Proceedings in the Toshakhana case were adjourned until June 3 after Bushra Bibi, wife of PTI founder Imran Khan, failed to appear before the court. The hearing, presided over by Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand, was held on Saturday at Adiala Jail. While Imran Khan was produced before the court, Bushra Bibi opted not to attend in protest, citing the authorities' refusal to allow her a meeting with her husband earlier on Tuesday. Despite waiting for four hours, the court did not see Bushra Bibi appear in the courtroom, drawing the judge's ire.

Govt declares Baloch terror groups, organizations as ‘Fitna al Hindustan’
The federal government on Saturday ordered all state institutions to refer to militant groups operating in its restive Balochistan province as “Fitna al Hindustan”, accusing India of sponsoring a proxy war through these insurgents. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior on Saturday, the move stems from “the involvement of some organizations and groups in terrorist activities in Balochistan, which are detrimental to Islamic faith, the sovereignty of Pakistan, and its customary traditions.” The notification further stated that the new designation is intended to reflect “the true nature and ideology” of these groups and their “nefarious designs” allegedly sponsored by India. Read more: Pakistan labels TTP as 'Fitna al-Khawarij' to expose its true ideology “All government entities are directed to start the above practice immediately,” the notification said, underscoring a concerted effort to reframe the narrative around insurgent violence in the province. The announcement came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused India of escalating indirect aggression after what he described as its defeat in a recent security operation dubbed “Marka-e-Haq”. Accuding India of intensifying a proxy terrorism campaign in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, he said, “India, after suffering strategic setbacks, has resorted to indirect aggression”. “But Pakistan will thwart all such nefarious designs and stand resolute against Fitna al Hindustan and its proxies.” A day earlier, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir had also addressed the ongoing unrest in Balochistan, stating that insurgent groups there were not indigenous but rather acting on behalf of foreign interests. “These terrorists are not Baloch. They are agents of disruption sponsored by India,” the army chief said, reiterating the armed forces’ stance that separatist violence in the province is externally instigated. Also read: Won't accept India's hegemony: COAS The government’s decision to adopt a new label for Balochistan-based insurgents mirrors a similar move last year, when the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was officially designated “Fitna al-Khawarij”. At that time, the Ministry of Interior said the term “Khariji” was chosen to expose what it described as the TTP’s misrepresentation of Islam.

IHC annuls transfer order of service tribunal
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has partially accepted a petition filed by some district and sessions judges and declared the Islamabad District Judicial Service Tribunal's (IDJST) decision to send back deputation judges from the district judiciary null and void. The IDJST tribunal comprising three IHC judges Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Babar Sattar, and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khanhad issued the order to repatriate the judges in the district judiciary serving on deputation as tribunal members. Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Judge Abual Hasanat Muhammad Zulqarnain and others had challenged the decision in the IHC, whose single-member bench comprising Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir announced the verdict in the case. The court held that the tribunal does not have suo motu powers against the tribunal itself. It clarified that it is not deciding the case on merits, and that the tribunal will decide the merits of the case. The IDJST on March 21 annulled a notification of the Ministry of Law with regard to reconstitution of the tribunala decision that showed a growing chasm among the judges in the capital's high court. The ministry on March 18 notified a new tribunal consisting of three IHC judges nominated by Acting Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro was to head the IDJST while it also comprised Justice Muhammad Azam Khan and Justice Inaam Ameen Minhas. However, the existing tribunal comprising Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan and Justice Babar Sattar declared the notification illegal in an order that also allowed the appeal of senior civil judge, Muhammad Shabbir. In its order, the tribunal noted that there was no need for its reconstitution as there is no difference between the tribunal chairman and the members. The IHC in its order stated that after the change of the tribunal, Justice Tariq Jahangiri was no longer authorized to decide the matter. The court added that the powers of the tribunal are limited and not equivalent to those of a high court judge.

At least 11 killed as rains hit Punjab, K-P
At least 11 people have lost their lives and nearly 50 others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents across Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), officials said on Friday, as the latest spell of pre-monsoon rains continues to wreak havoc across parts of the country, Radio Pakistan reported. According to the K-P Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), eight people were killed and 21 others injured in various districts of the province following heavy downpours and strong winds. In Punjab, PDMA reported three fatalities and 25 injuries due to rain-triggered incidents. The report added that two individuals were struck by lightning in Mianwali and Attock, while a third died after a building collapsed in Multan. The violent weather has thrown daily life into disarray since last week, grounding flights, damaging infrastructure, and prompting rain emergencies in several urban centres. Power outages were reported across multiple cities as high winds toppled trees and snapped transmission lines. Read more: 14 perish as massive storms pummel Punjab Last week, at least 14 people were reported dead and over 92 others injured in Punjab as storms and gale-force winds swept through major cities, causing widespread damage to homes, vehicles, and public property. ECP tells SC PTI was never party to reserved seats case
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has submitted its written statement to the constitutional bench (CB) of the Supreme Court hearing review petitions in the reserved seats case, stating that the PTI was never a party to the case before the SC. On January 13, 2024, a three-member SC bench upheld the ECP’s December 22, 2023 order declaring the PTI’s intra-party polls null and void. As a consequence of the SC verdict and its “misinterpretation” by the ECP, the PTI candidates had to contest the February 8, 2024, general elections as independents. Eighty such independent candidates reached the National Assembly and later joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) in an apparent bid to claim reserved seats for women and minorities. The ECP, however, refused to allocate the seats to the party, a decision that the SIC challenged in the Supreme Court. On July 12, 2024, a full bench of the apex court, through a majority of 8 to 5, resurrected the PTI as a parliamentary party, noting that 39 of the lawmakers who had submitted certificates of their affiliation with the PTI along with their nomination papers were already PTI lawmakers. The SC ruled that the remaining 41 lawmakers who had not submitted the affiliation certificates at the time of nomination paper submission could do so now within a period of 15 days. The government later filed review petitions against the ruling, and now a CB is hearing the case. In its reply, the ECP said the majority of judges who endorsed the July 12 order did not take note of the clarifications issued on September 14 and October 18. “Before these clarifications, the case was never presented before the full 13-member bench. The majority decision violated Article 10-A and Article 4 of the Constitution.” The ECP stated that the majority judgment incorrectly mentioned that the PTI was present before the court. It contended that PTI never requested the reserved seats, nor did it seek them on any forum. It said through the July 12 decision, the SIC was substituted in place of PTI. It said the list for reserved seats is submitted before polling in accordance with the election schedule. However, the PTI was ordered to submit the list for reserved seats after the elections, which is contrary to the law. Additionally, it said 39 members were declared as PTI members contrary to the legal procedure. Relief under Article 187 was granted beyond the scope of the court's jurisdiction, and the ECP was not heard when Section 94 of the Election Act was invalidated. Meanwhile, the PPP has also submitted additional statements to the Supreme Court, claiming that the court’s July 12 decision went beyond the petition and the relief sought. The real issue was simply whether the SIC was entitled to reserved seats. The matter of awarding reserved seats to PTI was never under consideration. This same question — whether SIC was entitled to reserved seats — was posed before the ECP, the Peshawar High Court, and the SC, it said. The party contended that the SC issued a decision on reserved seats that was unrelated to the actual petitions before it. The court exceeded its jurisdiction and granted relief that had never been requested. The PTI and the SIC are two distinct political parties, it added.

PIA resumes Dubai-Skardu direct flights from May 30
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to resume direct flights between Dubai and Skardu from Friday (today) offering travellers convenient access to one of Pakistan’s most picturesque and remote northern destinations, APP reported. The seasonal flight service was formally announced during a ceremony held at PIA’s Dubai office, attended by airline's Regional Manager Sarmad Aizas, and Pakistan’s Consul General in Dubai, Hussain Muhammad. The event, which included a cake-cutting ceremony, was also attended by members of a foreign tourist group booked on the inaugural flight. Speaking on the occasion, the consul general said, “This flight not only facilitates Pakistani expatriates but also opens the doors for more than 200 nationalities living in the UAE to discover the untouched beauty of Skardu and Gilgit-Baltistan.” Skardu, located around 570 kilometres north of Islamabad, is known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, including some of the world’s highest peaks such as K2, as well as cold deserts and scenic valleys. The direct flight service reduces travel time from over 20 hours by road via the Karakoram Highway to under three hours by air. The region attracts visitors year-round. The summer season in Gilgit-Baltistan offers a respite from the Gulf heat, with temperatures typically remaining below 20°C. In winter, the region is transformed by snow, attracting tourists for its unique cold desert safari experience against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. PIA officials expressed hope that the route would further promote tourism in the country’s northern areas and provide greater travel convenience for overseas Pakistanis and international tourists alike.

CII declares underage marriage bill ‘un-Islamic’
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) on Tuesday rejected a bill banning marriage under the age of 18, calling it “un-Islamic” and incompatible with Sharia law. The bill, recently passed by the National Assembly and endorsed by the Senate, aimed to outlaw child marriages in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), criminalising unions involving anyone under 18. The CII said the legislation’s provision to define underage marriage as rape and impose punishments contradicted Islamic teachings. In its latest meeting, the council criticised the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government’s proposed “Child Marriage Prohibition Bill 2025,” arguing it was contrary to Sharia, expressing concern that the legislation had not been sent to the CII for review prior to its presentation in parliament. Read more: NA passes bill criminalising child marriage It concluded with a formal statement rejecting the federal bill, originally tabled by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sharmila Farooqui. Additionally, the council expressed that while thalassemia testing before marriage could be encouraged, it should not be made mandatory. It emphasised the importance of keeping marriage procedures free from unnecessary complexities, in accordance with Islamic principles. The council was referring to the Sindh Prevention and Control of Thalassemia Act 2013, which makes it mandatory for couples to undergo thalassemia testing before marriage. It also condemned societal pressure on families—particularly brides—to provide dowries, calling the practice un-Islamic. Read more: Fazlur Rehman warns of protests over underage marriage ban bill The council said women should be allowed to retain either their husband’s or parents’ domicile after marriage. It reiterated that, under Islamic law, a husband is not financially liable for his divorced wife following the completion of her Iddat (waiting period). The CII also announced the formation of a committee to review and propose amendments to Section 7 of the “Muslim Family Laws Amendment Bill 2025,” following a request from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Separately, the council reviewed inquiries from the National Accountability Bureau on issues related to investments, housing schemes, and Islamic profit-sharing arrangements such as Mudarabah.

Iranian judge stabbed to death in suspected terrorist attack
An Iranian judge has been killed in what authorities are calling a terrorist attack in the southern city of Shiraz, state media reported on Tuesday. The victim, Ehsan Bagheri, 38, was attacked by two unidentified assailants wielding a "cold weapon" — typically referring to a knife or blunt instrument — while on his way to work in the morning, according to the IRNA news agency. Officials did not disclose the exact type of weapon used. Bagheri was serving as the head of Branch 102 of Shiraz's Criminal Court 2, the report said. Seyed Sadrollah Rajaee-Nasab, the head of the provincial justice department, confirmed the killing and said an investigation is underway. Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, has ordered a nationwide manhunt to track down those responsible. The attack follows a separate incident in January in which two prominent judges, Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh, were fatally shot in their offices in Tehran — an act that also shocked the judicial community and raised concerns about targeted violence against legal officials. Authorities have not yet linked the incidents, but both have sparked calls for enhanced security measures for judicial figures across the country.

Polio campaign launched to immunise over 10m children
The Sindh government's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has launched a province-wide anti-polio campaign, which will continue until June one. According to the EOC Sindh spokesperson, the campaign aims to vaccinate over 10.6 million children under the age of five across 30 districts of the province. More than 80,000 trained polio workers will go door to door to administer the drops, supported by 25,539 security personnel. In addition to polio drops, children aged six to 59 months will also receive Vitamin A supplements to help boost their immunity. Following successful rounds in February and April, this phase is considered crucial in strengthening nationwide efforts to eradicate the poliovirus. Although significant progress has been made, environmental samples from districts like Karachi, Hyderabad, and Larkana still show traces of the virus. So far, four polio cases have been reported in Sindh this year. The spokesperson emphasised that as long as the poliovirus exists anywhere in the world, it remains a threat to our children. This campaign reflects our collective commitment to reaching every child and eliminating polio for good. The campaign is currently underway in 1,292 union councils across Sindh, where district administrations, the health department, and partner organisations are actively supporting polio teams. EOC Sindh urges parents, teachers, religious scholars, media, and community leaders to play a proactive role in this national cause. If a child has missed their polio drops, citizens are encouraged to call the helpline at 1166 or send a WhatsApp message to 0346-7776546.

Imran Khan directs PTI to prepare for nationwide movement
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has instructed the party to prepare for a major countrywide movement against the incumbent government. "Start preparing for a mass movement; I will not call people to Islamabad, but we will launch the movement across Pakistan," Imran conveyed through his sister, Aleema Khan, who spoke to the media on Monday. Speaking to the press outside the jail, she stated that her brother vowed to resist all forms of oppression and torture, declaring that he would never bow down to subjugation. "Imran Khan has made it clear that even if he spends his entire life behind bars, he will not surrender to pressure," she added. She highlighted key points shared by her brother, stating that despite being a former prime minister, Imran is being denied basic rights given to ordinary prisoners. "In the past eight months, he has only been allowed one brief conversation with his children and has not been permitted to meet his sisters," Aleema explained. She said that efforts to send him books have also been blocked by jail authorities, adding, "Even his personal doctors have been denied access to him." Imran, through his sister, reaffirmed his stance, "No matter the extent of the torture, I will never accept subjugation. I will not give in." Aleema also mentioned that her brother believes his wife, Bushra Bibi, was placed in jail as part of a broader effort to apply pressure on him. Despite this, Imran remains steadfast in his commitment to not compromise. "Even if I am kept in prison for life, I will not bow down," Imran was quoted as saying. Moreover, Aleema dismissed the rumours circulating about negotiations for Imran's release. "Some YouTubers have speculated that a deal is in the works, with foreign involvement. But these narratives are being created to calm the public," she said. On party matters, she said that PTI is driven by ideology, not political opportunism. "Our party is based on a strong ideological foundation, not on electables," he was quoted as saying. "Those who don't align with our principles have no place in PTI." Aleema further revealed that Imran criticised the judicial delays in his cases, particularly his corruption case, which has been pending for over three months. "The judges promised to take action, but nothing has been done," she said. She also shared that PTI members of Parliament will show their support for the judiciary, with lawmakers from Punjab heading to the Lahore High Court, and MNAs from Islamabad and Peshawar visiting the Islamabad High Court to express their backing.

Mother, children of Pakistani origin killed in London house fire
A Pakistani mother and her three children died in a house fire in north-west London early on Saturday morning. A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, police said. The fire broke out at around 01:20 BST at two adjoining terraced houses on Tillett Close in the Stonebridge area of Brent. Emergency services arrived to find both properties severely damaged. The victims have been identified as a 43-year-old woman and her three children – a 15-year-old girl, and two boys aged eight and four. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that the woman was the mother of the three children. According to the BBC, two other members of the same family - a woman in her 70s and a teenage girl — were also in the house and were taken to the hospital. Their conditions have not been made public. The Metropolitan Police said a 41-year-old man was arrested outside the property on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody. The family were of Pakistani origin and had lived in the UK for over 20 years, neighbours told the BBC. Eight fire engines and around 70 firefighters from stations across Wembley, Park Royal, and Willesden responded to the blaze. They fought the fire for several hours before it was brought under control. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Fire investigators and homicide detectives are working jointly on the case. Neighbour Mohamed Labidi, 38, a teacher who lives on the same street, told the PA news agency he was devastated by the loss. "I could not even look at the house," he said. "They were good people. We used to socialise together. The children were always polite. It's heartbreaking." Another resident told the BBC she heard screaming and breaking glass and came outside to see the property next door on fire.

Objection to plea for Imran's parole stays
The Islamabad High Court on Friday issued its written order on a petition filed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur for release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on parole, saying that the objections raised by the Registrar Office were still unaddressed. CM Gandapur had moved the application for the release of Imran, who had been convicted in the £190 million case, could be targeted by Indian drones while in Adiala jail. The petition was heard by the IHC Acting Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar. The Registrar Office raised the objections that application was not filed by the convict himself and asked how could such a relief be sought for another person. Second, the office said that the person for whom the relief was sought had not been made party to the case. Imran was convicted in the reference moved by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The Registrar Office also said that in the petition, Nab had also not been made a party to the case, in the application for the parole release of a convicted person.

Only 25,698 to perform Hajj under private quota this year
Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Muhammad Yousaf announced on Friday that about 25,698 pilgrims will be able to perform Hajj this year under the private scheme. This sharp reduction follows thousands of revoked slots due to private operators’ failure to comply with Saudi Arabia’s booking rules and deadlines. Saudi Arabia had allocated Pakistan a total Hajj quota of 179,210 pilgrims for 2025. Traditionally, this quota is split evenly between the government and private sectors. However, the private sector’s share dropped drastically from 89,801 to just over 25,000 after failing to meet procedural requirements set by Saudi authorities, leaving more than 67,000 prospective pilgrims affected. Yousaf said during a press conference that by February 14, only 3,600 pilgrims had submitted payments, but after a one-week extension, the number rose to 13,000. Read more: Funds for 67,000 Pakistani Hajj pilgrims sent to wrong account He also noted that while 904 private Hajj operators were registered with Saudi authorities based on the ministry’s list, many pilgrims made payments to unregistered operators, ignoring official guidelines. A committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will investigate the issue, Yousaf added. He confirmed that Pakistani pilgrims would be transported by Pakistan International Airlines, Saudi Airlines, Air Sial, Airblue, and Serene Air. Earlier this month, the ministry urged pilgrims to verify the authenticity of private tour operators before making payments and to rely only on the ministry’s official channels to avoid fraud. Some registered private operators also failed to meet Saudi deadlines for payment, prompting Premier Sharif to secure an extension, which was granted. The Hajj pilgrimage is expected to take place between June 4 and June 9. Nearly 89,000 Pakistanis are set to travel under the government scheme, with Pakistan’s Hajj flight operation having started on April 29. So far, 55,642 pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia via 244 flights.

IHC seeks details of precedents in court martial cases
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday sought previous judicial precedents, where details of the court martial proceedings were provided to the court. IHC Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro heard the plea for the production of the details of the charge sheet against former Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officer Air Marshal (retd) Jawad Saeed, who had been given 14-year jail term by a military court for leaking sensitive information. The petitioner's lawyer Abdul Waheed Advocate, besides the additional attorney general and the PAF legal officials appeared in the court on Thursday. During the hearing, the PAF officials did not present the record of the court martial proceedings and the charge sheet against Jawad Saeed. The PAF officials told the court that according to the PAF Act, the record of the sentence given and the record of the charge sheet could not be provided. The petitioner's lawyer said that this had never happened before under their own law. However, the PAF officials denied that claim. The petitioner's lawyer pleaded to the court that injustice had been committee in the case against Jawad Saeed, adding that neither he was given the lawyer of his choice, nor the record. He said that Jawad Saeed's family was also not informed. Justice Soomro told the petitioner's lawyer to present court precedents at the next hearing in which the record had been provided in such a case. The lawyer replied that he would present the Supreme Court's decisions and court precedents, adding that full bench judgments were available in similar cases. Justice Soomro asked the lawyer to present the court precedents in the form of para-wise comments and adjourned further hearing of the matter until June 17.

Pakistan nuclear security regime foolproof: FO
Pakistan remained fully confident in the strength of its comprehensive nuclear security regime and the robustness of its command and control structures, the Foreign Office spokesperson said on Thursday. In response to a media query regarding remarks made by former US National Security Advissr John Bolton to an Indian media outlet, concerning Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement on Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, the spokesperson in a statement said, “It is ironic that John Bolton’s remarks were prompted by a statement from Rajnath Singh—a leader affiliated with a Hindu extremist organization, known for repeatedly issuing threats of aggression against Pakistan.” In reality, he said the international community should be more concerned about India’s nuclear arsenal being controlled by individuals like Rajnath Singh, who harbor well-documented hostility toward Pakistan and Muslims, and exhibit dangerous delusions of grandeur. Read more: Modi says Pakistan will not get water from Indian-controlled rivers “The escalating radicalisation of India’s political landscape, media, and segments of its society raises legitimate nuclear security concerns. These concerns are further exacerbated by the persistence of a nuclear black market in India, highlighting serious deficiencies in its nuclear security framework — as evidenced by recurring incidents of theft and illicit trafficking of sensitive nuclear materials,” he added. Last week, the Foreign Office had urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to investigate the ‘nuclear black market’ in India and repeated incidents of theft and illicit trafficking of radioactive material, as it rejected a call by India’s defence minister for the nuclear watchdog to monitor Islamabad’s nuclear programme. Pointing to multiple incidents of radioactive material theft in India and other security lapses, the Foreign Office had said, “Pakistan urges a thorough investigation of these incidents and calls upon India to ensure the safety and security of its nuclear facilities and arsenal.” “If anything, the IAEA and the international community should be worried about the repeated theft and illicit trafficking incidents involving nuclear and radioactive material in India.” Read more: Islamabad will provide evidence BLA, TTP are Indian-backed proxies: Khawaja Asif The Foreign Office was responding to comments made by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during a speech to Indian soldiers in Srinagar, in which he said, “I believe that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons should be taken under the supervision of the IAEA.” Singh’s remarks came days after the two nuclear-armed neighbours paused their worst military confrontation in nearly three decades following the Pahalgam attack, a militant assault that New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based groups. Tensions spiked as cross-border exchanges escalated, prompting global concern over a potential nuclear flashpoint.

Asked why India sought truce? Military sources reply: ‘We don’t humiliate enemy’
“We’ve achieved a historic victory against the enemy with the help of Allah Almighty. We’ve given the adversary such a response that it no longer dares to take direct action against Pakistan,” responsible sources within the military leadership said on Thursday. “Though the enemy is still targeting our children through its proxies, even now they are being hit with missiles. They will not be spared under any circumstances,” the sources said while speaking with senior journalists at the Presidency on the sidelines of a ceremony where army chief General Asim Munir was formally handed the 'Field Marshal Baton'. “In the Battle of Badr, there were 313 fighters under the leadership of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Allah had commanded that even if the number is small, it doesn’t matter — gather a handful of dust or sand and throw it toward the enemy; it would strike them like missiles, because it was Allah who caused the impact,” the sources added. “In the same way, in the recent war with India, there was divine support for Pakistan, which led to success. Alhamdulillah, we carried out such an action that the enemy had no answer,” the sources said. The military leadership sources also hailed the “exceptional harmony between our civil, political, and military leadership, the likes of which is rarely seen. We are proud of this unity.” With regard to the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, the sources revealed that India did not speak to Pakistan directly; instead, indirect contact was made through intermediaries. When the military leadership sources were asked about those targeting innocent children in Balochistan, they said, “Even now, missiles are being fired at those responsible. Anyone who comes toward us will not be spared.” When asked why the operation was named Bunyanum Marsoos, it was explained that in briefings to the field marshal, air chief, and other officials, it was said that Pakistani soldiers and fighter jets had stood like a formidable wall against the enemy. Therefore, the operation was named Bunyanum Marsoos, meaning “a wall of molten lead.” Asked what exactly forced the enemy into agreeing to a ceasefire, the military leadership sources replied: “We do not insult the enemy.”

Rs146m allocated for Balochistan officers
Amid ongoing law and order situation in Balochistan, the government has expedited the work on implementing "incentive package and policy" for the officers posted in the province and devised a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the allocation of funds. In a recent meeting, the Finance Division briefed the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) that the prime minister had approved the revised Incentive Package for PAS and PSP officers posted under the Government of Balochistan (GoB) on January 9, last year. Accordingly, the Establishment Division on January 29, 2024 notified the package, which aimed at motivating the PAS and PSP officers from outside Balochistan to be posted in Balochistan by addressing concerns like high cost of living, lack of facilities, support and social isolation. An SOP had been devised in consultation with the Establishment Division to allocate funds for the under the package, the ECC was informed. As per the SOP the Establishment Division would coordinate with the Balochistan government on a bi-annual basis. The SOP stipulated that funds would be surrendered to the consolidated account of the Balochistan government in favour of the Finance Division. The Finance Division would release the funds after obtaining the Technical Supplementary Grant (TSG) from the ECC. Accordingly, the Finance Division surrendered Rs146,413,696 for onward transfer to the Balochistan government in order to meet the demand under the Finance Division's allocation for FY 2024-25. PM, Field Marshal vow to end India-backed terrorism after Khuzdar attack
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir stated that it is time for the nation to display a strong resolve—similar to that shown recently against aggression by India—to bring the fight against foreign-sponsored terrorism to a logical and decisive end. PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir paid an emergency visit to Quetta to meet the injured children and other victims of the attack that targeted a school bus in Khuzdar, which left at least five people, including three schoolchildren, martyred. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif {@CMShehbaz} visited Quetta to meet the injured children and other victims of horrific attack on a school bus in Khuzdar. pic.twitter.com/RKXJJFvmK5 — Government of Pakistan (@GovtofPakistan) May 21, 2025 According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti and Quetta Corps Commander briefed the PM and Field Marshal on the heinous incident. The PM expressed that the entire nation stands resolute behind its Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies in the collective will to eradicate the scourge of terrorism and safeguard the sovereignty and security of Pakistan. He emphasised that India’s reliance on such morally indefensible tactics, particularly the deliberate targeting of children, demands urgent attention from the international community. The use of terrorism as a tool of foreign policy must be unequivocally condemned and confronted. Premier Sharif said that Pakistan’s security forces and law enforcement agencies will relentlessly pursue all those involved in this barbaric act. “The architects, abettors, and enablers of this crime will be held accountable and brought to justice, and the truth about India’s cunning role—as the real perpetrator of terrorism, while feigning victimhood—stands exposed before the world,” he added. In a reprehensible and cowardly act of terrorism, a school bus carrying innocent children was targeted today in Khuzdar, Balochistan by India’s state-sponsored proxies (Fitna Al Hindustan) increasingly seen as the epicenter of regional instability. Prime Minister Muhammad… pic.twitter.com/UOiRKH0HUo — Government of Pakistan (@GovtofPakistan) May 21, 2025 The PM, federal ministers, and Field Marshal expressed deep grief over the loss of innocent lives and the injuries sustained by the school-going children. Upon seeing the badly wounded and critically injured children, they condemned the attack as a shameful and despicable act of terrorism carried out by Indian-sponsored proxies. “In a reprehensible and cowardly act of terrorism, a school bus carrying innocent children was targeted today in Khuzdar, Balochistan by state-sponsored proxies (Fitna Al Hindustan) of India, which the world has largely come to know as the epicentre of instability in the region,” the statement read. Read More: Three children among five martyred in Khuzdar school bus attack “Following the gross failure to intimidate Pakistan through overt military means, dastardly terrorist incidents are being orchestrated through these proxies at an intensified scale in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, deliberately targeting civilians in a futile attempt to destabilise Pakistan,” it added. It further stated that these terrorist groups—masquerading under ethnic pretenses—are not only exploited by India as instruments of state policy, but also stand as a stain on the honour and values of the Baloch and Pashtun people, who have long rejected violence and extremism. Khuzdar School Bus Attack The suspected bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the school bus as it drove past Zero Point near Rakhshan Hotel, Deputy Commissioner Yasir Iqbal Dashti said, adding that the bus was ferrying students to the Army Public School situated within the Khuzdar cantonment. The vehicle was rigged with more than 30 kilograms of explosives, according to the Bomb Disposal Squad. The military’s media wing stated that “three innocent children and two adults have embraced Shahadat” and multiple children have sustained injuries in the “cowardly and ghastly attack planned and orchestrated by the terrorist state of India and executed by its proxies in Balochistan. The ISPR added that India has unleashed its proxies to spread terror and unrest in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa through such heinous and cowardly acts after miserably failing on the battlefield. Soon after the deadly attack, security forces threw a cordon around the area and launched an investigation. Security was tightened in and around Khuzdar following the bombing, with checkpoints established and patrols intensified to prevent further attacks. ISPR unmasks India's state-sponsored terror Last month, Lt-Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) provided evidence of India's state-sponsored cross-border terrorism in Pakistan, particularly Balochistan, announcing the arrest of an Indian-trained Pakistani citizen, and recovery of an Indian drone and improvised explosive device (IED) from him. Addressing a press conference to inform the public about the current security situation in the country and address India's baseless allegation, the DG ISPR said that India was actively involved in spreading terrorism within Pakistan, operating and supporting terrorist networks on Pakistani soil. Lt-Gen Chaudhry said that India had been found operating terror networks inside Pakistan, in which explosives, IEDs, and other lethal materials were being supplied to terrorists to target not only the security forces but also innocent civilians. Read More: ISPR unmasks India's state-sponsored terror The DG ISPR said that on April 25, an arrest was made near the Jhelum bus stand. "A man named Abdul Majeed, who was reportedly trained in India, was taken into custody. Authorities recovered an IED, two mobile phones, and Rs70,000 cash from him," he added. Further investigation led to the recovery of an Indian drone from his house, and Rs1 million in cash. "The handler was a junior commissioned officer of the Indian Army, Subedar Sukvinder," he said, adding: "The Indian officer had sent the IED and instructed the terrorist to collect it from a designated location." "A forensic analysis of the recovered materials provided irrefutable evidence that could be examined by any credible, independent agency," he said. "This irrefutable evidence is just one small component of the broader pattern of state-sponsored terrorism being orchestrated by India," the DG said.

Interim bails of Imran, Bushra extended
An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday extended the interim bails of Bushra Bibi, wife of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, until June 12 in connection with 29 FIRs registered over the PTI's November 26 protest. ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah presided over the proceedings. Her counsels, Advocates Muhammad Faisal Malik and Hasnain Sanbal, appeared before the court and requested that Bushra Bibi be included in the investigation in the presence of her husband and legal representatives. Prosecutor Syed Zaheer Shah submitted case records before the court, while the investigating officers in these cases were also present. The court extended Bushra Bibi's interim bail until June 12 and adjourned further proceedings until the next hearing, instructing the counsels of both parties to present their arguments on the following date. Meanwhile, in Islamabad, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka extended the interim bails of the PTI founder in six cases and Bushra Bibi in one case. The court also directed that Imran must be produced either in person or via video link at the next hearing. During the hearing on pre-arrest bail pleas, Advocate Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry appeared before the court. However, arguments on Imran's behalf could not be presented as lead counsel Salman Safdar was engaged in the Supreme Court. Advocate Chaudhry requested a new date for arguments, noting that despite court orders, the incarcerated leader had not been produced. The court extended the interim bails of the accused until June 17 and ordered that Imran be presented either in person or via video link on the next hearing date.

Pakistan rubbishes Indian claim of attack on Golden Temple
Pakistan has rejected as "baseless" claims by a senior Indian Army officer that Islamabad had attempted to target the Golden Temple, with drones and missiles in Amritsar city of India's Punjab state, earlier this month. A spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Office, responding to remarks made by a senior Indian Army officer, said on Tuesday, “We categorically reject the allegations that Pakistan attempted to target the Golden Temple, the most revered place in the Sikh faith.” Statement by the Spokesperson in Response to Media Queries Regarding the Remarks Made by a Senior Indian Army Officer. pic.twitter.com/w3LvAfIhic — Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Pakistan (@ForeignOfficePk) May 20, 2025 “We hold all places of worship in the highest esteem and cannot think of targeting a holy site like the Golden Temple,” the spokesperson added. The spokesperson further said India had attacked multiple religious sites in Pakistan on the night of May 6 and 7. Pakistan also highlighted its role in facilitating Sikh religious pilgrimage, pointing to its visa-free access initiative for international pilgrims visiting the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur. “Pakistan is the proud custodian of many holy sites of the Sikh faith,” the statement read. “Every year, it welcomes thousands of Sikh pilgrims from across the world. Pakistan also provides visa-free access to the Gurdwara Sahib Kartarpur through the Kartarpur Corridor.” “In that backdrop, any claim concerning Pakistan’s attempt to target the Golden Temple is absolutely baseless and incorrect,” the spokesperson reiterated. India-Pakistan standoff The latest escalation between Pakistan and India began on April 22, when an attack in the IIOJK resort town of Pahalgam killed 26 people. India immediately blamed Pakistan for the incident, despite providing no public evidence. In response, India undertook a series of hostile actions the next day on April 23, including suspending the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), cancelling visas for Pakistani citizens, closing the Wagah-Attari border crossing, ordering the shutdown of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, and reducing diplomatic staff at each other's embassies. Pakistan strongly rejected the accusation, calling it unsubstantiated, but took reciprocal measures through its National Security Committee (NSC). These included halting trade with India, closing Pakistani airspace to Indian aircraft, and other countersteps. Tensions further escalated in the early hours of May 7, when missile strikes hit six cities in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), destroying a mosque and killing dozens of civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. In a swift military response, Pakistan’s armed forces shot down Indian warplanes, including three Rafale jets, widely regarded as a key asset of the Indian Air Force. Over the following two days, India launched waves of Israeli-made drones, which were also neutralised by Pakistan's military. The confrontation intensified again in the early hours of May 10, when India targeted several Pakistani airbases with missile strikes. In retaliation, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, damaging Indian military installations, including missile storage sites, airbases, and other strategic targets. By Saturday evening, US President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire had been reached following intense diplomatic efforts overnight. Minutes later, the agreement was confirmed separately by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the Indian foreign secretary. But despite the military ceasefire the war of narratives has waged on. While Pakistan publicly credited US President Donald Trump — along with China and Gulf states — for playing a vital role in defusing tensions, India downplayed foreign involvement. Indian officials have insisted the truce was the result of direct bilateral talks. Trump, has however, reiterated his stance twice following the initial announcement.

Fazlur Rehman warns of protests over underage marriage ban bill
JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman condemned the proposed bill seeking to ban underage marriages, warning that failure to withdraw it could force his party to take to the streets, Express News reported. Speaking in the National Assembly on Monday, Rehman criticised the timing of the bill, arguing that the country needs unity and solidarity, not controversy. “This is a time to promote national cohesion, yet the government is pushing forward a divisive bill,” he said. Referring to the bill that prohibits marriage for individuals under the age of 18, he questioned the necessity of introducing such legislation at this critical moment. “If I oppose the bill, people will question my stance, but I must raise my voice,” he stated. He urged the Speaker of the National Assembly to issue a ruling against the bill and cautioned the government not to compel his party to protest on the streets. “It would be better to halt this legislation and refer it to the Council of Islamic Ideology. If they find no objection, I too will have none,” he added. Also Read: Pakistan denies Indian claim of using Shaheen missile in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos Addressing recent regional tensions, Rehman said the entire country and Parliament are united in condemning India's aggression. He denounced India’s swift blame on Pakistan following the Pehalgam incident in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir without conducting any investigation. “India launched missiles targeting our civilian and religious sites, claiming they were attacking terrorist hideouts. They blamed us for their own security failures,” he said. He praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their prompt and effective response, stating, “If our military establishment admits it cannot fight without national support, we must ensure unity. India initiated aggression, but our military’s response will be remembered in history.” The JUI-F chief also paid tribute to Pakistan’s forces, highlighting the need to maintain unity even after a ceasefire. “India’s Parliament is mocking its own leadership. Modi stands isolated, without public support. To save face, he may resort to such tactics again,” he warned. He further stressed the importance of keeping the Afghan border peaceful. He referred to the drone strike in Waziristan, which was also discussed in Parliament, and mentioned his party’s million marches in Peshawar and Quetta. “We organised rallies to break the climate of fear and demonstrate national unity. We showed the world that the people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are very much alive,” he concluded.

Pakistan remains committed to ceasefire agreement, PM tells Iranian President
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a telephonic conversation on Saturday, during which the former reiterated Pakistan's commitment to upholding the ceasefire agreement with India, while also affirming the country’s unwavering resolve to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs. Pakistan and India were on the brink of full-scale war following the recent escalation triggered by the Pahalgam incident. With tensions running high, Iran offered to mediate, while several world powers also stepped in to help defuse the crisis. According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep appreciation for Iran’s diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in South Asia. During the conversation, the Prime Minister extended his well-wishes for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and thanked Tehran for its sincere and brotherly role in promoting peace in the region. Read more: UK, US pushing to maintain Pakistan-India ceasefire, David Lammy says Commending Iran’s diplomatic efforts, PM Shehbaz specifically highlighted the Iranian President's call last month and the deployment of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to the region during the crisis with India, recognizing both as significant gestures of solidarity and support. Condemning India’s unprovoked attacks that resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians including women and children, the Prime Minister emphasized that Pakistan’s courageous armed forces gave a responsible and befitting response to the aggression. He reiterated that Pakistan remains a strong advocate for peace and, in that spirit, agreed to a ceasefire understanding with India—an agreement the country remains committed to upholding. Reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs, the Prime Minister also raised concerns over India’s alleged unilateral attempts to violate the Indus Waters Treaty. He termed these actions illegal and described them as a "red line" for Pakistan, given that the water resources in question are a lifeline for its 240 million people. The Prime Minister further reiterated that the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains the root cause of instability in South Asia. He called for a just resolution of the issue in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, identifying it as the key to lasting peace in the region. Iranian President Pezeshkian offered condolences over the loss of civilian lives during the recent hostilities and praised Pakistan’s efforts for peace, welcoming the ceasefire agreement as a positive step forward. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to regional peace and stability. Read more: PM assigns Bilawal to lead peace delegation highlighting Indian aggression abroad The two leaders also reviewed bilateral relations and agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly in trade, regional connectivity, security, and people-to-people exchanges. In a gesture reflecting growing ties, President Pezeshkian invited the Prime Minister to undertake an official visit to Tehran, an invitation that was warmly accepted. Earlier, Lt General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), lauded Iran’s peace efforts during the recent Pakistan-India conflict and warned of "forces" seeking to create rifts between brotherly countries. "Pakistan is deeply grateful to the international community, and we are especially appreciative of brotherly countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran," Gen Chaudhry told IRNA in an interview published today—the first by any Pakistani armed forces spokesperson to an Iranian outlet. “We must be aware that there are forces in the region, with the help of external actors, attempting to create misunderstandings and confusion among brotherly countries, aiming to sow discord between friends and allies,” the DG ISPR added.

Aleema Khan and Kanwal Shauzab engage in tense courtroom exchange over leaked video
A tense courtroom encounter unfolded Saturday between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, and former party MNA Kanwal Shauzab, following the circulation of a video in which Shauzab appeared to criticize Aleema. In the video, Shauzab allegedly criticized Aleema for disrespecting party officials and interim chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, claiming she was working to destroy the party and intended to confront her directly over the issue. During a hearing at the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi, both women briefly exchanged words. Shauzab approached Aleema, saying, "Aleema Apa, I want to talk to you." Aleema responded, “Just leave it, it’s fine. Many people speak against us. We are now used to such accusations." Shauzab attempted to clarify, saying, “A specific portion of an old video was selectively edited and used against me,” but Aleema walked away, seemingly ignoring her attempt at reconciliation. Meanwhile, the ATC rejected Aleema Khan’s petition seeking exemption from court appearances and permission to travel abroad for fundraising events. Aleema’s legal team argued she had been invited as a chief guest to events for Namal University and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in the UK, but prosecutor Zaheer Shah opposed the request, stating she had no active role in the fundraising activities. Read more: PHC grants protective bail to Imran's sister The court later issued a written verdict, denying the petition and rejecting her plea to travel abroad. Speaking to the media after the hearing, Aleema expressed frustration over being denied permission to travel. "I’ve been going around courts for the past week seeking travel permission. Why are you afraid of me?" she questioned. She also criticized the comparisons being made between her case and high-profile scandals involving figures like Ayyan Ali and Khawaja Asif, stating, “Even those involved in major scandals were granted bail. The only accusation against me is that I conveyed a message from Imran Khan to party workers — and for that, I’m facing legal action." Addressing the issue of political dynasties, Aleema said, "Yes, we are hereditary, and we are standing with our brother. No one can stop us." She reiterated that the family is united behind Imran Khan and determined to secure his release. “The founder of PTI is not alone — his family is with him. This is our duty and we will fulfill it,” she added. "We are standing by him in this battle — in this struggle."

Kaira urges political reconciliation, calls for ‘forgive and forget’ policy
Amid a celebratory national mood following Pakistan’s military success against India at the borders, senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira, without naming PTI, said it was high time to bridge the political divide. He advised Khan’s party to make amends and called on the government to adopt a policy of forgiveness. At the same press conference, PPP Central Punjab General Secretary Syed Hasan Murtaza, taking a swipe at Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari for crediting Nawaz Sharif with war planning, said that “at least one should lie within some limits”. He said repeated lies, if not publicly exposed, begin to sound like the truth. Murtaza asserted that the real credit for making Pakistan’s defence invincible belonged to the PPP leadership. “If there’s any one party that had a role in strengthening Pakistan’s defence — from signing the MoU for the JF-17 to building heavy industries, from weapons to tanks, planes to missiles — it’s the PPP,” he said. He credited both the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and the late Benazir Bhutto, claiming that Bhutto launched Pakistan’s atomic programme, a decision that ultimately cost him his life. “Anyone can blow up a bomb and take credit for it.” Murtaza asserted that other parties could at best take credit for merely continuing the defence programmes initiated by PPP governments. "Others should try to lay claims to their achievement by posting photos," he added. He also took a jibe at Rana Sanaullah for "falsely claiming that the war was over on May 7”. He said that if the prime minister claims credit for downing six planes, then he should also take responsibility for the seventh — the "Adiala aircraft," which he described as a creation of India’s Modi and Israel’s Netanyahu. Earlier, while commenting on the Indo-Pak conflict, Qamar Zaman Kaira, a member of the PPP central executive committee, said that despite India’s jingoism, it would eventually have to come to the negotiating table. He stressed that lasting peace in the region is not possible without resolving the Kashmir issue. “India should implement its plebiscite promise to the Kashmiri nation and leadership,” he said, adding that PPP wants the matter settled through negotiations. Addressing the media at the residence of PPP Central Punjab Deputy General Secretary Usman Malik — alongside Syed Hasan Murtaza, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed and Chaudhry Aslam Gul — Kaira said that the PPP united a broken country. He said: "Bhutto laid the foundation of a strong defence system and heavy chemical complex. JF-17 Thunder is being built in this HMC. Bibi Shaheed brought missile technology to Pakistan. Asif Zardari revived Pak-China friendship as president." He added that China now supports Pakistan both financially and defensively: "The work started by Bhutto Shaheed was completed by Asif Zardari, while Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, as foreign minister, fought for Pakistan’s cause like his grandfather and mother." The former federal minister stated that despite being a major victim of terrorism, "we want to cooperate in ending it." He said, "This is not a war of credit. Bhutto had created a broken country and a defeated nation. Instead of erasing someone's line, I should follow my own line." Kaira stressed that, to create a lasting sense of unity, "the country’s political parties, alluding to PTI, should do introspection and seek forgiveness, and the government and institutions should also adopt a policy of forgiveness”.

NA approves extension of CSS age limit, exam attempts from 2026
The National Assembly on Friday passed a resolution to increase the maximum age limit for candidates appearing in the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination from 30 to 35 years, with the new policy set to take effect from 2026, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. The move, introduced by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML‑N) MNA Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, was brought before the House after a successful motion to suspend procedural rules. The resolution was passed without opposition, reflecting broad parliamentary support. Alongside the age limit increase, the resolution also allows candidates a total of five attempts at the CSS exam. Lawmakers urged the government to implement these changes without delay to give prospective applicants sufficient time to prepare under the revised criteria. The CSS exam serves as a key gateway to Pakistan’s elite federal services, including positions in administration, foreign affairs, customs, and other civil sectors. It has traditionally attracted fresh university graduates and young professionals, with strict eligibility criteria in terms of age and number of attempts. By raising the age cap and allowing an additional attempt, the new measures aim to broaden access and provide greater flexibility for aspirants who may need more time to prepare or who enter the workforce later.

PM calls for national agri-innovation plan and regulatory overhaul
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed the relevant authorities to formulate a sustainable, long-term policy for agro-industrial development to promote agriculture and forestry—key sectors in mitigating the impact of climate change, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. While chairing a meeting on agricultural sector reforms, the prime minister emphasised that the government is focused on modernising agriculture to achieve self-sufficiency. He instructed officials to devise a coordinated strategy in consultation with the provinces and all relevant stakeholders. Highlighting the vast potential of Pakistan’s agricultural sector for rapid economic development, the prime minister noted that the country is endowed with fertile land, skilled agricultural experts, and hardworking farmers. Read more: Low cotton, maize output a setback He further directed that agricultural loans be provided to farmers on easy terms and stressed the importance of boosting agricultural research to enhance productivity. Additionally, he also instructed the concerned departments to present a National Agri-Innovation Plan aimed at driving innovation across the sector. The premier also called for the acceleration of ongoing reforms in the certification system for agricultural seeds and the formulation of a comprehensive action plan to promote the use of high-quality seeds. Underscoring the government's commitment to modernising agriculture, he ordered the development of a robust regulatory framework to support innovation and technology adoption in the sector. During the meeting, proposals were presented by the working group established for agricultural reforms. The meeting was attended by federal ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Musadik Malik, along with senior government officials. This development comes as Pakistan's agriculture sector is facing significant challenges. According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) and Topline Research, the sector’s growth rate dropped to 1.1% in the second quarter of FY 2024–25, down from 6.1% in the same quarter of FY 2023–24. The sharp decline has been largely attributed to a 31% fall in cotton production and a 15.4% drop in maize output, both of which are vital to the sector’s overall performance. Read more: CM unveils plan to boost agriculture sector Additionally, gram crop yields have seen a sharp downturn in the rain-fed Thal region, where prolonged drought and the effects of climate change have devastated hundreds of acres of farmland, pushing local farmers into financial distress. Earlier this month, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the provincial agriculture department to develop a four-year package for small growers to strengthen the province’s agricultural system and support vulnerable farmers.
