One more session of PCNS to be held before Eid: sources

ISLAMABAD: One more session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) will be held before Eid where recommendations will be reviewed for the federal government, citing sources, ARY News reported on Thursday.

Today’s session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) was continued for eight hours in Islamabad under the chair of the National Assembly (NA) Speaker Asad Qaiser to discuss regional developments including the Afghanistan peace process.

The Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence (DG-ISI) Lt Gen Faiz Hameed gave a comprehensive briefing to the participants of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS).

The meeting was attended by the federal ministers, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, DG ISI, Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR) Major General Babar Iftikhar, head of national security institutions, chief ministers of all four provinces, opposition lawmakers and others.

According to the information ministry’s statement, such sessions play important role in building national consensus on national issues. During a question and answer session in the briefing, the participants have also presented their suggestions which would be considered as an important part of Pakistan’s security policy.

The parliamentary and political leaders expressed satisfaction at the briefing besides conveying wishes for peace, progress and prosperity in Afghanistan.

NHA increases Karachi-Hyderabad motorway toll tax

KARACHI: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has increased the toll tax rate for commuters using Karachi-Hyderabad (M9) motorway, ARY News reported on Thursday.

According to revised rates, the rate of car toll has been increased from Rs 1.71 per km to Rs 1.99 per km, while that of the wagon has been increased from Rs 2.85 to Rs 3.32 per km.

Furthermore, the bus fare has been increased from Rs 5.70 to Rs 6.65 per km and the toll tax for trucks has been increased from Rs 7.67 to Rs 8.95 per km. The toll tax for the trailer has been increased from Rs 9.77 to Rs 11.40 per km.

The toll tax for cars will be Rs300 from now on after an increase in rates.

On the other hand, the All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association has rejected the increase in the toll tax rate.

Faisalabad doctors remove ‘blade’ from infant’s stomach without surgery

FAISALABAD: Doctors have successfully removed a blade from an infant’s stomach without surgery in Samandri city of Faisalabad district, ARY News reported on Thursday.

The doctors pulled the blade out from the stomach of a four-month-old boy without performing any surgery by using an endoscope.

Doctors told the media that the son of a factory worker had swallowed a blade one month ago while the family remained unaware about the happening. The infant named Ahad Ali was taken to the Children Hospital after the family found him spitting blood.

They added that the blade was removed during endoscopy by the doctors without surgery.

Earlier in April 2019, a hybrid angiography of a minor girl had been successfully conducted in Children Hospital Lahore.

The doctors had stitched the hole in heart of the five-year-old girl without performing surgery on it, through hybrid angiography.

Previously, a bypass operation of children was carried out to stitch their hearts, however, Dr Masood Sadiq and his team had completed the operation without performing surgery.

Govt, opposition on same page over national security matters: Sheikh Rasheed

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed on Thursday said that the government and the opposition were on the same page over national security matters, ARY News reported.

Talking exclusively to ARY News program “Power Play”, Sheikh Rasheed said that he was impressed with the opposition’s behavior during a session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) in Islamabad today.

 

He maintained that Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed briefed the meeting about the situation in Afghanistan, Kashmir, international affairs and national security matters.

The DG ISI briefed the meeting for over one and half hours, he said, adding that the views of lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches were same over the national security matters. The interior minister said that the entire nation stands with the Pakistan Army.

 

Responding to a question about New Delhi’s nefarious designs, Sheikh Rasheed feared India could use Afghan soil against Pakistan. He said that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan. The interior minister said that they wanted all groups in Afghanistan to resolve the conflicts through dialogues.

New shipment of Covid vaccine to end troubles of overseas Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is likely to receive 2.5 million doses of Moderna’s mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine doses on Friday (tomorrow), citing sources, ARY News reported on Thursday.

Pakistan will receive a shipment of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine through COVAX — the World Health Organisation’s global shared vaccine programme on Friday.

The new shipment will end the troubles of overseas Pakistanis for getting US-made COVID-19 jabs prior to travelling abroad.

The shipment will arrive in Islamabad which will be administered to overseas Pakistanis and people who are suffering from chronic diseases on a priority basis, sources told ARY News. The US-made Moderna vaccine is also approved by Saudi Arabia, Gulf states, Europe and the United States (US).

The Covax had also provided stocks of Pfizer-​BioNTech and Astrazeneca vaccines including 100,600 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech and 1,238,000 doses of Astrazeneca vaccine. A shipment of 18 million doses of coronavirus vaccine had also arrived in Pakistan, sources added.

On June 29, the United States (US) had announced to send 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine to Pakistan, confirmed White House press secretary Jen Psaki. He had said the doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are being sent to Pakistan to help Islamabad in the fight against the pandemic.

Pakistan has primarily used Chinese vaccines – Sinopharm, CanSinoBio and Sinovac- in its inoculation drive.

Gold price rises in domestic market

KARACHI: Gold prices continued their upward trend as the per tola price of the precious metal on Thursday witnessed an increase of Rs 500 to Rs 108,500 in the domestic market, ARY News reported.

Sharing the price of the precious metal, All Pakistan Jewelers Manufacturers Association Chairman Muhammad Arshad said that the rate of 10 grams of gold increased by Rs429 to Rs 93,021.

In the international market, gold prices rose on Thursday as concerns over the more infectious Delta variant of COVID-19 bolstered its safe-haven appeal, ahead of U.S. jobs data seen as crucial to the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook.

Spot gold gained 0.4% to $1,776.40 per ounce by 0710 GMT and U.S. gold futures climbed 0.4% to $1,776.50.

Silver rose 0.4% to $26.22 per ounce, palladium fell 1% to $2,751.5 and platinum gained 0.1% to $1,073.5.

Dollar

The rupee appreciated by Rs10.51 against the United States (US) dollar in the interbank currency market in the fiscal year 2020-21.

On Wednesday, the local unit closed at Rs157.54 against the greenback on the last day (June 30) of the fiscal year, 20 paisas or 0.13 per cent stronger than the previous close of 157.74 in the interbank market.

The rupee rose by 6.2 per cent or Rs10.51 in the currency market during the last fiscal year.

Case filed against two ghosts for harassing a man

VADODARA: A complaint has been filed against two ghosts by Jambughoda police in India’s Gujarat after they reportedly harassed a man.

A 35-year-old man came to the police officials for filing a weird complaint that he was confronted by a gang of ghosts while two of them gave death threats. He then requested the cops at the police station to save his life from the ghosts.

According to Indian media reports, the man was a resident of hamlet in Jambughoda taluka of the Panchmahals district.

The complaint of the man, who appeared to be mentally disturbed, was registered by the police on Sunday to prevent the complainant from further distress. The application stated that he was busy working on his farm when the gang of ghosts approached him.

A police officer told the media that he was on duty on the day and found the man very agitated and behaving abnormally. The cop added that his complaint was registered to help him calm down.

Later, the local police contacted the complainant’s family to seek his details. The family told them that the man was undergoing psychiatric treatment and had not taken his medicine for the last 10 days.

One day later, the police learnt from his family that he fled to the police stations where he feels safe from being approached by the ghosts.

The police asked the family to take care of his medicine for stopping the psychotic episodes again.
