Motorways closed as thick fog blankets Punjab

The National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) advised citizens to confirm road conditions and flight schedules before departing for the journey as moderate to dense fog has engulfed the provincial capital, motorways and highways across Punjab. Travel advisory issued by the NH&MP showed various sectors of Lahore-Islamabad M-2 Motorway were closed in night owing to poor visibility in result of dense fog. It warned that visibility was dropped to 200 metres at 8:00 pm which was expected to reduce further in late hours. Similarly, moderate to dense fog was recorded at Lahore-Abdul Hakim Motorway (M-3), the moderate fog was witnessed on Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway (M-1), Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad-Multan Motorway (M-4) and Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M-5). Poor visibility was also recorded at National Highway (N-5), the report indicates. CAA flight statistics showed that dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed at the Allama Iqbal International Airport owing to poor weather conditions. Flight operation remained disrupted for several hours in wee hours on Thursday owing to poor visibility due to unfavourable conditions. Published in The Express Tribune, December 25th, 2020.
