Unidentified miscreants managed to break through the security net at the Sheikh Zayed Airport in Rahim Yar Khan and walk all the way to the airport’s runway where they stole coils from the transformer installed on the airport’s runway, sources told The Express Tribune. They cut coils and valuable wires from the transformer supplying electricity to the runway and the air traffic control system at the airport, they said. The miscreants reached the runway of the airport after cutting the fence which they accessed from Basti Manzoorabad side of the airport, said the sources. The air traffic control system was run on generators for 10 to 12 hours during the power outage, they said. Airport Manager Waheed Abbas refused to comment on the incident. According to sources, a report had been filed with the Airport Police Station. The Sheikh Zayed International Airport is an important airport in terms of its geographical location. Three months ago, the barrier installed at the entrance to and exit from the airport on the Norewali Phatak side had also been stolen by thieves. Published in The Express Tribune, May 23rd, 2023.
