Wildlife force for Punjab proposed

The wildlife protection department in Punjab is likely to be turned into a force, while the forests of Chichawatni and Pipli mountain will be declared as a national park. Provincial Minister for Wildlife and Fisheries Syed Samsam Bukhari said after a meeting of Punjab Wildlife Board that trophy hunting of different species of deer would be initiated like Punjab Urial and special permits would be issued for the purpose to local and foreign hunters. The hunting schedule for partridges will be changed. The minister thanked Pakistan Army and Rangers for their cooperation in protecting wildlife. Announcing the decision to declare the forests of Chichawatni and Pipli as a national park, he said measures would be taken to protect wildlife in the areas. He said it had been decided that the wildlife protection department would be reorganised as a force that would be provided modern weapons and vehicles. Proposals in this regard will be put before the provincial cabinet. The department will auction its surplus animals. The hunting calendar for different types of birds was also discussed. Samsam Bukhari said rules were being worked out for a regulated hunting programme. Some issues are being referred to the Foreign Office and climate change ministry, while some proposals will be presented to the provincial cabinet for approval. He said half the proceeds from trophy hunting would go to local partners. It has been decided that wild boar will be declared a trophy hunting animal. The minister said measures would also be taken to promote ecotourism in Punjab. Trophy hunting will benefit the local communities, stakeholders and the department. It will also help save endangered wildlife species and increase their population. He also said the rules and regulations for private game reserves were in the final stages of approval.
