The Punjab government has decided to shift government offices, schools, colleges, universities and health units across Punjab to solar power under the Green Energy Programme through which Rs108 billion will be saved annually. A comprehensive plan has been formulated to increase the use of solar energy in the light of the directives issued by Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar. In the first phase of the programme, government offices and educational institutions in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and Sahiwal will be shifted to solar power while in the second phase, government offices and educational institutions in Rawalpindi, Taxila, Wah Cantt, Gujrat, Sialkot, Attock and Mianwali will go solar. Read more: Steel company to install solar power project Speaking on the province’s objective to shift to the renewable source of energy, Provincial Minister for Energy Dr Akhtar Malik has said that if Punjab is lit up, the whole country will shine brighter. He highlighted that billions of rupees are being saved through solar energy all over the world and alternative energy sources are being explored to meet the growing demand for electricity. “So far, 2,400 basic health units (BHU), 43 government universities, 1,100 schools have been shifted to solar energy which will help the government save Rs108 billion per year,” the minister added.
