Gwadar airport to start flights to Muscat from Jan 10
The newly built Gwadar International Airport is set to commence flights to Muscat from January 10, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office announced on Monday, following delays caused by security concerns. The $200-million Chinese-funded facility, designed to handle both domestic and international flights, is among the largest airports in Pakistan. Capable of accommodating Airbus A380 aircraft, it is expected to serve 4 million passengers annually, according to the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA). A security review in August, prompted by militant attacks in Balochistan, delayed the airport’s opening. In a meeting on Monday, the PM directed officials to establish the airport as a major transit hub and improve road connectivity to Balochistan. “Flights from Gwadar to Muscat will start from January 10 next year,” the PM's Office said in a statement. The government is also in discussions with private carriers from China, Oman, and the UAE to expand international routes. The airport is part of China’s $65 billion investment in Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a key component of President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative. Nearby, a deep-water port, developed in partnership with Pakistan, Oman, and China, is nearing completion. Gwadar Airport includes cold storage, cargo facilities, and banking services through the State Bank of Pakistan. Security agencies, including the Airports Security Force and the Federal Investigation Agency, have been deployed to bolster safety. Militant groups in Balochistan, where Gwadar is located, have targeted Chinese investments and personnel in the past, viewing them as foreign exploitation of the resource-rich region. Recent attacks, including a suicide bombing in Karachi that killed two Chinese workers, have heightened tensions. Beijing has reportedly urged Islamabad to allow Chinese security personnel on the ground, a move Pakistan has resisted. Sharif emphasised the importance of stringent security measures at the airport, stating it symbolises the strong partnership between the two countries. “Gwadar International Airport reflects the enduring China-Pakistan friendship,” he said, thanking Beijing for building the modern facility. The meeting included Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and other senior officials. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Privatisation Minister Abdul Aleem Khan participated via video link.

Talks require top leadership's approval: Naveed Qamar
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Naveed Qamar said on Sunday that it remained to be seen how incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan's views would factor into the ongoing talks between the PTI and the government. He said the approval of political parties' top leadership was always essential for negotiations. "At some point, the top leadership has to approve of the developments of the negotiations, so their input is always there," Qamar said. When asked how the government would seek input from Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail, Qamar responded that it would need to determine how to accommodate Imran's opinions in the process. Speaking to a private news channel, Qamar also dismissed PTI's claims that discussions were underway to move Imran to house arrest at Adiala Jail. "No such thing was revealed to us. You can hear all kinds of things from the PTI," he said. His comments followed a statement by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah, who asserted that if the leaders of the three major political partiesPTI, PML-N, and PPPsat together for talks, the longstanding national crises could be resolved within 70 days. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif proposed the idea of a new social contract, saying that all major "power centres," including the army, judiciary, and bureaucracy, should participate in negotiations to address the country's challenges. Separately, PTI central leader Lal Chand Malhi released a video message stating that former premier Imran Khan had reiterated his call for a civil disobedience movement.

How religious schools need to be governed as the madrassa registration bill finally becomes law?
The Societies Registration (Amendment) Act 2024, commonly known as the madrassah registration bill, has officially become law with the signature of President Asif Ali Zardari as the new legislation will require all madrassas to comply with the government’s regulations. According to Express News, the federal government has agreed to the demands of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, which were aimed at regulating the registration of madrassas, bringing them under the umbrella of the Societies Act 2024. This move has resolved the longstanding dispute between the ruling PML-N government and the opposition JUI-F, over the bill, which had been passed by Parliament but returned by President Zardari. Key provisions of the new legislation As per the new law, all madrassas that were operating before its enactment must complete their registration within six months. Newly established madrassas, on the other hand, will have a year to register. The Act requires madrassas to submit annual audit reports of their educational and financial activities to the relevant registrar. One of the notable features of the law is that if a central madrassa is registered under a particular name, its branches will not need separate registration. Additionally, Madrassas that are registered under the Societies (Amendment) Act 2024 will not be required to register under any other law, ensuring a streamlined process for these institutions. The law also bans madrassas from teaching or publishing any material that promotes militancy, sectarianism, or religious hatred. However, it allows the study of comparative religion and mandates that madrassas gradually introduce modern subjects based on their available resources. The federal cabinet had approved amendments to the Societies Registration Act of 1860 on Friday. Initially passed as it stood, the President issued an ordinance to amend the act, allowing madrassas to register either under the societies registration or the education ministry.

Wahab calls for end to road blockades, urges K-P government to solve Parachinar issue
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has condemned the practice of blocking roads during ongoing protests, calling it an inappropriate approach to addressing grievances. Speaking to the media in Karachi, Wahab urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to address the situation in Parachinar directly, rather than allowing disruptions to spill over into other cities. “It is not suitable to block roads under the guise of protests. No matter what happens in the country, protests in Karachi always lead to city-wide shutdowns,” he stated. Wahab revealed that he had informed Sindh Minister Nasir Hussain Shah about the ongoing disruptions caused by protests. “He assured me that work is being done to resolve the issue, and I am hopeful that it will be resolved by today,” the mayor added. Citywide traffic chaos due to religious party's protests Meanwhile, Karachi’s traffic flow has been severely affected as a religious party continues sit-ins at 12 key locations across the city who are protesting in response to the recent Parachinar incident. Major arteries of Karachi, including Numaish Chowrangi, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Malir 15, Gulimaar, Power House Chowrangi, and Abul Hassan Isphahani Road, remain congested due to blockades. Other areas such as Five Star Chowrangi, Surjani Town, Incholi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar near Kamran Chowrangi, and parts of the National Highway near Steel Town are also facing significant disruptions. The protests have left commuters stranded and city operations disrupted, highlighting the widespread impact of these demonstrations on daily life in Karachi.

Pakistan launches multimodal trade route linking China to UAE
In a landmark development, Pakistan’s National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has commenced its first multimodal Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) operation, creating a trade corridor linking China to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) via the Khunjerab Pass. Officials have hailed the move as a “good omen” for the nation’s trade and logistics sectors. The TIR system is a global customs transit framework that facilitates seamless cross-border trade by minimising customs interference. NLC trucks transported electronic equipment from Kashgar, China, to Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port via Pakistan. The cargo will take 10 days to reach Dubai, significantly reducing the 30-day transit time of the sea route. “This achievement signifies a major leap forward in the operationalisation of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC),” NLC said in a statement, adding that the initiative highlights the year-round utility of the Khunjerab Pass for regional trade. The Khunjerab Pass, at over 4,600 metres above sea level, has previously only facilitated bilateral trade. It connects Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region with China’s Xinjiang province, serving as a critical gateway for South Asia-Europe trade. The first TIR operation included a ceremony at Sost Dry Port, the initial stop for the shipment, before its journey continued toward Karachi for the sea leg. Local traders and leaders welcomed the initiative. Imran Ali, a former president of the Gilgit-Baltistan Chamber of Commerce, called the development a “good omen for Pakistan’s economy,” saying it would boost regional trade and benefit local communities. Muhammad Iqbal, president of the Gilgit-Baltistan Importers and Exporters Association, said the project could “change the fate of the country,” improving local economic conditions and generating revenue. Customs officials reported a record Rs9.5 billion ($34.87 million) in revenue collected at the Sost Dry Port in the first half of the fiscal year 2024-25, up from Rs6.5 billion ($23.4 million) in the same period last year. Anti-smuggling efforts also yielded confiscated goods worth Rs600 million ($2.16 million). Experts view the initiative as a step towards transforming Pakistan into a major regional trade hub while boosting economic activities in Gilgit-Baltistan and Gwadar.

PTI leader's name 'mistakenly' put on PCL
The country's passport authority has tendered an apology to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for "mistakenly" placing the name of PTI leader and noted lawyer Shoab Shaheen on the Passport Control List (PCL). IHC's single-member bench comprising Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir on Friday took up a petition filed by Shaheen against authorities' decision to impose restrictions on his travel abroad. During the hearing, Shaheen appeared in person before the court and argued that his name was initially placed on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL). He said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) removed his name from the list on a court order. "However, my name was later added to the PCL as an act of political retaliation," he said. An FIA representative informed the court that Shaheen's name was not placed on any list by their agency. Meanwhile, a representative of the Passport Office said his name was mistakenly added to the PCL, but the error has now been rectified. Extending an apology, he said Shoaib Shaheen's passport had been reactivated. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir remarked that re-adding the name to any list in the future would constitute contempt of court. The hearing was then adjourned until January 13.

PTI urges introspection, course correction
Reacting to the press conference of the military's spokesperson, the PTI has stressed the need for course correction and introspection. "Pakistan and its 240 million people have been bearing the brunt of the state machinery's wrong and misguided priorities for a long time. "It is the state's responsibility to uphold justice and ensure fair play rather than resorting to intimidation, coercion and threat," said PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram in a statement on Friday. According to Akram, justice cannot be served by making decisions with preconceived notions and biases, as such decisions cannot be accepted as just. He said the power to punish or reward individuals lies solely with the judicial system, as mandated by the Constitution, warning that allowing defense institutions to establish their own courts would have devastating consequences for the state's justice system and the constitutional framework as a whole. "This is precisely why decisions delivered by independent constitutional courts are universally recognized and respected, whereas those made by military courts are not accepted anywhere in the world." Waqas asserted that an "alarming decline" in the state's rational thinking, decision-making and overall governance has been the primary catalyst for the prevailing chaos and conflict plaguing the country. "The state's narrative, built on deeply flawed, unrealistic, and hateful foundations, is the primary driver of escalating tensions and confrontation between the people and state institutions.

FIA arrests Karachi smuggler connected to Indian agent in trafficking plot
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) announced the arrest of Abdul Shakoor, a Karachi-based human smuggler, on Friday, accusing him of collaborating with an Indian agent to illegally send people to Europe. This arrest is part of a broader government crackdown on human trafficking, following a series of recent tragedies involving Pakistani migrants. FIA confirmed that Shakoor had been working with Gautam Sharma, an Indian national based in Azerbaijan. Sharma coordinated the illegal movement of migrants from Azerbaijan to Poland. In connection with Shakoor, three other suspects—Hasib Ahmed, Qaiser Ahmed, and Usman Ali, all from Punjab province—were also arrested. According to the FIA, Shakoor charged $5,028.89 per person for transportation to Poland, with each migrant paying an advance of $898.02. The agency also named organisations that facilitated the visa acquisition process for these migrants. The latest arrest follows the deaths of five Pakistani nationals in a boat disaster near the Greek island of Gavdos earlier this month, reigniting concerns about the dangers of illegal migration. This issue gained national attention last year after the deadly capsizing of a vessel off the Greek coast, where hundreds of migrants, including 262 Pakistanis, drowned during a perilous journey from Libya. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting to review the country’s efforts to combat human smuggling on Friday. He discussed the findings of a committee investigating the recent boat tragedy near Greece and called for the creation of a new task force, led by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, to develop long-term solutions to the human trafficking problem. PM Shehbaz directed authorities to arrest all individuals involved in the human smuggling trade within a week and take immediate legal action. He also raised concerns over the lack of disciplinary measures against government officials suspected of aiding smugglers and stressed the need for stricter visa checks and travel regulations for all outbound migrants. The meeting also provided updates on the identification of Pakistani nationals involved in the Greek boat tragedy and the ongoing process of repatriating their bodies.

Imran Khan rejects house arrest deal, calls for remittance boycott
Former prime minister Imran Khan has reportedly rejected a proposed house arrest deal on Friday, doubling down on his call for political change in Pakistan, reported Arab News. In a social media post on Friday, Khan alleged that he had been offered a deal where he would be placed under house arrest at his Bani Gala residence in exchange for negotiations with the government and the provision of political space for his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). However, Khan stressed that he would rather remain in jail than accept such a deal, insisting that all PTI political prisoners must be released first. Khan's rejection of the house arrest offer comes after the government began formal talks with PTI to ease tensions. The negotiations were sparked by Khan's threat of civil disobedience and his appeal to overseas Pakistanis to halt remittances to Pakistan until key demands were met. These demands include the release of PTI prisoners and the formation of judicial commissions to probe violent protests on May 9 and November 26, which were blamed on PTI supporters. In his statement, Khan called for a boycott of remittances, framing it as a stand for “true freedom and the restoration of democracy.” He said that the boycott would continue until the government took meaningful steps to address his demands, though he indicated the campaign could be called off if negotiations yield positive results. The PTI founder also criticised the military trials of PTI supporters arrested after the May 9 protests, condemning the lack of transparency and the violation of civilian rights. He suggested that the trials should have been conducted in open courts, with video footage of the events presented as evidence, as required by Pakistan’s constitution. The May 9 protests, sparked by Khan’s brief detention on corruption charges, led to widespread violence, with hundreds of PTI supporters attacking government and military installations.

Richard Grenell slams Khawaja Asif over remarks about Imran Khan
Richard Grenell, former US ambassador and President-elect Donald Trump’s special envoy nominee, criticised Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for alleging that Israel-backed Western voices were campaigning for ex prime minister Imran Khan’s release from prison. “The death threats, and crazy talk … from the Minister of Defence is reckless,” Grenell posted on X, tagging the IMF and USAID. “There should be a review of what the US taxpayer provides Pakistan in aid.” Asif had claimed that Western figures calling for Khan’s release were supported by Israel, which Pakistan does not recognise. “This clearly shows that Imran Khan is an Israeli asset through which they want to destroy the only Muslim nuclear power,” he said in a statement. In response, Grenell demanded explanations from Pakistan’s embassy in Washington and Ambassador Rizwan Sheikh. Earlier, Grenell urged the Biden administration to advocate for Khan’s release before leaving office, stating it would allow him to participate in Pakistan's political process. Meanwhile, the Foreign Office declined to comment on Grenell’s remarks. Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said on Thursday, “As far as any individual capacity, anyone making statements in their individual capacity, we would not like to comment on that.”

Xmas celebrated with fervour
Like the rest of the country, the Christian community in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad celebrated the annual Christmas festival with religious fervour and devotion. After attending special prayers at churches, Christian families thronged at least 45 recreational spots including parks and lakes. A good number of Christian families also went to Murree to enjoy the snowfall. Christmas celebrations were held under tight security in the churches of the two cities, in which religious songs were performed to pay homage to Mary and the Prophet Jesus, along with special prayers. Pastors and priests shed light on the history of Christmas and gave a message that they had to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ with a sincere heart. Their sermons portrayed a message of peace, security, brotherhood, and sharing in each other's pain and sufferings. On this occasion, songs for peace and special prayers were also offered for the development, prosperity and security of Pakistan. A large number of children, women, elders and youth participated in the special worship service in the churches led by the priests. All the churches including the oldest Catholic Church established at Holy Family Hospital were beautifully decorated. Decorations were done with flags, electric lamps and models of Santa Clauses. After finishing religious services, Christian families cut Christmas cakes and exchanged sweets and chocolates. Special Christmas cakes were prepared in bakeries. The sale of Christmas cakes and sweets continued from the night of December 24 to the evening of December 25. On Christmas Eve on Tuesday, Christian families shopped late into the night. In the afternoon on Christmas Day, Christian children and families went to places of entertainment. In celebration of Christmas, parks' managements organised special swings, food stalls, aerial rider swings, mono-trains, horse rides, dodging cars, ghost bungalows, new indoor computerised games and battery cars for kids. This time, Christian families missed the fun at Allama Iqbal Park due to ongoing cricket matches and the sealing of the park for two weeks. The park will be opened to the public today (Thursday). A large number of Christian families visited Ayub Park, Joy Land, Patriata, Ladies Park, Shehbaz Sharif Park, Shakar Parian, Monument, Jasmine Garden and Daman-e-Koh where kids showed interest in swings and horse riding. The visitors enjoyed different meals and refreshments. Side-by-side enjoyments, Christian families complained about increased prices of food and drink and tickets for swings, aerial riders and dodging cars. Visitor Victor Masih said that a plate of dahi bhale and chana chaat was sold for Rs250, potato chips for Rs100, a small bottle of cold drink for Rs100 and the "substandard" soup was sold for Rs250 a cup. Daniel, a child, said that the dodging car and boating tickets continued to be charged at Rs600 per person, adding no swing had a ticket less than Rs200 per person. Another visitor, Iqbal Joseph said that the parking fee for cars and motorcycles was also increased, adding swings and amusements were plentiful, but ticket rates were too high. According to him, poor Christian children were deprived of electric swings as they had no other option except to enjoy free traditional iron swings in the broken corners of parks.

Husain Haqqani debunks myths about US influence on Pakistani policies
Former Pakistani ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani, has stated that American policies are not formulated on social media, and it is a misconception that a phone call from US officials will resolve everything. He added that the US does not shape its policies based on social media trends while expressing his personal desire for PTI founder Imran Khan to be released. Speaking to a local news channel on Wednesday, he said, "People mistakenly believe that US officials can make a phone call and fix everything. On human rights issues, US representatives often issue statements, but such statements have never led to anyone's release." The former ambassador to US further recalled that during Yousaf Raza Gillani's tenure as prime minister, he had held meetings with senior US officials regarding Dr Aafia Siddiqui's case. However, the US refused to progress discussions about her release. Earlier, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had refuted any claims of pressure, saying that the US is not exerting any influence on Pakistan regarding Imran Khan's release. "I don't believe the US is putting any pressure on Imran Khan's release. State-to-state relations go beyond such matters and social media posts," he maintained.

Govt, JUI-F reportedly resolve Madrassa Registration Bill dispute
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Senator Kamran Murtaza announced on Wednesday that the differences between the government and his party regarding the Madrassa Registration Bill have been resolved. Speaking to a local news channel, he confirmed that a gazette notification for the bill, which aligns with the 26th Constitutional Amendment, is expected to be issued within the next two days. The bill, which was previously passed by both houses of Parliament, had become a point of contention between JUI-F and the government. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the government reportedly agreed to all demands made by the Ittehad-e-Tanzeemat-e-Madaris, which was pushing for changes to the bill. The legislation aims to amend the procedure for registering madrassas, shifting the responsibility from the education ministry to the industries ministry. Despite being passed in parliament, the bill was returned by President Asif Ali Zardari due to legal objections. Under Article 75(2) of Pakistan’s Constitution, the bill must be reconsidered in a joint sitting of parliament if the president refuses to sign it. Senator Murtaza stated that he and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had finalised the draft of the legislation and that the issue would be resolved upon the issuance of the notification. Additionally, an amendment is expected to be made to the act, which will give madrassas the discretion to register either with the Ministry of Education or under the Society Registration Act. However, concerns remain about the potential repercussions of the bill. Sources report that President Zardari raised eight objections regarding the bill, particularly regarding the registration of madrassas under the Societies Act. The president expressed concerns that such a move could lead to sanctions from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and jeopardise Pakistan's international standing. He also highlighted the possibility of increased sectarianism and the proliferation of seminaries, which could destabilize law and order. He cautioned that these issues should be carefully considered during the drafting of the legislation. Despite these objections, Senator Murtaza is confident that the notification will be issued shortly, and the issue will be resolved to the satisfaction of all stakeholders involved.

Cabinet assures full medicine availability in Parachinar
The federal cabinet convened in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss ongoing relief efforts in Parachinar and evaluate proposals for restructuring government ministries to enhance efficiency and reduce expenditures. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over the meeting where the cabinet was informed that all essential medicines have been ensured at hospitals in Parachinar. Additionally, the PM's helicopter has been designated to facilitate the transportation of patients from Parachinar to other cities for medical care as relief activities in the area are ongoing, with collaborative efforts from both federal and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) governments. The session also focused on recommendations for right-sizing government ministries. The committee overseeing this policy presented its proposals for ministries such as Science and Technology, Commerce, Housing and Works, and National Food Security and Research. Key recommendations included complete closure of certain departments, mergers of some departments to streamline operations and reduction of staff by 30% in the secretariats of relevant ministries. If implemented, these measures are projected to save approximately Rs42.1 billion annually for the national exchequer. Cabinet members reviewed the recommendations and provided feedback. PM Shehbaz directed the committee to incorporate the Cabinet’s suggestions and submit a revised report for further deliberation. During the meeting, he expressed profound sorrow over the sectarian violence in Kurram District, which resulted in losses on both sides, while also criticising the K-P government's handling of the situation. "Both groups are armed in Kurram, but I do not wish to go into the details. The unfortunate part is that, at the time of this bloodshed, Islamabad was being attacked. Had the K-P government focused on it, the damage would have been less," he lamented. He concluded by saying, "I am not questioning anyone's intentions, but if the intent is otherwise, it will not benefit the country. I hope that PTI and the government will work together to find a solution in the best interest of Pakistan. We will move forward with sincerity, but both hands need to clap for success. I am hopeful that PTI will also work in the national interest."

Pakistan, Afghanistan hold key talks amid tensions over TTP allegations
Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, met with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul on Tuesday, marking a step toward enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The meeting comes amid strained relations due to frequent border skirmishes and Pakistan’s persistent demand for Afghanistan to take action against the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad claims the TTP uses Afghan soil to launch attacks in Pakistan, a charge that Kabul has consistently denied. Despite the tensions, both countries have recently engaged in diplomatic dialogue. The latest interaction follows a meeting between Afghan chargé d’affaires Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on December 9. This was preceded by a meeting between Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul, Obaid Nizamani, and Taliban Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoob. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Sadiq stated, “Met Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi today. Held wide-ranging discussions. Agreed to work together to further strengthen bilateral cooperation as well as for peace and progress in the region.” Ambassador Sadiq also held a separate meeting with Afghanistan's Acting Minister of Interior, Sirajuddin Haqqani, on Monday, where both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields to improve relations between the two neighboring nations. Earlier this month, Pakistan reappointed Ambassador Sadiq as its Special Representative for Afghanistan. Although no formal announcement was made, the appointment was confirmed by sources close to the development. This move came amid reports that the Afghan Taliban had begun relocating TTP members and their families away from the border region in Ghazni, a shift aimed at easing tensions with Pakistan. The reappointment and renewed diplomatic engagement reflect Pakistan’s ongoing desire to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue. On December 13, the Foreign Office emphasised that recent meetings with Afghanistan demonstrated Pakistan’s commitment to addressing concerns through constructive dialogue. Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch noted that counterterrorism efforts were at the forefront of the bilateral agenda, highlighting the importance of cooperation to address shared security challenges.

No complete ban on UAE visas for Pakistanis
The Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development was informed on Monday that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had not imposed a “complete denial” on issuing visas to Pakistani nationals, despite ongoing concerns regarding visa restrictions. The remarks came during a committee session chaired by Senator Zeeshan Khanzada, where the UAE's unofficial restrictions on employment visas were discussed. According to a press release from the Senate, the Secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development (OPHRD) clarified that while there had been a decline in the demand for unskilled labour, there were no restrictions on skilled workers. “As far as Dubai is concerned, there are no restrictions,” the secretary emphasised, noting that each country has its own set of objectives when it comes to labour demand. The secretary also highlighted that approximately 700,000 workers had migrated abroad this year, stressing the need to focus on sending more skilled workers. However, Senator Khanzada raised concerns over the ongoing issue, stating that many people were asking when the visa restrictions would be resolved. “Agents claim to meet all requirements when applying for visas, yet visas are still not being issued,” he said. The committee called for more action, with Khanzada urging authorities to provide updates on compliance and timelines to inform the public. He also suggested inviting Overseas Employment Promoters (OEPs) to future meetings to ensure proper checks and balances. The Foreign Office had previously dismissed the notion of a complete visa ban, with spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch clarifying that granting visas is a sovereign decision for the UAE. The UAE Consul General in Karachi, Dr Bakheet Ateeq Al Rumaithi, also rejected the impression of a visa ban, emphasising that Pakistan remains a priority for the UAE in business and investment. While improvements have been noted, Pakistani nationals still face significant challenges in the UAE’s visa process, a situation that remains a key point of discussion between the two governments.

PTI founding member announces movement for Imran Khan's release
Ali Khan, a founding leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and a long-time ally of Imran Khan, has announced a peaceful movement for the release of the former prime minister. Speaking at a press conference alongside other party leaders at the Swat Press Club, Khan emphasized that Imran Khan is currently imprisoned for an unjust cause and vowed to personally lead the movement for his release. Khan stated, “Imran Khan is imprisoned for crimes he did not commit, and I am announcing a peaceful movement for his release, which I will personally lead.” He revealed plans to set up hunger strike camps at Adiala Jail, Swat, and Peshawar in the near future, calling for the immediate release of all PTI workers and leaders detained during the November 26 protests in Islamabad. Further, Khan demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter, urging the release of innocent individuals who have been wrongfully imprisoned. He also expressed his disappointment with the state of corruption in the country, lamenting that, instead of seeing a reduction in corruption, it has only increased. “We have failed to create a corruption-free society,” Khan added. “No government, including the one led by the PTI, has managed to pass anti-corruption legislation in the assembly. Imran Khan is in jail not because of corruption, but because he has been wrongfully convicted. His release is our ultimate goal.” Earlier, Aleema Khan, the sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, hinted that the former prime minister would remain in jail for another three to four months. While talking to media outside Adiala Jail, she emphasized that if a verdict is passed in the 190 million-pound reference case, they will appeal to the High Court, where she believes relief can be expected. "I am fully convinced that Imran Khan will be convicted in the 190 million-pound reference case. However, when verdicts are issued by trial courts, relief is typically granted by the High Court. This case is absurd, accusing him for starting a charity project," Aleema Khan said.

Eighth mpox case confirmed in Pakistan
The health ministry on Friday confirmed the country’s eighth case of the mpox virus this year, involving a 32-year-old patient who had recently returned from the Gulf. The patient has been isolated and is receiving treatment, according to Health Ministry spokesperson Sajid Shah. “He is experiencing mild symptoms and is expected to recover soon,” Pakistan reported its first mpox case in August and has since implemented rigorous screening protocols at airports and border crossings to curb the virus's spread. While a mutated strain of mpox, clade I, prompted the World Health Organisation to declare a global health emergency in August, Pakistan has not yet reported any cases of this new variant. Clade I first emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has since spread internationally, prompting heightened monitoring and preventive measures.

Fazlur Rehman could become PM for 1-1.5 years: Miftah Ismail
Former finance minister and leader of the Awaam Pakistan Party Miftah Ismail has claimed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman could serve as Prime Minister of Pakistan for a year and a half. Speaking on Express News’ programme 'Center Stage', he stated that while discussions are ongoing, it is a positive development that negotiations are taking place, as they help avoid protests and violence. He highlighted that negotiations should continue. Ismail proposed that the only solution to Pakistan's political issues is holding elections and seeking the public’s opinion through their votes. He further remarked that few politicians in Pakistan hold the stature of Rehman, suggesting that the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) leader could serve as PM for a year and a half. On economic matters, Ismail criticised the government's stance on privatisation, claiming that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) could have been privatised, but the government lacked the intention to do so. He further attributed the recent upward trend in the stock market to a reduction in interest rates, stressing that the market would continue to rise independently, with no role played by the government. Ismail also pointed out that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had not implemented any new taxes or pension reforms. He accused the PM of prioritising political interests over necessary economic reforms. In terms of imports, the former minister noted a 7% decrease, but he highlighted that the current tax rates are extremely high. He warned that without positive economic indicators, investment in the country would not increase.

Pakistan developing long-range missiles capable of reaching US: White House official
A senior White House official on Thursday said nuclear-armed Pakistan is developing long-range ballistic missile capabilities that eventually could allow it to strike targets outside of South Asia, including in the United States. In his stunning revelation about the onetime close US partner, Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said Islamabad's conduct raised "real questions" about the aims of its ballistic missile program. "Candidly, it's hard for us to see Pakistan's actions as anything other than an emerging threat to the United States," Finer told the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace audience. "Pakistan has developed increasingly sophisticated missile technology, from long-range ballistic missile systems to equipment that would enable the testing of significantly larger rocket motors," he said. If those trends continue, Finer said, "Pakistan will have the capability to strike targets well beyond South Asia, including in the United States." His speech came a day after Washington announced a new round of sanctions related to Pakistan's ballistic missile development program, including on the state-run defense agency that oversees the program.
