The Punjab agriculture department urged farmers not to believe in the rumours being spread through social media about black wheat. According to a press release issued in Multan on Thursday, the agriculture department urged farmers to use the seed of only approved varieties by the Agriculture Department of Punjab for wheat cultivation. Legal action was also being initiated against those who were involved in selling unapproved black wheat. The press release added that the process of wheat cultivation was continuing in Punjab, and black-coloured wheat was being advertised on social media by some vested interests. The farmers were informed by the Department that black wheat had been analyzed at the ISO-certified laboratory of the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad, and black-coloured wheat’s advertised properties and additional nutritional claims on social media were found to be completely false and baseless. The farmers were advised by the Agriculture Department to cultivate wheat by using only the varieties of seeds approved by the Department. All of the approved varieties of seeds were available at the Punjab Seed Corporation and private seed companies. The spokesperson further said in the press release that legal action was also being initiated against those who were involved in selling unapproved black wheat seed.
