The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday forecast medium to high flood in Chenab and Kabul rivers in the wake of expected rain in Kashmir, upper Punjab, Potohar region, upper K-P, northeast Balochistan and southeast Sindh. In its alert, the NDMA advised the people in the vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and prepare an evacuation plan for their own safety. It asked the people to evacuate immediately if orders are issued by local authorities in case of floods. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) the weather in most parts of the country would remain hot and humid during the next 24 hours, with chances of rain with thunderstorms at scattered places. During the last 24 hours, the PMD said, the highest rainfall in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was recorded in Balakot with the downpour measuring at 35 millimetres; besides 27mm in Saidu Sharif, and 26mm in Malam Jabba. Rawalkot in Azad Kashmir also received 13 mm rain. In the wake of the forecast, the NDMA tech team and the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) said that water flows were likely to increase in all major rivers and their tributaries from July 3, with medium to high floods in Chenab at Marala and in Kabul at Nowshera between July 4 and 7. The NDMA said in a news release that authorities were working closely with the federal and provincial departments to ensure preparedness and response to a potential emergency and advised the public to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities. The press release said that the people were advised to stay informed and download ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ mobile app for timely alerts and closely monitor weather reports and updates on the flood situation and follow instructions.
