A 55-year-old labourer died during a police raid on Sunday. According to sources, ASI Zakir and a contingent of police officers raided the house of labourer Riaz Sheikh in the area of Chak 21-14/L. The police alleged that his son, Waseem, was in possession of an unlicenced pistol. Allegedly torturing the labourer, the police took him with them in search of Waseem. Due to the assault, his condition worsened, he suffered a heart attack and died before receiving any first aid. The local sources said that after the labourer’s sudden death, the ASI forcibly moved the body to the Shahkot police station. Later, the labourer’s widow was called to the police station and threatened into accepting a settlement. According to the agreement, the police were not responsible for the death and the heirs were not pursuing legal action. However, Chichawatni DSP Sajid Mehmood Gondal and Shahkot Police Station SHO Ashraf Bhatti rejected the allegations in their statement. Published in The Express Tribune, December 12th, 2022.
