Member of the National Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hassan of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has submitted two legislative bills in the National Assembly, seeking amendments to the Pakistan Citizenship Act and the Pakistan Penal Code. According to Express News, the first bill, titled the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2025, proposed granting citizenship rights to individuals — or their parents — born in former East Pakistan or those who migrated to Pakistan between 1971 and 1982 following the fall of Dhaka. The bill noted, "The people of East Pakistan made sacrifices for the country and migrated to West Pakistan after the fall of Dhaka. This law aims to secure their citizenship rights." The second bill proposed amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure to make phone snatching and street robberies officially punishable offences. The proposed Section 382-A outlines that individuals found guilty of such crimes can be arrested without a warrant and may not be eligible for bail. The bill emphasised the need to address the growing threat of street crime on public roads and in urban areas. It states that legal amendments are necessary to empower law enforcement and ensure the judiciary can take effective action.
