The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has condemned in the strongest terms the arrest of anchorpersons Aftab Iqbal and Imran Riaz Khan. In a statement issued on Thursday, the council noted that attempts to curb the freedom of expression cannot be tolerated. CPNE President Kazim Khan demanded that the government immediately release journalists. "Difference of opinion cannot be crushed in a civilized society,” he said. He said the CPNE in its media freedom report highlighted a number of times such attempts to punish journalists for expressing their views. Authorities swung into action and started a crackdown against the PTI supporters after the arrest of former premier Imran Khan from the premises of the Islamabad High Court on May 9.
