PML-N put country on right track: Tarar

PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar said on Sunday that party supremo Nawaz Sharif always steered the country out of crisis. Addressing a workers' convention here on Sunday, he said the residents of the provincial capital admired Nawaz and supported the PML-N through thick and thin. He maintained that the PML-N Quaid started the journey of serving people in 1980. He questioned Bilawal’s contesting from Lahore's constituency NA-127 and asked what PPP had done in Karachi for the welfare of the people. Speaking on the occasion, PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique said, "February 8 is a day when there will be a competition between those who believe in country's development and who put the country's progress in the reverse gear." Read also: PML-N stands united as never before: Nawaz He said Nawaz and his brother Shehbaz Sharif believed in practical work instead of making hollow slogans. Saad said he recently visited Karachi, adding that the metropolis been badly neglected. "The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government remained in power in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for ten years but did nothing for the betterment of the people there," he claimed. PML-N Lahore General Secretary Khawaja Imran Nazir said PTI did nothing except weakening the country's economy and telling lies.

Nawaz to exit country before polls: Aitzaz

Veteran politician and esteemed lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan has made startling predictions regarding PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, suggesting that the former premier might once again exit the country before the upcoming elections and keep tabs on the results from abroad. Ahsan shared his insights during an interview with a private news channel on Friday. Pointing out that the PML-N supremo “is abroad anyways”, Ahsan speculated on the possibility of Nawaz’s absence during the crucial electoral period. He also commented on JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, implying a potential withdrawal from the electoral race. He described him as drumming the beats of retreat rather than victory, signalling a step back from active participation. “Two drums that are beaten — either of victory or retreat — Fazl seems to be beating the drum of a retreat”. Previously, he had labelled Nawaz as a "ladla" (blue-eyed) and accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the interim government of orchestrating efforts to secure a two-thirds majority for Nawaz Sharif in the upcoming general elections. Nawaz Sharif, who returned to Pakistan on October 21 after a four-year self-imposed exile, expressed disinterest in seeking retribution and emphasised embarking on a new path towards progress. Read also: Aitzaz slams 'persecution' of Imran in cypher case Commenting on the ongoing confrontations between the PTI and the ECP, Ahsan criticised the election watchdog's persistence in pursuing the matter further. He questioned the ECP's role, suggesting it should focus on conducting elections rather than engaging in disputes. Ahsan specifically highlighted the controversy surrounding PTI's bat symbol and criticised the ECP's bias against the party. “Is the ECP conducting elections or contesting them?” he asked. The lawyer was referring to the ECP's decision to challenge the Peshawar High Court's (PHC) ruling that reinstated PTI's election symbol. Ahsan underscored the commission's reluctance to comply with PHC's directives, including the publication of PTI's intra-party elections certificate on the ECP's official website and the restoration of the party's election symbol. He elaborated on the repercussions of contesting judgments, saying it would lead to a chain reaction of legal challenges. He rhetorically questioned the legitimacy of such actions, likening them to a hypothetical scenario where a district judge contests a high court's decision, prompting a subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court. “If the high court reverses the decision of the district court, should the district judge go to the Supreme Court to ask why the high court has given a decision against his decision?”

FIA told to quiz Pashteen in jail

Islamabad High Court’s Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb on Friday ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) leader Manzoor Pashteen in jail in connection with the details of the cases against him. During the hearing, lawyer Ataullah Kundi said Pashteen's co-accused had been granted bail and the FIA was waiting to arrest them again after their release. Justice Aurangzeb explained that the law was that when a person was already arrested, just proceed with the case. The judge elaborated that it could not be that if an accused was released in a case, the authorities should wait for him to come out and then arrest them again. He added that a person arrested in one case could be implicated in another one and the investigation could be completed in jail. Read ATC grants bail to Pashteen Justice Aurangzeb elaborated that the high court had given a decision regarding the arrest of a person in one case in another one. “If the court’s decision is not challenged, it becomes final,” he added. The lawyer said Pashteen had been arrested since December 7 and he had the right to bail. The judge remarked that he was not wrapping up the case. He warned the police to refrain from taking steps that if the government changed in the future and there was an inquiry, their careers would be ruined. The court told the FIA to carry out its investigation in jail or it would order the case to be closed. The hearing was later adjourned.

Govt may maintain oil prices for next fortnight

The prices of petroleum products are anticipated to undergo slight adjustments in the upcoming fortnight, influenced by a marginal rise in global Brent crude prices, as projected by the oil industry on Thursday. The government, following its bi-monthly schedule, is set to announce the new prices on December 31, effective from January 1, 2024, and applicable until January 15. According to industry estimates, petrol and kerosene oil prices are expected to decrease by Rs1 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) and light diesel oil (LDO) prices might increase by Rs2 per litre. These estimates from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are based on a scenario with zero adjustments in the exchange rate, current petroleum levy (PL) rates, and the general sales tax (GST) rates. The government currently imposes a PL of Rs60 per litre on petrol and HSD, with a zero rate on GST. Internationally, Brent prices have fluctuated between $77.95 and $81.07 per barrel since December 16, 2023. In the last review, the government applied an exchange rate of Rs284.28 to a US dollar. Read Gas woes paralyse industries Meanwhile, concerns over potential drone and missile attacks by the Houthis have led companies transporting crude oil to reroute some tankers away from the Red Sea. This strategic adjustment is expected to cause delays and additional costs for the journeys, exerting upward pressure on oil prices. Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reveals a 29% decline in refined products' imports to $499 million in November 2023 compared to $708 million in the previous year. In contrast, crude oil imports increased by 4% to $566 million from $546 million in the same month last year. The Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) notes a significant 16% decline in the sale of petroleum products in the first five months (July-November) of the fiscal year 2023, attributed to higher petroleum prices compared to the same period last year. In the meanwhile, companies that transport crude oil stopped sending some tankers through the Red Sea to avoid the threat of drone and missile attacks by the Houthis. Rerouting the vessels would cause delays and extra cost for the journeys, putting upward pressure on oil prices, experts said.

Fazl slams ‘judicial martial law’

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Thursday maintained that an environment of “judicial martial law” had been created in the country as he raised security concerns ahead of the next general elections. “When will the Election Commission of Pakistan [ECP] become independent if the polls schedule is issued on the court’s orders?” the JUI-F chief raised the question while addressing a news conference in Islamabad. Fazl pointed out that three judges of the Supreme Court had summoned Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja and directed him to file a plea for the polls. He added that the top court later opened at the time of Isha prayers and ordered the CEC to issue the election schedule, followed by the ECP implementing the directives. The JUI-F chief warned that he would hold Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and the CEC responsible even if one of his party activists was martyred in a terrorist attack while campaigning for the upcoming elections. Read  Maulana Fazlur Rehman to contest elections from NA-265 Pishin Fazl said his party had been notified by the district administration that the situation was dangerous and the JUI-F could not campaign for the elections. “If we contest the elections, at least the environment should be made conducive,” he continued. The JUI-F chief noted that if the security situation and weather were not favourable, it would affect the polls. “What will happen when the turnout will be affected because of the weather?” he raised the question Fazl said his party was accused of running away from the elections when it expressed its reservations over these factors. The JUI-F chief said the apex court should have heard the matter of election security first. “At least we are not satisfied [over the security situation],” he added

HRCP concerned over ‘rights violations’, militancy in K-P

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed concern about the alleged mismanagement of development resources for the newly merged districts (NMDs), the resurgence of militancy in the region and the delayed repatriation of internally displaced persons (IDPs). In its fact-finding report titled ‘The Merger and its Discontents’, the HRCP also expressed concerns over the curbs on fundamental freedoms, the incidence of enforced disappearances and the continued use of internment centres. Led by former HRCP chairperson Hina Jilani, the fact-finding mission team comprised regional vice-chair Akbar Khan, HRCP members Ijaz Khan and Jamila Gilani, and staff members Shahid Mehmood and Marrium Rauf. The report documents the mission's visit to Swat, Bannu, Khyber, Peshawar and an IDP camp in Baka Khel, and underscores the discontentment of NMDs' residents over the slow implementation of the merger plan. It stated that the residents also allege that the merger's promise of equality, equal protection under the law and equitable development remains unfulfilled. The continued presence of armed forces that hinders the establishment of law and order under police jurisdiction and a return to normalcy, as well as evidence of continued enforced disappearances and arbitrary detentions in internment centres, were also noted. Read also: HRCP general body meeting calls for economic justice Such practices, along with threats to the work of journalists and activists, undermine civil liberties, perpetuating fear and distrust among communities. It said that the military forces must cede space to the police where possible, empowering them with enough resources to tackle the increase in militancy. The Supreme Court must also urgently fix for hearing the appeal against the Peshawar High Court order that declared the Actions in Aid of Civil Power Ordinance 2019 case null and void, in order to remove the ambiguity surrounding the legality of internment centres and cases of enforced disappearances, the report recommended. "While certain positive steps for NMDs—including the establishment of district courts, local government elections, representation in the provincial assembly, and police capacity-building—are noted and welcomed, the report draws attention to limited access to courts and essential social services for residents that must be addressed," the report noted. The report also recommends increased access to utilities and social services for residents of IDP camps, and the release of all funds dedicated to development work in NMDs and the empowerment of local governments, with a thorough investigation of allegations of corruption and misuse in that regard.

PTI still seeks fair conduct despite ECP orders

Despite reiterated directives from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and explicit orders from the judiciary, it appears that the executive remains reluctant to ensure an equitable-playing field for candidates of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the forthcoming general elections scheduled for Feb 8. Persistent grievances continue regarding the heavy-handed conduct of law enforcement agencies, particularly the police force. The PTI candidates, who encountered challenging circumstances while submitting their nomination papers last week, now lament instances of the abduction of their consuls, proposers, and seconders during the scrutiny phase. On Tuesday, former state minister and prominent PTI leader Zartaj Gul Wazir voiced her complaint, asserting that law enforcement agencies had previously issued threats and subsequently abducted her lawyer from NA-185 Dera Ghazi Khan. Currently, her proposer and seconder have been apprehended from the Returning Officer's (RO) Office. In a video statement shared on social media, Zartaj highlighted that both her proposer and seconder are females hailing from respectable families, yet they were arrested without just cause at the RO Office. Expressing dismay at the treatment of PTI women by state machinery, she questioned how she would address the families of those who are facing incarceration for supporting her nomination. Read also: Tension in PTI ranks over state machinery’s 'interference' Zartaj pointed out that FIRs have been filed against proposers and seconders of the PTI's provincial assembly candidate from PP-288. Despite being lawyers, they were barred from entering the RO Office on false charges. The Dera Ghazi Khan RO Office, she noted, has been heavily fortified with a police presence to hinder the entry of PTI candidates and their supporters, leading to arrests. She appealed to the ECP, chief justice of Pakistan, and high courts to take cognisance of the situation, asserting that officials on election duty were under siege by law enforcement agencies. Zartaj questioned the possibility of free, fair, and transparent elections if PTI candidates, their proposers, and seconders were being arrested. Read: PHC suspends ECP's decision, restores PTI's 'bat' symbol Emphasising that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) appears apprehensive about the elections, she accused them of employing state machinery to exclude the PTI from the electoral contest. She challenged the PML-N to face the PTI in the election field without resorting to tactics such as abducting candidates and their representatives. Zartaj concluded by issuing a challenge to the PML-N, asserting that she had previously won with a lead of 37,000 votes and was now prepared to secure a lead of 137,000 votes. Similar grievances were expressed by several other PTI candidates, yet there is no clear stance from the state machinery regarding the reported heavy-handed actions against PTI candidates.

ECP denies ‘Bat’ offer amid Khattak’s claims

In a strange twist, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday faced conflicting assertions after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarian (PTI-P) chief Pervez Khattak stirred the political pot by alleging he had been "offered" the symbol ahead of the upcoming elections. The claims raised alarms among observers and the supporters of the PTI, speculating that the ECP's action to withdraw the symbol – amid concerns that the party was being limped by ‘manipulation’ – suggested a potential handover to the splinter group. However, the ECP swiftly countered these claims, with a spokesperson clarifying that no such symbol had been offered by the commission to Khattak or anyone else. The controversy followed hot on the heels of the ECP's recent ruling declaring the PTI’s intra-party polls as "unconstitutional" and subsequently revoking their rights to the iconic electoral symbol. Political analysts and politicians have also raised eyebrows over the microscopic scrutiny of the PTI ahead of the polls, pointing out that such moves could risk rendering the elections controversial amid PTI’s clamour for level playing field.Meanwhile, the PTI has termed the move another part of the “London plan”. A PTI lawyer said they would challenge the decision, which comes just seven weeks before polling day. The party denounced the ECP’s ruling as deeply flawed, illegal, biased, and an assault on the integrity of the electoral process. Read Khattak set to testify against Imran in £190m case PTI strongly condemned what it called an attempt to undermine the country's constitution, democratic values, and the transparency integral to fair elections through its recent decision. Addressing media representatives in Peshawar on Monday, Khattak, formerly a close confidant of PTI's founder Imran Khan, mentioned refusing the offer to take his previous party's electoral symbol. Nevertheless, he refrained from divulging specifics about who made the purported offer. Responding to Khattak's statements, the ECP denied the claims, reiterating that neither the PTI-P chief nor any other entity had been offered the "bat" symbol. Khattak, a former defence minister, parted ways with the PTI following the May 9 riots, triggered by Imran Khan’s arrest in a corruption case, which resulted in widespread vandalism of numerous military installations nationwide. The schism led Khattak to establish his own political party separate from the PTI. The ECP’s last week decision to strip the PTI of its electoral symbol had come hours after PTI representatives met with the commission officials following a Supreme Court order to remove the party's reservations regarding the lack of a level playing field.

Christian community assured of equality

The Christian community celebrated Christmas with religious devotion and respect across the province on Monday. Prayers were offered for national security, development, prosperity and, especially, for the oppressed Palestinians during the Christmas sermons. Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, along with the Punjab cabinet members, attended the prayer ceremony at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church on Lawrence Road in the provincial capital. The chief minister and his cabinet members cut the Christmas cake with the Christian community. The Archbishop of Lahore, Sebastian Francis Shaw, presented flowers to Mohsin Naqvi. The chief minister, while felicitating the Christians on Christmas, said that he shared the joys of the Christian community on the occasion of Christmas. Read Christmas preps in full swing He condemned the Jaranwala incident, saying that his government would not breathe a sigh of relief until the last person responsible for the incident got punished. The chief minister recalled that the churches and the houses that had been damaged during the Jaranwala incident were immediately restored. Financial assistance was given to the owners of the houses which had been burnt. Centres were established across Punjab to prevent incidents like Jaranwala from happening ever again. He recalled that for the first time in history, a special meeting of the Punjab cabinet had been held at the Jaranwala church to express solidarity with the Christian community. That meeting had approved the compensation for the damages in Jaranwala and a future action plan. Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that in the aftermath of the Jaranwala incident, Muslims had opened the doors of the mosques for their Christian brothers and sisters to worship there. “A message was conveyed to Christian brothers and sisters that our mosques are open for you. Come and worship here,” said the chief minister. Read Extensive Christmas security planned The gesture had been appreciated by national and international media, he said. The chief minister said that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) has also taught Muslims to be kind towards the minority communities. “Islam teaches that minority communities should be treated equally. Muslims, Christians and other minorities are all together. We are all Pakistanis, and we are all equal,” said the chief minister. The Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had also laid emphasis on protecting the rights of the minorities. Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi reminded his audience that the white colour in the Pakistani flag represented the minorities. He said that the Christian community had rendered invaluable services in the field of education. Many of the best educational institutes were run by the Christian community. “We are proud of the Sacred Heart Convent and other Christian community educational institutions,” Naqvi said. The chief minister said that his government had been ensuring implementation of the quota for the minorities vis-a-vis jobs and admissions. Published in The Express Tribune, December 26th, 2023.

PTI moves PHC against ECP order today

The PTI is set to approach the Peshawar High Court (PHC) today, challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to invalidate its intra-party polls. Shah Faisal Utmankhel, the senior vice president of the Insaf Lawyers Forum, confirmed the PTI's filing of a writ petition in the PHC on Tuesday, Dec 26, against the ECP’s December 22 order. The decision to contest the ECP's ruling arose from a meeting between the PTI founder, Imran Khan, currently detained, and Gohar Ali Khan, who elected as the PTI chairman in the December 2 party polls. Legal experts highlight the PTI’s struggle in issuing party tickets due to the ECP’s order. Additionally, if the decision persists, PTI might lose the opportunity to nominate candidates for reserved positions. The PTI recently declared its intention to challenge the ECP’s ruling in both the Supreme Court and the PHC. Gohar Ali Khan expressed disappointment in the ECP's verdict, citing flaws in the ruling. On December 22, a five-member ECP bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, invalidated PTI’s intra-party elections, stripping the former ruling party of its iconic cricket bat electoral symbol. Read also: PTI to mount court challenge to ECP ruling on intra-party polls This decision was announced after PTI representatives met with ECP officials, expressing concerns about an unfair playing field ahead of the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8. Despite his disappointment with the ECP's decision, Gohar Ali Khan said he remained hopeful for justice from the court. He instructed candidates to submit their nomination papers and assured that the party has contingency plans, intending to pursue legal recourse if needed. The PTI conducted intra-party elections earlier this month to comply with an ECP requirement for retaining the party’s electoral symbol. Gohar Ali Khan, nominated by Imran Khan, emerged as the new chairman. However, a founding PTI member, Akbar S Babar, contested the elections in the ECP, labelling them as a façade. On December 22, the ECP nullified the PTI elections, citing the party's non-compliance with directives and failure to conduct intra-party elections in accordance with PTI’s constitution and election regulations.

Christian community celebrates Xmas today

The Christian community is set to celebrate the joyous occasion of Christmas with fervour and enthusiasm nationwide, including in Karachi, today (Monday). Vibrant displays of Christmas trees and Stars of David adorn churches, homes, and neighbourhoods, while electric lanterns illuminate houses and streets. The festive celebrations commenced with Sunday mass in all churches of the metropolitan city, including St Patrick's and Holy Trinity. Christian priests conveyed the teachings of Jesus Christ, accompanied by special songs and prayers for peace, security, prosperity, and development in the country. These prayer events will continue until Monday. Read also: Alvi, Kakar urge harmony in Xmas messages Residential areas of the Christian community are hosting special Christmas events, embellishing houses with festive decorations. Christmas cakes are being cut, and Santa Claus is spreading joy by distributing gifts to children. In the spirit of Christmas, community members, from men to children, have adorned themselves with new clothes and exchanged greetings, gifts, and well-wishes. As the Christian community geared up on Sunday to complete their last minute preparations, markets in Saddar were seen crowded. A spring of Christmas trees appeared; some of which were green, others green and white and yet others just white. Clothes and gifts for children were everywhere while bakeries and cake-making companies were busy in preparing numerous orders for Christmas cakes. Foreign ambassadors and staff members also headed to Bohri Bazar for Christmas shopping while lanes of the market were exploding with a merry view of green trees. Christmas tree tradition Christmas trees and decorations add a spark to Christmas as the joys are incomplete without them. The healthy green Christmas tree symbolises hope and an everlasting life. Decorating homes with green twigs and plants is a part of the Ancient Roman tradition that is specially done in winters and on New Year's Eve. The pointed end of the Christmas tree rising towards the sky highlights the connection of man with the creator of the universe. From the last few years, there has been an increase in demand for Christmas trees. The ones most in demand are those that are 10-12 feet high. Made with plastic layering on iron wires, these Christmas trees are placed in hotels, trade centres, embassies and churches. With the rise in inflation and dollar rates, the prices of Christmas trees and their décor has risen too. Bohri Bazar on Christmas A visible increase in purchases is seen in the week right before Christmas. PHOTO: EXPRESS According to shopkeepers of the Bohri Bazar, the buying capacity of Christian community in Karachi is already quite low and now it's accompanied by uncontrollable inflation. With the depreciating value of the rupee, Christmas ornaments have become 20-25% more costly. The price of an 8-10ft long Christmas tree is Rs1,000 costlier than last year. The decoration items to decorate the trees are purchased separately which include shining stars, small Christmas bells, little Santas and icy bulbs. The shopkeepers observe that the shopping for Christmas items begins from the start of December and continue till Christmas Eve. A visible increase in purchases is seen in the week right before Christmas. Symbolism of Christmas decorations Christmas bells, amongst all decoration items, are loved the most as the bells symbolise the arrival of the season and to proclaim the birth of Christ. Bells are also traced back to pagan winter celebrations as noisemakers were used to scare away evil spirits in the night. The red bells reflect the colour of holly berries, which also had pagan symbolism during the winter celebrations in ancient Rome. Green is another popular colour for Christmas bells that signifies everlasting light and life. These bells are sold according to their sizes starting at Rs100 and going up to Rs500 each. They are made from plastic used only for decoration on the trees. The Christmas wreath is also an essential part of the decorations. The wreath made from flowers, ribbons and twigs are placed on doors of houses. The round wreath symbolises unconditional love from God. Snowmen are also used, despite the fact that there is no snow in Karachi, they are of utter importance in Christmas as it highlights the sensation of snowfall. In Bohri Bazar, statues of snowmen in big and small sizes are also sold along with huge Christmas stars to be placed on top of the Christmas tree. Santa clothes Santa Claus' clothes and caps are a major attraction for children amongst the Christian community. Children like dressing up in Santa clothes to personify Santa Claus who spreads joy and love. Due to the lack of purchasing power of new clothes, shopkeepers at Bohri Bazar usually stock up red and white coloured jackets or coats. Many people prefer buying the Santa clothes from foreign markets and then resell them right after Christmas. Santa Claus clothes are available for newly-born children as well as for the elderly who love to adapt Santa Claus' appearance to distribute joys of Christmas. Sharing love On Christmas, apart from the Christian community, people from other communities also present cakes to their friends. Bakeries have prepared special cakes that are sold all day long. Along with that, five-star hotels of the cities and large-scale cake shops have specially prepared Christmas themed desserts, sales of which have already begun. Courier companies are also providing special cake-delivery service for the day. The sweets and bakers shops on Jail Road and Bahadurabad are seen crowded while the bakeries in Saddar are receiving huge orders for cakes. The manager of a cake shop situated near Guru Mandir, told The Express Tribune that on Christmas mostly small and medium-sized ice-cream cakes, chocolate cakes, and crunch cakes are sold. People love gifting dry fruit cakes to their friends as a speciality of winter. Security alert As Christmas approaches, the Sindh police chief, IG Rifat Mukhtar Raja, has issued directives for enhanced security measures across the province, ensuring comprehensive safety for both Quaid-i-Azam Day and Christmas. Emphasis is placed on robust security at Mazar-I-Quaid, surrounding areas, and main gates, with the Bomb Disposal Squad conducting thorough sweeping and clearance processes. For Christmas, the police chief stressed extraordinary security in churches, missionary schools, and educational institutions throughout the province, especially in Christian community areas. Coordination with relevant police stations and event organisers is deemed crucial, with SHOs instructed to be present during celebrations. The focus is on real-time updates and coordination through wireless control bases. Looking ahead to the death anniversary of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto on December 27, the police chief underscores the need for highly coordinated security arrangements for public gatherings. Patrols, picketing, random snap checks, motorcycle patrolling, and intelligence-based countermeasures are key components, with plainclothes personnel assigned special responsibilities. Read: Parks get new look ahead of Christmas Meanwhile, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Managing Director Naseemuddin Mirani visited various churches, inspecting sanitation arrangements and meeting church administrators. Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab's instructions for cleaning, fumigation, and lime spraying around churches were duly carried out. SSWMB’s managing director has directed officers and private companies to maintain cleaning arrangements and stay in touch with church administrations. Lime spraying and disinfectant measures have been implemented, with Christmas cakes being cut at the SSWMB offices in different districts. On this occasion, the SSWMB MD extends Merry Christmas to all Christian employees, acknowledging their dedication and hard work. He emphasises problem-solving and celebration of employees' events as institutional priorities.

Alvi, Kakar urge harmony in Xmas messages

President Dr Arif Alvi and Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Sunday issued separate messages on the eve of Christmas felicitating members of Christian community on the occasion while also highlighting the right of minorities under the Constitution. “Our religion, Islam fully recognises and protects the rights of minorities. The Government of Pakistan provides equal opportunities to all citizens irrespective of their colour, class and creed,” President Dr Arif said in his statement. He referred to the Quaid-e-Azam’s historic speech of August 11, 1947 in which the founder of the nation stated that everyone, irrespective of colour, creed, and religion, would have equal rights, privileges, and obligations and complete religious freedom in the state of Pakistan. “As we gather with family and friends to celebrate the festive occasion, let us also remember the values that bind us together as a nation—respect for diversity, protection of minority rights, and a commitment to building a tolerant and inclusive society,” he said. Extending his warmest and heartfelt greetings to the Christian community on the joyous occasion, he assured them that the government is committed to ensuring the protection of the rights of all religious minorities in Pakistan. “Together, we can work towards a brighter and more harmonious future for our great nation,” he said. Caretaker PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar said the Christian community has laid down their lives for strengthening the foundation of the country and for its integrity and solidarity. Read also: Extensive Christmas security planned The PM said the Prophet of Allah Hazrat Essa (AS) healed the pain of humanity and took the message of God to the whole of humanity. Hazrat Essa (AS), the PM said, reformed humanity with teachings of peace, brotherhood, tolerance and forbearance which led to the success of humans. “The moral teachings and the guidance of the Prophet were a beacon for humanity for all times to come. In the present age, there is an acute need to follow Hazrat Essa's message of human compassion, affection, tolerance and fraternity,” he added. He said the state and every citizen have the responsibility to protect places of worship. The PM said the white colour in Pakistan's flag represents minorities including the Christian community which played a vital role in the progress and development of the country in all fields including defence, judiciary, arts, sports and education. "The issues faced by Pakistan can only be resolved when we rise above the distinctions of colour, ethnicity, and religion and work day and night as a united nation for the progress of the country. “Pakistan is our home and on this occasion of Christmas we should pledge that together we will make Pakistan a model of religious tolerance and brotherhood and play our foremost role in taking our country out of all kinds of difficulties," he concluded.

PTI overcomes challenges in nomination papers

Amid the formidable challenges, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has achieved a significant milestone in the submission of nomination papers for the majority of its candidates set to participate in the upcoming general elections on February 8. Among the notable party leaders who have successfully submitted their nomination papers are PTI founder Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Zain Qureshi, Mehr Bano Qureshi, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Ali Amin Gandapur, Monis Elahi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Hammad Azhar, Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Sheikh Imtiaz Mehmood, Taimur Malik, Sanam Javed and others. Aliya Hamza Malik’s nomination papers have also been submitted. She is a PTI candidate and is in prison with Khadija Shah and others. However, the path for all PTI candidates has been exceptionally challenging, despite the clear directives of the Supreme Court and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Law enforcement agencies have allegedly exhibited questionable behaviour towards PTI candidates, as evident in numerous social media posts where candidates and their legal counsels exposed instances of lawlessness. These posts included video clips depicting officials in civilian clothes and police uniforms attempting to snatch PTI candidates' nomination papers. Read also: LHC tells ROs to receive papers of two PTI candidates Reports of abductions and arrests of PTI candidates and their legal representatives flooded social media platforms nationwide. The circumstances faced by the nation's largest political party and ECP officials across Punjab have become increasingly challenging due to the high-handedness of law enforcement agencies. M Abdul Wadood Khan, the district election commissioner of Lahore, has filed a written complaint with the provincial election commissioner, Punjab. He reported multiple complaints from returning officers in Lahore regarding interference by law enforcement agencies, especially the police department, in their official duties. Khan emphasised the urgency of addressing these complaints to avoid any hindrance in the ongoing election activities. Simultaneously, various PTI leaders, expressing grievances during the submission of nomination papers, criticised the ECP and caretaker governments for allegedly failing to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of conducting free and fair elections in the country. Abdullah Warraich, PTI Gujrat District Information Secretary, highlighted that despite court orders, the returning officer of PP-31 refused to accept nomination papers for Chaudhry Saleem Sarwar Joda and Salman Sarwar Joda. Read: Tension in PTI ranks over state machinery’s 'interference' He lamented that the police were snatching nomination papers from PTI candidates while the courts appeared helpless. PTI candidates and their legal representatives from Gujrat also reported a police raid on Zahoor Palace, resulting in the arrest of the consul of PTI Central President Pervaiz Elahi and Moonis Elahi, including advocate Irfan Bashir. Salman Sarwar, son of PTI Gujrat leader Saleem Sarwar Jora, expressed frustration, stating, "Our lawyers have been attempting to submit nomination papers for my father since December 20, but local administration and police officials are preventing their entry into the RO office. The commission should take notice of this malpractice." In a post on PTI's official social media handle, it was asserted, "Despite clear powers from Lahore High Court, Lahore police is not allowing the attorney of Hammad Azhar to file nomination papers in NA 129. We are filing a contempt petition in Lahore High Court, and luckily, it's open today. How much will you violate the law and Constitution.” Another social media post highlighted police officials creating obstacles for PTI candidates while CCTV cameras installed at the site were obscured by cloth in an attempt to conceal the heavy-handed actions of the police officials. Several candidates also complained that returning officers left their offices during working hours to avoid submitting nomination papers for PTI candidates.

IHC validates MDCAT 2022 results for admissions in 2024

In a landmark decision that brings relief to thousands of medical aspirants, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) declared on Saturday that the Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Test (MDCAT) results of November 2022 were valid for two years as per the regulations in place at last year. The judgment issued by Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb on a petition filed by one Laiba Rauf, means that the students who passed the MDCAT in November 2022 can now seek admission to medical colleges in 2024. Rauf had challenged the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council's (PMDC) public notice of July 14, 2023, which stated that MDCAT results from 2022 would not be valid for admissions in 2023, despite the regulations at that time clearly stating a two-year validity period. Read also: SHC issues notices against re-leak of MDCAT paper The court found that the PMDC's attempt to retract the two-year validity period through a subsequent administrative decision was illegal and violated the rights of students, who had appeared for the exam under the previous regulations. "This right cannot be withdrawn from the petitioner by a subsequent administrative decision," the court stated. Justice Aurangzeb further directed the PMDC to bear the expenses incurred by Rauf in pursuing the case.

Not govt's policy to oust anyone from political arena: PM

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar has reiterated the government's stance on ensuring an inclusive political process, emphasising that it is not the government's policy to expel anyone from the political arena and pledged to investigate if any individual is prevented from participating in the election process. Speaking during an interview with a private TV channel on Saturday, Kakar reflected on the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, characterising it as not an unusual event. He expressed bewilderment at the widespread chaos that ensued across the country on May 9, referring to the events surrounding Khan's arrest. Kakar remarked, "I think the people involved in May 9 should not be public representatives," but he clarified that he does not believe the entire PTI should be linked to the events of that day. Addressing concerns related to a lack of a level-playing field for any political party, Kakar assured that he would investigate such complaints. "If anyone is prevented from the election process, we will investigate it and talk to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in this regard," he affirmed. Also read: Imran looks to SC to have Toshakhana conviction suspended “I voted for PTI as a party in 2013 and 2018 elections and I am not ashamed of it… I once defended PTI. The PTI government was expected to improve governance and the economy,” he remarked. The statement was made the same day the PTI founder moved the Supreme Court seeking the suspension of his conviction in the Toshakhana case until the final judgment on his appeal, pending in the federal capital's high court, is announced. Represented by Advocate Latif Khosa, Khan argued that being declared ineligible before the elections infringes upon his fundamental rights and raised concerns about the election commission's swift decision, alleging bias. Khan urged the apex court to nullify the Islamabad High Court's decision and suspend the sentencing in the Toshakhana case. He stressed the urgency of the matter, emphasising the upcoming general elections and asserting that the leader of the country's "largest political party" should not be excluded from the electoral process. The capital’s high court on Tuesday had dismissed Khan’s application seeking suspension of his conviction in the gift repository case. The decision effectively eliminates the possibility of the PTI founder contesting the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024. The Election Commission of Pakistan had disqualified Khan as a lawmaker on August 8, following his conviction in the Toshakhana case by a trial court on August 5.

Mohammed Hanif returns award in protest against Baloch march violence

Renowned Pakistani author and journalist Mohammed Hanif announced on Saturday that he is returning the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, the third-highest civilian award in Pakistan, as a protest against the violence inflicted upon Baloch marchers. Hanif, celebrated for his works such as "A Case of Exploding Mangoes," expressed his dismay over a video featuring a Baloch girl pleading for the "right to live." In a statement on his social media account, he criticised authorities for the mistreatment of Baloch protesters, stating his shame at witnessing a new generation denied basic dignity. "In protest, returning my Sitara-e-Imtiaz, given to me by a state that continues to abduct and torture Baloch citizens. Journalists of my generation have seen @SammiBaluch and @MahrangBaloch_ grow up in protest camps. Ashamed to witness a new generation being denied basic dignity," wrote Hanif on his X handle. His decision to return the award follows the recent march by Baloch protesters, primarily led by women, against the enforced disappearances of Baloch persons. The march, organised by the Baloch Yakjehti Council (BYC), reached Islamabad on Wednesday and faced baton charges and mass arrests by the Islamabad Police. The crackdown prompted condemnations from human rights bodies, political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamat-e-Islami (JI). The government later clarified that force was used to prevent a potential "catastrophe." The Islamabad High Court (IHC) also weighed in, warning the police against obstructing the Baloch protesters' constitutional right to protest. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq stated during a hearing that the protesters should be allowed to exercise their constitutional right. Also read: Undeterred, Baloch women to hold sit-in On Friday, the court directed the police to release the detainees to the organisers of the long march. The marchers have announced a "peaceful rally" at the Islamabad Press Club on Sunday at 10am. Supporting the marchers' calls for the protection of fundamental human rights, PPP's Farhatullah Babar, who attended the protesters' sit-in outside Islamabad's press club, labeled enforced disappearances as a violation of basic human rights. He urged those involved in illegal activities to be presented in courts. Similarly, JI's Senator Mushtaq condemned the actions of Islamabad police and called for the recovery of all missing persons. Despite the formation of a five-member government committee to address the issues raised by the protesting Baloch marchers, there appears to be no significant progress as of now.

Embracing the winter solstice: A celestial dance

The winter solstice has ushered in the northern hemisphere countries, casting December 23 as the shortest day and the longest night of the year, and Pakistan is no exception. The night between Thursday and Friday extended for approximately 14 hours. Following this celestial event, nights will gradually decrease in duration while daytime periods lengthen. The equilibrium between day and night will be achieved on March 22 and 23. Twice annually, day and night share equal durations; otherwise, one prevails over the other at different times. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) terms this phenomenon the transition of equinoxes and solstices. Since June 22 of this year, daytime durations have been decreasing in the northern hemisphere, including Pakistan. Presently, daytime will begin to lengthen again. The Thursday-to-Friday night marked the longest of the year, spanning around 14 hours. Thursday's daytime was four hours shorter than usual (10 hours). With the onset of the winter solstice, nighttime durations will decrease by one to two minutes daily. PMD Director in Karachi Zubairuddin says that four times a year, including the winter solstice, summer solstice, spring equinox, and autumn equinox, nature harmonizes, balancing day and night durations twice. Post-December 21, each passing day brings a lengthening of daytime and a shortening of nighttime. By March 21, day and night durations will achieve perfect equilibrium. Starting March 22, days will lengthen while nights shorten, signaling the impending arrival of summer and the commencement of the spring season.   The third phase unfolds on June 21, when days are at their longest and nights at their shortest. The final phase takes place on September 22 during the Autumnal Equinox, after which nights start lengthening again within this celestial cycle.

Press organisations decry media curbs

Three leading journalistic organisations have strongly condemned the ban imposed on media coverage of certain court cases, particularly the diplomatic cipher case. These organisations view these restrictions as attempts to deprive people of their right to access information and have urged both Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to take immediate action on the issue. The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), and the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) issued a joint statement on Thursday, expressing deep concern over such restrictive measures. Read Social media reportedly down across Pakistan Last week, a trial court placed a ban on media coverage of its proceedings that are based on allegations that former prime minister Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi violated the Official Secrets Act, 1923, by misusing a diplomatic cipher. The journalistic organisations emphasised that such bans infringe upon the constitutional right of the people to access information. They highlighted the increasing pressure faced by media personnel and organisations from state institutions, including announced and unannounced censorship and restrictions on covering specific court cases and political events. These measures, they argued, aimed to curb freedom of expression and access to information. "In this oppressive environment, the judiciary remains the only beacon of hope for providing relief to the people. However, if even this window of hope is closed, the situation might deteriorate further," the statement added. Read Imran moves IHC against cypher case in-camera trial The PFUJ, CPNE, and AEMEND underscored that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and other state institutions have consistently pressured media organisations, creating an atmosphere of fear and constraint. "Media organisations encounter new, illegal, and unannounced restrictions on a daily basis. Such a situation is unacceptable, as the public has the right to be informed about ongoing events through the media," the organisations asserted. The PFUJ, CPNE, and AEMEND reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding freedom of expression. "[We] are determined to fight for freedom of expression and will pursue all legal avenues to address these issues. [We] are initiating consultations with stakeholders in this regard," the statement said.

FIA acts against ‘illegal registration’ of 15 colleges

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has initiated action against the alleged “illegal registration” of 15 medical colleges. The FIA anti-corruption circle has started an investigation, by summoning four officials of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) including its deputy director (law) Sarah Rabab and assistant administration Shaan Elahi. The FIA has also issued a letter to the PMDC registrar in this connection. According to sources, these 15 colleges were recognised by the defunct Pakistan Medical Council (PMC) in the year 2020 "without inspection". The PMC did not conduct an inspection even in the year 2021. Two office-bearers of the body, Dr Khurshid Ahmad and Dr Sitara Hassan, did not examine these colleges in the year 2022. Dr Sitara was the member (education) in the year 2020. Read also: FIA unveils trafficking hotline initiative The present PMDC has stopped admissions into these 15 colleges for the ongoing year. On June 1, 2023, the PMDC registrar wrote to all colleges, telling them not to admit students this year, pending inspection and council’s decision. These “illegally registered” 15 medical institutes include Abbottabad International Medical College; Frontier Medical and Dental College Abbottabad; Azra Naheed Dental College in Lahore; Dow International Dental College in Karachi; Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College in Karachi; Khairpur Medical College; Muhammad Medical College in Mirpurkhas; Peshawar Medical College; Shifa College of Dentistry in Islamabad; Suleman Roshan Medical College in Tando Adam; Swat Medical College; and Watim Medical and Dental College in Rawalpindi. The PMDC spokesperson could not be contacted for comments despite repeated attempts. Read: FIA bin Mercedes conflict of interest probe The Pakistan Medical Council Ordinance established the present-day PMDC as a statutory body in 1962 and all provincial councils were dissolved. Three amendments were passed thereafter as the Medical and Dental Council (Amendment) Act in 1973, 1999 and 2012 In 2019, President Dr Arif Alvi passed a law and dissolved the PMDC to create a new body named the Pakistan Medical Council (PMC). However after three years in 2022, the Islamabad High Court restored the PMDC and declared the formation of the PMC – a body formed through a presidential ordinance in its place – as illegal. A rising population of feral animals and invasive plants on Astola, Pakistan’s only marine protected island, is posing a growing threat to its rich but fragile biodiversity, with some rare seabird species almost eliminated, environmentalists warn. Located in the northern part of the Arabian Sea, east of Pasni district in the southwestern Balochistan province, Astola is the country’s largest offshore island and only marine protected area known for its rich marine biodiversity. The island is one of the world’s largest breeding sites of the yellow-billed tern, a small seabird found in Latin America, apart from supporting a large variety of water birds such as coursers, gulls and plovers. Its glistening beaches are also nesting grounds for the endangered green turtle and hawksbill turtle, while the Astola saw-scaled viper, a subspecies of the Russell’s viper is endemic to this small island, according to Muhammad Moazzam Khan, a technical adviser for WWF-Pakistan. Read also: Green turtles fight to survive against Pakistan's urban sprawl However, a gradual increase in the number of stray cats, as well as rats, has resulted in a rapid decline in the population of turtles and seabirds in recent years. They are attacking and killing nesting seabirds, while also damaging and eating their eggs, according to experts. “Astola is known to be the world’s largest breeding colony of the yellow-billed tern, but cats have now eliminated the bird from the island,” Khan told Anadolu. “Many seabirds, especially terns, used to make thousands of nests on isolated rocky platforms and ledges all across the island, but this is no longer the case as these feral animals have wreaked havoc on the island’s already fragile biodiversity.” ‘Ferocious hunters’ Cats are not part of the natural fauna of Astola and were actually brought there by local fishermen to hunt rats. According to Khan, a local fisherman released a pair of cats on the island in the 1970s to control rat population, which was feasting on seabirds and migratory quails. The rats would attack seabirds’ nests, while also damaging fishing nets and other equipment laid out by sailors. Read: Illegal fishing imperils aqua life “Rather than protecting the nests and fishing nets, these cats have turned out to be a permanent nemesis,” Khan said. He said they are “nocturnal and ferocious hunters that have become the top predator of the island,” adding that they even feed on reptiles including skinks and agamas. “Astola, which was once a crowded bird colony, is deserted today. The few birds that still nest here are careful to do so on the detached rocks off the island’s southern shore,” he said. ‘Difficult to control’ As part of efforts to protect the island’s biodiversity, WWF-Pakistan launched a program to exterminate the cats in 2012, culling at least 18 adult cats. However, the current number on the island is estimated to be more than 50. “Their population is difficult to control because of their nocturnal habits and the island’s treacherous terrain, which makes it extremely difficult to track them down,” Khan explained. Invasive plants like mesquite are also spreading rapidly on the island, covering a part of its southern section and smothering other plant species. The exotic shrub, which is drought tolerant and has deep roots, was first spotted on the island in 2010. Also read: Forest fire imperils wildlife in Soon Valley According to Shabina Faraz, a Karachi-based environmentalist, mesquite can be an “aggressive invader” that replaces native vegetation very quickly. “There is an urgent need to develop and implement a plan for eradication of invasive plant and animal species to restore the natural habitat of the Astola island,” she said. Sharifuddin Baloch, chief conservator at the Balochistan Wildlife and Forest Department, said a fresh survey will soon be carried out to ascertain the extent of the problem before chalking out a future course of action. Currently, there is an awareness campaign ongoing to persuade local fishermen to stop dumping fishing nets or garbage on the island, which is a major factor in all of this, he told Anadolu. A field station is also being set up at Pasni to monitor and evaluate the situation in terms of biodiversity loss, he added, acknowledging that some “urgent steps” are required to mitigate threats that have spiralled due to years of neglect.

Issuance of passports resumes after a month’s lull

The Passport Office on Tuesday said that the issue of delay in the issuance of the key travel document had been resolved as lamination paper had been arranged by the authorities. A scarcity of lamination paper, which is used in passports and is typically imported from France, as per Directorate General of Immigration & Passports, resulted in a nationwide shortage of the travel document since November. Hence, people, who need the green-coloured book for travelling abroad for study, work, or leisure were stuck. A senior Peshawar Passport Office officer had disclosed to The Express Tribune under the condition of anonymity that they could presently only process 12 to 13 passports per day as compared to 3,000 to 4,000 passports per day previously and that they had no idea when the pendency would be improved. “People may have to wait for another month or two,” added the official. Read also: Reports of delay in printing passports ‘baseless’ A Passport Office spokesperson said the issuance of passports had resumed after the supply of lamination paper. The spokesperson said, “Printing is being completed in three days in the fast track category while under the Urgent Passport Application, it is being ensured within five days.” He added that issuance of normal passport was being ensured within a month. As the lamination paper had been received, he said, all reports regarding delay in issuance of passports were baseless.

President urges energy efficiency for climate

President Dr Arif Alvi on Monday called for improving energy efficiency, adopting sustainable practices, and changing attitudes and priorities to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.  “Transitioning to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and reforestation are key to curb the adverse impacts on the planet’s climate and ecosystems,” the president said while addressing an event with respect to a project “Green Presidency of Pakistan” at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. He noted that the modern world with changing priorities and attitudes was becoming dangerous which must be stopped to curb the adverse impacts of climate change. The Green Presidency of Pakistan is a flagship initiative under which a one-megawatt solar PV system was installed, along with effective implementation of energy conservation and efficiency measures. The president maintained that the initiative would result in a reduction in energy usage by Aiwan-e-Sadr by 42.5%. This energy savings is equivalent to a reduction of 3,144 tonnes of greenhouse gases or a plantation of 142,090 mature trees. Read also: Alvi issues ordinance to curb power theft  “It is a matter of great pleasure that, out of 129 projects from around the world, the Green Presidency Project of Pakistan has been conferred with the prestigious award of “International Energy Project of the Year 2023,” he added. He also expressed gratitude to the Association of Energy Engineers USA for recognizing with the esteemed Best International Energy Project of the Year Award for 2023. The presient called for promoting peace in the world and discouraging wars that were a big cause of deviating the world’s focus on mitigating global warming.  He said despite contributing less than 1% in carbon emission, Pakistan suffered huge losses in last year’s devastating floods that occurred due to global warming and climate change.

Karachi’s voting choices disappoint Nawaz despite achievements

Expressing disappointment over the electoral choices of the people of Karachi, former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on Monday stated that peace in the country’s financial capital was restored during the tenure of his government but the votes went to other parties. He expressed these remarks while addressing a parliamentary board meeting in Karachi. He urged the people of Karachi to introspect, stating, "Look within yourselves; it's not a good thing when the work is ours, but the vote goes elsewhere. We worked [for Karachi] with sincerity." مسلم لیگ (ن) کے قائد محمد نواز شریف لاہور میں صوبہ سندھ اور کراچی سے امیدواروں کے انتخاب کے لئے منعقدہ پارلیمانی بورڈ کے اجلاس سے خطاب کر رہے ہیں https://t.co/u2tJxnq2td — PMLN (@pmln_org) December 18, 2023 Sharif highlighted his commitment to development projects for Karachi and Sindh, asserting, "In my mind, there is a project. The Karachi-Hyderabad motorway has been built, but in my view, it's not a motorway. We will build a Karachi-Hyderabad motorway that surpasses the standard of Lahore-Islamabad motorway." The former premier questioned the lack of progress in Karachi and demanded answers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which emerged as the leading party in the city following the 2018 general elections. However, in elections, the vote went to Jamaat-e-Islami. I ask Chitral residents if it's fair that we build tunnels for you, and you vote for someone else.” Denying allegations of wrongdoing, Sharif defended his record, saying, "Despite spending more time in prison than in government, facing false cases that ended in acquittals, we did not lose courage. Today, we are here." Reflecting on his past terms as premier in 1999 and 2017, the PML-N supreme leader said he was surprised when he was ousted from the prime minister’s office. "In 2017, the country was prosperous, CPEC was underway, petrol prices were low, and the rupee was strong. However, a selected person was brought in to replace me.” Also read: Pakistan suffered because ‘ladla’ was brought to power: Nawaz He said that the Indian prime minister came to Pakistan during his tenure and the world was saying that soon Pakistan would become a regional power and would be part of G-20 nations. However, he added that all the progress was reversed. “We had said goodbye to the IMF but the selected once again approached it. We did not take loans from China during our government, instead, we returned loans. If the progress had continued, we would have become a big power today.” Sharif criticised his ouster and the state of affairs following his removal as PM, remarking, “No one asked how a person who was a prime minister in the morning suddenly became a hijacker by night." The ex-prime minister asserted that his administration successfully constructed motorways nationwide, with the exception of the segment between Sukkur and Hyderabad, a project that the PTI government failed to complete.

PPP can shake hands with all but PTI

It appears that the PPP is amenable to forming electoral alliances and seat adjustment deals with all political parties in the upcoming general elections, except for the PTI, which has been in the eye of the storm since May 9 incidents. On Sunday, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zadari during a visit to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (K-P) capital forbade the PPP’s provincial leadership from entering into any electoral deal with Imran Khan’s party. Interestingly, the K-P is still regarded as the bastion of the PTI which ruled the province for almost 10 years until premature dissolution of its legislature in January this year. Earlier, some PPP leaders had expressed their party’s willingness to join hands with the PTI particularly in Punjab province to counter the PML-N. However, Zardari on Sunday instructed the party leaders in the K-P not to form alliances or seat adjustments with the PTI in the elections. These party leaders had called on the PPP supreme leader to discuss strategy for the upcoming general elections slated for February 8. Read  Zardari praises CJP Isa’s resolve According to sources privy to the meeting, the PPP leader empowered the provincial leadership to independently decide on alliances or seat adjustments with other parties and urged prompt resolution of internal party differences. Interestingly, the JU-F which enjoys considerable public support appears to be the main beneficiary of the ongoing crackdown against the PTI in the context of the province and four political parties including the PPP have contacted it for seat adjustment deals. The PPP, the ANP, and the QWP will hold separate talks with the JUI-F today (Monday) at the party’s Mufti Mahmood Center in Peshawar. According to Abdul Jalil Jan, the provincial secretary of information for JUI-F, the party has already held two rounds of talks with the PML-N, and a third round is expected soon. “The doors are open for negotiations with all political parties,” he said. In Peshawar, Zardari also met with K-P Governor Ghulam Ali and leaders of the JUI-F. The former president also attended the marriage ceremony of the son of former provincial minister Ziaullah Afridi before returning to Karachi. Read more PPP interviews aspiring candidates Earlier, former minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi met with Zardari in Islamabad and announced joining the PPP. Ahmed Saeed Kazmi was also present in the meeting.  The religious scholar also joined the PPP. PPP leaders from Balochistan, Jamal Raisani and Farid Raisani, also held a meeting with Asif Ali Zardari. The leaders discussed the political situation in Balochistan and the upcoming polls. Zardari will arrive in Turbat for a one-day visit today and will address a workers' convention during this visit, various political personalities are expected to join the PPP. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also chaired the parliamentary board meeting of the party’s K-P chapter where discussions were held regarding the eligibility and qualifications of the ticket contenders. Crucial decisions were made during the meeting, said sources. The PPP chairman said PPP office-bearers will contest elections at constituencies where the party fails to get election candidates. He asked the provincial leadership to finalize the list of PPP candidates in the province within a week. Bilawal Bhutto will also hold further consultations with provincial leadership upon his arrival in Lahore tomorrow. Additionally, a report on interactions with candidates who failed to get tickets from the PML-N will also be presented at this occasion.

Following in Imran, the narratologist’s footsteps

Seated in a closed room and flanked by Pakistan’s flag on the right and party flag on the left, the speakers engage the nation. With a microphone affixed near the chest and papers placed on the table, they resort to a well-rehearsed script – blaming rivals, lamenting past governance, expressing regret for public suffering and passionately pitching a return to power. This political theatrics feels familiar. Former premier Imran Khan perfected the art, and now, a leading contender for the next PM, Nawaz Sharif, has adopted the same: preferring to address the nation from a controlled setting instead of rallying in extremes. Previously, only the prime ministers or the president used to address the nation via national television but the trend has changed in the recent past. Now, the bigwigs of the political parties use social media platforms to address people but label it as an address to the nation. One example of this was when Nawaz delivered his address to the nation the other day emulating what Imran used to do through social media. Read  Pakistan’s political twister “This is the age of Imran Khan,” renowned political expert, Zaigham Khan said, saying “Imran Khan is the trendsetter of the 21st century while others follow his footsteps.” On the new trend of addressing the nation when one is actually addressing his party workers and supporters, the expert noted that Imran had started the trend after he was ousted from power but “Nawaz has followed suit now.” Earlier, Zaigham recalled that only the head of the state or the prime minister would address the nation through state television but social media has changed the trajectory of politics and political narrative, adding that leaders like Imran, Nawaz and others do not hold the top positions right now but they communicate with authority and aura via social media. The only difference, he noted, is that Imran is the trendsetter while others have simply been copying his ideas and expecting similar results. In the age of new media which gives wings to narrative, Zaigham said that Imran has been using social media as a leverage to spread his narrative. “Imran Khan is the narratologist; he makes his narrative fly on social media” while other parties have no understanding of how he frames things, saying they just start doing what Imran does as far as spreading the message via social media is concerned. Read  PTI promises political resurgence ahead However, Zaigham recalled, Pakistan Peoples Party was the trendsetter before PTI, noting that it was Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s train journey from Rawalpindi to Lahore and the welcome that he received that really gave birth to PPP. So, he added, the train march that other parties opted for later on was started by Bhutto, regretting that political parties were less open to fresh ideas. “Earlier, political parties would organize rallies at Mochi Darwaza, Nasir Bagh or Liaquat Bagh but much is happening in the virtual space these days,” Professor Tahir Naeem Malik of NUML University said, adding “Political activities were mainly being managed through social media these days.” Admitting that Imran Khan is the trendsetter today as his interaction is wider ranging from YouTubers to lawyers and from political bigwigs to the general public, the professor said that it was Bhutto who would meet university students, writers, farmers, trade unionists and the general public, saying political leaders do such kind of politics to stay connected with people. “Other parties’ leaders do not even meet general people for weeks and months,” he noted. As opposed to Imran and Bhutto, Professor Malik said that Nawaz Sharif has only addressed a gathering in Lahore upon his arrival and he has since preferred to have “drawing room interaction” or interaction with people via virtual space. Read ‘Nawaz’s return poised to shift political landscape’ He noted that Nawaz went to Quetta but stayed in a five-star hotel and the little interaction he had with people was after barring media from attending it. “PML-N was a drawing party and going back to drawing room politics is natural for it,” Professor Malik said. When asked about the closed-room address to the nation and whether it was due to security concerns, Malik didn’t fully agree and said that Nawaz and several others do not face the kind of threats that the Awami National Party and ex-premier Benazir Bhutto faced. He concluded by saying that drawing room politics is no substitute for street politics, saying only Nawaz made PML-N somewhat an "awami party" as many others neither have much public appeal nor seem comfortable in reaching out to the masses.

Fazl invited to Kabul amid rising tensions

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (JUI-F), has been invited by the Afghan government to travel to Kabul in a bid to alleviate escalating tensions between the neighboring countries due to cross-border terrorist activities. The formal invitation from the Afghan government was delivered to the JUI-F chief by the Afghan envoy, who met him in Islamabad on Saturday. Aslam Ghauri, a spokesperson for the JUI-F, informed The Express Tribune on Sunday that Maulana Fazl had accepted the invitation. It is anticipated that the JUI-F chief will visit the neighboring country after submitting his nomination papers for the February 8 elections. Ghauri clarified that Fazl's visit was not associated with the Pakistani government, as the invitation came from the Afghan Taliban government. Sources, however, suggest that this development is part of the Afghan Taliban's efforts to utilize the JUI-F chief's influence to ease tensions with Pakistan. The ongoing tensions stem from repeated attacks inside Pakistan by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates from across the border. Read Pak-Afghan relations — DI Khan attack and TTP Following the December 12 terrorist attack in DI Khan that resulted in the martyrdom of 23 soldiers, Pakistan lodged a strong protest with Kabul. This incident marked the deadliest attack in a decade. Considering potential strategies to address the heightened threat, Pakistan is contemplating cross-border air strikes. Against this backdrop, the invitation extended to the JUI-F chief by the Afghan Taliban appears as an attempt to avert an undesirable turn of events. Several Afghan Taliban members, including government officials, have received education from seminaries managed by the JUI-F. Some analysts speculate that Pakistan might leverage the influence of the JUI-F chief to address the TTP issue. However, sources in the JUI-F indicate that a meeting with TTP representatives during Fazl's visit is not scheduled. Read more  TTP, TTA and new round of proxy wars Previously, the JUI-F chief visited Qatar to engage with Afghan Taliban leaders during US attempts to negotiate a peace deal. In a move to alleviate mounting pressure, the Afghan Taliban government claimed to have apprehended several TTP members. According to the Afghan interior ministry spokesperson speaking to Tolo News, approximately 35 to 40 TTP members were arrested in the past year. The spokesperson emphasized the Afghan government's commitment to preventing the use of Afghan soil for anti-Pakistan activities. There has been no immediate reaction to the Afghan government's statement. Pakistan has called for substantial and effective measures against the TTP, urging their extradition. However, it remains uncertain if the detained TTP militants will be handed over to Pakistan. Some observers view the claims of arresting TTP operatives as an attempt by the Afghan Taliban to avert any adverse actions from Pakistan following recent terrorist attacks.
