Lawyers' convention rejects 26th amendment

Participants of a convention have rejected the 26th Constitutional Amendment, declaring it a blow to the supremacy of the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary. All-Pakistan Lawyers' Convention held at the Lahore High Court Bar on Friday passed a unanimous resolution stating that the 26th amendment destroyed constitutional rule and judicial freedom. The resolution affirmed that the legal community would continue its struggle until the amendment is completely repealed. It declared that lawyers would not accept any court verdict rendered in favour of the amendment, vowing that their movement would persist "until the Constitution is fully restored in Pakistan." A large number of senior lawyers and bar representatives from across the country attended the convention, reaffirming their unity and commitment to defend the rule of law, judicial independence and constitutional supremacy. A CB of the Supreme Court will resume hearing the petitions filed against the 26th Constitutional Amendment that was—bulldozed through parliament in October last year—introduced sweeping changes in judiciary including formation of CBs.
