On the occasion of International Transgender Day, members of the transgender community in Faisalabad voiced serious concerns over discrimination and the non-implementation of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018, particularly the failure to enforce the three percent job quota in government and semi-government institutions. Dr Farri, a Victim Support Officer at a Police Service Center, said despite being highly qualified, transgender individuals continue to face barriers in securing stable employment. She holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad but struggled to find work in her field. Recalling her experience, she said that while working temporarily at a private dairy farm, she faced verbal abuse and insensitive remarks from employers and the public. "People would say it felt strange seeing me treat animals," she added. Dr Farri said she applied to several government departments under the reserved quota but was not selected. She acknowledged that former Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar facilitated employment opportunities for transgender individuals at Police Service Centers, but noted that these positions are contractual and lack job security. She further highlighted that employees are paid Rs30,000 per month, below minimum wage standards, making it difficult to sustain a livelihood amid rising inflation. "We cannot support our families or live with dignity under these conditions," she said, urging the government to grant permanent employment and fair salaries. Dr Farri added that despite completing only six months of service, uncertainty looms over her future due to the contractual nature of the job, with no policy in place for regularisation. She also pointed out that transgender individuals face frequent harassment in public spaces, including markets and social gatherings. Inspector Madiha, in charge of the Police Service Center, said a dedicated protection center has been established to address the concerns of the transgender community.

Aman jirga calls for immediate ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Policemen martyred as twin attacks rock Quetta

Two police personnel were martyred when unidentified accused opened fire on an Eagle Squad team on the Eastern Bypass. Initial findings from the bomb disposal unit indicate that the explosion was a deliberate act of sabotage, with explosives planted beneath the pipeline. The incident has disrupted gas supply across Quetta and several areas of upper Balochistan, including Airport Road, Nawan Killi, Jinnah Town, Hazarganji, Kuchlak, Pishin, Ziarat and surrounding localities. Residents are facing serious difficulties, particularly in the cold weather, as routine activities such as cooking and heating have been affected. SSGC officials stated that repair work will begin once security clearance is granted, adding that the restoration of the damaged section may take between 12 to 24 hours. Rural water, sanitation projects to be expanded

Work is underway on modern clean drinking water supply and sanitation projects in 2,000 villages across Punjab through collaboration between the Punjab government and the World Bank. Under the Chief Minister's "Model Village Programme," the provision of urban-style basic facilities in more than 450 villages is also progressing rapidly. According to officias, projects for drinking water, sanitation and model villages in rural areas have been launched under the Punjab Rural Municipal Services Company (PRMSC). PRMSC Chief Executive Officer Khurram Pervez during a visit to Tehsil Kallar Kahar, reviewed ongoing development activities and stressed improving overall project performance while assessing work quality. During the visit, the CEO, along with the field team, inspected various villages including Khai, Wasnal and Sirkalan. A detailed review was conducted of construction pace and quality, functionality of water supply systems, drainage arrangements and recovery of dues. He directed the staff to ensure all work is completed on time and according to prescribed standards to provide the best facilities to the public. The CEO said that under the special attention of the Punjab government and the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, historic steps are being taken for the welfare of rural populations. 'New wheat procurement policy to safeguard farmers'

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the Sindh government's new wheat procurement policy has been formulated in line with its broader governance vision. The primary objective of this policy is to safeguard the interests of farmers. He said the decision to procure one million tons of wheat has been taken to ensure food security and to keep flour prices under control. According to the minister, wheat procurement will begin on April 1 at 109 centres across the province, with the support price set at Rs3,500 per maund. Sharjeel added that, for the first time, wheat would be purchased exclusively from registered Hari Card holders to eliminate the role of middlemen. This initiative is expected to directly benefit genuine farmers, with approximately 330,000 growers taking benefit of the scheme. He further stated, this year the government will not provide gunny bags (bardana). Instead, farmers will bring their own bags and will be paid Rs60 per bag directly into their bank accounts through designated bank. He cautioned against the widespread consumption of substances such as gutka and paan, which promote bacterial growth and significantly increase health risks. “You cannot expect a healthy body while neglecting oral hygiene,” he added. The experts further stated that oral health also plays a vital role in digestion and mental well-being. Proper chewing aids digestion, while a healthy smile contributes to confidence and self-esteem. They added that dentists are often able to detect early signs of systemic diseases through oral symptoms, making regular checkups essential. Dr Sakrani pointed out that most people visit dentists only when they experience pain, whereas preventive care is key. “Dental visits should be routine, ideally every six to 12 months, much like servicing a car,” he said, stressing that early detection can prevent complications such as root canals or tooth extractions. PTI walks tightrope as it prepares for fresh street push

With the political horizon darkening, the PTI appears to be searching for an off-ramp to buy itself some breathing space, with some in the party claiming that their overtures are currently limited to taking careful calibrated position on security issues – an attempt to send subtle signals in the hope that the establishment picks up on these cues and meets it halfway. The party's central information secretary, however, has categorically rejected any such reading. At the same time, PTI seems to be hedging its bets. The party is expected to roll out another street movement - earlier announced by K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi - and has summoned its parliamentarians to Peshawar, where the contours of the campaign are likely to be drawn. However, the announcement has stirred unease within the ranks, as many see it as treading a well-worn path, as similar exercises over the past three years have yielded little more than sound and fury. Afridi, along with PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Asad Qaiser, is expected to lead the deliberations. Party Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram said he was not privy to the plan finalised by the K-P CM and his team. Speaking about the party's posturing on foreign policy issues, he said that party decisions are taken in the best interest of the country. This thought did not even cross our minds when these policy decisions were being finalised. He said that the party would continue its democratic struggle within the ambit provided to it by Imran Khan. He added that Imran Khan himself had on several occasions made it clear that they were not against state interests in any way and that the party fully owned state institutions. However, he stressed that this should not be conflated with the party's recently adopted policy. However, a leader from Punjab, speaking to The Express Tribune on condition of anonymity, said that in K-P the party had differences with the establishment over dealings with Afghanistan, but once the government took a definitive position, it openly backed the state's actions. Additionally, he said, the party also welcomed the government's mediation efforts between Iran and the US. According to him, this was PTI's way of signalling to the establishment that it was time to end any misgivings. He further conceded that Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Aain-e-Pakistan had not given PTI any breakthrough on any front whatsoever. He said that the existing party leadership, titular in every sense of the word, had very limited authority in taking key policy decisions, and therefore, nothing significant was expected from them either. He added that PTI's only available bargaining chip was its ability to restore the establishment's tainted credibility among the masses. Another leader from the central leadership conceded that there were growing concerns about the party's political future in the next elections. He said that even if the establishment were to accord PTI an open field today, it would still take the party twelve to eighteen months to resolve its multi-layered legal battles, meaning that the window for a comeback in the next elections was rapidly closing. He added that, in his understanding, PTI could not even approach the establishment given the ever-growing gulf between them. Pakistan set to begin Hajj flight operation from April 18

Kasim urges UNHRC intervention to end Imran's persecution, detention immediately

Kasim Khan, son of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Wednesday, urging the body to intervene and press the government of Pakistan for the immediate release of his father. “We ask this council and the OHCHR to urge Pakistan to end this persecution immediately. They must comply with the UN Working Group's opinion, and they must release my father,” Kasim said during the UNHRC’s 61st session. From the limited contact we had, I know my father is suffering,” he stated. He stressed that his father’s case was not isolated, but rather part of a much broader pattern of oppression in Pakistan since 2022. He also labelled the 2024 elections as "rigged," claiming they were designed to prevent his father's political project from taking over. Referring to Pakistan's commitment under the GSP-plus framework to uphold international human rights conventions, Kasim pointed out several violations, including the arbitrary detention of his father, his solitary confinement, the denial of medical care, the blocking of family visits, and the trial of civilians in military courts. We cannot stand by as his health deteriorates and he is kept away from us. That is the very least we can do for him,” he added. The PTI founder was brought out of the compound to a special room for the call and, after the conversation, was taken back to the compound. Last week, Jemima Goldsmith, the ex-wife of Imran, made a direct appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to allow their sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, to visit their father in prison. In response, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that the sons of Imran do not require visas to visit Pakistan to meet their father, upon which Jemima replied that the government was refusing visas for their sons, in an attempt to deprive them of British protection in the case of a possible arrest upon arrival in Pakistan.

E-bike sales surge amid rising fuel prices

Following the continued rise in petroleum prices, the sale and demand for electric and battery-powered motorcycles have increased significantly in the open market. The trend of using electric scooters is particularly growing among female students, working women and other female commuters. In Pakistan, the prices of electric bikes (e-bikes) vary depending on the brand, battery capacity and features. They are generally available from around Rs170,000 to over Rs600,000. Popular brands include Jolta, Pakzon, United and Vlektra. These bikes help reduce fuel consumption and have lower maintenance costs as they do not require petrol or engine oil. Each model offers a different range. A fully charged electric scooter can travel up to around 100 kilometres, while a single battery typically provides a range of around 80 kilometres. Another advantage is that these vehicles operate almost silently. Dealers say electric scooters are being offered with full warranty and can be purchased on instalments with an advance payment of Rs10,000 to Rs15,000. Monthly instalments usually range between Rs5,000 and Rs10,000, depending on the initial payment, while most dealers offer repayment plans for up to one year. Users say e-bikes significantly reduce fuel expenses. Haris Ali, an electric bike user, said dealers claim that one battery can run 80 to 100 kilometres, while a full electric charge can exceed 100 kilometres, but in reality the effective range is closer to 50 kilometres before the bike begins to lose power. Eid brings hope for broken households

On the second day of Eidul Fitr, Sunday, special meetings were arranged between divorced parents and their estranged children at the Judicial Complex Facilitation Centre, with the permission of the Senior Civil Judge Rawalpindi. A total of 134 divorced couples attended the sessions to meet their children. Extended family members — including grandparents and close relatives — were also present on the occasion. The children, dressed in festive attire, arrived eagerly to reunite with their separated parents. The atmosphere was deeply emotional, with many poignant scenes witnessed throughout the day. Mothers embraced their children with overwhelming affection, while some were seen kissing them repeatedly and feeding them with their own hands. The children received generous Eidi in the form of cash, clothes, shoes, and gifts, as well as refreshments such as pizza, juice, cake and ice cream. Moments of joy were evident, as families captured selfies together during the reunions. According to arrangements made under the judge's directives, the meetings commenced at 10am and continued until 3pm. Despite the public holiday, the facilitation centre was specially opened to accommodate the gatherings. Strict security measures were in place, with a significant police presence deployed to ensure order. Several children, including Kashif, Naina and Ferguson, expressed their happiness, saying they were delighted to meet their parents and relatives and to receive gifts on Eid. Officials also noted a concerning trend, observing that in recent years, marriages originating from social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook have coincided with a significant rise in divorce rates. Families flock to cemeteries Early on Eid day, families visited graveyards across the city to offer prayers and floral tributes to their departed loved ones. People placed flowers, chadars, and incense on graves while reciting the Holy Quran, often with tears in their eyes. This continued from morning till evening across 55 graveyards in the city. Following Fajr prayers, families arrived in large numbers, causing severe traffic congestion on roads, streets, and pathways leading to cemeteries. Vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws crowded the routes, bringing traffic to a standstill. Meanwhile, prices of flowers and chadars witnessed a sharp increase. Mixed flowers were sold at Rs500 per kg, while fresh flowers reached Rs600 per kg. Dry flower sheets ranged between Rs700 and Rs1,500, while fresh floral chadars were sold between Rs1,000 and Rs2,000. Hundreds of stalls selling flowers, incense, and chadars were set up outside graveyards and will remain operational throughout the three days of Eid.

FIA seizes Rs2.89b in foreign currency in Karachi hawala crackdown

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday seized foreign currency worth approximately Rs2.89billion during an operation against illegal hawala and hundi networks in the city, officials said. The raid comes as part of a nationwide crackdown against money laundering and hawala/hundi networks operating across the country, announced on Tuesday, approved, with authorities reiterating that the “business of hawala/hundi would not be tolerated under any circumstances”. The meeting also approved the formation of a joint working group comprising the State Bank of Pakistan and the Federal Investigation Agency. The group will regularly review progress on matters related to curbing illegal financial flows. According to an FIA spokesperson, the Commercial Banking Circle in Karachi carried out the operation as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal foreign exchange and informal money transfer systems. The raid was conducted on the directives of the Director Karachi Zone and under the supervision of a deputy director. Preliminary examination of the device revealed evidence related to the buying and selling of foreign currency as well as hawala and hundi activities. The suspect, along with the recovered currency and evidence, has been shifted to the FIA Commercial Banking Circle in Karachi. Further investigation into the case is underway.

Participants in an International Women’s Day march in Pakistan’s capital say they were detained and mistreated by police, as rights groups warn of a widening crackdown on dissent. Mavra Bari, a 36-year-old sociologist, said she had planned to join celebrations in Islamabad on March 8 but instead spent about 12 hours in detention. “What was meant to be a celebration turned into a horrible experience,” she said, describing a cramped holding area with poor sanitation and dozens of detainees, including women, men and children. “We were beaten.” More than 30 people were held, according to accounts from those present. An AFP journalist saw detainees upon release, some appearing shaken and showing visible bruises and swelling. Prime Minister's Adviser on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Saturday said that Pakistan was committed to its agreements with Saudi Arabia and was making efforts to reduce regional tensions by promoting rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after US and Israeli air strikes last month assassinated Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials, triggering a wave of retaliation from Tehran and widening the conflict across the region. In response to the strikes, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on US military bases in several Gulf countries, significantly expanding the scope of the confrontation. Gulf Arab states have faced more than 2,000 missile and drone attacks since ​the outbreak of the war on February 28, with targets including US diplomatic missions and military bases but also critical Gulf oil infrastructure, ports, airports, hotels ​and residential and office buildings. While Saudi Arabia has publicly maintained that it is working with Gulf countries to prevent a military confrontation in the region and has stated it would not participate in any potential war, frustration is growing. On Thursday, the Saudi foreign minister said the kingdom reserved the right to act militarily against Iran and any trust with Tehran has been shattered after Riyadh was targeted by Iranian ballistic missiles. Iran accused Israel of striking its facilities in the huge South Pars gas field on Wednesday in a major escalation in the US-Israeli war that sent oil prices shooting higher, and retaliated by vowing attacks on oil and gas targets throughout the Gulf, firing missiles at Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In the harshest comments to come out of the Gulf kingdom in nearly three weeks of war, Farhan accused Iran of premeditated hostile actions against its neighbours, both directly and via an array of regional proxies, which he urged Tehran to rein in. Amid the rising tensions, Pakistan has reiterated its strong strategic commitment to Saudi Arabia while urging restraint to avoid a broader regional conflict.  Talking to the media after offering Eidul Fitr prayers at his public secretariat today, Sanaullah said Pakistan had strongly condemned the aggression against Iran as well as the attack on its former supreme leader, reiterating full solidarity with the Islamic world. He said that Pakistan not only stood by Iran but also condemned any aggression against other Muslim countries and reaffirmed its commitment to support them. Sanaullah said that Pakistan today enjoyed the confidence of Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. "Pakistan has emerged as a symbol of peace and unity in the Muslim ummah," he said and termed its role vital for maintaining peace and stability in the region. However, he said national unity and political stability were imperative to effectively deal with the prevailing internal and external challenges of the country. Sanaullah said Pakistan was currently confronting multiple challenges on different fronts but was successfully addressing them under the prime minister's leadership, which had further strengthened its position at the international level. Afghan tensions Referring to Afghanistan, he said that Pakistan’s stance was very clear as it neither wanted to impose war on Afghanistan nor had any intention of occupying its territory. “Pakistan only desired that Afghan soil should not be used against any country, particularly against Pakistan, which is in line with international law,” he said and added that tensions between the two countries could end immediately if Afghanistan provided such assurances. He also reiterated Pakistan’s respect for the Doha Agreement and adherence to international laws. He said that Operation Ghazab Lil Haq was being carried out purely on intelligence-based information targeting terrorist hideouts. "The security forces have effectively dismantled several sanctuaries used for training terrorists," Sanaullah added. However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided not to increase the prices of petroleum products last week, honouring his promise to the public despite a further rise in international oil prices. The Committee to Monitor Petrol Prices was informed on Monday that the country had adequate fuel availability for March and coverage was available until mid-April based on current cargo planning and supply arrangements, with efforts underway to extend it further towards the end of next month. The committee members undertook a comprehensive review of petroleum product stock positions across the country and were briefed in detail on the current national inventory of crude oil and refined petroleum products, ongoing import arrangements and supply chain logistics. Earlier, Petroleum Secretary Hamed Yaqoob Sheikh said the country currently had diesel reserves sufficient for 21 days and petrol stocks for 27 days. The petroleum secretary briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum over the country’s fuel reserves and the impact of rising tensions in the Middle East on global energy supplies. Sheikh said the country also had liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) reserves for nine days and JP-1 aviation fuel stocks for 14 days. The petroleum secretary said that around 70% of Pakistan’s petroleum supplies came from the Middle East and the ongoing regional tensions had disrupted shipments, with vessel movement currently affected.

FO denounces Israeli envoy to India's 'baseless' comments on Pakistan's nuclear weapons

Pakistan on Thursday rejected comments made by the Israeli ambassador to India circulating on social media about Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, terming them a “baseless characterisation”. An interview clip of Israel’s Ambassador to India Reuven Azar with Indian news anchor Arnab Goswami has recently been doing the rounds on social media, in which he questioned the former about the Pak-Saudi mutual defence pact in the scenario of the US-Israeli war against Iran. In response, the Israeli envoy said: “I haven’t seen right now … the Pakistani army coming to the defence of Saudi Arabia against Iran.” He added that Pakistan has maintained relations with countries in the Arab world in the past, “including with our enemies". "This is something that we have been contemplating for a long period of time," he said. The Israeli ambassador also stated, “There is one rogue state that already has nuclear weapons. You don’t want to have a second one, it's very clear,” without clarifying which country he was referring to. In a statement issued today regarding what it said was a "video clip circulating on social media of the Israeli ambassador to India", the Foreign Office said: “We firmly reject this baseless characterisation. Freedom of movement not absolute: LHC

The Lahore High Court (LHC), setting aside its earlier order allowing former federal minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed to travel abroad for Umrah, ruled that the freedom of movement enshrined in Article 15 of the Constitution is not absolute. "Although the Constitution guarantees freedom of movement as a fundamental right, the same is not absolute in nature. The framers of the Constitution have expressly qualified this right by making it 'subject to reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the public interest.' "The constitutional scheme, therefore, recognizes that the right of an individual to move freely must sometimes yield to the larger interest of society, the administration of justice, and the enforcement of law," said a 23-page judgment authored by LHC's Justice Jawad Hassan. An LHC division bench, led by Justice Hassan, heard the federal government's intra-court appeal against a single bench order whereby Sheikh Rashid had been allowed to travel abroad for Umrah. The order held that the authority to regulate the passport of an accused under Section 28-A of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, including permission to travel abroad, lies exclusively with the anti-terrorism court (ATC) seized of the matter. The court observed that the single bench order was passed primarily based on a concession made by a law officer, which was beyond his lawful mandate and contrary to the statutory framework. It held that no estoppel can arise from such a concession, as a statement made without authority cannot override a subsisting judicial command. "Thus, we are inclined to allow this appeal and set aside the impugned order, with the observation that the application of the respondent, filed during the pendency of this appeal before the ATC, which was disposed of without being decided on merits on account of the pendency of this appeal, shall be deemed to be pending before the ATC. "[The appeal] shall be decided on its own merits after hearing both parties, in accordance with law, without being influenced by any observation made herein," the judgment stated. The court noted that in matters relating to criminal proceedings and the administration of justice, restrictions on the movement of an accused person are not uncommon. "Where a person faces trial before a competent court, certain conditions may be imposed to ensure their availability during proceedings and to prevent the possibility of abscondence. "Such restrictions are designed to maintain the efficacy of the criminal justice system and cannot be termed arbitrary merely because they limit the accused's personal liberty to some extent." The court held that the restriction in Sheikh Rashid's case was not an arbitrary administrative measure but was intrinsically connected with ongoing judicial proceedings before the ATC. The judgment emphasized that Article 15 of the Constitution does not confer an unfettered right to travel abroad when a person is facing trial under the Act. Section 28-A of the Anti-Terrorism Act, a lawful statutory provision enacted in the public interest, operates as a reasonable restriction on the exercise of the right guaranteed under Article 15 of the Constitution. "Accordingly, both provisions must be read together and harmoniously construed to maintain a balance between individual liberty and the effective administration of justice." The court reiterated that Article 15 does not confer an absolute right of movement, as it is expressly subject to reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the public interest. Consequently, where such restrictions emanate from lawful authority and are aimed at ensuring the proper administration of justice, they cannot be said to violate Article 15. The judgment explained that when Article 15 is read in isolation, it may appear to grant an unrestricted right of movement. However, when the qualifying phrase - "subject to reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the public interest" - is considered, it becomes evident that Section 28-A of the Anti-Terrorism Act falls squarely within permissible constitutional limitations. "Consequently, Article 15 of the Constitution and Section 28-A of the Act must be read together and harmoniously interpreted. The doctrine of harmonious construction requires that where a constitutional provision and a statutory enactment operate within the same field, the court should interpret them in a manner that gives effect to both rather than rendering either redundant." The court observed that Article 15 lays down the general constitutional principle of freedom of movement, whereas Section 28-A provides a specific statutory framework regulating the movement of persons accused of serious offences. "The latter, therefore, operates as a lawful and reasonable restriction within the meaning of Article 15 of the Constitution. It is also significant that the restriction contemplated under Section 28-A is neither arbitrary nor absolute, as it vests discretion in the court to determine the duration of passport impounding and to consider requests for travel abroad in appropriate circumstances. "Thus, the restriction is regulatory in nature and subject to judicial oversight." The court also noted that Sheikh Rashid had moved a fresh application before the ATC during the appeal's pendency, which was dismissed because the intra-court appeal was pending before the high court. "The respondent was further cautioned to remain careful in future about concealing the present proceedings. Such conduct is significant, as it indicates that he was fully aware of the proper forum for seeking such relief and of the pendency of the present appeal before this court. By approaching the ATC while the matter was sub judice, the respondent appears to have attempted to circumvent the appellate proceedings." The judgment also criticized the role of the law officer, observing that the respondent had bypassed the statutory mechanism and obtained relief through a constitutional petition that was allowed primarily based on a statement made by the Additional Attorney General without proper examination of the statutory framework. "Such conduct undermines the duty of a law officer, whose primary obligation is to assist the court with candour, honesty, and complete disclosure of facts, irrespective of the party being represented," the court observed. The court concluded that the respondent ought to have first availed the remedy available before the ATC instead of invoking the constitutional jurisdiction of the high court in the manner he did.

Pakistan Day parade called off amid austerity measures

The federal government has called off the Pakistan Day parade scheduled for March 23 due to the ongoing oil crisis and the austerity measures announced following the Middle East tensions, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said on Tuesday. "In light of the ongoing Gulf oil crisis and the austerity measures announced by the government, it has been decided that the Pakistan Day parade scheduled for March 23 and all associated ceremonies will not be held," the PMO's statement read. The decision was taken in the wake of the recent crisis triggered by disruptions in oil supply following the US-Israel-Iran war, resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, to cope with the situation, the prime minister announced a four-day work week and a work-from-home policy as part of wide-ranging austerity measures. The PMO statement added that the day will instead be observed with dignity and respect through simple flag-hoisting ceremonies. The step is aimed at ensuring that the nation's commitment to the ideals of Pakistan Day, its resilience and unwavering resolve are upheld, while maintaining the broader policy of austerity. "All ministries, divisions and departments are directed to observe the occasion with simplicity and dignity, so that despite limited ceremonies, the importance of the day and its true message remain preserved," it added. Pakistan Day, observed annually on March 23, commemorates the adoption of the Lahore Resolution in 1940 and is traditionally marked by a large military parade in Islamabad attended by the country's political and military leadership.

First Pakistani vessel carrying oil shipment arrives via Strait of Hormuz

The first Pakistani vessel to transit through the Strait of Hormuz following its closure has entered the Arabian Sea via the Gulf of Oman and reached Pakistan’s maritime zone, carrying a consignment of 80 million litres of crude oil. The oil tanker, MT Karachi, crossed the strategically sensitive route after Iran had shut it in the wake of attacks by the United States and Israel. It is the first Pakistani ship to successfully pass through the strait under the prevailing circumstances and enter the country’s territorial waters. The vessel is scheduled to berth at Karachi port on Wednesday. Officials said MT Karachi was granted special permission by Iranian authorities to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, utilising Iranian territorial waters during its passage. The Pakistan Navy provided maritime security to the vessel throughout its journey, ensuring safe navigation through the sensitive corridor. The tanker departed from Das Island port in the United Arab Emirates on February 28. According to international media reports, payment for the crude oil carried by MT Karachi was made in Chinese currency.

FBR challengesPHC tobacco firms'de-sealing order

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has approached the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) challenging the Peshawar High Court (PHC) order directing the de-sealing of three tobacco companies. The FBR, through its counsel Hafiz Ahsaan Ahmad Khokhar, has filed a petition before the FCC against the PHC's December 18, 2025 judgment, which directed the revenue authority to de-seal three tobacco companies in the province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). Challenging the PHC judgment, the FBR contends that the high court exceeded the limits of its constitutional jurisdiction by entertaining the writ petitions despite the existence of adequate and efficacious alternate statutory remedies provided under Sections 33, 34 and 35 of the Federal Excise Act, 2005, which establish a complete statutory hierarchy for adjudication, appeal, and revision. According to the department, the judgment contradicts the well-settled doctrine of exhaustion of remedies, consistently affirmed by the Supreme Court (including in 2022 SCMR 92), which holds that constitutional jurisdiction cannot ordinarily be invoked to circumvent remedies provided under a special fiscal statute. The petition further submits that the high court interfered at a premature stage of the proceedings, even though only a show-cause notice had been issued and the adjudication process under Section 33 of the Federal Excise Act had not yet culminated in a final determination of liability. The department argues that issuing a show-cause notice merely initiates adjudicatory proceedings and does not constitute a final adverse order amenable to challenge under Article 199 of the Constitution. The FBR has also challenged the high court's interpretation of the statutory expression "reason to believe" contained in Rule 28A(6) of the Federal Excise Rules.
