Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday said the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had tracked down and identified the people, who had leaked the tax records of army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s family members. Speaking during a private TV news channel’s talk show, the minister added that he had received an interim report on the leaked tax records and expected the final one to be submitted to him by tonight. Dar told the host of the show that the people behind the leaks had been traced to two cities -- Rawalpindi and Lahore. The minister said that the law did not permit the disclosure of anyone’s tax returns without a court order, may it be the army chief or an ordinary person. “This is a violation of our system and law. The system’s effectiveness has been called into question,” he added. Dar told the host that some of the individuals, who were authorised to look at the income tax records, might be behind the leaks. He added that there was a “circle” in Rawalpindi where assessments took place. . A day earlier, Dar took notice of the "illegal and unwarranted" leakage of tax information of the army chief's family members.
