The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced that a total lunar eclipse will be visible across Pakistan on the night of September 7, offering astronomy enthusiasts, students and the public a chance to witness the celestial spectacle. According to SUPARCO, the eclipse will begin at 8:30pm and reach its peak at 1:55am, when the Earth’s shadow will fully cover the moon. The event will last into the early hours of the morning. The eclipse will also be visible in parts of Asia, Africa and Europe, but most regions in Pakistan are expected to enjoy a clear view, provided weather conditions remain favourable. SUPARCO explained that a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to view with the naked eye, though telescopes and binoculars can enhance visibility. The commission urged the public to observe the event, ideally with astronomy clubs and educational groups holding observation activities nationwide. SUPARCO will also share images and live updates through its official social media platforms.
