Myanmar military extends emergency, promises vote in 2 years

YANGON: Myanmar’s junta chief said Sunday that elections would be held and a state of emergency lifted by August 2023, extending the military’s initial timeline given when it deposed Aung San Suu Kyi six months ago.

The country has been in turmoil since the army ousted the civilian leader in February, launching a bloody crackdown on dissent that has killed more than 900 people according to a local monitoring group.

A resurgent virus wave has also amplified havoc, with many hospitals empty of pro-democracy medical staff, and the World Bank has forecast the economy will contract by up to 18 percent.

In a televised address junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said “we will accomplish the provisions of the state of emergency by August 2023.”

“I pledge to hold multiparty elections without fail,” he added.

The general’s announcement would place Myanmar in the military’s grip for nearly two and a half years — instead of the initial one-year timeline the army announced days after the coup.

The State Administration Council — as the junta calls itself — also announced in a separate statement that Min Aung Hlaing had been appointed as the prime minister of the “caretaker government”.

The army has justified its power grab by alleging massive fraud during 2020 elections won by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy in a landslide, and has threatened to dissolve the party.

Last week the junta cancelled the results of the polls, announcing it had uncovered over 11 million instances of voter fraud.

Suu Kyi has been detained since February 1 and faces an eclectic raft of charges, from flouting coronavirus restrictions to illegally importing walkie talkies, which could see her jailed for more than a decade.

While the race ended in just 10 seconds, netizens took note of Blake’s reaction when Browning took the lead.

Instead of looking towards the finish line, the second-fastest man in the world turned his head towards Browing, who had taken the lead.

Pakistan registers 4,858 new COVID-19 cases with 40 deaths

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan continues to record a surge in COVID-19 cases as the country has registered 4,858 new infections over the last 24 hours, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said Monday.

The NCOC said that the country’s number of overall confirmed cases has risen to 1,039,695, including 943,020 recoveries, adding that the positivity rate of infections was recorded at 8.61 per cent.

The COVID-19 claimed 40 more lives across the country in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 23,462, the NCOC said, adding that 3,441 people are in critical condition.

56,414 tests were conducted during the said period.

Sindh province is the most affected region of the country with 385,414 infections, followed by the Punjab province which has reported 357,735 cases.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains third on the list with 144,848 cases. Islamabad, 88,093, Balochistan, 30,502, AJK, 24,891 and GB have reported 8,212 new infections, so far.

To curb the spread of the disease, Pakistan also expedited the pace of vaccination and administered overall 30,590,183 COVID-19 vaccine doses on August 2, including 24,086,196 partial doses and 6,503,987 two doses.

Pakistan ‘watchful, but not concerned’ as India assumes UNSC presidency for August

India, which has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August, is set to organise three high-level meetings focussing on maritime security, counter-terrorism and promotion of multilateralism, according to diplomatic sources. India took over the presidency from France on Sunday according to the system rotation in alphabetical order of the member states’ official names in English. The South Asian nation began its two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on January 1, this year. This will be India’s first presidency during its 2021-22 tenure “We will be watchful, but not concerned,” Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN Munir Akram said when asked for his reaction by APP correspondent. The Taliban have gained a lot of ground as US and Nato forces withdrew from Afghanistan. On multilateralism, India, among other elements, is expected to highlight its bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council in the context of the reform of the 15-member body. Ambassador Akram said, "We will be watchful and take steps so that India does not compromise its positions" on UN reform, Afghanistan and terrorism. "Pakistan strongly opposes any expansion in the permanent membership of the Security Council," he added.

Pakistan Navy, PMSA rescue crew members of vessel stranded off Karachi coast

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) conducted a joint operation at 180 Nautical Miles south of Karachi and rescued the crew of MV SUVARI H, according to a statement issued by Pakistan Navy Public Relations on Sunday.

According to the press release, the  operation was carried out in the exclusive economic zone of the Pakistani sea in which the cargo ship sank due to strong winds and tide

“Emergency messages were sent by the crew before sinking, the messages were received by a nearby cargo ship, MT Elan Vital, and five crew members were immediately rescued,” it added.

Upon receiving the information, Pakistan Navy aircraft on air surveillance was directed to the sinking site and a PMSA aircraft and a ship were also immediately dispatched for assistance. Pakistan Navy and PMSA aircraft initially identified eight crew members and later five more crew members were rescued with the help of a life raft, read the press statement.

So far, 15 out of 18 crew members have been rescued as a result of the efforts of the Pakistan Navy and PMSA, while Pakistan Navy and PMSA are conducting search operations through ships and aircraft to find three other members.

All crew of the sunk ship belongs to Syria, the ship was carrying cargo from India to Somalia, the press release concluded.
