Pakistan reports 24 deaths, 1,277 COVID-19 cases

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reported 24 more deaths over the last 24 hours by COVID-19 as the total number of fatalities has reached 22,345.

According to the latest figures issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the number of positive cases has surged to 959,685 after the inclusion of 1,277 fresh infections during the said period.

The number of active cases in the country stands at 31,910.

The country conducted 46,941 tests in the past 24 hours out of which 1,277 Pakistanis were tested positive for the disease. The COVID positivity ratio was recorded at 2.27%

Overall 905,430 Pakistanis have recovered their health back from the COVID-19 pandemic, while 1,863 are still said to be critical.

As of July 2, as many as 13,234,851 people have been partially vaccinated against the deadly infection while 3,121,648 fully vaccinated, the NCOC said.

A total of 16,356,499 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered across Pakistan thus far.

Pakistan is likely to receive 2.5 million doses of Moderna’s mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine doses on Friday (today), said sources.

Pakistan will receive a shipment of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine through COVAX — the World Health Organisation’s global shared vaccine programme on Friday.

The new shipment would end the troubles of overseas Pakistanis for getting US-made COVID-19 jabs prior to travelling abroad.

Sydney braces for rise in COVID-19 cases as Delta outbreak worsens

SYDNEY: Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales (NSW), on Friday warned residents to brace an increase in COVID-19 infections over the next few days as it reported the biggest daily rise in locally acquired cases recorded so far this year.

Country-wide, Australia is fighting outbreaks of the highly infections Delta variant simultaneously in three state capital cities, meaning nearly half of all Australians are currently under strict orders to stay at home.

NSW capital Sydney, Australia’s largest city and home to a fifth of the country’s 25 million population, is half-way through a two-week lockdown imposed in a bid to contain the Delta variant.

Thirty-one local cases were reported in NSW on Friday, so far the biggest daily rise in cases during the latest outbreak and for 2021. Total infections have grown to more than 200 since the first case was detected more than two weeks ago.

“We are anticipating there could be an increase in numbers over the next few days, then hopefully early next week we should see the impact of the lockdown really turning and having a positive impact,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters.

Queensland officials said lockdown rules will be eased in parts of Queensland from Friday, although they have been extended in state capital Brisbane and a neighbouring region for another day after three new cases were reported.

Stay-at-home orders in Perth and Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory, will be reviewed on Friday.

NSW’s warning about a rise in cases comes as Australia’s national cabinet met on Friday amid calls from states to limit the numbers of international arrivals until the country reaches high vaccination coverage.

The national cabinet, the group of federal and state government leaders, was formed during the early days of the pandemic to coordinate the country’s response to COVID-19.

Lockdowns, swift contact tracing and tough social distancing rules have helped Australia to suppress prior outbreaks, but the fast-moving Delta strain has alarmed authorities amid a sluggish nationwide vaccination drive.

The rollout, mired in confusion and frustration due to frequent changes in medical advice for the AstraZeneca (AZN.L) vaccine, has become a flashpoint in relations between the federal government and state leaders. read more

State leaders of Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia are urging the federal government to lower the cap of international arrivals from around 6,000 a week, arguing the Delta variant was straining their hotel quarantine system.

Most recent virus outbreaks in Australia have been traced to leaks in hotel quarantine.

WATCH: Student runs Windows 11 on an old Windows Phone

It hasn’t even been a whole week, and Windows 11 has already been successfully ported over to a smartphone. A very committed student of engineering, Gustave Monce, published a video to YouTube showing the latest developer preview of Windows 11 running on a Lumia 950 XL, one of the first devices to ship with Windows 10 Mobile.

Windows 11 adapts surprisingly well for the 5.7-inch display, but the same can’t be said for the speed of animations. While Windows 11 is usable on the Lumia 950 XL, it doesn’t look like something you’d want to pull out of your pocket every day. But that’s not really the point. This is the latest achievement in a five-year hobby of tinkering with getting full versions of Windows running on Windows Phone devices.

 “It all started really 5 years ago, when Windows 10 Mobile was near obsolescence,” says Monce, speaking to The Verge. Monce teamed up with Bingxing Wang, a fellow engineer, to bring the idea of running full Windows on these phones to life.

“As time went on and we started talking about it, discussion groups formed and in turn we had a community of people interested in running full Windows 10 on Lumia 950s,” explains Monce. “We’re now basically a team of about 15 people, and we’ve made a lot of progress.”

The team has ported and reverse-engineered drivers to get Windows 11 running on a Windows Phone and even written their own ones, too. “I wouldn’t say we were quite fast to do it, we took four years to get to the current state, but it’s actually impressive we got here with not much documentation on hand,” says the student. “Because of all that work for Windows 10 and the work we previously did to support Windows 10X, Windows 11 was a natural path forward, and really didn’t take much to get going.”

The student and the team have built a dedicated site for their project, and it includes tools, guides, and documentation on bringing Windows 10 and Windows 11 to these old Windows Phones. Not everything works perfectly, with the cameras failing to function, a hit to battery life, and calls / SMS occasionally breaking due to Microsoft’s OS changes. It’s more of a fun project to see just how far engineers and developers can push the devices that Microsoft has abandoned.

Sindh cabinet reshuffle likely today: sources

KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet is expected to undergo a reshuffle on Friday as Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has decided to add few more ministers to his cabinet, ARY News reported, citing sources.

Sources privy to the development said that CM Murad Ali Shah is expected to announce a cabinet reshuffle today, potentially replacing several ministers and picking up some new faces.

This decision has been taken after consultation with the Pakistan Peoples Party’s leadership, the sources said, adding that Sindh Governor Imran Ismail will administer the oath to the newly inducted ministers at the Governor House on Saturday.

Earlier on February 3, in a major reshuffle in the current cabinet of the Sindh Government, stalwarts of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had been given additional responsibilities.

The former Provincial Minister of Sindh for Local Government, Public Health Engineering and Rural Development, and Katchi Abadies, Saeed Ghani’s had been awarded a role in the Literacy and Education departments, he would continue to work on his pre-existing role in Labour department, the official notification read.

Provincial Minister of Sindh for Local Government, Forests and Religious Affairs, Nasir Hussain Shah had been assigned an additional position in the Information Ministry of Sindh.

Rape case of UK-returned woman in Lahore takes a new turn

LAHORE: The rape case of a Lahore woman, who had recently returned from the United Kingdom (UK) for attending her father’s funeral, took a new turn after the police made progress in the ongoing investigation, ARY News reported on Thursday.

The UK-returned woman, Amaan, had earlier claimed for being subjected to rape by the son of her father’s close friend when she went to his home in Wahdat Colony over having a dispute with her step-mother.

Police had immediately taken action and arrested the suspected man named Faizan following the woman’s complaint.

During the interrogation, Faizan revealed that he wanted to stop Amaan from consuming drugs but she decided to teach him a lesson and then levelled rape allegations against him.

Police officials told the media that the complainant woman has rejected to undergo the medical examination while the national identity card and mobile number she provided for First Information Report (FIR) were also incorrect.

Inflation clocks in at 9.7pc YoY in June

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) clocked in at 9.7% on a year-on-year basis in June 2021 as compared to 10.9% in the previous month and 8.6% in June 2020, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) report.

The CPI inflation urban increased by 9.7% on a year-on-year basis in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 10.8% in the previous month and 7.6% in June 2020.

On a month-on-month basis, it decreased by 0.4% in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 0.2% in the previous month and an increase of 0.7% in June 2020.

CPI inflation rural increased by 9.7% on a year-on-year basis in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 10.9% in the previous month and 10.0% in June 2020. On month-on-month basis, it decreased by 0.1% in June 2021 as compared to a decrease of 0.03% in the previous month and an increase of 1.0% in June 2020.

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation on YoY increased by 17.6% in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 19.7% a month earlier and an increase of 11.5% in June 2020. On MoM basis, it decreased by 0.4% in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 0.8% a month earlier and an increase of 1.4% in June 2020.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation on YoY basis increased by 20.9% in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 19.4% a month earlier and an increase of 0.9% in June 2020. WPI inflation on MoM basis increased by 0.9% in June 2021 as compared to an increase of 0.3% a month earlier and a decrease of 0.3% in corresponding month i.e. June 2020.

Increased: Tomatoes (28.94%), Onions (14.97%), Eggs (4.37%), Vegetables (3.11%), Meat (2.85%), Gur (1.85%), Wheat (1.52%), Vegetable ghee (1.36%), Pulse masoor (1.26%) and Mustard oil (1.21%)

Decreased: Chicken (36.86%), Fruits (20.07%), Pulse moong (6.10%), Fish (1.91%), Pulse gram (1.82%) and Pulse mash (1.24%).

NON-FOOD

Increased: Liquefied Hydrocarbons (26.26%), Motor fuel (3.84%), Personal Effects (2.47%) and Construction items (0.73%).

Decreased: Transport Services (0.58%).

YEAR-ON-YEAR: Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. June, 2020 are given below:

Heatwave hits many cities in Pakistan

An intense heatwave has swept Pakistan, with temperatures reaching above 40 degrees Celsius in many cities on Thursday. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the maximum temperature of 48˚C was recorded in Sindh's Jacobabad. It said that Kashmore, Qambar Shahdadkot, Shikarpur, Larkana, Sanghar, and Shaheed Benazirabad districts recorded average temperatures ranging from 44˚C to 46˚C. The Met department said the current heat spell will end on Friday, with rain and wind expected in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, K-P, Islamabad, and parts of Punjab and Balochistan.
