been commendable. “Their (the terrorists’) morale was falling; they tried to carry out such a large operation only to boost their morale and attempted to increase its size, but the lethality was very low,” he added. Paying tribute to the martyrs and veterans, he said that the rebuttal and response given by the security forces was superb, and added that even ten such attacks cannot weaken our resolve — whether it is the federal government, the provincial government, the armed forces, or the police — we are in very high spirits. “We have just come after meeting the injured; the spirit I saw in them, and the spirit I saw after meeting the families of the martyrs — no one can even bend a single hair of this country.” The two had earlier attended the funeral prayers of police personnel who were martyred in Saturday's attacks.

PTI rejects PIMS report, calls for Imran Khan’s treatment at Shaukat Khanum

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday rejected the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) report on party founder Imran Khan’s eye treatment, demanding that he be treated at Shaukat Khanum Hospital and that his family be allowed to meet him. PIMS had confirmed a day earlier that Imran was taken to the hospital late on the night between last Saturday and Sunday, where, after his consent was obtained, he was administered an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection to treat a right central retinal vein occlusion. PTI Central Secretary of Information Sheikh Waqas Akram, speaking on Express News programme 'Centre Stage', said the party did not accept any PIMS report. “Treatment of the PTI founder should be done at Shaukat Khanum, and the founder’s family should be allowed to meet him. Our response is that these reports and vlogs should stop. We will not be satisfied with these actions,” he stated. He recalled that during the PTI government, when PML-N President Nawaz Sharif was ill, Imran had said political differences should be set aside and that no one’s life should be politicised. Akram emphasised that public emotions should not be exploited. “We say that the PTI founder should be treated at Shaukat Khanum, not PIMS,” he added. He questioned the relevance of objections to an examination by the founder’s own doctor. “Were meetings with the founder not arranged before? Now we are being lectured about jail manuals and laws,” he said. Responding to National Assembly opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s statement that news about Imran’s illness had been exaggerated, Akram said, “We respect Achakzai’s opinion. It is possible that he has information that we do not have.” Read: Imran 'treated smoothly' for retinal condition at PIMS, executive director confirms Following a political committee meeting on Thursday, Achakzai had said that the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Aain Pakistan had already announced that February 8 would be observed as a black day. He added that the issue of Imran’s health was being raised to divert workers from this objective. “I assert that Imran Khan’s health is not as bad as it has been portrayed through propaganda,” he had said. Akram said that until meetings with the family or Dr Asim Yousaf take place, voters and party workers would not feel reassured. “Achakzai should take the founder to Dr Asim himself,” he added. He said that while Achakzai may have some information, concerns from ordinary party workers or the family could not come from anyone else. Regarding a meeting between PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Akram said the interaction had not been very fruitful. “Were there any tangible results from the meeting? Did the family or party leaders get to meet the founder?” he asked. Separately, he condemned attacks carried out by terrorists of banned organisations in Balochistan, saying terrorists should not be allowed any space under any circumstances. He added that the PTI had convened a meeting to discuss the situation in the province. “We condemn terrorism, and action should be taken against terrorists. They must be dealt with firmly. What is the law-and-order situation in Balochistan? We will give an official response on the situation there,” he said. Also Read: Imran's consent obtained for eye procedure: PIMS He urged the government to clarify steps taken to secure the area and outline its counterterrorism strategy, stressing that political differences should not overshadow the need to safeguard the country. “Political differences aside, terrorists should not be given any space. The security of the State of Pakistan is paramount,” he said. Addressing recent controversies over an audio attributed to him, Akram said, “There is nothing controversial in my audio.” He dismissed claims that he had blamed Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, saying the matter had already been clarified and the propaganda had failed. “We support Sohail Afridi because the PTI founder appointed him as chief minister,” he added. He further said that while the party supported CM Afridi, it could still discuss matters concerning him internally. “Internal discussions were taking place. If there had been any wrongdoing, it would have been addressed on a public forum. People simply exaggerated the matter. The explanation given by Party Chairman Barrister Gohar regarding my audio is correct,” he said.

K-P CM Sohail Afridi announces shutter-down strike on February 8

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Khan Afridi on Saturday announced a nationwide shutdown on February 8 to protest the alleged theft of the people's mandate in the general elections and to demand the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. In fiery speeches delivered during a street movement tour in Swabi district, including at Shewa Adda, Topi, and Anbar, Afridi called for a complete shutter-down strike across Pakistan. He urged citizens to keep all shops, markets, businesses, trucks, rickshaws, CNG pumps, and other commercial activities closed for the day. “On February 8, stay home. Nothing should move," he said, framing the action as a peaceful demonstration under the banner of protecting the Constitution. صوابی' وزیر اعلیٰ خیبرپختونخوا محمد سہیل آفریدی کا امن چوک میں اسٹریٹ موومنٹ ریلی کے شرکاء سے جارہانہ خطاب ' عوامی سونامی سڑکوں پر موجود ' عمران خان کے حق میں نعرہ بازی #سٹریٹ_مومنٹ_خیبرپختونخوا pic.twitter.com/4gzuuLQmtR — ikram Khatana (@ikramkhatana75) January 31, 2026 Afridi emphasised that the one-day protest centres on securing Imran’s freedom. “We will secure his release and make him prime minister,” he said, adding that public support remained the party's greatest strength. He accused the federal government of violating the Constitution and law by stealing the PTI’s mandate in the February 8, 2024, elections. The K-P chief minister highlighted concerns over Imran’s health, alleging that an eye operation was performed “in the darkness of night” without informing his family or personal doctors. Requests for meetings with Imran by his relatives and physicians have been repeatedly denied, he claimed, despite PTI leaders’ protests, including sit-ins outside Adiala Jail and the Supreme Court. Afridi dismissed intimidation attempts, stating he was unafraid and rejecting accusations labelling him a “smuggler”. He referenced the Tirah operation as an effort to turn Pakhtuns against him, but asserted that the street movement had already disrupted the government’s nights. Read: Federal govt terms Khyber jirga a ‘charge sheet’ against K-P govt, seeks apology “This time, we are fully prepared to take to the field and change the system and destiny of the country,” he warned, urging all Pakistanis to ready themselves. He praised the visible passion and fervour in people’s eyes, claiming it surpassed anything seen in his 18 years of political experience. “The nation is honourable, and so is your chief minister,” Afridi said, vowing that those who tried to corner PTI would find no place to hide once the public sought justice. The announcement aligns with broader opposition calls for protests on the second anniversary of the 2024 polls, which PTI alleges were rigged. Afridi stressed unity, challenging other political parties to mobilise crowds and join the cause for Imran’s release. He recounted spending days and nights protesting outside Adiala jail and the Supreme Court without being granted access to Imran, reinforcing his determination: “No one can stop us this time; the hands tied with weak threads will break free.”

Flaw sinks PTI reference against Abro

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro on Friday received legal relief after the Senate chairman dismissed a disqualification reference filed against him, ruling it non-maintainable on technical grounds, despite allegations that he violated party discipline by voting in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. According to parliamentary sources, the reference was rejected because it was signed by the PTI's parliamentary leader instead of the party head, which is a procedural requirement under the Constitution's defection clause. As a result, the reference was deemed defective and was dismissed without being forwarded to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Under the defection provisions of Article 63-A, a disqualification reference must carry the signature of the party head. According to sources, the failure to meet this mandatory requirement rendered the reference technically flawed, leading the Senate chairman to drop the case. Earlier this month, PTI had moved a reference seeking Abro's disqualification for allegedly defying the party line by voting in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. PTI Senator Ali Zafar had publicly confirmed the move, writing on X: "Saifullah Abro went against party line by voting in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, for which a reference for his disqualification has been filed." The reference, submitted by Zafar, invoked Article 63-A of the Constitution, which deals with disqualification on the grounds of defection. "The declaration is being submitted for onward reference to the chief election commissioner for laying the same before the election commission in accordance with the said Article 63-A," the reference, dated January 1, said. It stated that a PTI meeting was held before the vote on the amendment, in which it was "explicitly decided and communicated to all PTI senators in writing" that they were to oppose and not vote in favour of any bill relating to the amendment. The direction was also issued formally by Ali Zafar to all PTI senators, including Abro. "The record confirms that this direction was properly conveyed to him and that he was fully aware of it," the reference added. The reference further said the instructions were also widely published in the media. However, despite these directions, Abro voted in favour of the amendment twice, first on November 10, 2025, when the Senate initially passed the bill, and again on November 13, 2025, when the House reconsidered it after changes. The reference stated that at both instances, Abro voted contrary to the "clear, unanimous and duly communicated direction" of the PTI and its parliamentary leadership.

NEPRA seeks input on new net-metering law

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has initiated the formal process for introducing new solar net-metering regulations by scheduling a public hearing on the draft Prosumer Regulations 2025, inviting stakeholders and the general public to submit their views. The authority has fixed the application for a hearing and decided to hold a public consultation on the proposed regulations, which aim to govern consumers who both produce and consume electricity through solar systems. The public hearing will be held on February 6, and NEPRA has invited all stakeholders and citizens to present their opinions. A copy of the draft Prosumer Regulations 2025 has been made available on NEPRA's official website for public review. NEPRA also held a public hearing on a request filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) on Thursday. The CPPA told NEPRA that national electricity consumption rose by 22 per cent compared to the same period last year, mainly due to higher demand from industrial and agricultural sectors.

Imran's personal physician flags possible underlying medical condition behind eye issue

Former prime minister Imran Khan’s personal physician, Dr Asim Yousaf, expressed serious concern on Friday over the health of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, saying there may be an underlying medical condition behind his reported eye problem. Imran has been imprisoned since August 2023, currently serving a sentence at Adiala Jail in a £190 million corruption case. In addition, he faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the protests of May 9, 2023. The PTI has expressed concern in recent days over Imran's health, alleging that jail authorities and the government were obstructing treatment for a “serious eye condition” and demanding immediate medical care. Opposition leaders also raised the issue and protested against reports that Imran was transferred to a hospital without informing his family or the party leadership. The government since confirmed that the former prime minister was briefly taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for medical treatment. In a video message, Dr Yousaf — who also serves as chief medical officer at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital — said that for several days, rumours had been circulating across Pakistan and abroad regarding problems with Imran Imran’s eye. “Two days ago, government sources confirmed that Khan indeed had an issue with his eye, and on Saturday — that is, six days ago — he was taken to a government hospital in Islamabad where some treatment was done on his eye,” he said. Read More: Family to decide whether Imran's treatment 'satisfactory' or not: PTI's Salman Akram Raja Dr Yousaf added that, unfortunately, no further details were shared regarding the nature of the condition. “We do not know what exactly happened to his eye, what tests were conducted, or what treatment was given. So far, it has not been clarified what the nature of the disease was,” he said. Terming the situation serious, he said the condition required expert medical care. “Every eye doctor cannot treat this. Only specialists with sub-specialty training and experience in retinal diseases usually manage such cases,” he said, adding that the PIMS hospital did not have doctors with this specific expertise. سابق وزیراعظم عمران خان کے دیرینہ ذاتی معالج اور شوکت خانم ہسپتال کے چیف میڈیکل آفیسر ڈاکٹر عاصم یوسف کا عمران خان کی صحت کے حوالے سے خصوصی بیان۔#FreeImranKhan pic.twitter.com/if9VLqwxOc — PTI (@PTIofficial) January 30, 2026 He further noted that such eye conditions were often linked to underlying health issues, including high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol levels, autoimmune disorders, or a hypercoagulable state — a condition in which the blood clots excessively and inappropriately within blood vessels. He said that appropriate investigations and treatment for these conditions were also necessary. Dr Yousaf said he received a call from PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, who informed him that permission might be granted by Thursday night to meet and examine the former prime minister. Acting on this, he contacted Lahore-based eye surgeon Dr Khurram Azam, who has received specialised training in retinal diseases in the UK, and both travelled to Adiala Jail. Read: Imran's 'hospital admission' worries PTI “At 11pm we reached there, but unfortunately we were not allowed, and we could not examine Khan,” he said, adding that they returned after it became clear that no meeting would take place. Dr Yousaf also refuted circulating social media claims alleging mistreatment by the jail administration, including reports that they had been made to stand in the cold for 12 hours. “None of that happened,” he said, clarifying that neither he nor others had stated that the PTI founder required prolonged hospital admission. “However, we did say that this is a disease that continues for a long time — sometimes two to three years — and requires regular follow-ups. Treatment may need to be repeated more than once, and investigations and care will need to be conducted in a hospital setting,” he explained. Dr Yousaf appealed to the authorities to ensure transparency regarding the former prime minister’s health, calling for clear communication on the diagnosis, tests conducted, treatment provided, and follow-up plan. Reiterating the need for a retinal specialist, he said the condition was potentially serious. “Every Pakistani has the right to receive high-quality medical care, and this right should clearly be available to Imran Khan Sahab as well,” he said, personally urging the government to allow him to be involved in the PTI founder’s ongoing medical care whenever and wherever doctors are permitted to visit him. Overall risk of Nipah outbreak in Pakistan remains low, NIH informs high-level meeting

Pakistan has stepped up preparedness measures against the Nipah virus with officials from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) informing a high-level meeting on Thursday that the risk of an outbreak remained low, though the presence of animal reservoirs means it could not be entirely ruled out. A day earlier, the federal government ordered strict and enhanced health surveillance at all entry points of the country following regional alerts over the Nipah virus, a highly fatal zoonotic disease. In an advisory issued by the heath ministry's Border Health Services, authorities cited reports of suspected Nipah virus cases in India’s West Bengal state and warned of the virus’s potential for cross-border transmission. Director General (DG) Health Dr Abdul Wali Khan confirmed to The Express Tribune that a high-level meeting on preventive and preparedness measures was held today at the Ministry of National Health Services. Read More: Pakistan tightens border surveillance over Nipah virus He said the meeting was convened on the directions of Health Minister Mustafa Kama to review national readiness and ensure that response mechanisms are in place. DG Khan added that NIH officials said the risk of an outbreak remained low, but could not be fully ruled out due to the presence of animal populations. He further said that they also confirmed that Pakistan had adequate laboratory capacity and diagnostic kits to test suspected cases, but noted that no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment existed. Khan said Health Secretary Mr. Hamed Yaqoob Shaikh apprised the forum that although no Nipah virus cases had been detected in Pakistan in humans or animals to date, the ecological conditions observed in neighbouring countries necessitated continued vigilance and preparedness. He added that officials reviewed preparedness across federal health institutions, surveillance systems, Border Health Services and major hospitals in the federal capital. DG Khan said he himself told the meeting's participants that the Nipah virus was a zoonotic pathogen, with fruit bats and pigs as natural reservoirs, and that reported human outbreaks had so far been limited to parts of Asia, beginning in Malaysia in 1999. He said fruit bats were present in Pakistan, particularly in northern and forested regions, but added that no scientific evidence existed of active Nipah virus circulation or spillover into humans within the country. Khan said that according to Border Health Services officials at the meeting, enhanced screening of inbound travellers was underway at airports and land crossings, including thermal screening and travel history assessments, particularly for passengers arriving from high-risk regions, although there were no direct flights from countries that had recently reported cases. Also Read: What to know about the Nipah virus? He said that executive directors of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and the Federal Government Polyclinic told the meeting's members that designated isolation facilities were available and trained staff were ready to manage suspected cases under national guidelines. The DG added that health experts at the meeting reiterated that Nipah was a highly fatal disease, with past outbreaks showing a case fatality rate of 40-75%, often causing severe respiratory illness and brain inflammation. He further said that according to the federal health secretary, there was no cause for public panic but he urged authorities to remain alert and proactive; directed stronger public awareness campaigns ahead of Ramazan; advised people to wash fruits thoroughly, avoid fallen or partially eaten fruit and refrain from unsafe food-handling practices that may increase exposure to animal secretions, and stressed the need for close coordination between federal and provincial health departments to ensure rapid detection and response. DG Khan said that the meeting's participants concluded that continued surveillance, border screening, hospital preparedness and public awareness were critical to preventing the introduction and spread of Nipah virus in Pakistan, while reaffirming that the current threat level remained minimal. Nipah is classified as a priority pathogen by the World Health Organisation because of its ability to spark fast‑moving outbreaks, its fatality rate of 40-75%, and the fact that there is no approved vaccine or cure. The virus, carried by fruit bats and animals such as pigs, can trigger a deadly brain-swelling fever in humans and can also spread directly from person to person through close contact. Several vaccines are in development but remain in testing. Nipah was first identified in 1998 during an outbreak among pig farmers in Malaysia and Singapore, although scientists believe it has circulated in flying foxes for millennia and warn that a mutated, highly transmissible strain could emerge from bats. India regularly reports sporadic infections, particularly in the southern state of Kerala, considered among the world's most at-risk regions for Nipah outbreaks. The virus has been linked to the deaths of dozens of people in Kerala since it first appeared there in 2018. The West Bengal cases are the state's first in nearly two decades, following five fatal infections in 2007, local media reported.

PHC stays K-P Assembly probe in May 9 case

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday stayed the functioning of the inquiry commission formed by the speaker of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to investigate the incidents of May 9 and 10, 2023, when violent nationwide riots broke out following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan. The bench also instructed the lawyers of all parties to assist the court on the legal aspects of the commission and the ongoing trial in future hearings before adjourning further proceedings. The directive came during the hearing of a writ petition filed by the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), conducted by a two-member bench comprising Justice Sahibzada Asadullah and Justice Dr Khurshid Iqbal. The hearing saw the presence of PBC’s lawyer Shabbir Hussain Gigyani, Additional Advocate General Abdul Rauf Afridi, and the speaker’s law officers. Also Read: PHC questions May 9 inquiry commission The petition stated that during the violent incidents of May 9 and 10, the Radio Pakistan building was attacked and damaged. Following the attack, a case was registered against the accused under anti-terrorism provisions, including current members of the provincial assembly. On December 12, the speaker issued a notification forming an inquiry commission, which also included assembly members. Gigyani argued that since some members of the assembly were already named in the case, they could not act as judges in a matter in which they were accused. He added that the speaker had no legal authority to establish an inquiry commission for a case currently under trial. The notification, he stated, had no legal standing and was not issued under any proposed law. The court halted the commission’s operations and adjourned the hearing. PHC defers hearing on military court sentences till Feb 12 The PHC bench separately adjourned the hearing of writ petitions challenging sentences awarded by military courts to five individuals until February 12. The petitions were filed by Rais, Adnan Ahmad, Sohrab Khan, Bashir Ahmad and Rahimullah. Barrister Aamirullah Khan Chamkani represented the petitioners, while Additional Attorney General Sanaullah appeared on behalf of the federation. During the proceedings, counsel for the petitioners informed the court that five separate writ petitions had been filed against the convictions, handed down by the military courts. The additional attorney general told the bench that in each case the sealed record had been submitted to the court and that the convicts had also filed appeals before the Field Marshal Court, urging the high court to wait for the decisions on those appeals. Read: PHC rejects all petitions against military court sentences The petitioners’ counsel countered that earlier the federation had claimed no appeals were pending, while now it maintained that the appeals were under consideration. He argued that if appeals were indeed pending before the Field Marshal Court, the relevant records should be provided to the petitioners, adding that the sentences were awarded in 2024 and decisions on appeals should have been announced by now. Justice Asadullah observed that the matter could be referred back to the bench which earlier heard the case. Agreeing with the suggestion, the bench transferred the petitions to the previous bench and adjourned the hearing until February 12.

What to know about the Nipah virus?

Two cases of the deadly Nipah virus in India have prompted authorities in Thailand and Malaysia to step up airport screening to prevent the spread of the infection.  Pakistan also subsequently ordered strict and enhanced health surveillance at all entry points following regional alerts. But what is the Nipah virus, and how worried should people be? What is Nipah virus? Nipah is a rare viral infection ‍that spreads largely from infected animals, mainly fruit bats, to humans. It can be asymptomatic but it is often very dangerous, with a case fatality rate of 40% to 75%, depending on the ‌local healthcare system's capacity for detection and ‍management, the World ‌Health Organisation (WHO) says. However, while it can also spread from person to person, it does not do this easily, and outbreaks are usually small and fairly contained, according to experts and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Candidate vaccines are under development, although none have been approved yet. How common is it? Nipah was first identified in Malaysia in 1999. Since then, there have been small outbreaks almost every year, mostly in Bangladesh. India also sees sporadic outbreaks. According to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a group that tracks emerging disease threats and funds the development of medical tools to protect against them, as of December 750 cases had been recorded in all, and 415 of the patients died. Reuters traced the spread of Nipah in a 2023 series, Bat ‌Lands. Read More: Pakistan tightens border surveillance over Nipah virus How does it spread? When first identified in Malaysia, Nipah spread largely through direct contact with sick pigs or contaminated tissues. Since then, it more commonly spreads from contact with what scientists say is its natural host: fruit bats. More specifically, the consumption of fruit or fruit products — like raw date palm juice — containing urine or saliva from infected fruit bats has been the most likely source of infection, the WHO says. Human-to-human spread has been found, mainly after close contact between a sick patient and their family or caregivers. What are the symptoms? The initial symptoms of Nipah such as fever, headaches and muscle pain are not specific and can be confused with other diseases. These can then be followed by neurological signs indicating acute encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, and some people experience severe respiratory problems. Seizures occur in severe cases, progressing to a coma in days. Most people who get better make a full recovery, but some experience long-term neurological problems. How worried should we be? While Nipah is a dangerous disease with a high fatality rate, it has not yet shown signs of becoming more transmissible among humans or spreading easily worldwide, scientists say. However, it remains a significant public health concern, according to the WHO, particularly in countries where outbreaks are more common. It can also lead to the mass culling of farm animals such as pigs that are susceptible ‍to the virus. Scientists say, however, that it is unlikely to spread globally — and also point out that airport screening may be ineffective as the virus has a long incubation period. What vaccines or treatment are available? There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for Nipah, although a number of candidates are undergoing testing, including one developed by the Oxford University scientists involved in developing one of the Covid-19 vaccines. Their Nipah vaccine uses the same technology, and began phase II testing in Bangladesh in December in collaboration with the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, and with funding from CEPI.

K-P CM doubles down, calls Khyber jirga meeting for Sunday to settle Tirah displacement controversy

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi doubled down on his assertions on Tuesday regarding the controversy over the ongoing movement of people in Tirah Valley and called a jirga for February 1 to settle the debate. Following a surge in unrest and escalating security concerns, large-scale displacement is underway in Tirah Valley, with thousands of families leaving their homes for safer areas, including Bara and Peshawar. The situation has caused the federal and provincial government to be at loggerheads with the former rubbishing the notion of planned or forced displacement while the latter has rejected as "misleading and factually incorrect" the federal government's claim that displacement of the residents of the Tirah valley of Khyber district is voluntary in nature. Earlier today, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the current displacement was part of "routine" seasonal migration and added that there was no question of a military operation in the area. In a video message issued later in the day, CM Afridi said that a jirga in the K-P Assembly comprising all political parties of the province had unanimously approved a 15-point agenda with everyone agreeing that a military operation was not the solution to the problem and terrorism was not being eliminated through operations. He added that everyone said that the issue should be resolved by sitting together so that permanent peace could be established. "But they did not agree and it was decided in closed rooms that another operation would be imposed on Tirah Valley. A 24-member committee was formed under the leadership of the corps commander and IG FC (Frontier Corps inspector general). In the 24-member committee, the elders of the Afridi tribe were told to vacate their homes because they could not carry out the operation. The Afridi tribe did not agree with the committee members, but they were forced to vacate their homes in the snowfall season," the chief minister claimed. وزیر اعلیٰ خیبر پختونخوا محمد سُہیل خان آفریدی کا وادی تیراہ آپریشن پر اہم ویڈیو پیغام! وادی تیراہ پر آج ایک بار پھر سخت ترین حالات مسلط کیے گئے ہیں، عمران خان کی منتخب جمہوری حکومت کو ریجیم چینج آپریشن کے ذریعے گرایا گیا، رجیم چینج کے بعد جب دہشتگرد دوبارہ آباد ہو رہے تھے تو… pic.twitter.com/PaK4PGWZpD — PTI (@PTIofficial) January 27, 2026   CM Afridi added that he had repeatedly made it clear that even animals could not survive due to the snowfall in the operation area and now the whole world was watching the visuals of displaced elderly, children and women.  He further claimed that no operation was being carried out due to the snowfall. "Now someone please explain to us what purpose has been achieved by these decisions made in closed rooms? This operation was started only to defame me among my people and to end my government. But I went among my people and they gave me love and respect," Afridi added. "Now that they have understood that the decision to carry out the operation at this time was wrong, they have issued a press release that the people of Tirah are migrating of their own free will," he said, apparently referring to a notification from the K-P government's Relief, Rehabiliation and Settlement Department that was was shown today by the defence minister.  4ارب KP حکومت آپریشن کے لئے ایک نوٹیفیکشن ذریعے ریلیف کے لئے ریلیز کرے۔ سہیل آفریدی صاحب کہتے ھیں مجھے نہیں پتہ ۔ انکی حکومت میں اربوں بانٹے جا رہے ھیں انکو پتہ ھیُں ۔ کوئی اور واردات نہ ھو جائے بعد یہ نہ کہہ دیں مجھے پتہ ھی نہیں چلا۔ نوٹیفیکیشن حاضر ھے. 4ارب کی واردات خود کرو… pic.twitter.com/bUP0IiL9g8 — Khawaja M. Asif (@KhawajaMAsif) January 27, 2026 "This press release is extremely dangerous, an attempt is being made to create conflict between the province, institutions and the federation through this. This is a plan to create a lack of trust. After this press release, the nation will not trust their words in any way because the corps commander and the IGFC have made big promises before the committee." CM Afridi said he would convene a grand jirga of all tribes residing in Khyber on Sunday at 2pm at Jamrud Football Stadium, where people would be asked whether they were displaced willingly or forced to leave their homes. “We will show the world that injustice is being done to us,” he said, adding that the people of K-P were not expendable and that their lives were not cheap. CM Afridi said that around the time of the PTI government's ouster through a vote of no-confidence, when militant activity began resurging, peace jirgas and marches were organised across Khyber, Hazara, Malakand, Dera Ismail Khan and Waziristan. "We warned that ... terrorism was being imposed on us again. At that time, the illegitimate government of PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) said that we were spreading false propaganda," he said, adding that large numbers of Pakhtuns later took to the streets to reject decisions made behind closed doors, adding that districts where people resisted such decisions remained peaceful to this day. In contrast, the chief minister said areas where the threat was not taken seriously were once again suffering from unrest. CM Afridi claimed that despite 22 major operations and more than 14,000 intelligence-based operations, peace could not be sustained, questioning what positive outcomes could be expected from launching yet another operation in Tirah. Also Read: CM Afridi warns PM delays in NFC transfers pushing K-P into 'acute fiscal, governance crisis' Afridi added his government had released Rs4 billion for the care of affected families, citing past experiences where victims of earlier operations were promised compensation but never received it. He said his government was determined not to abandon its people this time. “I stand with the Pakhtun nation and will continue to fight for their rights until my last drop of blood,” he said, warning that failure to resist now would mean carrying coffins for the rest of their lives.

Bill proposes voluntary student drug screening

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior will take up today (Tuesday) the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Bill, 2025, a key legislation aimed at tackling drug use in educational institutions by further amending the Control of Narcotic Substances Act, 1997. Introduced by PPP MNA Sahar Kamran, the proposed legislation aims to prevent drug use in educational institutions, promote student rehabilitation, protect mental health and introduce a treatment-based approach instead of a punitive system. Under the bill, new sections 53A, 53B and 53C are proposed to be added to the act. According to proposed Section 53A, candidates seeking admission to higher secondary level or above educational institutions may voluntarily undergo non-invasive drug screening. Drug testing will only be conducted by accredited medical institutions and strictly with the written and informed consent of the candidate. The bill clearly states that a positive drug test result alone cannot be used as grounds to deny admission. In such cases, the candidate will be provided confidential medical assessment and, with consent, may be referred to rehabilitation or recovery programmes. The government will be responsible for providing counselling, rehabilitation and mental health facilities to such students free of cost. Under proposed Section 53B, it will be mandatory for every public and private educational institution to appoint at least one trained faculty member or staff member as a student counsellor. The student counsellor will be responsible for raising awareness about the harms of drug use, addiction and mental health issues. Educational institutions will also be required to establish confidential support mechanisms for students and, in collaboration with health institutions, provide mental health services on campus.

Basant celebrations restricted to Lahore only, Punjab govt informs LHC

The Punjab Home Department informed the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday that Basant would not be celebrated anywhere in the province except Lahore, and submitted a compliance report detailing safety arrangements for the festival. LHC Justice Malik Muhammad Owais Khalid heard petitions related to Basant and directed authorities to ensure full implementation of precautionary measures and summoned Lahore Deputy Commissioner Capt (retd) Muhammad Ali Ijaz to appear before the court. Officials from the Directorate General of Public Relations and the School Education Department were also summoned to brief the court on public awareness campaigns. During the hearing, Punjab Special Home Secretary Fazalur Rehman submitted a compliance report informing the court that a high-level committee overseeing Basant arrangements would meet on January 27, with progress report to be presented at the next hearing. The court expressed satisfaction with the report while stressing that no accident should occur during the festival, calling public safety a core responsibility of the government. Read More: Basant returns under strict safety SOPs: Azma Bukhari Authorities informed the court that safety planning was based on a decade of data, leading to the creation of red, yellow and green zones across Lahore. The walled city has been declared a red zone, while areas such as Harbanspura fall into yellow zones. Green zones are areas assessed as having minimal risk. Funds have also been released to install protective rods on motorcycles to reduce injuries caused by kite strings. Justice Khalid stressed on the need to set up emergency medical camps along roads where accidents may occur, directing that trained doctors be present at the camps. Officials said emergency response would include Rescue 1122, mobile clinics and 70 clinics on wheels, all of which would be operational during Basant. Hospitals have been placed on alert, and rescue services will remain fully mobilised. The court also raised concerns over recent fire incidents, directing authorities to adopt special measures to prevent such incidents during the festival. On enforcement involving minors, officials clarified that children were fined rather than booked in criminal cases to avoid jeopardising their future. The court further instructed authorities to prevent the import of dangerous metallic kite strings from other provinces. The hearing was adjourned until Wednesday.. Read More: Punjab bans 132 ‘suggestive’ songs during Basant celebrations Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the provincial administration also told The Express Tribune that Basant celebrations, scheduled from February 6-8, were restricted exclusively to Lahore, stressing that kite flying and kite manufacturing remained strictly banned in all other districts of Punjab. The clarification came as district administrations across the province intensify enforcement to prevent illegal kite flying ahead of the festival. In Nankana Sahib, a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tasleem Akhtar Rao reviewed enforcement measures under the revised kite-flying law. Senior officials from the police, district administration and other agencies attended the session. Rao reiterated that kite flying and kite manufacturing were prohibited within district limits and warned that violations would result in strict punishments and heavy fines under the new legislation. He said effective enforcement would be ensured to protect lives and property. Alongside legal and administrative measures, the Punjab government also begun preparations to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity during Basant. Provincial Energy Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar sought detailed recommendations from Lesco and other departments, including the Walled City of Lahore Authority, district administration, Rescue 1122, local government, housing and industry departments. A steering committee under the energy minister will scrutinise the proposals, with final recommendations to be presented to the chief minister on Wednesday. Four working groups have been formed to oversee various aspects of the arrangements. Lesco was directed to submit a detailed plan related to securing the power transmission system, which has suffered disruptions during the past festivals due to kite strings. Special teams would remain on standby to respond to emergencies, while efforts were underway to remove hanging and hazardous wires across the city. On the enforcement front, Lahore police have launched a sweeping crackdown on illegal kite flying. Acting on the directives from Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) Muhammad Faisal Kamran, police in the Cantonment Division arrested 92 kite flyers during targeted operations, according to Cantt Superintendent of Police (SP) Ikhlaqullah Tarar. Police said arrests were made across multiple areas, including South Cantt, Factory Area, DHA Phases A and B, Baghbanpura, Manawan, Batapur, Harbanspura, DHA Phase C, Burki, Hudiara, Hair, North Cantt, Ghaziabad and Mustafaabad. Cases were registered against all arrested persons, and investigations are ongoing. SP Tarar said a zero-tolerance policy was being enforced against kite flyers, sellers and manufacturers, adding that operations would continue to ensure public safety. With court oversight, administrative coordination and enforcement measures now in place, authorities say the focus remains on ensuring that Basant — limited to Lahore — was celebrated without loss of life or property.

TTAP to finalise Feb 8 protest plan

Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) will hold its second meeting on Monday (today) to finalise arrangements for February 8, as indications emerge of a tactical shift away from street agitation towards more calibrated ways of registering protest, according to sources within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The evolving approach comes amid heightened state scrutiny and internal assessments of mobilisation capacity, prompting the alliance to reassess how best to mark the anniversary of the general elections, which it alleges were marred by widespread rigging. While February 8 remains central to TTAP's political messaging, sources suggest the method of protest is still being closely guarded. TTAP spokesperson Akhundzada Hussain, speaking to The Express Tribune, confirmed that a meeting of the TTAP leadership would be held at Mehmood Khan Achakzai's residence around 2pm to finalise the February 8 mass protest plan against alleged rigging. Asked about the apparent shift in approach, he said that as of now mass protests and rallies were indeed not on the cards, though the final decision rested with TTAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai. Asked whether this meant there would be no activity on streets and roads, he said they would "keep the plan close to the chest". He added that given the precautionary regressive measures against PTI by the state in a bid to throttle their plans, they could not afford to make everything public beforehand. Akhundzada said their focus at this stage was on wheel jam and shutter down across the country. He said whatever plan was finalised, the decision had been taken to put the "wheel in motion" a day before the "D day". He said this would be the second meeting for February 8 and that it would be attended by TTAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai, PTI chief Barrister Gohar, Salman Akram Raja, Allama Raja Nasir, Muhammad Zubair and Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar. A source within PTI said that, for now, no preparations had been made for any street movement, indicating a shift in policy or, more bluntly, a realisation of depleting mobilisation-worthy ground support. "We have the entire public behind us, the entire country knows the elections were rigged, so what," he said, adding that the public did not matter in the existing power equation. He said the fact of the matter was that PTI wanted to see what Achakzai planned for February 8, as "it is going to be his show now, not of PTI alone". PTI, he said, would be one member of it. He added that the actual utility of Mehmood Khan Achakzai was not to run a street movement but to find a way out of the "blind alley" PTI found itself stuck in. The source said adopting a safer route on February 8 would be a wise move and that the focus should instead shift towards backdoor engagement to carve out some political space for PTI. He said protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone would not amount to much, while any attempt at a street movement in Punjab could have catastrophic results, given what he termed the unrestrained use of power against the party by the state.

Afghan students face hurdles in degree verification amid repatriation

Afghan students returning home are facing serious challenges in getting their educational degrees verified by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The students say that before the government’s decision on the repatriation of Afghan refugees, they were admitted to Pakistani universities using Proof of Registration (PoR) and Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) documents. However, these same documents are now being rejected for degree verification. According to the affected students, when they approach HEC for verification, they are told that degrees based on PoR and ACC cards are no longer being attested. Verification is now only possible with a passport. The students explained that they completed their education at various colleges and universities across Pakistan, including the University of Peshawar, based on PoR and ACC cards. Admissions were granted, exams conducted, and HEC-issued degrees were awarded, yet the same documents are now considered invalid. Read More: K-P MPAs call for return of stranded students The situation has become more critical as the federal government encourages Afghan citizens to return to Afghanistan. Without HEC attestation, these students’ educational qualifications are rendered unusable in Afghanistan and other countries. Most affected students do not possess Afghan passports because they have spent their entire educational lives in Pakistan under PoR and ACC cards. The new passport requirement has limited their opportunities for further education, employment, and future prospects. The students have urged HEC and the government of Pakistan to review the policy and allow degree verification based on the same documents on which they were admitted and awarded degrees, ensuring that thousands of educated young Afghans are not left facing an uncertain future.

Preparations to upgrade Pakistan Railways ML-1 enter final stage

Pakistan Railways Chief Executive Officer Aamir Ali Baloch said on Saturday that preparations for the upgradation of Main Line-1 (ML-1) have entered the final stage, and ground-breaking for the long-delayed project is expected in July. The remarks came in a meeting with a delegation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at the Railways Headquarters in Lahore. The ADB delegation held detailed discussions with senior railway officials on the scope, design and financing structure of the ML-1 upgradation. During the meeting, the delegation shared its observations and technical recommendations with the CEO, while both sides agreed to move forward to finalise key details of the project. The Lahore meeting was held after the ADB team recently inspected the Karachi to Rohri railway line, a critical 480-kilometre section that forms part of the first package of ML-1. Officials said the site visit was aimed at assessing the existing infrastructure and identifying priority areas for investment, particularly in track renewal, improving the signal system and speed enhancement. ML-1 is the backbone of Pakistan’s rail network, stretching over 1,872 kilometres from Karachi to Peshawar and carrying the bulk of the country’s passenger and freight traffic. The project aims to modernise the ageing railway system to increase the speed of trains, improve safety, enhance freight capacity and reduce travel time between major cities. Once completed, it is expected to significantly lower logistics costs and support industrial growth by ensuring reliable transportation of goods, including coal from Thar and minerals from Balochistan. The pace of the project, however, is not smooth and still many analysts do not believe that the ML-1's ground-breaking will be possible in July, as they have heard such statements previously and too often. Although the initial feasibility was prepared years ago, serious progress only began after ML-1 was included under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. At that time, China had expressed readiness to finance the project, but rising costs, changes in design, and Pakistan’s mounting debt concerns led to delays. Over time, the project’s estimated cost was revised many times, prompting China to adopt a more cautious approach, particularly as Islamabad struggled to secure sustainable financing terms. As a result, Pakistan turned to multilateral lenders, including the ADB, to explore alternative financing options. While ADB has not yet formally approved funding, officials see the recent inspections and high-level engagements as a positive sign. Analysts believe ADB’s involvement could help restructure the project into manageable phases, easing the financial burden and restoring momentum. Former railway officials said the renewed engagement with ADB marks a critical step towards reviving ML-1. If financing is secured and timelines are met, the project could finally move from decades of planning into execution, offering a long-awaited boost to the country’s transport and economic infrastructure.

‘Grave miscarriage of justice’: Civil society slams Imaan, Hadi convictions in social media post case

Political parties, parliamentarians and members of the legal community condemned the conviction and sentencing of human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Advocate Hadi Ali Chattha, on Saturday, describing the verdict as “unfair” and a “grave miscarriage of justice”. A district and sessions court in Islamabad on Saturday convicted the two in a case related to controversial social media posts and sentenced them to 17 years in prison. The case pertains to alleged posts and reposts on X, formerly Twitter, which authorities described as “anti-state”. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) registered the case in August last year under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016, alleging the content was intended to incite divisions and portray state institutions negatively. The couple was arrested on Friday in Islamabad while reportedly heading to the district courts, and the court announced its verdict today. تحریک تحفظ آئین پاکستان ایمان مزاری اور ہادی علی چٹھہ کے خلاف غیرمنصفانہ اور غیرآزادانہ ٹرائل کے بعد سنائی گئی دس دس سال قید کی سزا کی سختی سے مذمت کرتی ہے۔ یہ فیصلہ عدالتی آزادی کے بنیادی اصولوں کے منافی ہے اور ایک خوفزدہ، زیرِ دباؤ عدالتی ماحول کا شاخسانہ ہے، جہاں انصاف کے… pic.twitter.com/FvbQHLT8JP — Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan (@TTAP_OFFICIAL) January 24, 2026 'Unfair and non-transparent trial' The Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) condemned what it described as an “unfair and non-transparent trial” and said the verdict violated “the fundamental principles of judicial independence”. In a statement, the opposition coalition said the decision reflected “an atmosphere of fear and pressure within the judiciary, where political objectives were being prioritised over the dispensation of justice”. It termed the verdict “a blot on democracy and justice” and demanded the immediate release of both individuals. 'Complete moral and institutional collapse' The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf raised concerns over the alleged mistreatment of the couple, describing it as “outrageous”. It criticised the authorities for what it called a “complete moral and institutional collapse”. 'Grave miscarriage of justice' TTAP leader and newly appointed Senate opposition leader Raja Nasir Abbas called the verdict a “grave miscarriage of justice”. In a post on X, he said: “These human rights lawyers were convicted under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act solely for social media posts criticising what they saw as state abuses and advocating for marginalised communities.” He added: “The unfair sentences, procedural irregularities, and apparent motivations behind the case reveal a weaponisation of the law to silence dissent and intimidate those who defend vulnerable groups.” https://ift.tt/Jd6giZb 'Sham beyond any doubt' Lawyer and civil rights activist, Jibran Nasir, similarly questioned the judge's jurisdiction to give the sentence. Nasir wrote on X that the judge “is expressly barred from pronouncing final judgement ... till the final disposal of the transfer application which is pending before the Islamabad High Court”. He added, “We filed this Transfer Application on behalf of Imaan and Hadi on 05.12.2025, seeking transfer of the trial from the court of Afzal Majoka. The application is yet to be heard and decided.” Judge Afzal Majoka has no jurisdiction to convict Advocates @ImaanZHazir and @AdvHadiali as he is expressly barred from pronouncing final judgement under Section 526(8) Cr.P.C. till the final disposal of the transfer application which is pending before the Islamabad High Court.… pic.twitter.com/byo17uBBbB — M. Condemning the decision, he stated, “Imaan and Hadi do not stand convicted but this trial has proved to be sham beyond any doubt and has irreparably prejudiced Imaan and Hadi's right to fair trial and thus the trial should be considered vitiated.” 'Totally illegal' Imaan's mother and former federal minister, Shireen Mazari, similarly challenged the decision, terming it "totally illegal". She added in a statement, adding that “being under investigation does not place someone outside the protection of the law”. Zafar said a system confident in its authority did not need to rely on discomfort or coercion to assert control, stressing that if the state believed its case was strong, it should allow the legal process to speak for itself. Any action that appeared excessive, she said, distracted from the merits of a case and raised questions that need not arise in the first place. 'Punishment dressed up as process' Constitutional lawyer Usama Khawar Ghumman said the proceedings did not amount to due process, describing them as “punishment dressed up as process”. In a statement, he said that in a “colonial state, the process is the punishment”, adding that keeping individuals incarcerated for prolonged periods rendered appeals meaningless. While the convictions were likely to be set aside on appeal, he explained that by that time their liberty would already have been lost, without compensation or accountability for the prosecution or the system. He said the law was being used as an "instrument of control" rather than a means of justice. 'Persecution of its own' Meanwhile, lawyer Moiz Baig said the convictions did not come as a surprise, given the manner in which the trial against the couple had been conducted. However, he added, “What’s disconcerting is the manner in which the bar has acquiesced to the persecution of its own. Imaan and Hadi’s conviction sends a message across the entire bar that those who defend those being persecuted by the state, too, shall fall prey to the state’s might." 'Preposterous mockery of justice' Barrister Taimur Malik termed the convictions "preposterous”. Convicting Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha for ten years in a tweets case is preposterous. In this season of convictions you can be handed ten year sentences for anything or nothing. Sanaullah backs MQM-P's 'genuine' demand for Gul Plaza judicial probe

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Saturday welcomed the "genuine" demand by coalition partner Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan for a judicial inquiry into the Gul Plaza fire, saying it should be heard. The MQM-P demanded earlier today that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif form a high-level judicial inquiry into the Gul Plaza tragedy, accusing the Sindh government and Karachi’s civic authorities of negligence, delays, and misleading the public. Speaking on programme 'Naya Pakistan' on a private news broadcaster, Sanaullah said that in a democracy, every individual and political party had the right to raise demands or protest incidents. “If MQM has made a demand or has a specific viewpoint, it should be welcomed and listened to,” he added. Read More: MQM-P demands judicial inquiry into Gul Plaza tragedy He said it was up to the federal cabinet to decide whether to act on MQM’s demand. “If there is potential for action, there is no objection in implementing it. If not, the MQM can be argued with. Similarly, if the PPP has a different perspective, it should also be given value and listened to,” Sanaullah said. “There is nothing to be upset about. This is the essence of democracy — everyone should have the freedom to speak,” the senator added. He further said that decisions on such matters were not difficult for the government, which could resolve them through consensus. “If consensus is reached, there is no objection to taking action, whether it involves constitutional amendments or exercising constitutional powers,” he said. The blaze would rage for nearly two days and reduce Gul Plaza, a multi-storey complex of 1,200 family-run shops selling children's clothes, toys, crockery and household goods, to ash. At least 71 people were killed, with 15 still missing and feared dead, police official Asad Ali Raza said, in the January 17 blaze — Karachi's largest in over a decade. Pakistan should stand with Bangladesh: Sanaullah On questions regarding Pakistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup and support for Bangladesh, the PML-N leader said, “Prima facie, I personally believe we should stand with Bangladesh. In the long run, it will be in our interest. Yes, we may suffer some financial loss in cricket, but that can be managed.” His statement comes after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) over what he described as unfair treatment of Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup dispute. Naqvi, who also serves as the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, said he had raised Pakistan’s concerns directly at ICC forums, urging the world governing body to treat all member nations equally. Read: ICC names Scotland as replacement for Bangladesh at T20 World Cup 2026 When asked whether Pakistan could consider a boycott of the T20 World Cup, he said the decision would rest with the country’s leadership, while also suggesting that the ICC should explore a hybrid model for Bangladesh. Sanaullah added that supporting Bangladesh could have long-term benefits for bilateral relations. “If Pakistan stands with Bangladesh today, we may enter into a relationship where, like two brothers, both countries support each other and move forward together,” he said, referring to the separation that occurred in 1971. When asked if Pakistan was supporting Bangladesh or anti-Sheikh Hasina groups, he said, “We should not get into those details. We are standing with Bangladesh, which is opposing India, a country that is our enemy.” He criticised India’s interventions in Bangladesh, saying that New Delhi’s involvement in local politics had created the current situation. Sanaullah backs court decision in Imaan Mazari case Sanaullah also defended an Islamabad court’s decision to sentence human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Advocate Hadi Ali Chattha, to prison terms, saying that no one should be allowed to cross certain boundaries or insult uniformed personnel. He said there were two perspectives regarding the case. “On one hand, there is a viewpoint in their favour, but on the other, there is the perspective that they were repeatedly given opportunities, repeatedly told to conduct cross-examination, yet they repeatedly mocked and disrespected the court,” he said. Sanaullah said he considered Mazari “like my sister or daughter” but added that “the manner of expression and the attitude they have adopted insults the uniformed personnel, the people who are sacrificing their lives for this country.” Read: Islamabad court sentences Imaan, Hadi to 17-year prison terms in social media posts case He said that no one should be allowed to cross such limits and that those engaging in such acts should refrain from doing so. Sanaullah said that if they had disagreements with the government, believed judicial independence had been curtailed or thought Parliament had made a wrong amendment, “they are free to criticise the government, target it with their remarks, even use strong language if they wish”. However, he added that “under the current circumstances, when we are raising the funerals of martyrs every day, they should at least exercise some restraint.” The premier's aide said they should not post on social media against institutions. Rejecting the claim that they were denied the right to cross-examine in court, Sanaullah said the court was following due procedure. “If the court did not act this way, the cross-examination would have continued for years, evidence would not have been completed, and the trial could not have concluded,” he said. The senator added that during trials, when people know the allegations against them have been proven, “people adopt certain tactics to delay the conclusion of the trial, and sometimes the court also takes a coercive approach to ensure the matter is concluded".

Murree hit by snowstorm as 5,000 tourists stranded

A major rescue operation was under way in Murree after heavy snowfall and a snowstorm left more than 5,000 tourist vehicles stranded on Friday, prompting the district administration to impose a complete ban on the entry of more vehicles into the hill station, DNA reported. Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi and District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Muhammad Raza Tanveer Sipra were present in the field to supervise the operation, which focused on clearing internal roads and ensuring the safe evacuation of stranded tourists. According to DNA, the deputy commissioner said snowfall had reached around one foot and was continuing. He said snowploughs, cranes and loaders were working round the clock to reopen main roads and restore mobility. He highlighted that the administration had mobilised all available resources to ensure public safety and was providing continuous guidance and assistance to tourists and residents. He appealed to visitors to remain patient, assuring them that all relevant departments were fully active. The DPO said visibility had dropped to near zero due to the intensity of the snowfall, creating life-threatening conditions. He said a complete ban had been imposed on the entry of further vehicles into Murree until the situation improved He said the safety of tourists remained the top priority under the prevailing weather conditions and urged people to strictly avoid travelling towards Murree. He added that stranded tourists should not panic as police and the district administration were present on the ground, the agency added. The DPO also advised people sheltering in vehicles to exercise caution while using heaters and to ensure adequate ventilation to maintain oxygen levels. He said police officers would remain deployed in the field until all tourists were safely evacuated and normal conditions were restored, a police spokesperson said. Fresh snowfall transformed popular hill resorts into postcard-perfect landscapes, drawing large numbers of visitors eager to experience the winter spectacle. Shogran, Naran and Kaghan witnessed a surge in tourists after news spread of heavy snow blanketing pine forests and mountain slopes. Visitors described the scenery as enchanting, with snow-covered valleys offering a rare and memorable experience. Many, however, struggled to cope with the biting cold, relying on braziers, hot beverages and warm clothing as temperatures plunged well below freezing point. The Kaghan Valley, Balakot and its surrounding areas, remained firmly in the grip of severe cold. Snowfall exceeding three feet at several locations has led to the closure of numerous link roads, severely restricting movement. Official figures show that Naran received up to four feet of snow, while Kaghan and Shogran received around three feet of snowfall. With temperatures dropping sharply, Naran recorded minus 10 degrees Celsius, turning the region into what locals described as a 'freezer'. While tourists continued to arrive in search of winter scenery, the same weather has posed serious challenges for residents. Power outages and disrupted communication networks have compounded difficulties, particularly in remote areas. The closure of the Kaghan Highway and several connecting roads has interrupted the supply of food, fuel and other essential goods, leaving many households struggling to meet basic needs. The district administration said snow-clearing operations had begun on the Kaghan Highway and other major routes, urging travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys and ensure that vehicles were fitted with tyre chains. Authorities warned that further snowfall was likely in upper areas and advised tourists to check weather and road conditions before travelling. Similar conditions prevailed in Battagram and its surrounding areas, including Chhattar Plain and Allai Tehsil, where residents experienced record snowfall for the first time in eight years. Heavy snow, which began late on Thursday night and continued until Friday, caused a sharp fall in temperatures and rendered many link roads impassable. The snowfall severely damaged the power infrastructure in Battagram and Allai, plunging large parts of the district into darkness. Electricity poles and transmission lines collapsed at multiple locations, while fallen trees brought down cables, resulting in a complete suspension of power supply. Attendance at government offices was minimal, commercial centres remained closed and residents were largely confined to their homes. Elsewhere in the Hazara region, Abbottabad received its first significant snowfall in nine years, while Thandiyani recorded up to four feet of snow. Nathia Gali, Ayubia, Donga Gali, Changla Gali and other hill stations reported between three and four feet of snowfall. Heavy snow and rain, accompanied by strong winds, pushed temperatures below freezing poibnt, while power supply in parts of Abbottabad was temporarily disrupted. Police and district authorities established assistance and information centres on routes leading to tourist destinations, providing guidance, food and support to visitors. Traffic police closed several roads, including routes linking Abbottabad with Murree and the Galiyat region, advising tourists to delay travel until snow is cleared and avoid driving after sunset. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast that snowfall is likely to subside, but warned that extreme cold, slippery roads and unstable weather conditions will continue to pose risks, urging citizens and tourists alike to exercise caution and prioritise safety. With additional input from agencies.
