PTI challenges Hamza Shehbaz' election as Punjab CM

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday initiated a legal battle against Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz, filing two petitions with the Lahore High Court (LHC) against him. The first of the two petitions seeks Hamza's removal from the post while the other for getting declared null and void the contest for the coveted slot held in Punjab Assembly on April 16. The petitioner, senior advocate Mushtaq Ahmed Mohal, filed his petition for Hamza's removal from the post after the interpretation of the top court on Article 63-A of the Constitution. He contended that after the interpretation, Hamza had lost his constitutional right of remaining in power. He requested the court to restrain the chief minister from working at his office. Also read: PTI to challenge Hamza’s election as Punjab CM Mohal, in his plea, also pointed to the recent verdict of the Supreme Court on defecting lawmakers, saying the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader had lost a majority in the assembly as a result. He implored the court to declare all measures and actions being adopted by the CM as illegal and unconstitutional, while also asking for the bureaucracy including the chief secretary to be restrained from obeying his orders. In the second petition, PTI's Sibtain Khan stated that lawmakers of the PTI were thrown out of Punjab Assembly on Hamza's directions. As a result, he added, the lawmakers were deprived of their right to vote on April 16, when the contest was held. In spite of the fact that the assembly secretary had restrained private members from entering the assembly, Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari was reported to have invited over 300 private members that day. The please also stated that PTI lawmaker Ahmad Saleem was shown in the list of those who had exercised their right to vote. The MPA requested the court to declare, in light of the highlighted points, the election of the chief minister null and void.
